3 AMERICAN CATTLE SERVICES, INC State Hwy 5 Chattanooga, OK Office: (580) Ken Holloway (580) Bruce Brooks (580) acs@americancattleservices.com Dear Limousin Friends & Commercial Cattlemen: Beef industry contraction and herd reductions are far too common the past couple of years. The perfect storm of economic stress and historic drought has forced liquidations of millions of cows and reduced the supply of finished cattle to a 50 year low. Yet, the beef industry has never looked brighter. Record prices for feeder cattle, emerging markets around the world and advancing science and technology put seedstock producers willing to embrace change in a position of true opportunity unlike ever before. For 24 years, Wulf Limousin has used the word opportunity to describe their annual sale. The market has experienced many significant ups and downs throughout those 24 years, yet Wulf Limousin has always strived for and believed in opportunity. Equally as important is the opportunity for value-added market access passed on to their customers that comes as a result of years of data collection, relationship building and mutual respect earned by Wulf s from some of the world s toughest negotiators, the packer. The 2012 Opportunity Sale, while it may look like other sale offerings, simply isn t. The 337 bulls and 55 females offered represent the most proven Limousin and Lim-Flex genetics. These genetics have been proven in the pasture, in the feedyard and at the packer. In fact, the diversity of Wulf Limousin to supply cattle at every segment of the food chain, all the way to a Laura s Lean or other branded boxes, place Wulf Limousin in the rare air category for registered seedstock producers. Wulf Limousin has applied the real world education gained from the diversity of the operation to their customers. As a result, Wulf repeat customers are quick to recognize an opportunity when they see one and they keep coming back. The educational forum held the evening before the sale has become another opportunity for producers to gain more information and ask questions from opinion leaders in their respected fields. This year, What s Under the Hide will focus on meat science. In other words, the value of knowing your genetics as well as knowing how the beef industry values your genetics. Brad Brandenburg, Tyson Fresh Foods will discuss value added carcass specifications. Dr. Ryan Cox, Meat Scientist, Univ. of Minnesota will discuss meat quality. Dr. Duane Wulf, who developed the Wulf Bull Selection Index will discuss the simplicity of using the indexes to find genetics to match your end-point targets. As always, if any of us at American Cattle Services can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. Wow, was this ever true this year. Cattle have soared to all-time highs never in our lifetime have we seen these prices. Even with this higher market, we have still been able to add value to fed cattle like never before, especially when taking advantage of the programs available. According to the Meat Export Federation, 2011 was a record year for beef exports both in terms of volume and in terms of value. We are truly feeding the world with high quality American beef. The future for beef exports appears to be bright as we continue to bring value to our industry by qualifying cattle for these export markets. We want to thank all our feeder calf suppliers who have been proactive in qualifying their calves for NHTC, Natural and GAP approved. For more information on any of these programs, please give us a call. After another year of feed efficiency testing backed by closeouts on hundreds of pens of cattle going through our operations, we are certain we are on the right track with Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle. When it comes to converting feed to carcass weight, they are the elite in the industry. Be sure to come to the sale a day early and take in the seminar What s Under the Hide. It promises to be a crash course in meat science, brought to you again by a great panel of speakers. Learn more about what Tyson is looking for by hearing first hand from Brad Brandenburg. When you get your carcass data back on your calves, please call if you have questions, or if you would simply like us to walk you through it. If we can assist in helping you decide which bulls to buy based on the data, we are more than happy to help. Bull retirement is back again another win-win program. Get a premium to cash in your old bull and replace him with new and improved genetics. The Wulf crew is extremely excited this year about the Limousin and Lim-Flex offering. Quality is deep, and the bulls have been out all year running on grass and stalks. They should be hard and ready to