3 A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT With the summer heat fully upon us, it s a good time to find activities in cooler places. Luckily for most AZQHA members, that s not a problem. I have just returned from the EMO Western States Championships at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas, where you are guaranteed 70 degrees year-round. The show itself was way up in participation with exhibitors traveling from all over the country. It was great to see so many people support this excellent event. June the YES Seminar was held in College Station, Texas. We had the honor of sending six youths, and I would like to congratulate Morgan Farrell and Alexis Tretschosk on becoming Youth National Directors. Events still to come this summer include the AQHA Youth World Championships in Oklahoma City Aug This year we are sending thirteen youth participants and 20 horses. I would like to wish all the exhibitors the best of luck. Also, August 25th in Sonoita there will be a Trail Challenge. I encourage our members to support and join in the fun. September the Arizona Fall Championship will be held at West World in Scottsdale. This year we will be adding NRCHA, NSBA, and IEA Scholarship classes. I look forward to seeing everyone there. The AZQHA Board of Directors have a few new faces this year. Nancy Gillett, Julie Hoefling, and Martin Vidal DMV are our newest board members, and I would like to thank them for their dedication and service. Welcome! We will be sending by mail information on how to donate to our Scholarship Program. I would encourage you to keep an eye out for the mailer and donate. This year, AZQHA will be matching all that is donated. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hard to believe that the AQHYA Youth World is here and our show year is half over all ready. Once again, I am proud to work on this issue that highlights our youth. Scholarship winners, YES attendees and World Show exhibitors. I hope you enjoy reading about our future leaders. I now know the future is bright for Arizona. Thank you to Alan Kaplan, Brad Barkemeyer and John Taylor for sharing your programs and families. Their stories, the ranch and their involvement with kids is inspiring. Also thank you to Scottsdale Western World for their continued support. The next issue will focus on the Fall Championship show and results from the Select World. I am sure it will be full of winners and their great stories. Please let me know if we can reserve an advertisement page in the next issue for you. Lolli Laurel Denton The Arizona Quarter Horse (928) barubarranch@gmail.com text That s all for now. 7 MOONSTRUCK ONE TIME Owned by Alan Kaplan and ridden by Brad Barkemeyer Moonstruck One Time is a 5-year-old gelding by One Time Pepto out of the High Brow Cat mare, Moonstruck Cat. Owned by Alan Kaplan, Moonstruck One Time and Brad Barkemeyer went down the fence to score a whopping 277 on June 15th at the NRCHA Derby in Paso Robles, CA. James as he is known to his friends, and Brad ended up with the second highest fence score and fourth overall in the Intermediate Open portion of the NRCHA Derby adding $3,654 to their total earnings of $78,937. Bought sight unseen as a yearling, Alan and Jennifer Kaplan purchased James on the recommendation of his then trainer, Corey Cushing. With only a photo, Alan knew, we have got to have that one. As a two-year-old, James and Corey started their training together ultimately being the Reserve Champion at the Snaffle Bit Futurity in With time off as a four-year-old, James came back at five and began his training with Brad. I was excited for the opportunity to train and show him because of his easy-going disposition, athletic ability and can-do attitude. He is Bryce, Brad and Mindy Barkemeyer I was excited for the opportunity to train and show him because of his easy-going disposition, athletic ability and can-do attitude. Brad Barkemeyer an extremely talented horse which gave me confidence knowing he could compete at a high level. But this story is not just about an incredible horse or a talented rider. This story is about a group of dedicated individuals on a ranch whose deep respect, admiration and love for this industry, their horses, and each other are seen day-in and day-out. Built in 1999, the Bella Vista Ranch, owned by the Kaplan family is a world-class training facility. When you walk through, kicking a little dust with your boots, you can t help to notice the top of the line equine facilities, the exquisite horses, and the all-around beauty of the grounds. But what is more impressive are the people who are there and the difference they are making. All managed by barn manager, John Taylor, it is here, Mindy and Brad Barkemeyer of Barkemeyer Performance Horses train James and others alike in roping, cutting and cow horse and versa- ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

