Entry Form Selecting the animals (from those you identified) to come to county fair (entry form is hardcopy).

2 HORSE PROJECT PRACTICES Practices begin May 2 nd, 6:30pm. Practices will be every Wednesday at this time until fair and are located at the Adair County Fairgrounds. BUCKET CALF Required, special ear tags for bucket/bottle calves are available at the Extension office ($1.50 each). Calves must be born between January 1 st - May 15 th, Her must have possession before calf is three weeks old. Exhibitor may identify 3 calves and show 2 at county fair. MARKET BROILERS Broiler chickens must be ordered from Nodaway Ag Center by May 4. Chick pick up day is June 5 or 6. BUCKET OF JUNK First come first serve! The Adair County Extension office has 2 leftover Buckets of Junk from last year. If you are interested, stop by the office and pick one up. First come, first serve until gone. DOG PROJECT CLASSES Practices began June 3rd, 6:00pm at the Adair County Fairgrounds. Practices continue each Sunday until County Fair. All 4-H livestock/animal exhibitors and Pride of Iowa contestants must wear a 4-H t-shirt or a white shirt with a 4-H emblem when competing at the Adair County Fair. 4-H ers are also encouraged (but not required) to wear a 4-H t-shirt when participating in conference judging, communication contest, and/or while participating in the premium auction. Orders will be available for pick-up on June 27th at the Adair County Extension Office. T-shirts can be picked up at the Extension office until July 16th. After 16th, t-shirts will need to be picked up at the Adair County Fairgrounds 4H/FFA office Adair County Fair, July 18-22! ADAIR COUNTY 4-H FAIR KICK OFF EVENT Thursday, July 12th from 5:00-7:00pm at the Adair County Fairgrounds, 4-H/FFA Center. Meal will be served at 5:00pm until gone. Free will donation. Fair King & Queen Candidates will be presented and live entertainment will be provided by 4-H members. Join us for a fun evening! Page 2 ADMISSION - The Adair County Fair Board will be charging gate admission all 5 days of the fair this year starting on Wednesday, July 18. Adults = $7/day or $30 for packet of 5 one-day tickets; Kids (ages 5 12) = $4/day or $15 for packet of 5 one-day tickets. The fair board provides a complimentary 5-day wristband to each 4-H and FFA county fair exhibitor. Discovery, Cloverbuds, Clover Kids, summer program participants, and FFA members without livestock or crops projects who exhibit only in the 4-H/FFA Center will also receive a complimentary 5-day wristband. Wristbands must be worn on the wrist and worn every day. No wristbands will be reissued. Wristbands will be available at the Adair County Extension until July 17th. WEDNESDAY NIGHT BBQ will be free with paid gate admission. See rates above. LIVESTOCK ENTRY All livestock (including rabbits) may enter the fairgrounds any time after 6am and must be stalled by 12pm on Wednesday, July 18. Judging in the 4-H/FFA Center is scheduled for Wednesday. Go to the following to check your club s judging time If you see a conflict with your exhibit building judging time and/or livestock entry, contact Emily at the Extension office ( or eaide@iastate.edu). Poultry must be entered between 8-10am on Thursday, July 19. Please go to the following link to see the entire county fair schedule Leaders will have entry cards for all static exhibits to be judged in the 4-H/FFA Center. Complete one entry card listing all your exhibits to be judged and bring it with you during your assigned judging time on July 19 th. See example on page 82 of the Adair County Fair book. No pre-entry is required. ADAIR COUNTY FAIR WAIVER The Adair County Fair Board is asking all exhibitors and volunteers involved with the county fair to read and sign a waiver. Please return the signed form to the Adair County Extension office before the Adair County Fair, July 18-22, Copies of the waiver have been provided in all club leader and FFA adviser packets. You can also find the form on our website Beef Quality Assurance Training Tuesday, June 26 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm Adair County Fairgrounds 4H/FFA Center Greenfield, Iowa This Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training will cover numerous best management practices and qualify producers for BQA certification. No cost to attend. Sponsored by: Adair County Extension & Adair County Cattlemen. Meal provided by the Adair County Cattlemen. 