Miniature Hereford entries soar with over 400 entries for the open and junior shows at the 2017 National Western WOW! Congratulations to all of our breeders and exhibitors for continuing to make history. Our sincere thanks to everyone who helped with weigh-in, show programs, staging, awards and other duties for both the open and junior shows. The success of the shows would not be possible without ALL of your help and we greatly appreciate it! Unfortunately the sale was cancelled this year due to the lack of consignments. We believe the reason for this is the success our breeders are having with private sales and it was not necessary for the association to conduct the sale as a benefit to our members. Hope everyone enjoyed visiting with old and new friends & had a relaxing evening at the banquet. We are grateful for your donations & the purchase of items at the silent and live auction. As a reminder our breed association photographer, Janet Jenkins, took backdrop and show ring pictures during the open and junior show. Please your request for a photo DVD to jbarwcattleco@aol.com. Don t forget to check the MHBA website and magazine for upcoming shows and junior members plan now to attend the Junior Nationals in Chillicothe, Missouri. What a great family event for the summer Don t want anyone to miss any entry deadlines. Congratulations to our scholarship winners Shawnee Gibbons; Kelli Wicks; Elijah Patten & Brice White. 6 Profit Tip: Using Replacement Strategies to Decrease Real Cow Depreciation By: Matt Stockton & Devin Broadhead, Nebraska Extension, University of Nebraska Lincoln accounting, real depreciation is an attempt to relate the change in value of an asset as IN it ages and/or declines in usefulness. For example, when you buy a car and drive off the dealer s lot, it loses on average 11% of its initial value. Simply, the car is now worth less because it is a used car. Depreciation expense represents the value difference between the current value of the asset and its value at the beginning of the time period being considered. Depreciation is valuable in the sense that it measures the costs of asset maintenance and tracks it over time. In order to remain in operation, an ongoing business requires its functional parts and assets to be maintained in productive condition. Accounting for depreciation serves as a tool for tracking the progression of asset maintenance and its effects on the business, profitability, and net worth. Cow-calf producers and ranchers encounter a type of depreciation referred to as replacement costs. Like most agriculturally based businesses, the biological component of the business presents some unique challenges in predicting productivity and asset value changes. This uniqueness provides both challenges and opportunity for ranchers to build a myriad of strategies to streamline the economic performance of their operation. This article addresses the basis for developing economically viable replacement strategies. The cow is the base productive unit of ranching. Cows, like many biological organisms, are each unique and vary in productive capacity and lifespan. This makes depreciation or replacement costs difficult to account for on a per head basis. Note, however, the decision to cull or buy is generally done on the individual animal basis. Replacement costs are known to be one of the most expensive areas of the cow-calf production enterprise. An integrated strategic replacement plan can make the difference between an operation s economic failure and success. The first key to building a viable replacement strategy is having accurate records on ages and herd productivity. The old axiom If you can t measure it, you can t manage it holds true in developing any kind of plan. Most ongoing cow-calf enterprises will cull a certain number of cows annually; many times animals are purchased at a premium and sold at cull value. Ranching, like many agricultural enterprises, has negative or out flowing cash for most months of the year with very few positive cash flows (at harvest). As indicated, depreciation is one of these costs. Deprecation is often referred to as a non-cash expense. This means as a cow s value is increasing or decreasing, no cash changes hands. Depreciation helps track costs which, in the case of the ranching operation, relate directly to the cows. For simplicity and clarity, we present the straight-line method to estimate depreciation costs as expressed in the following equation: IV SV / PL = Depreciation *IV (Initial Value); SV (Salvage Value); PL (Productive Lifespan) The three primary components of this equation include 4 Miniature Hereford News; Issue 27 Official Publication of the MHBA