8 MOONSTRUCK ONE TIME (Continued) tility ranch competitions. And it is here, they all work together making a difference for one another and for those who come to train and watch. As Alan Kaplan explained, it is not about the win, but about the lasting memories When I sat down with Brad and asked him about his program, he reminded me that being true to yourself and your training is key. As he put it, This sport is a roller coaster of emotions that requires stamina, persistence, disciple, and patience. It is so easy to feel defeated letting brief moments cause self-doubt. Wondering if there was any doubt when he took James down the fence at the Derby, he expressed, It was one of those runs that I felt like things were in slow motion even though it was happening at a very high rate of speed. I tried to be patient going into the first turn thinking about the conversations I had with my peers in the warm-up pen about sticking to the fundamentals. After the first turn, the rest of the run seemed to fall into place. Father and son getting ready for the show It was clear to me the Derby and James were a high moment that day, but after talking more, I realized Brad s true appreciation fell to those who surrounded him. Along with his deep faith and love from his wife and children, he accredited the Kaplans and John Taylor for success and positive impact. they are consistently supportive of the industry, and it s an honor to be surrounded by people who give so unselfishly. I am blessed having a friend in John, his passion for the sport, horses, competitors and especially the youth is truly inspiring. We are thankful to have so many exceptional clients that have a positive impact on our program. Collin Kaplin and John Taylor As our conversation ended and I headed out, I thought Brad is right; being true to yourself and your training is essential but having impactful people around you makes all the difference. Whether you win or take second, having the opportunity to show again is rewarding and knowing someone will be there no matter what; well, that is the real blessing. 6 ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

She is extremely honored to have been chosen as a recipient of the scholarship and would like to thank the committee and Dr. Joni Hegel for the opportunity. Quinn would like to use her scholarship to attend Texas A&M or Auburn and major in philosophy and business with the hopes of going to law school and becoming and entertainment attorney. Kate Buchanan KATE BUCHANAN Kate Buchanan has been riding since she was 5 years old. She started out participating in Pony Club and eventing until she moved to Arizona when she was 10 years old. She fell in love with reining and started training with Matt Mills. Since her start in reining, she has won several championships including Cactus Classic Maturity and Youth, High Roller Youth, Sun Circuit Youth, AQHA Novice Youth, and a Bronze finish at the AQHYA World. She also competes in the Ranch Riding, Roping and Working Cowhorse. She made the finals at the AzQHYA in both Ranch Riding and Youth Boxing. She loves horses and has her sights set on competing at the collegiate level and hopefully joining an NCAA equestrian team. QUINN EISENFELD Quinn Eisenfeld is an 8th Grader at Cicero Prepatory Academy, a Great Hearts School. She is actively involved in school activities serving as a mentor and tutor to students, as well as recently being nominated by her teachers and administration to be a Centurion leader (a voice of the students in school decision making). Quinn started riding horses when she was 4 years old and has been actively involved in showing Arabian horses for Quinn Eisenfeld the majority of that time. However, she recently fell in love with quarter horses and has officially made KAYLEE HAMM Hello my name is Kaylee Hamm. I am 17 years old and a senior at Cactus Shadows High School in Cave Creek. I have been a member of AzQHYA for eight years. Being a part of AzQHYA has allowed me to be myself and be able to be passionate about what I love. This organization has given me many opportunities to Kaylee Hamm meet many youth and others in the Quarter Horse world and beyond. One of these opportunities included going to the AQHYA YES seminar, which was a great experience, because I got to meet other youth members from all over the country and a few from out of the United States. In high school, I have been the DECA Business and Marketing club s president for the last two years. Being involved in both AQHA and DECA has given me more confidence and leadership skills which will last a lifetime. Outside the show