1 Barnyard Olympics 75 th Anniversary of the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Excitement and friendly competition is in store for the 75 th Annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. The Barnyard Olympics will take place on Friday, March 14, 2014 at approximately 5:00 p.m. (after the Market Steer Grande Champion is announced) in the Mercedes Tiger Football Stadium. This event is open to the 2014 Stock Show Exhibitors only. All participants must show their 2014 Exhibitor wrist band in order to participate in an event. Each Club or Chapter is encouraged to bring their cheering section with their cowbells to the event. The more noise we make, the more likely we will repeat that activity at future shows. There are several contests, some of which will need to have entry forms and some you will just need to show up for. The following pages are the contests planned:
2 Bubble Gum Blowing Contest: Three age groups: 9-12, and Judges will observe contestants blowing the biggest bubble. The contestants will line up into three age groups. A piece of gum will be given to each contestant and they will be given time to get the gum all warmed up. At the sound of a whistle each contestant will attempt to blow a bigger bubble than the other contestants. The person blowing the biggest bubble in each age group receives a prize. If there are ties there will be additional rounds to determine the winner(s). You may sign up for this event on the day of the activity. All exhibitors are welcomed.
3 Hay Stacking Contest: A team will consist of the three (3) members from the same 4-H Club or FFA Chapter. The contest will be limited to the first 8 teams who send in their entry applications. A 5 second penalty will be awarded for each broken bale. Each team will be allowed only 10 minutes to complete the task. All hay falling from the stack must remain where it lands. It cannot be picked up and restacked. A judge will mark each fallen bale so you know that the bale is considered dead. Time will start at the sound of the judges whistle Seniors 14 to 18 Stack 42 bales of hay in the least amount of time. Winners will be determined by combining the fastest time and height of the hay stack into one score. The hay stack must remain in place through the judging of the height portion of the contest to gain points for this portion of the contest Juniors Ages 9-13 This group will stack only 20 bales of hay and they can work as a team in completing the task. All of the rules above will remain in place for this age group. 7 SEND ENTRY FORM TO OUTHOUSE RACE Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show 1000 N. Texas Avenue Mercedes, Texas Racing Rules: Heat competitors will be determined by drawing a number out of a bucket prior to the initial race. Appropriate attire is recommended for pilot (i.e. helmets or hard hats, rubber gloves, snorkels, outhouse goggles, rubber boots, shower cap, and clothing that can be damaged,) protective clothing- knee and elbow pads. Note: It is your responsibility to provide your own attire as none will be provided by the RGV Livestock Show. Object of the Race and Obstacle Guidelines: After teams have been determined via bucket drawing, the first two teams will begin at the starting line. Pilot s seat must cover the throne hole and that person must be in the house at all times. Once the starting gun is fired, racers will push or pull their outhouses to the first yellow line. After the first line has been reached, the pilots may remove themselves from the throne and begin the first obstacle. The three obstacles are as follows and will be explained on race day: With no hands, I will make the toilet lid fair again Knee deep in muck and can t find my corn cob How come I always have to change the roll? I hate when it gets wet! Once beginning teams leave starting line, next two teams should be in starting position. Race course is approximately 300 ft. The course will be divided into two lanes. No outhouse or pushers/pullers may go into another s lane. If collision occurs, both teams will return to the starting line to restart race. Outhouse cannot re-cross first yellow line before pilot gets back inside and has the entire throne hole covered. At that point, outhouse will finish race at starting line. Winners will be determined by single elimination. All decisions by race officials are final and failure to follow any of these rules will disqualify team from advancing.
