A special county fair edition of the 4-H newsletter will be mailed to all 4-H families on July 8 th. Watch for it in your mail. 2 July 2013 ADAIR COUNTY EXTENSION 4-H NEWS Page 2 4-H to Host FARMER S MARKET Adair County 4-H and Adair County Extension Council will be hosting the Farmer s Market in Greenfield, Thursday, July 11 th. Hamburgers and pork patties (Adair County Cattlemen and Adair County Pork Producers will be grilling), baked beans, watermelon, bars and drink will be served from 5 7 p.m. Free will donations will be accepted with a $5 per meal suggestion. The proceeds will help support the Adair County 4-H and youth programs. Three great ways to help the 4-H program: Volunteer to work at the event by calling the Extension office. Offer to perform your talent on the stage. Attend as a family and eat supper. We thank you for your continued support! SUPPORT ADAIR COUNTY 4-H PROGRAMS Silent Auction The Silent Auction at the fair helps raise money to support the Adair County 4-H program. The money helps pay for scholarships to camps and conferences, awards and recognition materials, and college scholarships. We d like every 4-H club to support the Silent Auction by donating at least one item or package. Family or individual contributions are also welcome. It can be something you make (i.e. picnic table or bench), a service you are willing to provide (i.e. baking a pie, cleaning) or something you purchase. Notify our office by July 1st if you have an item to donate. Animal Project Update Pullorum Testing for Poultry All poultry exhibits must come from U. S. Pullorum- Typhoid clean or equivalent flocks, or have a negative Pullorum-Typhoid test within 90 days of the fair. Special testing is set for Saturday, July 6 th, 8 10:00 a.m. at the fairgrounds in Greenfield. All birds to be exhibited must be tested on July 6 th except those entered in Class 1102 (Broilers under 4 pounds), Class 1103 (Broilers over 4 pounds), and Class 1112 (Market Broiler Pen of 3). Clothing Selection You don t need to be signed up for the clothing project to compete in the clothing selection competition. Entries are due by July 1st. In addition to the traditional clothing selection division, the $15 challenge is available. (You can enter in both divisions) Special rules for the $15 challenge follow: Must be purchased new or used at a garage sale, consignment store, or resale shop (i.e. Country Consignments, Goodwill). Items selected at a free garage sale are eligible, but ask for a receipt. Cost of the entire outfit must be $15 or less, not including shoes, accessories or undergarments. Receipt(s) must be turned in with your entry form. You need to complete the special entry form that describes your outfit and turn it in by July 1st. Judging will be held Monday, July 15 th beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the 4-H/FFA Center. Each contestant will be assigned an individual conference judging time. All participants in the clothing event are expected to model at the fair on Thursday, July 18th at 7:00 p.m. COMMUNICATORS NEEDED Enter the communication division at the county fair as an individual, with a friend, or as a club group. Share something you have learned with an educational presentation or working exhibit. Show off your talent with a Share the Fun act. Seniors can practice writing and delivering a speech on the spot in extemporaneous speaking. Entries are due July 1st. We have a great publication 4H-850A I Have To Do What? that will help you organize a presentation. We are also in need of singers, dancers, jugglers, poetry readers, instrumentalists & all other types of performers for the Farmers Market on July 11 th. Call Donna at the Extension office to be part of the program. The top Share the Fun Club Act at the county fair will receive the Deb Stalter Memorial Share the Fun Award. The honor includes a $25 cash award. Fair Book Posted Online The fair book is posted at content/2013-adair-county-fair-bookselect-section

3 July 2013 ADAIR COUNTY EXTENSION 4-H NEWS Page 3 Community Service Opportunities SUMMER CAMP HELPERS STILL NEEDED Clover Kids Preview is set for Saturday, August 3 rd. We could use helpers to assist with the preview. You need to love working with kids and be going into at least the 7 th grade this fall. Call the Adair County Extension Office if you can help. Helpers are also needed for the Zoo-bilee Reading Adventure and Magic Money set for July 29-August 1 from 9:30-3:30 p.m. Both middle school and high school helpers are needed. YOUTH NEEDED ON FAIR BOARD Youth applicants age are being sought to serve on the Adair County Fair Board. It will allow youth to gain a better understanding of the details involved in hosting a fair while allowing them to interact with the Adair County Fair Board. They will be asked to share their perspective and ideas as they work along side board members to plan, prepare and host the Adair County Fair. VOLUNTEER AT STATE FAIR Volunteers are needed for prep and set-up dates (August 5-7), during the fair (August 8-18), and the day after (August 19). Senior 4-H Recognition All graduating seniors should have received a senior information form in the mail. Please complete and submit it with your graduation photo by July 1st. All graduating senior 4-H ers will be recognized and presented with a small gift during the opening ceremonies of the fair on Wednesday, July 17 th at 8:00 p.m. Please plan to be present. Have members explain the different divisions they have participated in to the club. Participate in the Clover Run as a club. Encourage all family members to enter, too. Approve payment of your club s Development fee. Review county fair assignments. Conduct club tour as pre-fair activity. Discuss good sportsmanship. Do role plays to model good sportsmanship in different situations. Turn into the Extension office by July 1st: County Fair entries Club photos Silent Auction item Senior Recognition Forms with a senior picture LEADER INFORMATION All community club leaders who have completed Winter 2013 Volunteer Training by July 15 th will receive a coupon for $12 off a 4-day pass ($22) to the Adair County Fair. Coupons must be redeemed at the Extension office. County Fair Queen Candidates The 2013 Adair County Fair Queen will be crowned on Wednesday, July 17 th during the opening ceremonies of the fair. We hope all young women, including 4-H alumni, who are between years old will sign up. Entry forms are available on the Adair County Extension Office website and are due by July 1st.