breed cows. Feel free to stop by anytime between now and sale time to view the cattle. You are most welcome. Otherwise, we will look forward to seeing you Thursday, March 29 for the seminar and March 30 for our 24 th Annual Opportunity Sale. Safe travels and we look forward to seeing you. 5 Weigh the Wulf Advantage Energy efficiency is a hot topic for discussion in everything from cars to appliances to the architecture. With corn being our energy source for feeding cattle over $7.00 a bushel earlier this fall, profitability can be dramatically influenced by feeding efficient cattle. In the fall of 2010, 48 head of known pedigreed cattle were put on feed at the University of Minnesota feedlot in Rosemount, Minn. Thirty purebred Limousin steers were fed for 135 days alongside 18 purebred Angus steers using a Calan Gate system. Both groups were implanted with Revalor S on the first day of the test. The steers were fed a 61.5 Mcal ration consisting of dry-rolled corn, modified distillers grains, grass hay, and a liquid supplement. All the cattle shipped on July 8 to Tyson in Dakota City, Nebraska. Interestingly, both groups of steers gained 3.56 pounds per day. The Limousin steers consumed pounds of dry matter per day, which equates to a feed to gain ratio of 6.08, while the Angus steers averaged 24.2 lbs of dry matter intake per day which gives them a feed to gain ratio of This is 2.7 pounds less feed per day. With the ration cost for that time period of approximately $250 per ton, or $0.125 per pound, the Limousin steers fed for $0.34 less per head per day. Over the course of the 135 days the Limousin steers fed $45.56 per head less than their Angus contemporaries. Cost-of-gain was $0.99 per pound for the Limousin steers and $1.08 per pound for the Angus steers. While the Angus steers did not have any Selects or Standards, they also had 39% Yield Grade 4s and no 1s and 2s. The Limousin graded with more Selects, but 45% achieved Yield Grade 1s, 45% Yield Grade 2s and 10% Yield Grade 3s. The Angus steers had heavier live weights, with a 1,439 pound average compared with a 1,394 pound average live weight for Limousin. Docility! STILL #1 at Wulf Limousin Raising registered Limousin cattle for 40 years, we have become real students of not only Limousin but the seedstock business. Tracking bloodlines, measuring traits and recording data has been the norm. What we do with that data through planned matings, sire and replacement female selection and marketing is what makes the difference. While watching many different fads and trends come and go in the past 40 years, several things have remained constant. At the top of Wulf Limousin s list has been and always will be Docility. People up and down the beef production chain do not want to deal with nervous cattle. Not only are they harder to manage, but production is also hindered, as are efficiency, gains and carcass quality. We would like to reflect for a minute on the However, carcass weights were relatively similar: 909 pounds for Limousin and 912 pounds for the Angus due to nearly a 1.5 percent increase in Limousin dressing percentage compared with Angus. By comparing cattle with a similar final live weight of 1,400 pounds, each percentage increase in dressing percent is worth an extra 14 pounds of carcass weight. Considering the current hanging carcass price for the week the cattle were harvested, the $1.90 Wulf Limousin (31 Head) progress we have made. Wulfs were selecting for Docility long before the EPDs came along. In 1990 when NALF implemented the Docility Scoring System, we quickly adapted and made it part of our data collection. Each calf crop, both bulls and heifers, are given a docility score. These scores are submitted to NALF and this data goes into the Docility EPDs. The flighty or aggressive cattle are sent to the feedlot and are not sold or kept as breeding stock. Genetic selection works, and great improvement has been made in the breed; going from a base Docility EPD of 0 in 1990 to a breed average of in The Wulf Docility EPD strides are even more profound, rising to a herd average Angus (18 head) per pound of carcass equated to an extra 14 pounds or almost $30 per head. Feed efficiency has never been as economically relevant as it is today. Beef producers are in the business of producing red meat. In the current era of record high corn prices, the efficiency gained by using Limousin in a crossbreeding system can offer a real time advantage in lowering the number one cost in beef production feed. We invite you to give us a try and check out the difference in Docility after 40 years of selection. 