3 Page 3 County Fair Packets for Leaders Two meetings are scheduled to allow leaders and FFA Advisors to pick-up their county fair packets. Tuesday, June 5: 4:45pm and 6:30pm pick whichever meeting time that works good for you. Volunteer Leader Training for should be completed by July 1. It is a Requirement Iowa 4-H requires all 4-H leaders (organizational, assistant, and countywide project leaders, including Shooting Sports volunteers) to participate in 1 training each year. This year s training focuses on Youth Engagement Strengthens 4-H. Six club leaders and two project superintendents need to complete the volunteer training. Please do so as soon as possible. Instructions for completing online. Step 1: Access the pre-learning and supporting documents on the 4-H website under Volunteer Resources, Annual Training Resources ( volunteerresources). Review the three pre-learning resources prior to completing the online training. It will be beneficial to preview or print the three supporting documents as well. Step 2: Access the online annual training of Youth Engagement Strengthens 4-H via 4H Online, link below as well as step by step instructions. Open a web browser (use Firefox, Safari, or Chrome as IE does not always work) and type in: iowa.4honline.com Login to 4H Online using your family address and login information. Click Continue to Family. Find your name and click Edit on right side by your name. On the top of the page click on the trainings option. Click the Sign up for a training option on the upper right side of screen. View the trainings listed and click Sign up next to the annual training online version Leader Training (Youth Engagement Strengthens 4-H). Click Take the Course to get started. Step 3: Upon completion of the online training be sure to click to receive your certificate! By clicking on the certificate you have verified completion of the course, you can also print or save the certificate. A full week county fair pass will be provided to 4-H STATE FAIR CHANGES 4-H & Youth Programming 4-H & Youth Programming CLUB CHECKLIST As a Club: Distribute county fair information including fair books and entry forms following leader meetings on June 5. Study your fair book and review entry procedures. Have members explain the different divisions they have participated in to the club. Appoint a committee to create a group exhibit for the fair. Highlight a service project your club has completed or construct or make something to donate to the silent auction once it has been judged. Make a plan/appoint a committee to complete your Tub of Blooms project for the county fairgrounds. Make county fair assignments including a club booth decorating committee, pop stand workers, building hosts, and fairgrounds clean-up. Your club s 4-H Program Development fee printout will be included in your county fair packet. Make checks payable to Adair County Extension. Plan a pre-fair activity to help new families. Focus on mastery (i.e. practice conference judging, completing a write-up, livestock showing techniques). Take club photo for county fair display. Submit it electronically with list of members to eaide@iastate.edu Identify an item or package your club would like to give to the 4-H Booster Fund Silent Auction to be held at the county fair. Homemade or constructed items are welcome. All proceeds benefit Adair County 4H. Decide if and how your club can contribute to the July 12th 4-H County Fair Kick-Off sponsored by Extension and 4-H. Think kids games, easy working exhibits, face painting. Communication acts (vocal, instrumental, speaking) are needed for the evening entertainment. Call Emily at the Extension office and let her know if you can help out. Iowa State Fair ENTRIES DUE To show at the Iowa State Fair, 4-H ers must have completed 5 th 12 th grades. Livestock entries (beef, dairy cattle, dairy goat, meat goat, horse, sheep and swine) rabbit, dog and horticulture entries are due July 1st. Iowa State Fair Livestock Schedule & CHANGES! 4 Page 4 Swine Tagged for Adair County and Iowa State Fair Adair County 4-H and FFA members tagged 123 pigs as part of the countywide tagging. These pigs are now eligible to exhibit at the 2018 Adair County Fair. The county fair swine show is Thursday, July 19 th. Pigs will be entered at the county fair on Wednesday, July 18 th, 7:00 8:30 am. Sunday, July 22 - swine not sold to the packer are released between 6:30-7:30 am; swine barn cleaning follows at 7:30 a.m. The following twenty-one youth identified pigs: Ayden and Carter Goetz, Makinley Edwards, and Emma Lundy, Fontanelle; Belle Fagan, Cash, Cade and Madison Suhr, and Mallory Wheatley, Adair; Conner and Sara Beane, Stuart; Alissa Brownlee, Macksburg; Tucker (Sloth) Rohrig, Orient; Beau and Reagan Weinheimer, and Annika & Matt Nelson, Greenfield; Halee Wallace, Creston; and Lukas and Krista James, Massena; Gage Bulter, Guthrie Center. We welcome five 4th grade members to swine production and exhibition! Twenty-seven of the pigs tagged were also entered in the Lean Value Carcass contest sponsored by the Adair County Pork Producers. Final placing in the contest will be determined by lean carcass value not lean gain per day on test as pigs were not weighed during the tagging process. Carcass merit is determined using ultrasound. Makinley Edwards, Lukas James and Tucker (Sloth) Rohrig verified pigs with a special DNA ear tag making them eligible for the 2018 Iowa State Fair 4-H Swine Show. 4-H/FFA Rabbit & Cavy Project Workshop A Rabbit & Cavy Project Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, June 16 rd from 9:00am-12:00pm, at the Adair County Fairgrounds in Greenfield. This is a free event for all youth in 4-H and/or FFA. During the workshop, participants will gain tips on showmanship techniques, gather resource information and have the opportunity to bring their personal rabbits and/or cavies to consult with presenters. Rabbits can be tattooed onsite and Wolfe Rabbit Supply will