6 Beef Calving: 4 Steps for Helping Stressed Newborns Calving season is upon us and while we all hope for easy, unassisted deliveries and robust calves, sometimes the reality is a prolonged birth in cold, wet weather and a stressed, exhausted new calf. Follow these 4 steps to help stressed newborns get a strong start: 1. Know when a calf needs your help. Within the first hour, a new calf should stand, walk, find its mama s teats and begin suckling energetically. A new calf that can t get up and is fading fast needs your help, pronto! 2. Provide basic first-aid. First, clear the calf s nose and mouth to ensure an open airway. Next, stimulate the calf with a vigorous rubdown. Finally, get the calf dried off and moved to a warm place. 3. Feed colostrum immediately. The single most important thing you can do for a stressed newborn is to feed warm colostrum or a colostrum replacer that contains at least 100g of globulin protein in a single feeding. Go ahead and use a tube feeder if the calf is too weak for a bottle. 4. Be prepared. It s a motto the Boy Scouts live by and so should you. Well before calving season begins, put a new calf care kit in every vehicle that will be used to check your herd. It should include: Towels or blankets for drying/warming Warming box Clean bucket and whisk Clean calf bottle Clean nipples and feeding tube Colostrum alternatives Following these 4 steps will allow you to do the right thing at the right moment when emergencies arise. Plus, it just makes good business sense to plan ahead in order to protect your investment! 4 Miniature Hereford News; Issue #22 Official Publication of the MHBA

8 What is Raising cattle means to also raise healthy beef. Beef Quality Assurance is a nationally coordinated, state implemented program that provides systematic information to U.S. beef producers and beef consumers of how common sense husbandry techniques can be coupled with accepted scientific knowledge to raise cattle under optimum management and environmental conditions. BQA guidelines are designed to make certain all beef consumers can take pride in what they purchase and can trust and have confidence in the entire beef industry. BQA programs have evolved to include best practices around good record keeping and protecting herd health, which can result in more profits for producers. When better quality cows leave the farm and reach the market place, the producer, packer, and consumer all benefit. When better quality beef reaches the supermarket, consumers are more confident in the beef they are buying, and this increases beef consumption. The efforts of BQA across the nation have been instrumental in recent successes that continue to re-build and sustain beef demand. Through BQA programs, producers recognize the economic value of committing to quality beef production at every level - not just at the feedlot or packing plant, but within every segment of the cattle industry. The guiding principles of BQA are based on these core beliefs: WE BELIEVE production practices affect consumer acceptance of beef. WE BELIEVE the BQA Program has and must continue to empower beef producers to improve the safety and wholesomeness of beef. WE BELIEVE these fundamental principles are the fabric of the BQA Program. What is Quality Beef? A large part of the beef industry s job involves making sure that beef is safe and wholesome for consumers. BQA 6 Miniature Hereford News; Issue #22 Why is it important? Empowering people because producers can make a difference. Taking responsibility because it s our job, not someone else s. Working together because product safety and wholesomeness is everyone s business. began as an effort to ensure that violative chemical residues were not present in marketed beef. Originally called Beef Safety Assurance, the program s early emphasis was on assuring the real and perceived safety of beef. However, BQA has become much more than a safety assurance program. Today, BQA programming is expanding with information to help producers implement best management practices that improve both quality grades and yield grades of beef carcasses. Previous National Beef Quality Audits have summarized that the number one leverage point to improve competitiveness and regain market share was to improve beef quality, uniformity and consistency. Additionally, the sectors that sell beef products indicated that improvements were needed in tenderness, palatability and a reduction in excess trimmable fat. Many consumers are familiar with quality grades and may make purchasing decisions based on quality grades at retail. But, within the consumer atmosphere the term quality can be confusing. Consumers and even producers often find it difficult to distinguish between the various and different ways to define quality with regard to beef. We can better understand quality if we dissect the various