ring, there are endless opportunities to get involved in AzQHYA or even AQHA. Volunteering is an opportunity that I have always tried to be a part of, whether it was donating food to our local food bank, laminating number at the Sun Circuit show, or selling raffle tickets. During these last two years in youth, I will continue volunteering both with AzQHYA and through my high school and college. Last year, I was awarded one of the AzQHYA scholarships for my hard work, community service, and involvement in my community. I truly appreciate the scholarship and everything that AzQHYA does for its youth and the horse industry. After I age out of youth, I want to take any chance that I can to get involved with my community and with AzQHA. I believe that we should all try to pay it forward and get involved in whatever capacity we can. ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

16 2018 AzQHA SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS (Continued) SHANDIIN FARRELL My name is Shandiin Farrell I am 19 years old from Cow Springs, Arizona. I have been a member of the Arizona Quarter Horse Association for the past 15 years and served as an AQHYA regional director! I am currently a sophomore at New Mexico State University studying Agricultural Extension and Education. I am also a member of the NMSU Rodeo Team and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. I grew up with the Arizona Quarter Horse Association and it allowed me to come out of my shell and prepared me to take on various leadership positions on my team, sorority, and at Shandiin Farrell the AQHYA national level! This year I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship from AzQHA! I d like to express my thanks to the AzQHA board members and all of the gracious donors for not only a scholarship but for all the opportunities that they have provided me over the years! ARIEL OLVEY As a member of the AZQHA I have been a part of amazing programs like the Y.E.S Conference and Youth Horse Heritage program. My heritage horse is named, Killian s Doc Pep, or Pepper for short. Pepper came for the Killian s ranch in Arizona. I grew Ariel Olvey up around animals, horses mostly. I ve been riding American Quarter Horses since I was very young. The role model that made me pursue the veterinary field was my grandfather. He was an outstanding veterinarian for over 75 years. I attended Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center (AAEC) for high school. I graduated high school with honors and a certificate of merit in veterinary science. I m graduating from Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) spring of 2018 with an Associate s degree and honors in Phi Theta Kappa. Going on to the University of Arizona, I am enrolled in veterinary science as my major and I plan to be a part of the equestrian team at the university. I was awarded a 1000-dollar scholarship fall of last year that helps pay for my tuition this semester. I am very thankful for the Joe and Suzy Jean scholarship program, sponsored by Dr. Joni Hegel. AZQHA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS By Brendan Brown AzQHA has developed an innovative scholarship program designed to encourage membership and reward excellence. The ASCENT program awards scholarships to Interscholastic Equestrian Association competitors at a competition during the Arizona Fall Championship Show. In order to qualify for these awards, they must be AzQHYA members and show at two of the three No Bling Shows. This program has added many new youth members, as well as competitors and spectators at our shows. Last year, with the generous support of Dr Joni Hegel, our Association was able to award five $1,000 scholarships to Arizona Quarter Horse Youth Association members. These were awarded based on an interview, AzQHYA participation and community service. At last year s Fall Championship Show, twenty-three youth members interviewed for these scholarships. I was one of the panel who conducted the interviews and I can tell you that we have an impressive group of young people involved in our organization. Their enthusiasm and optimism was contagious, and I was honored to have been a part of the process. With your help, we can continue to expand this program. This year, we would like to double the number of scholarships awarded. The need is great, the kids are amazing, and donations are a well-spent investment in the future. 100% of the funds are available for scholarships. Scholarships may be used at any accredited university or trade school. AzQHA has the flexibility to make changes as the program evolves. Available to any AzQHYA member. Encourages participation in Arizona equine events. Creates educational opportunities for our youth. AzQHA matches dollars for dollar your donation. 14 ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