Initial Value (IV), Salvage Value (SV), and Productive Lifespan (PL). By understanding the nature of these components, managers and decision makers may devise modifications in production and/or management practices to improve current economic performance. Each of the three parts of this equation relate directly to management or production choices. The initial value of replacement cows can be altered but potential impact on productivity has to be considered. The salvage value of an animal depends on how others perceive that animal s value and may be altered, but those alterations come with costs. The average productive lifespan of the herd is a factor of environment, genetics, and management. Production/management choices in concert with the other two factors make the difference in success or failure of optimizing the cow s productive lifespan. Manipulating each of these three factors comes with limitations, costs, and benefits. There are several resources available that discuss depreciation/replacement strategies with focus on one or more of the three components of the depreciation equation (see resources below). The key here is to understand the effects that each of the three components has on productivity and depreciation expense. Broadly speaking, increasing initial value without altering anything else increases expenses; the opposite occurs when initial value is decreased. This is why during a period of increasing market prices, depreciation expense increases. An expensive cow purchased at the market s peak will not be depreciated out until sometime in the future long after prices have fallen. In this case, expenses are increasing while revenue is shrinking. The market is likely to have the opposite effect on salvage value, As it increases, replacement costs decrease. A longer PL reduces annual expenses, which amounts to an overall reduction in replacement. Additional ways to reduce initial value without affecting productivity include purchasing herd replacements that are younger and developing them yourself. Since replacement animals follow a seasonal pattern like terminal animals, purchases can be made to minimize costs. If adequate resources are available and/or purchased at the right price, retaining more of your own calves may be a viable option. In addition, if your development program and feed costs are suitable, non-pregnant animals or excess pregnant ones may be sold to recapture lost revenue from increased Hereford.org Spring

retention numbers. Be cautious with this strategy as retaining your own animals may cost less but it also affects revenues. These strategies vary in degree of success depending on whether cattle prices are trending up or down and whether management can use its resources to capture savings and lower costs. Other options include taking in heifers for a neighbor or others which may provide some economy of effort and/or added income, subsidizing the initial value. The price received for a cow or heifer after being used in the productive process is considered the salvage value. Many producers will cull cows for being open at weaning or losing a calf during the grazing period. If sold immediately, the cow is at her lowest value. Young animals may have more value than aged ones but probably not significantly. Some producers have found ways to minimize the number of cows they sell of this type. Some have suggested increasing the breeding season to get later cycling cows pregnant and then sell them as bred cows or cowcalf pairs. Cull animals can also be retained and fed to heavier weights to increase returns. Additionally, cows can be sold at an age where they are still productive. For cows that have lost their calf, an option might be to graft on another calf. The real challenge comes when the calf is lost in the later part of the grazing season. At this point, questions about the cow s pregnancy and the cost of replacing her versus keeping her come into play. It makes no sense to sell the cow for cull value and incur the cost of a replacement at a much higher value if she is pregnant. If this cow is undesirable and should be culled, she may be sold later when she calves as a cow-calf pair. Many times the cost of keeping a dry cow is minimal compared to the cost of selling and repurchasing a replacement. Choice should always be made considering market conditions and resource conditions. The effect of each of these strategies is different from year to year depending on market conditions and ranch resource availability. For instance, during drought conditions, removing cows may work in favor of keeping the business economically viable. Increases in the productive lifespan are controlled by management, environment, and production choices. For instance, hybrid vigor (heterosis) can increase cow longevity and reproductive performance. However, some operators will not run crossbred cows, making this option not viable. Other factors include using individual matings that reduce individual defects such as bad udders, large teats, poor