be present with any supply needs. An additional Carrying Cage Workshop will be offered by Wolfe Rabbit Supply for youth to learn to build their own rabbit transportation carrier. There is a materials fee associated with this section of the workshop event (small to medium rabbit carriers cost $20 and large rabbit carriers cost $27.50). Material fees will be collected at the workshop and youth must be pre-registered for this section of the workshop event. Registration deadline is June 7 th to the Adair County Extension by calling Emily Ide, County Youth Coordinator, at or eaide@iastate.edu. When registering, please be sure to indicate whether your youth will be attending the Carrying Cage Workshop part of the program and what size of carrier you will need. ANIMAL PROJECT UPDATES Dog Project es will began Sunday, June 3, 6-7:30pm and continue every Sunday evening until county fair. es will be held in the grass area on the east side of the old 4-H building on the fairgrounds (or the improved Varied Industries building if it is raining). Remember to bring your dog s vaccination certificate for Rabies signed by a veterinarian to the first class, if you haven t already turned it into the Extension office. County fair 4-H dog superintendent, Daniella Noland, will be leading the classes. Release Time for County Fair Swine Any swine which were exhibited, but not selling as part of the Adair County Fair group to the packer, must stay on the grounds until release. Pigs returning home or to another location and locker pigs are eligible for release on Sunday, July 22 between 6:00 and 7:30am. Exhibitors are responsible for cleaning their pens immediately following release of their animals. Check out the swine project guidelines Livestock Judging Contest will be held Wednesday, July 18, 4:00pm at the Swine Show Arena. Registration at 3:30pm. Contest is for Adair County 4-H & FFA members and is also open to FFA livestock judging teams from surrounding counties. A special adult division is offered. A member in both 4-H & FFA must enter either 4-H or FFA, not both. Individuals or teams may enter. Maximum four members to a team, with top three scores comprising the team score. The leader or adviser, will register the team before the contest. Photos of each team will be taken at registration. Adair County Supreme Showman contest is open to all Senior (grades 9-12) 4-H and FFA members exhibiting an animal in the Beef, Horse, Meat Goat, Sheep, or Swine project areas. Contestants must participate in the following written test and showmanship classes. Written test- Wednesday, July 18, 1:00pm, 4-H/FFA Center Beef, Sheep, Meat goat, Swine-Thursday, July 19, 4:30pm, Outdoor Show Ring Horse- Friday, July 20, 8:00am, Horse Arena Arrangements will be made to allow for participation in the above schedule. Poultry Pullorum Typhoid Testing, by an authorized tester, will be done Saturday, July 7, 8:00-11:30 am on the fair grounds. All birds to be exhibited must be tested on July 8 except those entered in 1102 (market broilers), 1103 (market broilers), or 1112 (market broiler pen of 3). 5 June 2018 Members in Page 5 Action In preparation for the Adair County Fair, the Adair County Hot Shots 4H Club cleaned the leaves from the pen barn on the fairgrounds. This was a big job! Thank you Hot Shots! Building Superintendents have decided to change the layout of the 4-H/FFA Center for 2018 County Fair PEEWEE WORKSHOP New this year: PeeWee Open Showmanship Workshop and Show was held on Wednesday, June 30th at the Adair County Fairgrounds. This event was hosted by Adair County Extension and Adair County FFA. The afternoon workshop started with youth participants (ages K-4th grades) learning proper care, nutrition, exercise and showing techniques for beef, sheep, swine and goats. Each participant received their own show number and competed in a live show which was judged. Each youth was able to show one live animal. Congratulations to Ayden Goetz, who was awarded the Champion PeeWee Showmanship Award with Allegra Rectenbaugh as Reserve Champion PeeWee Showmanship winner. The evening ended with a light meal. A big thank you goes to the Adair County Pork Producers for donating and grilling pork patties for participants, family members, friends and volunteers. Another big thank you goes to the wonderful families who volunteered to bring livestock and time for the event: Rectenbaugh's, Hollidays, Stull s, Weinheimer's, and Day s. It was a wonderful time! Tub of Blooms at the County Fair Who: Each Adair County 4-H club What: Plant a Tub of Blooms for display at the county fair When: Deliver Tub of Blooms to fairgrounds anytime between Sunday, July 15, and Wednesday, July 18. How: Tubs for each 4-H club were furnished last year by Fair board member, Lori Herr, If your club is in need of a new tub please let the extension office know. Tubs measure 17 in diameter and are 7 1/2 deep. DO NOT DECORATE THE OUTSIDE OF THE TUB. Lori will have plastic signs with your club name to put in your Tub after you bring it to the fairgrounds. A simple form concerning the project will be ed to club leaders. Bring the form and photo of your Tub of Blooms to the Exhibit Building on judging day.