contexts in which we consider quality. Click the links below to learn more about each aspect of quality. Eating Characteristics Quality beef consistently satisfies customer expectations for eating and preparation characteristics. Expectations may include tenderness, flavor, juiciness, color, leanness, packaging, ease of preparation -- and price. Studies suggest that beef from carcasses grading at least USDA Select are likely to be acceptable in eating quality for most U.S. consumers (see USDA Quality Grading ). The desire for improved consistency in beef products comes through loudly in every phase of the beef consumer research. The genetic base for beef is relatively wide due to the wide range of environmental conditions in which Official Publication of the MHBA

9 cattle are raised in the U.S. Many breeds and genetic lines are used, making it difficult to produce uniform animals important for managing getting consistent products to consumers. Value for the money is also very important to consumers as they select beef products against other competing meat and vegetable proteins. Safety and Wholesomeness Beef products are harvested and processed under strict government inspection systems that ensure it is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. The nation s commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is subject to established federal or state inspection requirements. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is charged with ultimate responsibility for protecting the U.S. meat supply under the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA). For more information go to: gov. The food safety system employed by FSIS to accomplish its mission has evolved to one in which a science-based framework is used to identify and prevent food safety risks. This framework is known as the Pathogen Reduction/Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (PR/HAC- CP) system. PR/HACCP allows for the use of science and technology to improve food safety in order to prevent the introduction of pathogens in the products we consume. The implementation and verification of PR/HACCP plans have led to a dramatic decline in the incidence of food borne illnesses. Foreign countries that export meat, poultry, and egg products to the U.S. are required to establish and maintain inspection systems that are equivalent to those of the U.S. FSIS audits foreign inspection systems and re-inspects meat and poultry at the port-of-entry to ensure that foreign countries have maintained equivalent inspection systems. Recently, the U.S. Bioterrorism Act of 2003 regulations included; (1) the registration of food facilities exporting to the U.S. and (2) the prior notice of imported food shipments. USDA Yield Grading Beef yield grades show differences in the total yield of retail cuts. Yield grades estimate the amount of boneless, closely trimmed retail cuts from the high-value parts of the carcass the round, loin, rib, and chuck. The USDA Yield Grades are rated numerically and are 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Yield Grade 1 denotes the highest yielding carcass and Yield Grade 5, the lowest. Thus, we would expect a YG 1 carcass to have the highest percentage of boneless, closely trimmed retail cuts, or higher cutability, while a YG 5 carcass would have the lowest percentage of boneless, closely trimmed retail cuts, or the lowest cutability. USDA Quality Grading A beef quality grade is a composite evaluation of factors that affect palatability of meat (tenderness, juiciness, and flavor). These factors include carcass maturity, firmness, texture, and color of lean, and the amount and distribution of marbling within the lean. Beef carcass quality grading is based on (1) degree of marbling and (2) degree of maturity. USDA beef quality grades are Prime, Choice, Select, Standard, Commercial, Utility, Cutter and Canner. Since quality grading is voluntary, not all carcasses are quality graded. Packers may apply their own house brand to merchandise their beef. Carcasses merchandised as ungraded beef usually are those that do not grade Choice or Prime. They generally are termed No Roll beef by the industry, because a grade stamp has not been rolled on the carcass. Industry Value BQA does more than just help beef producers capture more value from their market cattle: BQA also reflects a positive public image and instills consumer confidence in the beef industry. When producers implement the best management practices of a BQA program, they assure their market steers, heifers, cows, and bulls are the best they can be. Today, the stakes are even higher because of increased public attention on animal welfare. BQA is valuable to all beef and dairy producers because it: Demonstrates commitment to food safety and quality. Safeguards the public image of the dairy industry. Upholds