Take A Closer Look At The IBBA Difference Membership in the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) brings credibility. Total Herd Reporting (THR) is rapidly becoming the industry standard for reporting beef seedstock performance information and the IBBA is emerging as a leader in THR. IBBA membership provides flexibility. Brangus, Red Brangus, Ultrablack, Ultrared, Brangus Gold it's your choice. You choose the genetics that best fit your costumer's needs. IBBA membership is full featured, not complex. The Brangus Automated Registry Network (BARN) is the most advanced and userfriendly registry system in the industry. In fact, for most breeders the BARN can eliminate the need for other herd management software and accomplish the registry reporting requirements at the same time. IBBA membership provides access. IBBA is an active participant in the development of Multi-Breed EPDs and participates in the Beef Cattle Decision Support web-based software developed by Colorado State University and the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium. Sorting and selecting genetics based on real economics, positions IBBA members and their customers for increased profitability. IBBA membership is global. IBBA is an active member of the US Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. allowing members to leverage their ability to market IBBA genetics worldwide. IBBA currently provides services to breeders in Australia, Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica and Mexico. The IBBA began in This association is the repository of all the registry information for all the of black Brangus cattle and most of the red Brangus cattle in the US. Brangus cattle represent the unexcelled combination of Angus quality and Brahman hardiness. The blend of these two breeds; 5/8 Angus and 3/8 Brahman results in a breed that better combines efficiency of production and excellence of end product than any breed. The mission of the IBBA is Preparing Brangus as the Commercial Cattle Breed of the 21st Century. IBBA empowers members to advance the quality, reliability and value of Brangus and Brangus influenced cattle; provides innovative programs and services which enhance the economic well-being of members and commercial customers. IBBA has adopted a Total Herd Reporting (THR) system that mandates that any registered animal be recorded and then be reported on each year. This is the primary distinction between purebred and registered is the registered animal has a documented pedigree, is enrolled in the THR program, is maintained each year by full disclosure and reporting and the owner or ranch is a member in good standing with IBBA. Brangus is a registered trademark owned by the IBBA. Please visit for further information. How Do You Use EPDs? By themselves, EPD on one animal have no meaning. This is because EPD are not absolute values. They are deviations from some preset value (base) that is determined individually by each breed. When EPD are used to compare two or more animals, however, the EPD have a great deal of meaning because the difference between the animals EPD predict the difference between the future calves of the animals for a given trait. EPD can also be used to determine how a bull ranks in the breed compared to the breed average for a given trait. Average Brangus Winter 2016 EPDs for Non-Parent Black Brangus CED BW WW YW Milk TM SC REA FT %IMF

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) Expected Progeny Difference (EPDs) is the best estimate of an animal s genetic merit for a particular trait. It takes into account the animals own performance compared with its contemporaries and the performance of its relatives compared against their contemporaries. Birth Weight (BW): predicts calf size and calving ease Weaning Weight (WW): predicts preweaning growth potential. Yearling Weight (YW): predicts overall growth potential. Milk (MK): predicts the, maternal contribution to weaning weight of the calf through milk production, behavior, immunity and other maternal environmental factors. Total Maternal (TM): predicts weaning weight of calves from a bull s daughters Scrotal Circumference (SC): predicts testicular size. EPD Definitions Birth Weight (BW) A sire's EPD (lb) for mature dam equivalent birth weight of calf. Progeny of sires with lower BW EPD values will generally be born with less calving difficulty. Weaning Weight (WW) A sire's EPD (lb) for 205-day, mature dam equivalent WW. A sire's WW EPD is an indication of growth to weaning. WW EPD does not indicate milk production. Yearling Weight (YW) A sire's EPD (lb) for 365-day, mature dam equivalent YW. The YW EPD is an indication of the progeny's post weaning gain performance. YW EPD is calculated by combining WW and post weaning gain performance to predict expected differences in weight performance at one year of age. Milk (MK) A prediction of the maternal genetic component of weaning weight, MK EPD does not directly indicate more or less milk production. The MK EPD is the expected difference (lb), due to maternal performance (which includes milk production) in the weaning weight of calves out of a bull's daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero MK EPD. A higher EPD indicates that the bull's daughters should produce more pounds of calf due to increased maternal performance, but a higher MK EPD may also indicate a need for higher nutritional inputs to support increased milk production. Total Maternal (TM) The expected overall difference (lb) in weaning weight of calves out of a bull's daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero maternal weaning EPD. The maternal weaning EPD is a measure of the genetic component of both growth and maternal ability. It is calculated by adding one-half the WW EPD to the MK EPD, and as a result, TM EPD is the only EPD for which there is no corresponding ACC. Scrotal Circumference (SC) Measured in centimeters, SC has been shown to have a strong influence on male fertility, however selection for extremes in scrotal size is not an effective method of affecting change in the trait, as it is subject to extreme environmental variation. While larger actual scrotal circumference is important in terms of how the bull can be expected to perform his duties of servicing cows, only SC EPD predicts the genetic value of the bull for SC that can be transmitted to his calves. Additionally, heifers sired by bulls with high SC EPD have been shown to reach puberty at significantly earlier ages than do daughters of bulls with low SC EPD. Ribeye Area (REA) REA EPD is a predictor of the muscularity of an animal's offspring in square inches. The REA EPD presented in this summary is for ultrasound REA as opposed to carcass REA. While there is a high correlation between ultrasound REA and carcass REA, they are not the same trait. Genetic progress for improved muscling is not direct using REA EPD from ultrasound, but still much improved over using actual ultrasound REA measures. % Intramuscular Fat (IMF) IMF EPD is presented in units of percent fat as determined by ultrasound. While IMF from ultrasound has a strong positive relationship to carcass marbling scores, they are not the same trait. Genetic progress for improved marbling is not direct using IMF EPD, but still much improved over using actual ultrasound IMF measures. Fat Thickness (FT) The ultrasound Fat Thickness EPD is comparable to the carcass Fat Thickness EPD and has the same limitations. In most cases, it is more desirable to select for less fat at the 12th rib, but selection to extremes can result in decreased carcass quality. Like the carcass equivalent, this EPD is measured in inches. 7