17 MEET THE ASSISTANTS RILEY PAGE Meet Arizona native Riley Page, Assistant Trainer at Barkemeyer Performance Horses. Though Riley did not grow up in the equine industry, he found his passion for reined cow and rope horses in his early teens. I got a job on a dude ranch for the summer when I was 13, says Page. I had ridden a little bit before that, didn t know much. I had always liked horses. After that summer, all I wanted to do was ride horses. I quit all the sports I was playing and started working towards being a horse trainer. Dedicated to his dream, Riley continued to work at that dude ranch and for other local trainers throughout high school. He went on to receive a degree in Horse Training and Management from Lamar Community College [Colorado]. He went on to work under respected trainers across the Western states to refine his skill, before returning back to Arizona. Riley particularly enjoys starting two-year olds and young rope horses. He says, I really like to see young horse progress. They go from knowing nothing to being able to ride them and take them to their full potential. I take a lot of pride in making good horses. When not in the arena, Riley can be found in his leather shop, a craft he started in college. He is known in the Rio Verde area for building quality working equipment or repairing tack for local trainers as RP Custom Leatherwork. 24 BRIDGET GROBOSKY Bridget Grobosky is still grinning from all the winning at the 2018 AQHA Level 1 West Championships. Accidental Zipper, aka, Red is no stranger to the show ring at a young twenty years old, but after three years with Bridget he carried her to two Championships and one Reserve in Las Vegas at South Point Casino. Their story is one that makes most everyone smile from head to toe. Bridget has been riding since she was seven years old, showing both Paint and Quarter Horses. After her move to Arizona six years ago, she teamed up with Tom and Kelly Duke of TK Performance horses. This was her second time attending the Level 1 Championships, Bridget and Red knew they were ready for the challenge. It also helped that we were able to practice each pattern beforehand. They were released early and that really helped me get a sense on how to lay out each pattern, Bridget explained. Her first class was the Rookie Amateur Hunter Under Saddle. The plan was to use this class primarily as a warm up for the Amateur Equitation, the main class Bridget wished to do well in. I didn t have particularly high expectations in this class, I just remember still sitting in the line- up as the fifth-place horse was called out I thought, Wow, forth, not too bad. I kept getting more emotional as each place was being called out. By the time Bridget got the trophy in her hands the tears were really flowing. Little did she know that more tears of happiness were yet to come. A little more than two hours later, Bridget and Accidental Zipper were called out as Level 1 Champions in their favorite class, Hunt Seat Equitation. When I got to do my victory lap, I felt like I was riding the best horse in the world. That feeling is one I ll treasure for the rest of my life. The show was not over for Bridget and Red, they wrapped it up with Level 1 Trail. It was a huge win to hear their score of 219 called out after their run. Bridget explained, Even though it was the last day, Red put in a great run for me. The whole pattern just flowed, and we ended up Reserve Champions. It wasn t quite as exciting in the line- 22 ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

25 up, because you can predict where you ll be after hearing all the scores. All told they had quite the experience in Vegas, placing fifth in Rookie Horsemanship and finalists in Level 1 Western Riding. My parents were able to be with me the whole show. I got to show alongside my twin sister, Brook, who also shows the all-around events with her horse Hes Gettin Real. While winning was certainly a highlight, it was also amazing to be a cheerleader for Brook and Real who were Reserve Champions in the Rookie Equitation and placed in all their classes. Bridget says that Red is one of the coolest horses she has ever ridden. It has been a real privilege for her to show him as he loves being in the spotlight and center of attention. Bridget can trust him to always give his all. He s becoming a bit of an old man, but he certainly proved the old horses can still have it. I m so happy it all came together at this show for us. I know he felt pretty good about himself with those neck ribbons too. I could not have done any of this without my trainers Kelly Penrod and Tom Duke, my boyfriend Aaron, Georgette and Jessica