2 Sarniia Hockey Associiatiion (SHA) Sarnia Hockey Association (SHA) is volunteer driven organization that is the major governing body for minor hockey in Sarnia. SHA receives functional guidance from the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario of which it is one of 20 association members. The Alliance in turn is a member of Ontario Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada. The business of governing minor hockey in Sarnia is conducted by an executive committee. The committee meets on the first Tuesday and third Wednesday of every month (Clearwater Arena, lower hall, 7 pm). Any interested parties may attend meetings to observe the proceedings. Items for discussion from the floor must be brought to the attention of the chair person at least 72 hours prior to a meeting. A listing of our executive members, their contact information, and executive meeting dates can be accessed from the SHA website. 8 Compettiittiive Hockey Programs The competitive hockey programs offered by Sarnia Hockey Association afford players the opportunity to play hockey at a level of competition that suits their capabilities and desire but also challenges them to further develop their skills. Competitive hockey is offered at two levels, Representative A/AA and Minor Development (MD). Both divisions have major and minor teams. Competitive teams are sponsored by Sarnia s OHL team, Sarnia Sting. Representative A/AA Teams SHA A/AA teams participate in the Alliance Seeded League and play against other Alliance association member teams. Teams are seeded based on performance into AA (Constellation) and A (Bristol) divisions at the halfway point in the season. From then on, teams play only other teams in their divisions in their drive to winning the divisions championship! Note: Minor Midget teams are not seeded for the 2010 / 2011 season. MD Teams Minor Development hockey is offered by SHA as another option for players that want to play competitive hockey. MD teams participate in the Alliance MD West League which includes Oakridge, North London, South South East, Stratford, West London and Woodstock teams in most divisions. As SHA MD teams play their regular season and playoffs games against the other MD West League teams, the rivalries build! Top teams in each division make their way to the MD championship tournament. Competitive teams: Consist of 15 skaters and 2 goalies Wear black helmets, pants and gloves Jersey and socks are supplied, jerseys are returned to SHA at end of season Expect to participate in games during March Break Memory Mate, consisting of team and individual picture, is provided at no additional cost. Extra pictures etc. may be ordered through the photographer at the player/parent s cost 2010 / 2011 Season Representative A/AA and MD Team Divisions and Player Birth Year Representative A/AA MD Player Birth Year No Team Minor Novice 2003 No Team Major Novice Tier I & II 2002, Minor Atom Minor Atom 2001 Major Atom Major Atom 2000 Minor Peewee Minor Peewee 1999 Major Peewee Major Peewee 1998 Minor Bantam Minor Bantam 1997 Major Bantam Major Bantam 1996 Minor Midget Minor Midget 1995 Major Midget Major Midget 1994, 1993 Tryouts SHA players wanting to play competitive hockey must tryout. Tryouts are scheduled to start late August for the 2010/2011 season. The arena, dates, and times are posted on our website and in the local newspaper several weeks before. Tryouts consist of several on-ice sessions for each division. Skaters are called on to skate, and perform in drills and scrimmages. Tryouts give coaches and their tryout helpers an opportunity to evaluate prospective players on basic hockey skills (skating, passing, shooting, stick handling, etc.), conditioning, work ethic, attitude, and how well they function as part of a team. Players wanting to tryout must be registered with SHA and have paid the $40 tryout fee (paid at registration). Players must participate in the first Representative A/AA team tryout session at their age appropriate level.

9 Players continue trying out with the A/AA team unless released by the coach. If released, players attend tryouts for their age appropriate MD team. Players move to HL if released by the MD coach. Starting with the 2011 / 2012 season, players requesting a release from any competitive team move directly to HL. Players are entitled t0 1 tryout skate at the A/AA level and a total of 3 skates before being released to house league. As tryouts progress, names of players eligible to attend the next tryout with a team are posted on team web pages on our website. Team rosters are also posted on team web pages at the end of the tryout process. Novice division tryouts present a special case. All novice age players (minor and major) may tryout for the Novice Tier I MD team. If released from this team, major novice players may tryout for the Novice Tier II team or move to HL. Minor novice players may tryout for the Minor Novice MD team or move to HL. 10 Competitive Team Affiliation SHA competitive team and house league players may be affiliated with teams other than their own (A/AA and MD teams) during the hockey season. The benefits of team affiliation are twofold: 1. Competitive teams are able to call on affiliated players as replacements for sick, injured or suspended players to maintain their line up. 2. The affiliation provides the opportunity to develop the affiliated player by exposure to a higher calibre of hockey during practice and games with the affiliating team. However, there are a number of rules associated with the affiliation process. The following information is intended to ensure the rules surrounding the affiliation of players are clear to all. 11 No player may be used as an affiliated player (AP) without the consent of his or her Alliance Hockey approved team Teams may affiliate up to 19 players from either house league or one competitive team level below 12. For example: 1. Minor Bantam A/AA team may affiliate from Major Peewee A/AA or Minor Bantam MD or Minor Bantam HL 2. Minor Bantam MD may affiliate from Major Peewee MD or Minor Bantam HL 3. Minor Bantam A/AA may affiliate with Major or Minor Bantam AAA Affiliated players (AP) are marked as AP on game sheets An AP roster must be submitted to the SHA Director of Representative Teams for approval prior to an AP player skating with a team in practice and/or games AP players may only be affiliated with one team and appear only on that team s AP roster as of January 10 AP rosters must be filed and approved by January 10 HL players may affiliate with a competitive team no more than 5 times annually. Additional affiliations are at the discretion of the Director of Representative A/AA Teams and/or Director of Representative MD teams. Competitive team players may participate as AP in an unlimited number of games before January 10 Major team players may participate as AP in no more than 5 games after January 10 (tournament and exhibition games do not count towards the 5 game maximum) Minor team players may participate as AP in an unlimited number of games after January 10 Competitive Team Parent s and Player s and Responsibilities For competitive team parent s and player s responsibilities, refer to Policies, Procedures and Regulations of Sarnia Hockey Association, section This document is posted on our website. Faiir Pllay Codes for Pllayers,, Parents,, Spectators,, Coaches,, Offiiciialls and League Organiizers All hockey participants whether they are players, parents, spectators, coaches, officials, or league officials are expected to comply with the Fair Play Codes set out by the Alliance. Fair Play Code for Players I will play hockey because I want to, not just because others or coaches want me to. I will play by the rules of hockey, and in the spirit of the game. I will control my temper - fighting and "mouthing off" can spoil the activity for everybody. I will respect my opponents. I will do my best to be a true team player. I will remember that winning isn't everything - that having fun, improving skills, making friends and doing my best are also important. I will acknowledge all good plays/performances - those of my team and of my opponents. I will remember that coaches and officials are there to help me. I will accept their decisions and show them respect. Fair Play Code for Parents I will not force my child to participate in hockey. I will remember that my child plays hockey for his or her enjoyment, not for mine. I will encourage my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence. I will teach my child that doing one's best is as important as winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game. I will make my child feel like a winner every time by offering praise for competing fairly and trying hard. I will never ridicule or yell at my child for making a mistake or losing a game. I will remember that children learn best by example. I will applaud good plays/performances by both my child's team and their opponents. I will never question the officials' judgment or honesty in public. I will support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from children's hockey games. 13 The Fair Play Code for Players, Parents, Spectators, Coaches, Officials, and League Organizers can be found on the Alliance website at and in the Alliance Hockey Handbook