legs, and other traits which would lead to a shortened productive lifespan. In some cases, longevity might be increased by certain nutritional regimes and by managing cows appropriately by size (for example, large cows may need more supplementation then smaller ones). Heifer selection should be based on management style and environment. Two- and three-year-old cows are still growing so special attention to them may help reduce dropout rates. Ensure that the mitigating actions used for this age class of cow return at least as much revenue as the costs incurred; otherwise, the productive lifespan gain will cost more than it returns, resulting in reduced profit. The ideas discussed here do not make up an exhaustive list and may not be viable for particular operations or time periods. In summary, profit comes from two general areas: costs savings and increased revenues. Looking at the challenges ranchers are currently facing, it is wise to look closely at cow depreciation expenses and consider potential options for saving on costs and/or generating increased revenues. 6 Miniature Hereford News; Issue 27 Official Publication of the MHBA

Should you vaccinate very young calves? By: Heather Smith Thomas; Source: BEEF Magazine While research shows some benefit to vaccinating very young calves, it s usually best to wait a while, even in calves that were shorted on colostrum. In the 2-week old calf, there are two things you need to be concerned about. One is age, the other is colostrum intake. Typically, even in a calf that got no colostrum [and no maternal antibodies to interfere with building its own immunity], the response for making antibodies [when vaccinated early] is not great under 3 weeks of age. If they have higher levels of maternal antibodies than the older calves, they also may not respond [to vaccination], says Chris Chase, Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, South Dakota State University. We did a study in very young calves [2 or 3 days of age]. We vaccinated them at that age, then came back seven months later [weaning time] and challenged them. From a statistical standpoint it worked, but from a production standpoint I don t think producers would be very excited about it because in the control group, 80% of them got sick [when challenged] and in the vaccinated group, 20% of them got sick. If a person waits until those calves are 3 to 4 weeks of age, less than 5% of the vaccinates would get sick, he explains. When do you vacinate in your program? Age at vaccination is a big factor, but it all goes back to individual situations. If someone is having trouble with summer pneumonia, we d have to say the vaccine at a young age [several weeks old] probably doesn t hurt them, but how much good it actually does those calves may be minimal. Then it goes back to colostral intake and whether it was low, and we still have the issue that they are young when you are giving the vaccine. A person can work with their own herd health veterinarian and take a look at what is going on in their particular situation, and figure out what to be most concerned about, Chase says. However, young calves sometimes develop clostridial infections (enterotoxemia) that are not resolved with commonly-used vaccines. Calves may succumb to acute toxic gut problems caused by Clostridium perfringens type A or E, rather than C or D, which are included in many 7 or 8-way clostricial vaccines. The calves or their dams have been vaccinated, but calves are still dying. In this situation a producer may need help from the veterinarian to figure it out. Then you will probably be looking at an autogenous vaccine (created from pathogen samples from your own herd), says Chase. 8 Miniature Hereford News; Issue 27 Official Publication of the MHBA

11 inevitable truths about Calving Season Written by Ranch House Designs Account Manager, Ashley Fitzsimmons It s the most wonderful time of the year! Calving season is in full swing. My newsfeed, camera roll and Snapchat stories are filled with all the trials, sleepless nights and success stories that come along with this season on the ranch. In my many years of calving seasons, I ve learned there are 11 inevitable truths to this stressful and rewarding time. TRUTH 1: THE FIRST COW THAT CALVES WILL NEVER BE IN THE FIRST SET OF HEAVIES YOU HAVE SORTED. It never fails, you go out to check the pasture farthest away (that you sorted the day before) and there s a cow off by herself with a fresh calf! TRUTH 2: THOSE NAPS YOU TOLD YOURSELF YOU WERE GET- TING DURING NIGHT CHECKS, NOT HAPPENING. Sometimes at 3am you keep yourself going by thinking of that nice 10am nap you re going to take. Turns out 10am came and went with no nap in sight! TRUTH 3: IF YOU DON T SHOWER FOR JUST 1 MORE DAY THE COWS WILL ACCEPT YOU AS THEIR OWN. I m not sure if this is a scientific fact but it