Sterusky, and my family AQHA LEVEL 1 CHAMPIONSHIPS AzQHA would like to congratulate all who traveled to Las Vegas to show in the Level 1 Championship West. I ve been at Bob s just over a year. I actually went to Bob s to buy a saddle and ended up working for them! This was my first show in my new Bob s Custom Saddle; I felt like it was my good luck charm during the whole show. Because of her work schedule, Bridget stays mostly in Arizona to show. They are on track to win AzQHA All Around this year and she really has her sights set on the prize. Bridget and Red have been Reserve the past two years, here s hoping this is their year!! 26 AzQHYA YOUTH IN EXCELLENCE SEMINAR YES By Alex Tretschok This year, the AQHA Youth Excellence Seminar was hosted in College Station, Texas. AzQHA was well represented at this YES with 7 members attending including myself (Alexis Tretschok), Alex Shulman, Catherine Miller, Lexy Santos, Kaitlyn Fisher and Morgan Farrell! Our youth traveled with our wonderful youth advisor, Sammy Roberts. This seminar was a great experience for all our youth and brought a lot of new, exciting and inspirational experiences for all. The theme for this year was reach out and amplify and centered around amplifying AQHA s message. Two speakers, Clint Swindall and Dr. Tobin Redwine gave inspirational talks and encouraged the youth to reach out in their own ways. We had the amazing opportunity to also help with a community service project, Books and A Blanket as well and helped to make a difference in the community of College Station, Texas. This year YES fell at the same time as the AQHYA Youth World Cup where riders from 19 countries across the world came to compete. Attendees at this seminar had the opportunity to meet many of the teams from the different countries and Alexis Tretschok and Lexie Santos even watch an epic lip sync battle between all the teams. The AzQHA Youth Board met other youth from around the world and were able to take place in many exciting and inspirational activities throughout the conference. Our own members, Morgan Farrell and myself were also elected to represent our region as national directors in the upcoming year! In addition to these moments at the conference, the AzQHA Youth Board was also able to bond and create relationships with each other. Personally, I think this was one of the best parts of the seminar and I am excited to work with everyone on the board this year. Can t wait to experience this amazing seminar again next year! Alexis is the secretary of the Youth Board for AzQHA for She is 16 years old and lives in Tucson, AZ. Alexis shows the all-around Alexis Tretschok, Catherine Miller, Morgan Farrell, Kaitlyn Fisher, Alex Shulman and Niko Nemanic with her horse Finn. Currently, she is also a national director for AQHYA and represents Region 7. Alexis wants to reach out to members in Region 7 and Arizona especially to bring the horse community together and increase involvement in AQHYA. When Alexis is not showing or riding her horse, she enjoys baking and to read. YES By Morgan Farrell At the 2018 Youth Excellence Seminar in College Station Texas, AQHYA members from all the world gathered to share their common passion, the American Quarter Horse. We kicked off the first night by the annual YES dance. It was a great time to meet people from across the country and have some fun. Members who attended the seminar had the opportunity to take part in breakout sessions that helped the members amplify their goals, better the friendships they hold with people, and create an outlook about AQHA internationally. Alexis Tretschok, Morgan Farrell and Lexie Santos We heard from two keynote speakers, Clint Swindall and Tobin Redwine, who taught us some valuable lessons. 24 ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

27 AQHYA Directors We learned to always have a positive outlook on life and to always have something good to say. We also had the opportunity to sit in on the Opening Ceremonies of the 2018 Youth World Cup, where we saw 18 other countries make their appearance before preparing to compete. Throughout the seminar we had the chance to meet the YWC competitors during a meet and greet and a lip sync battle. I had the chance to get to know the team from Sweden! It was such a great experience to learn about AQHYA outside of the United States. On the last day, we took part in the Books and Blanket project hosted by the Community Service Committee. All YES attendees were encouraged to bring elementary level books to donate to the cause. About five books and a blanket would be donated to a child in need. During the seminar we were able to hear from the candidates campaigning for regional director and national officer positions. It was important for us to