6 From: Dr. Eugene R. Anderson Morris Veterinary Center Welcome to the Wulf Limousin Sale. This is a very exciting beef cattle program for which to provide animal health services. Genetic improvement drives the program and animal health keeps it going forward. The Wulf s have an open book approach to their herd s health and encourage me to follow through on any questions or issues that may arise. I am available sale day and also by phone or morrisvet@fedtel.net. The Wulf crew and I encourage you to contact us if any problems surface with your purchased animals; together we will find a solution. Transporting and commingling are high risk times for sickness to occur. I encourage you to keep new animals isolated from your herd for 21 days. Make ration changes gradually and consult with your veterinarian on any needed vaccinations to acclimate Wulf cattle to your herd. To limit the health risks to your herd the Wulfs have been testing the breeding stock extensively for Johnes and BVD. Minnesota has a TB Free status. Official health certificates will be issued for all animals the day of sale and sent with transporter. Any animals needing additional tests to meet individual state requirements will be done as soon as possible after the sale. To insure the health of those you purchase, sale animals have been vaccinated against IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, Leptospirosis, Brucellosis, and Clostridial diseases. The animals have been poured for control of internal and external parasites. Yearling bulls have been scrotal measured. We encourage you to have a fertility test and breeding soundness exam done before turn out. Pregnant females have had pregnancy reconfirmed just prior to the sale and have been vaccinated for calf diarrheal diseases. Open females have had a reproductive rectal exam. A purchase from Wulf Limousin Farms begins a commitment by this family to your herd improvement. 7 Wulf Limousin Index Simplify Your Sire Selection A method to simplify your bull selection and help you find the correct herd sires for your operation! Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by EPDs and performance data? How do you take all of this data into account when choosing the best bull for your operation? The indexes presented here can simplify your bull selection and help best match herd sires to your operation. Single-trait selection is not wise; rather, cattle with a balance of traits that match your production needs provide the greatest profit potential. Therefore, indexes were developed to combine traits of economic importance for different types of bull customers: Breeding first-calf heifers. Producing calves for the mainstream market using terminal sires. Producing calves for the mainstream market while keeping replacement heifers. Producing calves for Laura s Lean Beef using terminal sires. Producing calves for Laura s Lean Beef while keeping replacement heifers. Producing calves for higher marbling programs using terminal sires. Producing calves for higher marbling programs while keeping replacement heifers. Each index combines 19 different measurements grouped into six economically-important categories: Calving Ease = Birth Weight EPD, Calving Ease Direct EPD, Actual Birth Weight. Maternal = Scrotal EPD, Milk EPD, Calving Ease Maternal EPD, Actual Scrotal. Docility = Docility EPD. Growth = Weaning Wt EPD, Yearling Wt EPD, Carcass Wt EPD, Actual WW, Actual YW. Carcass = Ribeye EPD relative to Carcass Wt EPD, Yield Grade EPD, Marbling EPD, Ultrasound ribeye relative to YW, Ultrasound marbling (Muscling and marbling are given greater or lesser importance depending on the index see individual index descriptions). Visual = Wulf s visual score. The icons listed below appear directly adjacent to each sale lot to serve as a quick reference to the corresponding Wulf Limousin Index. These bulls have all passed our strict quality and performance criteria. You will also find several pens of high performance bulls loaded with performance, muscle, and capacity. We will again offer about 40 LimFlex, Limousin X Angus Hybrid bulls for those wishing to take advantage of heterosis. This bull selection offers the genetics of many proven sires in the Wulf program as well as showcasing some of the first calves out of our new sires. Wulf Yearling Bulls We are excited with how some of these young sires are proving themselves for both us and our bull partners. Docility is a huge part of any genetic decision at Wulf Limousin Farms. We know docile animals perform better in the cow herd, the feedlot as well as the cooler. We have selected and culled with this as our #1 priority and are delighted to offer you a set of cattle where 85% are above breed average for docility EPD and 62% of the offering is in the top 20% of the breed for Docility EPD.