s (apparently) what you tell your wife when asked how long it s been since you showered. TRUTH 4: THIS IS THE MOST EXCITING TIME OF YEAR. Watching new life come into the world is magical. Seeing your hard work, breeding decisions (hopefully) and planning all come together as that calf is being born and that cow becomes the mom you knew she could be is amazing. TRUTH 5: SOMETIMES COWS AREN T AS GRATEFUL AS YOU THINK THEY SHOULD BE. Cold nights and snow are just part of spring calving season in the west. However, when you spent all day bedding down a calving pen and the cows still choose the lay 3 feet away, not under the shelter or on bedding it s hard to think of them as anything but ungrateful. TRUTH 6: SOMETIMES CALVES AREN T AS GRATEFUL AS YOU THINK THEY SHOULD BE. Whether you just pulled one, had to bring one into your truck to warm up, or helped it find its first-calf-heifer momma that is suddenly MIA you ve put a lot of work into getting that calf here! Surely that warrants them acting right and not trying to kick you, head butt you or be a fence crawler! 10 Miniature Hereford News; Issue 27 TRUTH 7: IF YOU GET VOLUNTEERED TO TAG A SPECIFIC CALF-ITS MOM IS PROBABLY NUTS. Go tag the calf, he said. I promise she s real friendly, he said. Then you immediately regret taking on this chore as a momma cow comes charging at you. TRUTH 8: THINGS GO WRONG WHEN YOU HAVE OTHER PLANS. It never fails, you re headed to a kid s game, Valentine s Day dinner or some other event that requires clean clothes and a timely appearance when something big something goes wrong. Three hours and several missed calls later you just want to nap. TRUTH 9: SIRI HAS NO IDEA WHAT YOU RE SAYING. Trying to text hands-free during calving season is a chore in itself! You ll have whole conversations with misspelled words that make no sense. You just hope the recipient can decipher your own special calving season morse code. TRUTH 10: FIRST CALF HEIFERS ARE IDIOTS. These poor girls just can t help it. They go the wrong way, they get nervous and they just don t have the rhythm down. No matter how good the group as a whole is, there are always those couple girls that just cause problems. They don t mean to (for most of them) they just don t know any better. #rookies TRUTH 11: THIS IS PERFECT WAY TO GROW UP. I can t imagine my life if I hadn t grown up on a ranch. It s a lifestyle I m thankful for every day. The lessons learned, especially during calving season (even as an adult!), are real-world, immediate and second-to-none. Raising a family with the patience, values and work ethic it takes to make it through calving season and then turn around and do it all over again is invaluable! Good luck to all of you in the throes of #calfwatch17! Source: Ranch House Designs Official Publication of the MHBA

Showing in the Heartland June 20-25, 2017 Excitement is mounting for the 4th Annual Miniature Hereford Junior Nationals (MHJN) to be held June 20-25, 2017 in Chillicothe, Missouri! This rapidly growing event brings young cattle enthusiasts from across the country to learn about the beef industry, compete in contests, and develop lasting friendships. It is a highlight of the summer for the families it welcomes. Over 70 kids and their families from 9 states participated in the MHJN last year in Ames, Iowa. The kids ranged in age from 3 to 22. We expect even more families from more states again in The MHJN introduces youth to competition in a way that s comfortable for them and their families. They experience the thrill of winning and learning how to lose gracefully. Our aim is to develop leadership, sportsmanship, and a passion for the kind of work ethic it takes to succeed as adults. They will participate in several contests during the event to increase their knowledge and skill set. Contest Information The exhibitors are divided into divisions by age for all of the contests; Pre-Junior (3-7), Junior (8-11), Intermediate (12-15) & Seniors (16-22). The top 5 place winners are recognized in each contest and an overall premier exhibitor is selected for each age group. Cattle Show and Exhibitor Showmanship The contestants have two competitions that involve them exhibiting their cattle. In Showmanship, a judge evaluates them on how well they present the animal in the show ring, often also asking the exhibitors questions to determine their knowledge of cattle production. The pinnacle event of the MHJN is the Cattle Show, where exhibitors present their animals and a judge selects cattle he/she believes best represent the characteristics that are most desired in the breed. In addition to exhibiting their cattle, these growing agriculture advocates compete in contests like: Sales Talk is a mock selling contest in which each contestant tries to sell an animal to a buyer. This contest builds confidence in public speaking and gives each