12 Fair Play Code for Parents I will respect and show appreciation for the volunteer Coaches and administrators who give their time to coach and provide hockey for my child. Fair Play Code for Spectators I will remember that participants play hockey for their enjoyment. They are not playing to entertain me. I will not have unrealistic expectations. I will remember that players are not professionals and cannot be judged by professional standards. I will respect the officials' decisions and I will encourage participants to do the same. I will never ridicule a player for making a mistake during a game. I will give positive comments that motivate and encourage continued effort. I will condemn the use of violence in any form and will express my disapproval in an appropriate manner to coaches and league officials. I will show respect for my team's opponents, because without them there would be no game. I will not use bad language, nor will I harass players, coaches, officials or other spectators. Fair Play Code for Coaches I will be reasonable when scheduling games and practices, remembering that players have other interests and obligations. I will teach my players to play fairly and to respect the rules, officials and opponents. I will ensure that all players get equal instruction, support and playing time. I will not ridicule or yell at my players for making mistakes or for performing poorly. I will remember that players play to have fun and must be encouraged to have confidence in themselves. I will make sure that equipment and facilities are safe and match the players' ages and abilities. I will remember that participants need a coach they can respect. I will be generous with praise and set a good example. I will obtain proper training and continue to upgrade my coaching skills. I will work in cooperation with officials for the benefit of the game. Fair Play Code for Officials I will make sure that every player has a reasonable opportunity to perform to the best of his or her ability, within the limits of the rules. I will avoid or put an end to any situation that threatens the safety of the players. I will maintain a healthy atmosphere and environment for competition. I will not permit the intimidation of any player either by word or by action. I will not tolerate unacceptable conduct toward myself, other officials, players or spectators. I will be consistent and objective in calling all infractions, regardless of my personal feelings toward a team or individual player. I will handle all conflicts firmly but with dignity. I accept my role as a teacher and role model for fair play, especially with young participants. I will be open to discussion and contact with the players before and after the game. I will remain open to constructive criticism and show respect and consideration for different points of view. I will obtain proper training and continue to upgrade my officiating skills. I will work in cooperation with coaches for the benefit of the game.

13 Fair Play Code for League Organizers I will do my best to see that all players are given the same chance to participate, regardless of gender, ability, ethnic background or race. I will absolutely discourage any sport program from becoming primarily an entertainment for the spectator. I will make sure that all equipment and facilities are safe and match the athletes' ages and abilities. I will make sure that the age and maturing level of the participants are considered in program development, rule enforcement and scheduling. I will remember that play is done for its own sake and make sure that winning is kept in proper perspective. I will distribute the fair play codes to spectators, coaches, athletes, officials, parents and media. I will make sure that coaches and officials are capable of promoting fair play as well as the development of good technical skills and I will encourage them to become certified. A Message to Parents (from Hockey Canada) 1 44 The game of hockey is for kids. Kids play the game because they love it and because it is fun. As parents we must all realize that, for kids, positive participation is always more important than excellence. The personal and social development that comes from being part of a team is one of the most enriching experiences offered by the game. We must continue to live the values of fun and fair play, respect, integrity and teamwork with a balanced perspective of expectations and definition of success. We must celebrate our good experiences with this great game. Our volunteers, our coaches, our referees, our parents and our children are all critical partners in ensuring the game sustains these high values. No one, however, is more critical than our parents. We must particularly assist our parents in setting reasonable expectations while understanding the game, its process and its administration. Being a hockey parent is no easy task. Hockey parents are often called upon to wear many different volunteer hats, some of which result in conflicting roles. A hockey parent may be a coach, evaluator, director or a referee any of whom is required to make decisions in everyone s best interest while still being a mom or dad wanting what s best for his or her own child. Parents wrestle with reconciling their roles and controlling their passion as fans while being faced with the constant challenge of doing the right thing. Hockey Canada is committed to helping those parents meet these challenges to ensure they continue to enjoy the game and have as much fun as their kids. Remember, it s about fairness and respect! It s about play! It s all about family! It s about us all having fun and being kids! What else could really be more important? 14 A Message to Parents, Hockey Canada website
