Values used for and age calculations, with measured (field) water contents shown in parentheses. Assuming K and Rb concentrations of 13 ± 1% and 400 ± 100 μg/g, respectively. Weighted mean ± standard error of the individual single-aliquot D e values for the sensitivity-corrected MET-pIRIR 250 C signal, calculated using the central age model. The number of aliquots is shown in parentheses. For the TUT samples, residual doses of Gy (obtained from bleached aliquots of each sample) have been subtracted. The minimum D e value listed for TLT-OSL6 corresponds to 90% of the saturation level (i.e., 2.3D 0 ) of the typical 250 C MET-pIRIR doseresponse curve (see text for discussion). One of the 14 measured aliquots of sample TUT-OSL9 was rejected from the data set, as the natural signal was in saturation. Total uncertainty (1σ) includes the propagated random errors and a 2% systematic error to allow for any possible bias associated with calibration of the laboratory beta source. Only a minimum age could be determined for TLT-OSL6 and the age estimates for the TUT samples could also be viewed conservatively as minimum ages (see discussion in Supplementary section 3.4). 3

Scenario B: External beta and gamma s calculated assuming that the 226 Ra and 210 Pb deficits (or excesses in the case of TUT-OSL3) occurred recently, and that the 238 U chain was in secular equilibrium for almost the entire period of sample burial. Under this assumption, the 238 U activities are used also for 226 Ra and 210 Pb, with adjustments for beta-dose attenuation and water content (20 ± 5%). Consists of the external beta and gamma s shown in this table, plus the cosmic-ray and internal beta s listed in Supplementary Table
