5 Dear Fellow Gelbvieh Enthusiasts A year s worth of time has passed us by again. The Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa Board of Directors and myself thank you for your participation and involvement in the breed and the activities of the association. This past summer we held our first summer tour in quite some time. The turnout of the participants and stops was refreshing to see. This year s tour will coincide with the National Junior Show, which will be held in Waterloo. Please plan to attend and volunteer for this great activity if at all possible. Many hands will be needed to showcase Iowa and the Gelbvieh breed. The Iowa State Fair always has an impressive show for Gelbvieh cattle and as always is a great place to visit with like minds and be challenged by forward thinkers. It is a fun atmosphere with lots of excitement and plenty to do. The fall finds us making preparations for the Iowa Beef Expo. This showcase for Gelbvieh Breeders and the Iowa cattle industry quite possibly brings more cattle producers to a single event than anywhere else in the Midwest. I would encourage your participation at the Iowa Beef Expo to attend annual meetings, banquets, see the latest in technology and equipment and most of all visit with breeders and sort through the cattle. 9 Rafter R Gelbvieh Due to my health and far too many birthdays, we have made a very difficult decision to sell our herd of Purebred Gelbvieh and Balancer cows. We started purebreds in After trying some other breeds before 1980, I became thoroughly convinced I made the best choice in choosing Gelbviehs. I have appreciated and enjoyed them as well as all the great people associated with the breed. We are offering the very top of the herd and keeping cows 10 years old and older as well as a few fall calvers that have been raising their calves on the stalks. They are thinner than I d like to sell. 12 Frank Hayek September 16, January 5, 2018 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

13 On January 5th, the Gelbvieh breed lost a passionate cattleman. For the last 40 years, Frank Hayek and his family have operated FMH Gelbviehs. It was very fitting that Frank s AGA member number was 2020, for his vision into the future of his herd was 20/20. Cattle have always been a part of Frank s life. He grew up milking cows and eventually moved into purebred Gelbvieh cattle. From the beginning, Frank was always looking to improve the quality of cattle. He learned how to perform his own Embryo Transfer (ET) in the early 1980 s and was still doing his own ET and AI work up until his passing. Frank loved to travel to Gelbvieh sales and enjoyed talking with other breeders and learning about their programs. Over the years, he consigned many high quality bulls and females to the Iowa Beef Expo. One of his most recent sale highlights was FMH 2020 Mr At Ease 510C who now resides in Canada and is quickly gaining popularity as an AI sire. During his years of involvement in the AGA and GBOI, Frank served on the GBOI board of directors. He was always willing to share new ideas to improve the association. Frank was a man that would always lend a helping hand. He loved to serve people and always made sure there was hot coffee and donuts available at the GBOI booth. Frank was as honest as the day is long, and as humble as they come. His Gelbvieh cattle were a big part of his life, but nothing was more important to him as his Faith and his Family. Frank Hayek is a man that will be dearly missed, but his big smile and caring personality will always be remembered.
