3 Top 10 Exercises to Become a Better Equestrian They say it takes seven falls to make a rider. But there's a lot more to it than that. Check out this humorous list of 10 simple exercises that will help you become a better equestrian. 10. Drop a heavy steel object on your foot. Don't pick it up right away. Shout, "Get off, Stupid, GET OFF!" 9. Leap out of a moving vehicle and practice "relaxing into the fall." Roll lithely into a ball and spring to your feet. 8. Learn to grab your checkbook out of your purse and write out a $200 check without even looking down. 7. Jog long distances carrying a halter and a carrot. Go ahead and tell the neighbors what you are doing - they might as well know now. 6. Affix a pair of reins to a moving freight train and practice pulling to a halt. Smile as if you are having fun. 5. Hone your fibbing skills: "See hon, moving hay bales is FUN!" and "No, really, I'm glad your lucky performance and multimillion dollar horse won the blue ribbon. I am just thankful that my hard work and actual ability won me second place." 3. Borrow the US Army's slogan: Be All That You Can Be -- bitten, thrown, kicked, slimed, trampled, frozen Lie face down in a puddle of mud in your most expensive riding clothes and repeat to yourself, "This is a learning experience, this is a learning experience, this is..." 1. THE NUMBER ONE EXERCISE TO BECOME A BETTER EQUESTRIAN: Marry money. 7 Board of Director s Meeting 8/10/09 at Bill Rounds House Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM with George and Jennifer, Jan, Bill, Charlie, Jenn B-K and Deb in attendance Show It was a good show. People had a nice weekend, but there were some early problems with the grounds, and the turnout was off a little. We had problems with the water not being on, then it was on everywhere, no hot water, recently added dirt in the stalls covered the horses constantly, no one from the fair had prepared the bathrooms or the booth for occupancy. These concerns were brought before their board of directors, in hopes of some sort of compensation, but there was none. We d like to consider changing the date and location for the future. Change to a June weekend for the show. (Not to conflict with graduation for lodging purposes, which will boost attendance, and not to be the first group to use the grounds if we stay with Addison.) Explore the possibility of getting Rutland to where it can be used dirt in the Mandigo arena, portable stalls in the open buildings, PA system the lodging and restaurant options are better as well. Bill will talk to Richard after the fair, to see if this is something that can be worked towards. We discussed the fair Gymkhanas - 9/7/09 Labor Day at Rutland Fair. The usual 4-H only Gymkhana on Friday night we won t do. It appears that there won t be any 4-H kids in the barn for the 2 nd session, so it is too undependable to run the event strictly for 4-H members who will truck in special on that Friday night. Instead, we will plan a 2 nd Open Gymkhana on the last Saturday of the fair 9/12/09. It will not be a pointed event, but used to help boost the treasury and keep the horse area busy. Kathy Kennett s daughter, Cassie, has recently been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. We will do Rescue Race (the exhibition event) at the Labor Day Gymkhana as the benefit event for Cassie. $5 per rider and $5 per jumper, funds to go directly to her. We will also pass a hat for additional donations. On the same note, a local gymkhana rider, Zoe Brown, also is battling leukemia. They have been collecting money at the Friday night events for her benefit. A Donkey basketball has been offered, if a location can be secured, with the proceeds to go to Zoe. Bill is organizing that event. The Auction fundraiser with JP North that was on Saturday, April 11 th was a success. We had the use of the school for free and we made 10% of the total sales of the auction ($427.81). JP North provides all the goods and labor for the auction so it was a low effort event on our part. We will plan to do again next year and maybe even this fall. Deb asked if there was interest in sending horses to the breed barn in the Mandigo arena at the fair. She needs to call Sue Traverse, who will be organizing a breed barn at the Rutland Fair, working with Richard Rivers, to turn the Mandigo arena into a breed barn that showcases many breeds of horses. Jennifer D. and Charlie volunteered their horses for some of the time. We need to find out about how many days, can we change horses, etc. We agreed it should be a colored horse. We will fill in after we get the details. Everything Equine April at CVE The ApHC did not help us with the cost of the booth this year, they did get us promotional materials to distribute. We sold items in the booth Tshirts, Sweatshirts, bumper

8 stickers. We met a lot of folks, although attendance seemed to be down. We didn t pick up any new members, sold a few shirts, etc. The booth cost us $360 and we sold $196 in goods. Discussion about participating again in 2010 consensus was not to do it next year. Clinic Sunday, June 14. This was a successful event. There were 11 riders and a great Pot Luck Lunch. We made $125 after paying the clinician. All the participants learned a lot and enjoyed themselves. Depending on next year s schedule, we may move the date and either stay in Rutland, or move to Audro Acres. Debbie Hathaway has offered her place for next year s clinic if we would like to use it. It was agreed to offer the event again next year. Scholarship Jenn has information from other regional clubs regarding criteria. The board will review and decide how to proceed once we have the Gymkhana. Trail Ride Date change to 10/10/09 due to conflicts. George is working on it. Has preliminary approval for the same location as last year, but will continue to consider other locations. Discussion regarding a small fee ($5) to ride. Many other groups charge for their rides, so it is not out of the question. George reported that our checking account is $288 in the red right now. He has put personal funds in to keep us above water until the fair events occur. We also will have the Annuity reviewed to see what our options are, for getting at some of that money to pay off the credit card. (Ribbons for the year, show expenses) Deb will see if we can get $2000 out of it without a tremendous penalty. Our credit card company has closed their small business accounts, so we need to locate another credit card company. Jennifer B-K will go to the Chittenden (one of our sponsors) to see if they can issue us a card and what their program is. We discussed our membership fees and how low they are by comparison to any other club. They really have not ever been raised since the beginning of the club. We discussed increasing each membership by $2 (family $12, Individual $7) for next year, but will open it up for discussion at the fall membership meeting. It has been suggested that we members a notification, when a new newsletter is available online. Then they can read it online, print what they want, and save the club on copying and postage. We will also bring this up at the fall meeting and put on the membership form. Adjourned 8:30 PM. Respectfully, Deb Danforth, Secretary
