JULY 2012 Volume 1, Issue 2 Board of Directors: Debbie Hotaling, President Mike Doud, Vice President Tia Harari, Secretary Janet Bache Brad Barkemeyer Corey Cushing Jason Hershberger Christina Hunter Janet Jones Jeff McDowell Dema Paul Kevin Stallings Deah Hessian- Ruple, assistant The Newsletter of the Arizona Reined Cow Horse Association SHERRI GILKERSON MEMORIAL RECIPE FOR SUCCESS Plenty of sun, plenty of horses and plenty of cattle added up to plenty of fun at the 6 th Annual Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Bridle and Hackamore Spectacular. Held at Casner Ranch in Temecula, California May 18-20, 2012, this show proved that excellent show management together with a spacious and beautiful venue, plus hard running cattle, will draw a crowd every time. The Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association and the Arizona Reined Cow Horse Association sponsored the show. It was an actionpacked weekend for everyone! The herd work for the spectacular classes and the AQHA cutting classes took place all day Friday. Two cutting pens accommodated the cutters and spectacular participants. The Open Hackamore class began in the afternoon in a new scheduling strategy designed to ensure that classes finished at a reasonable time at the end of the day. The Grand Meadows evening ring-side social gave everyone a chance to kick back and tell tall tales about their cutting pen prowess. Saturday s action began bright and early with the reined and fence work for the spectacular competitors as well as the horse show classes. There was no rest for the wicked as each class moved along. As a result of this efficiency, everyone was able to enjoy the free awards barbecue at the end of the day sponsored by the Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association. The action did not slow down on Sunday with the Big Horse Wine Country Classic horse show. This provided one last chance to run, turn, slide and dominate those cows in the cow horse pen.

Page 2 of 15 We are so pleased that this show is growing every year. It is a tribute to both the SCRCHA and the AzRCHA that this show provides a venue for the best cow horsers in the country to perform, and to do it all in honor of Sherri Gilkerson, noted AzRCHA President Debbie Hotaling. 5 Page 5 of 15 NRCHA DERBY RUNDOWN Paso Robles was the place to be June 12-17, 2012 when the NRCHA Derby took center stage. The Arizona cow horse industry was well-represented by Corey Cushing who qualified four horses for the finals of the Open Derby. Most people are pleased to make the finals with one horse, but Corey is not most people! Corey was Reserve Champion on Docs Catty Jo, owned by Suzanne Clark. He placed tenth with Four or Five Times, owned by Matthews Cutting Horses, and placed eighteenth with Tonette s Playgun owned by Eric Dunn. Corey rounded out the group with a twentieth placing on PRF Spoonful of Gold, owned by Cathy Corrigan. Shadd Parkinson continued to represent Arizona when he won the Intermediate Open Derby with TR Spooky Cat owned by Christa Hampton. Kevin Stallings placed ninth in the class with Smart Shinin Lena, owned by Linda Mars. In the Limited Open, up and comer Trapper Rodgers placed third on Boontobewild, owned by Jimmy Spriggs. Toni Heath won the Intermediate Non Pro class on Smokums Dream. Toni trains with Jim Paul Sr. during the winter months and has made Arizona her second home! Congrats to all!

Page 6 of 15 MARS PETCARE U.S. SUPPORTS ANIMAL RESCUE FROM COLORADO WILDFIRES Ever notice the abundant supply of M&M candy and dog treats at the AzRCHA events? Ever notice how the name Linda Mars pops up whenever generous sponsors are discussed? The Mars company is at it again, supporting the American Humane Association s Red Star Rescue Team and its Rescue Rig pictured below. The Rescue Rig was deployed to sites of the wildfires in Colorado for the purpose of proving first responders to assist pets in need as a result of the raging fires. The group provides emergency rescue operations, sheltering and care to animal victims of the fires. The AzRCHA is proud to have a sponsor and friend who reaches out to help those in need. Next time you pop open that bag of M & Ms or buy some Pedigree dog food, know that you are supporting a company that cares.

Page 7 of 15 CLUB 411 Show planner: Mark your calendars for the AZRCHA Arizona Breeders Reined Cow Horse Fall Futurity and Fall Classic, October 26-28, 2012 at Horseshoe Park in Queen Creek, Arizona. Be Informed: How many horses were in my class? Where did I place? What was my score? Where do I rank in the year end standings? How do I qualify for yearend awards? Check out the AZRCHA web site at in order to get up to date information about horse show results and year end point standings. The club web site also has horse show class schedules, class fees and entry forms. Be Heard: Do you have an idea that would make our shows even better? Do you want to sponsor a class? Do you want to volunteer? Do you have a gripe? Contact a member of the board via or phone-contact information is available on the web site.

Page 8 of 15 Letter from the President As we all enjoy our summer vacations from school and the routine work schedules the AZRCHA Board is working to put together the Fall Futurity and Classic Horse Show as well as plans for new classes and jackpots. If you are interested in being a sponsor please contact any board member today. The 2012 Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Show was just amazing. It was so great to see so many friends and celebrate our wonderful friend, Sherri. We had our highest entry numbers to date. As in the past we thank SCRCHA for their hard work, sponsorship of a buckle and the BBQ. Mike Doud and Craig England did a great job behind the grill. Linda, I thank you for all your help and support. Awesome job, everyone! We have so many great sponsors that make the Spectacular possible but most importantly the Hammond Family, Pedigree Pet Foods & Linda Mars, The Knight Family and Smart Boons. I can t wait for next year! We all have a right to be so proud of being a part of this show! Thank you everyone! AZRCHA is always looking for sponsors, ideas and workers to keep our club growing and our members proud. We are currently working on new changes to our web site and Facebook so check back with us. It is a labor of love to do the hard work it takes to continue to bring these shows to reality. Give back to the club and volunteer! See you all Down the Fence, Debbie Hotaling, AZRCHA President

Page 11 of 15 HUNGRY HORSEMAN CUISINE Ingredients FRESH CORN CASSEROLE 8 ears corn (still in the husk) 2 red bell peppers, diced 2 fresh jalapenos, diced 1 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 stick salted butter, cut into pieces Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Remove the corn from the husks. In a large, deep bowl, slice off the kernels of corn with a sharp knife. Turn the knife to the dull side and scrape the cob all the way down to remove all the bits of kernel and creamy milk inside. (I do this inside the bowl because it goes everywhere if you cut it on a board.) Add the red bell peppers, jalapenos, heavy cream, milk, salt to taste, a generous amount of pepper and butter and mix it well. Pour into a 9 by 13-inch baking dish. Bake until thoroughly warmed through, 30 to 45 minutes. From: The Pioneer Woman(Food Network)