consumer confidence in valuable beef products. Protects the beef industry from additional and burdensome government regulation. Improves sale value of marketed beef cattle. Enhances herd profitability through better management. Beef Checkoff supported BQA programs bring it all together. While the BQA Manual provides a framework for program consistency, the states still determine the best programs for their producers. Because the beef industry is so diversified, we wanted to allow states the opportunity to provide what is best for their producers. The BQA [Manual is the] overarching [protocol], providing some consistency across the state programs. They are good production practices to guarantee the quality of beef products, comments Dr. Dee Griffin, DVM. Find out how you can become BQA certified at Hereford.org Spring

Director of Scholarships Report The funds received from the 2016 calendars sales made it possible for the Miniature Hereford Youth Foundation to present three scholarships for this school year. All of our winners this year are receiving the John Johnson Memorial Scholarship for graduating High School Seniors. Our awardees have been involved with the Miniature Hereford breed not only in the breeding, raising, showing, and marketing aspect, but also as part of our youth taking on leadership roles to educate the general public. Each winner has had the opportunity to impart their knowledge of this amazing breed to not only the public who wanders through the show barns, but also through 4H and FFA projects. It is the MHYF Scholarship Committees pleasure to acknowledge the 2016 winners of the John Johnson Memorial Scholarships. $500 Winners: Lacy Larson, Santaquin, UT; Elijah Patten, Byers, CO; Naylen Scharer, Silverton, OR This year the MHYF Scholarship committee created its first Calendar front page contest. It is our hope that the sale of these calendars will continue to increase so that we will be able to offer multiple scholarships every year. We thank you for your continued support of the MHYF and our youth. Lacy Larson I am the oldest daughter of Tyson and Angela Larson from Santaquin UT. I have had a love for Agriculture and animals from a very young age and started showing with the 4H program when I was 10 yrs. old. I am an active member of the Payson FFA, Santaquin 4H, and Shadow Mountain Mini Herefords. I have participated in, and won many awards in events such as Extemporaneous speaking, Parliamentary Procedure, Equine and livestock judging. I have also participated in Fitting & Showing livestock including sheep, hogs, & Miniature Herefords. I have a love for the outdoors as well as playing the fiddle, singing & country dancing. I am an active member of my faith and am grateful for the opportunities I have had to further my knowledge and skills with animals. I am also grateful for those that have helped me along the way. I hope to continue working with animals, especially Miniature Herefords and horses and someday pass on my knowledge to the next generation. I will graduate from Payson High School this spring and plan to further my education at Snow college and then Utah State University. I am honored to be one of the recipients of the MHYF Scholarship that makes it possible for me to achieve my goals. Naylen Scharer My name is Naylen Scharer, I am seventeen years old and was born and raised in Silverton, Oregon. There I live with my Mom, Dad, and two of my four sisters. I am currently a senior at Silverton High School and will graduate with the class of 2016 in the spring with honors in agriculture. For the past four years I have been actively involved in my local FFA chapter and this year I was elected to the officer team as the chapter secretary. I live in a rural community rich in agriculture, but unfortunately, I did not grow up in a farm setting. Luckily, my freshman year of High School I was introduced to the miniature Hereford breed by upper classmen who came into my intro to agriculture class and introduced a unique opportunity. The Miniature Hereford Lease Program, through this program I signed on to lease an animal of my choosing. With this opportunity came responsibilities such as coming up to the farm and putting hours of training and work in until show, where I exhibited my animal at county fairs and the Oregon state fair. I have returned every summer since first falling in love with the breed and show. This upcoming summer will be my fourth year in the program. My plans for the future are to first attend four years at Oregon State University graduating with a major in Crop and Soil Science, perhaps proceeding on to get my masters. I then plan to get a job as a crop advisor for a co-op or private Ag Service Company or some other job in agronomy as the opportunity arises. As far as my future with the Miniature Hereford breed goes I do plan on beginning a small herd after college that I will use for meat and possibly income from breeding services and calf sales. 