6 Member Spotlight Nancy Hunsicker Sidesaddle on SL Salute+++/ Legion of Supreme Merit champion I was born a horse crazy little girl in Los Angeles. After vacationing for years at the Alisal, my family moved to Santa Ynez Valley in the late 1970 s when I was midway through High School, where I graduated from Santa Ynez Union High School before going on to Santa Barbara City College & USCB. Since I grew up reading and re-reading the entire Black Stallion series along with King of the Wind, my initial horse fascination was with Arabians. Over the years I successfully bred and showed Arabs in nearly every division and discipline you can imagine Halter, Hunter Pleasure, Western Pleasure, Saddle Seat, Show Hack, Side Saddle & Native Costume. My involvement with Arabians led to many fabulous show experiences in the United States & Canada National Top 10 s in Canada & Scottsdale, Top 20 s in the United States along with numerous Regional and Class titles. I also, through Arab horses and the World Arabian Horse Organization, was privileged to have open entre in the Arabian world all over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, traveled to some amazing places and met a lot of interesting people passionate about Arab horses. On the non-horse side of things I had to make a living and support my horse habit! Although more inclined toward the performing arts and theater, or broadcast journalism, I gritted my teeth, took business and economics classes and went in to the financial services field. I knew this was a choice which would allow me to stay in the Central Coast area and continue my involvement with horses. Although I started my career on the banking side, I quickly moved over to securities and was hired as a stockbroker by [what was then] Dean Witter in Over the years I became Assistant Branch Manager, then ultimately a Vice President as well as Branch Manager before transitioning my practice from Solvang down to Santa Barbara, retiring a few years ago from Morgan Stanley. Along the way, I still needed a creative outlet, and had never let go of my Yes, I really did bellydance! love of performance art plus the exotic, so I spent about 15 years dancing with our local Queen of Bellydance, Judeen Esau and her performance troupe Yeni Dunya. Incidentally, bellydance is terrific cross-training for riding and came in really handy when I was rehabbing from a hip replacement last year. Meanwhile..I started dating David, who would [several years down the road] become my husband. Being highly Western and performance horse oriented, he encouraged me to become involved with the Western Performance disciplines..which led to a certain rather infamous first trip to the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity [from Claire Hanssen; Come on up and check it out! It ll be a cheap fun weekend! ] which led to me raising my hand at the Performance Horse Sale-- and coming home with a beautiful bay Ward Ranch bred stallion, Magic Reminic. We immediately rectified the stallion part of that equation and my reined cow horse career was launched. Now I am totally in love with reined cow horses and the western disciplines. Presently, Magic Reminic has semi-retired to Team Sorting and This Catz Got Cash is my competitive bridle horse, having taken me all the way through the futurities and derbies. I ve really got the cow horse bug and am itching to get another Limited Age Event youngster! I m also excited about competing in Ranch Horse Versatility this coming year. Morroco in 1994, at a Fantasia held at Kind Hassan s stud farm outside of Rabat, with the Directors of the Royal Court Stud of Oman and the Equestrian Club of Qatar.
7 I ve been blessed with terrific mentors throughout my equestrian career. In my early years I rode with Dick Koehler, Eric Bubbell, Bob Battaglia, then later Wendy Griffith, Joanne Fox and Kelly Elm. Tommy Shelly and Mary Dosek gave me my first cow horse lessons, then after I acquired Magic Reminic I rode with Sandy Collier for several years until she retired. Now I occasionally ride with Pam Turnbull to school trail obstacles and technique, but mainly with Korie Baker & Justin Wright. I feel privileged to be surrounded by excellence every time I get on my horse up in Orcutt these days! I love the never-ending challenge of Reined Cow Horse. It is truly the most difficult, and often frustrating thing I have ever done with horses yet also the most fun and satisfying. The Cow Horse people are, hands down, the most grounded, friendly and supportive of any equestrian discipline I ve ever experienced. This Catz Got Cash, winning the reining section of our last Derby appearance. Making the Finals in ½ Arab Show Hack at US Nationals on Magniffique.

10 Trainer Tip Staying Focused While Showing By: Wyatt Fisher Double R Ranch Paso Robles, California Part of the excitement of riding a reined cow horse or a horse of any discipline is competition. However, sometimes we work so hard at home or with our trainers towards the goal of showing that when we actually get into the show pen we put a lot of unnecessary pressure onto ourselves and our horses. That can stem from just the overall excitement of showing, nerves, or maybe expectations that you may have for yourself or your horse. Whatever it is, it s important to remember why you are actually doing this. It is supposed to be FUN! When you are ready to head to a show try to stay realistic about both your horses abilities as well as your own and make sure that you have properly prepared your horse so that you are not putting them in a position to lose confidence. Whether you are a beginner on a seasoned bridle horse or an experience rider with a green three-year-old that you are just trying to get exposed, going into the arena with too high or too low of expectations of your performance can hinder future progress. When entering the arena, staying focused is key. I like to focus on one maneuver at a time. While doing the rein work, if I m running my circles I am focused on that until I am coming up to my lead change and setting that up. When I am running down for my stops I am concentrating on building speed past my markers and easing my horse into the ground. In the past I would start to think about my turn around in the middle of my run down, inevitably I would end up scotching or missing a marker. Those points can cost you a lot of money at some shows. There are lots of reasons to lose focus in the show pen, whether your run is going great or not so great but showing successfully requires that close attention to each detail of your run. If something does not go as anticipated, just finish that maneuver and move on. Keep your head up and keep moving forward focusing on your next maneuver. Sometimes this can be a little bit trickier with the cow work than the rein work as it adds a whole new sometimes unpredictable element to the equation. When the dust settles, and you are able to either watch a video of your run or reflect on it, always take something positive away from it. Do not beat yourself up if things did not go as planned, maybe your horse was having an off day or maybe you were. Even if your time in the show pen was more amazing than expected continue to stay focused, practice at home or at your trainers and keep moving forward and improving. Sometimes we feel like rock stars at home, but little parts of our performance can fall apart when we get into a show atmosphere. The best way to overcome this is practice in the show pen.
11 Shea Linane/Mr Smart Lil Star Non Pro Bridle and Youth Bridle Champion Teresa Fisher/Rocking Boon San Non Pro Junior Horse Champion Daniel Sanchez/The Stepchild Open Bridle Champion The SYVCH has always worked to promote and help our youth riders. As they grow into young adults we are equally excited to continue this tradition by supporting and including a collegiate class for the Cal Poly Mustangs Reined Cow Horse Team! It will be fun to watch this team as they work towards their goal of attending the NRCHA Collegiate Invitational Championships in Texas this February.