contestant the chance to describe the best qualities of his/her livestock. Judging Contest gives contestants the chance to test their livestock evaluation skills by ranking four cattle from 1st to 4th in each of several classes and having their rankings compared with those of a panel of expert judges. No clippers will be used during this event. Team Fitting teaches kids to work together as they prepare a calf to be ready for exhibition. This takes communication, teamwork, and the ability to identify and use each person s strengths. Arts & Crafts allows contestants to submit an entry of artistic medium (painting, video, sculpture, posters, music, etc.) to display their talent. Contestants can enter up to three entries, however, only one entry per exhibitor will be able to place in the top 5 of their age division. BBQ Cook-off teaches kids to work together as they prepare a beef dish and present a skit or presentation promoting their beef dish to a panel of judges. Beef and grills will be provided. To ensure a successful event financial support is vital, this is a great opportunity to make an impact on the future of our breed and the agricultural community. 34 Region Reports Region 3 Hello from the Midwest. Hopefully everyone s calving season is off to a great start. Here in Region 3 we ve had an abnormally mild winter & are waiting to what that will translate to for Spring/Summer. As I write this, we re getting ready to head out for our recently added Ohio Beef Expo show in Columbus. The show looks primed to be another good one. We have 53 head entered from 22 Exhibitors (8 of which will be showing there for their first time!!), representing 5 States. The Ohio Beef Expo folks, along with the governing Ohio Cattlemen s Association folks were extremely pleased with the show we put on there last year and have conveyed that they re excited to see us continue to grow into the future at the event. Congratulations in advance go to the show winners and many thanks to all our exhibitors for supporting this show!! As is always the case, on behalf of Region 3 Breeders, as well as all those participating in and benefiting from the show in Louisville, I want to formally thank the MHBA and it s governing board for their support of this show. May we all reap the rewards from the type of exposure granted by being a part of a show of this size and quality. Additionally, we are in the planning stages for the follow-up show to our probationary show last year at the Indiana State Fair. We were very well received there last year and the show went very well. I am hoping to add some more numbers to that show this year to enable us to get over their probationary threshold and get our breed recognized as one of the formal shows in their premium structure. I ll provide updates on that show and entry information via the website once details become more solid. Here s hoping you all have a wonderful Spring and Early Summer. Ben Lisby, Region 3 Director Region 5 It has been a busy start to the year with shows, sales and calving. I would like to say Thank You to all of the consignors at the Iowa Beef Expo, the sale was great. All exhibitors and consignors did a great job representing the breed, it is exciting to see the interest continue to grow. Don t forget to mark your calendars for June for the Miniature Hereford Jr. Nationals in Chillicothe, MO. This is a great event for all youth, even if it is their 1st show or 100th it will be fun, educational and unforgettable. Please keep the families that have been devastated by wildfires throughout the panhandle of Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas in your prayers. Brent White, Region 5 Director Region 8 It has been a winter to remember with excessive snow to the north and flooding to the south making challenges for us all. With spring here I know we are all happy to see the flowers blooming and the calves playing in the fields. Now is a good time to begin your plans for the shows you will attend this year. There are new shows in our region as well as some exciting changes in a couple of our established ones, so watch for s to come out with that information. We also want to remind you to take a few minutes to fill out your ballots and vote in this year s MHBA and MHYF election. It is important that you are part of this process to aide in the growth and progress of our associations. To all those affected by the wild fires in the various areas, please know that you are in everyone s thoughts and prayers. The Miniature Hereford breed is growing with leaps and bounds as well as our MHBA membership. We would like to welcome all of our new breeders here in Region 8. If you have any questions or need some help, don t hesitate to contact us at duvalfarms@gmail.com. 32 Miniature Hereford News; Issue 27 Jerry DuVal, Region 8 Director Official Publication of the MHBA