12 Elijah Patten Hello, my name is Elijah Patten, I reside in Byers, Colorado. I show cattle and also participate in livestock judging, my team and I took seventh at the 2015 American Royal. This fall I will be attending Northeastern Junior College in Sterling Colorado, I want to major in Production Agriculture and Ag business. I ve been involved with miniature Herefords for two years now, I started out by showing angus steers but they are bigger then what I can handle, so I went on a hunt to find something smaller, and easier for me to handle. Standing at a whopping 5 3 I decided on miniature Hereford s, when everyone asked why I decided to raise mini s I tell them they easier for me to handle. But also I tell them I m just a little guy with little cows. I would like to thank the miniature Herford youth foundation for awarding me this scholarship, I am truly blessed to be a member of such a great Association. 10 Miniature Hereford News; Issue #22 Official Publication of the MHBA

31 Left & Right: I converted an unused auto shop at the high school into an animal Lab. We calve the cows, and the calves visit the school. I share the lab and invite the success room (severe to moderate handicapped students) to participate with labs and be with the animals. It is an awesome feeling watching the students respond to these animals. Val (the calf born on Valentine s Day) put his head on Parkers shoulder and started licking his hand. It was an awesome moment. Submitted by Jason Hershfield Right: Super proud of all these kids! Showing for Soldiers in Paris, TX; Heifer on the left held her own against full size cattle and Herefords and was Reserve over all. Submitted by Cherokee Ranch Breeders, Leonard, TX Classifieds, Etc. Above: Quaid McIntyre showing MAU Princess Anna at the NWSS. Great form! Left: New to the world; Middle: Seeing double!; Right: A kid and his calf... Submitted by Tracy Kelliher, Kearney NE Reserve a Calf! $2,000 Pagosa Springs, CO WW Ranch - North We are now accepting reservations for our 2016 calves to begin arriving in March. With Grand Championships for twenty of our bulls, heifers, steers or their progeny, your odds are good to get a winner! To reserve a calf, we require a half down-payment with the balance due upon delivery after weaning in November. Heifers are $3,500 each, bulls $3,000 each, and steers $2,000 each - first come first served. In other words, whoever reserves first will have first choice among the babies! 32 Region Reports Region 5 Spring is coming! Hope all of you are having a successful calving season. The interest in our breed continues to grow and as many of you know we had a huge showing at the National Western Stock Show. Thank you to all of those who worked tirelessly to make the show a success and to all the exhibitors & breeders for presenting an outstanding group of cattle. I would also like to thank the consignors and buyers at the Iowa Beef Expo, despite negative temperatures and terrible roads we continue to see interests grow. We are continuing our efforts for the MHJN (Miniature Hereford Junior Nationals) to be held in Ames, Iowa scheduled for June We are looking forward to this event to develop our youth and further promote our breed. This event takes a considerable amount of funding so I would like to encourage all of our breeders to consider supporting this event a small donation will go a long way for our kids. We have already received some fantastic support with the Iowa Beef Expo donations lots from Lil Kaf Ranch with a semen lot donation of CT s Polli s Pacer purchased by Christenson Cattle Co. and Double T Cattle Co. for a semen lot donation of KW Thunderstuck purchased by Taylor Miniature Herefords. We would also thank Muir Embroidery for their donation lot and the support with T-Shirts. If you have not ordered your shirt please contact Kelli Wicks, she has done a great job spearheading this project. Thanks to all for your support of MHJN fundraising! Jerry DuVal, Region 8 Director Region 8 It looks like spring is here in Region 8 with daffodils and tulips blooming everywhere. Our calving season is off and running and hope yours is too. Please send us the photos of your new little ones so that we can put them in the Moos Letter. We would like to send out a welcome to all of our new members in the Region and I hope that I will meet each and every one of you sometime this year. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please don t hesitate to give me a call. If you do not currently receive our Moos Letter, or if you know of anyone else who would like to be on our list, please let me know. My family and I wish everyone in Region 8 as well as all of our Miniature Hereford families a wonderful spring and enjoyable calving season.