Brangus Built Commercial Program The International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) launched the Brangus Built commercial program designed to help producers identify and garner the added value associated with the Brangus influence of their commercial replacements. The Brangus Built program will give producers who use Brangus genetics an opportunity to highlight those cattle so they can be easily identified, said IBBA Director of Field Services and Commercial Marketing. Most importantly it will help commercial producers looking to purchase Brangus influenced replacements identify those cattle and rest assured they are not just a black or red cow with a little ear. Brangus Built cattle are commercial cattle that are identified as having high valued Brangus influence. The eligible cattle will be assigned ear tags that have the Brangus Built logo along with an individual ID number as well as plenty of room for the producer to add any identification that fits into their program (example: herd ID, dam and/or sire ID, lot number). These tags can stay with that animal indefinitely. For more than 65 years, the Brangus breed has been known to excel in maternal traits. Brangus cattle have the built-in heterosis from the combination of Angus and Brahman genetics the allows them to transcend other breeds in terms of longevity, fertility, udder soundness, early breed back, and other important maternal traits while still maintaining outstanding performance and carcass characteristics. The current lows in the nation s cow inventory and price of feeder cattle has caused a surge in the price of replacement females because so many producers are sending the heifers to the feedlots. The 38

Brangus Built program will help producers maximize their return because a buyer will be willing to spend more knowing those cattle have been identified as having Brangus influence. In the future, as commercial replacement female prices level off, it will be vital for producers to have an avenue that identifies the added value of their product. The Brangus Built program was designed with that in mind. Contact Kyle Dykes at (210) to find out about using Brangus genetics and how you can get enrolled for your FREE tags for a limited time, or visit us at for more information. SUPPORT BRANGUS The International Brangus Breeders Foundation (IBBF) offers an opportunity to all members to give in support of research, education and youth. Gifting to the foundation can be from large to small and everything in between as no donation is too large or too small to make a difference in support of this great breed of cattle. Donors may get a tax refund for their gift because IBBF is a not-for-profit, charitable organization. Please consider donating as much as you can to further support the future of the Brangus breed, Tommy Perkins, Ph.D., PAS, Executive Vice President, International Brangus Breeders Association OBJECTIVES To fund research activities for the purpose of advancing the livestock industry benefiting Brangus breeders and other beef producers today, and in the future To fund and support programs involving education and research of Brangus cattle Educate the beef cattle industry on topics such as Brangus genetics and other production practices 39

Caring For Your Newly Purchased Bull! Whatever system your bull has been evaluated in, young bulls do require an adjustment period prior to being used for breeding. This is referred by some as a hardening period. Others refer to it as a let down period. Young bulls, especially those of breeding age, do require attention for continued growth and proper development. Regardless if they are home raised or newly purchased, proper feeding, care and management now will give your bull the opportunity to continue growing and allow him to develop into a sound and profitable herd sire. Several management practices should be observed when newly purchased bulls are brought home. These practices can help ensure that each new bull has a long and productive future with good productive performance. Have an area with fresh water and good quality hay to keep the bull(s) in upon arrival, so they will have time to settle down and become familiar with the surroundings. After allowing to drink water and eat hay, you may feed additional energy at approximately 1 percent of body weight. If you are planning to turn the bull(s) out with the cow herd upon arrival, bring the herd to a holding area and allow the bull(s) to return to the pasture with the herd. Avoid turning your newly purchased bull(s) in with an older bull. We must reduce the chance of injury. Consider limiting the number of females you want to settle during the breeding season to 20 the first year. Avoid excessive loss of body condition before or during the breeding season. You may want to rest him for 1 to 2 weeks depending on the breeding activity of your herd. If necessary, feed him additional energy if excessive loss in body flesh condition is 42

noticeable. Hay and/or pasture alone will not provide sufficient nutrients to meet the requirements of young, growing, active bull(s). If there is one bull in the pasture, as he breeds the cows, record the breeding date. Non-return to heat is a good indication your bull is settling the cows. Treat for internal parasites at the end of the breeding season. Provide effective external parasite control as needed. Remember, bulls are guaranteed by consignors to be breeders only if they are managed correctly after the sale. Young bulls should be limited to a minimum number of cows to service. The number is decided by his age. The following guidelines can be used: Bull s Age...Number of Females 12 to 15 months...10 to to 18 months...12 to to 24 months...18 to months and older...25 to 35 Place young bulls in well fenced lots before and after breeding season to keep bulls away from cows in heat. There should be shade and plenty of clean water in each lot. Provide free-choice minerals and routinely treat for parasites. 43