learn their platforms, so we could decide who we wanted to lead our association. The region directors and national officers play a key role in the youth association by reaching out to members worldwide, working with AQHA, and lobbying at Capitol Hill. Alexis Tretschok and I were elected to be the Region 7 Directors. YES is a great way for members to learn the ins and outs of the American Quarter Horse Association. It s a chance for them learn about the different programs within the association, take part in leadership roles, and develop valuable skills they will need tin their future. Morgan Farrell, from Mesa, Arizona has been a member of AzQHYA for the last sixteen years. She shows in the speed events and has gotten more involved in the leadership side of AQHYA. Morgan is currently the AzQHYA Vice President and is serving her second term as AQHYA Region 7 Director. She has made it a top priority to help set the foundation for the members futures. Her goal is to provide the resources and opportunities members need to be successful. I want to inspire of the youth to try new things and put themselves out there. I want to reach out to them through youth activities and meetings, social media platforms, and communication. I am very excited for this year with the rest of the leadership team. YES Alexandra Shulman This year I attended the Youth Excellence Seminar put on by the AQHYA. It was held in College Station, Texas because the Youth World Cup ended up being there too! There were riders from 19 different countries there! This was my first YES convention and I was definitely pleasantly surprised at how fun it was! We got to tour the Texas A&M equestrian center and talk to past students about their time at the school. We also learned new things about the American Quarter Horse and how it impacts the rest of the world. I met so many new people and made a ton of new friends! Everyone there is insanely nice. We got to listen to many guest speakers who encouraged us to amplify our goals and to rise above mediocrity. If you are even considering going to the YES convention next year I highly recommend going, it is such a fun experience. Oh, yea and, the food is good too ;) I m Alexandra Shulman (a short, curly headed clumsy girl) and I am a reporter this year for the AzQHYA! I am 17 years old and live in Tucson, Arizona. I will be a senior this year at Sabino High School. I m extremely excited to represent Team Arizona in the speed events at the Youth World s Show In Oklahoma City this year! I own two all American quarter horses that I ride and take care of everyday (Fendi and Freedom). I am honored to be a part of the board this year and can t wait to see what this year hold for team AZ! ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

However, exhibitors, family and friends seemed unanimous in the feeling that the show was fun, the classes were great, and the staff went out of their way to be helpful. We love the donut cart, was frequently exclaimed each morning as free coffee and donuts were circulated around the barns and arenas. The expansive WestWorld facilities in Scottsdale easily accommodated the increased numbers. As many as 8 arenas saw classes in a day, and an additional half dozen were available for warm-up. The increase in entries was seen just about everywhere. The Trail pen saw huge numbers all week. A whopping 133 L2 & L3 Senior horses and another 44 Juniors navigated the Don Lehman course. On the Amateur side, 69 Select and 45 Amateurs showed off their precision and timing. Level 1 Junior, Senior and Amateur Trail numbers were also very strong, and there was a high percentage of cross entering with NSBA across all divisions. Western Riding is another class that saw Golden Cowboy Phillip Ralls and Call Me Mitch phenomenal entries. The Senior division had 73 horses on the pattern in L2 & L3 and another 49 in the L1. Junior and Amateur numbers edged up over last year as well. Ranch Riding, VRH Ranch Trail and Ranch on the Rail classes also showed their continued popularity with extremely large class numbers. The quality of the competition was top notch, yet the camaraderie around the arena was convivial. Sun Circuit has always drawn big numbers in Reining. This year the spins and slides were flying almost continuously in the North Hall. The Junior division showed 62 entries, while Senior showed 79 between L2 & L3. Sun Circuit hosted the NSBA Riders Cup on March 6 & 7. A total purse of $75,000 was awarded, along with 29 beautiful silver cup trophies and NSBA medals. The annual event is awarded money in Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Trail, Western Riding, Showmanship, Western Horsemanship, and Hunt Seat Equitation events. 31 trophy cups were proudly displayed all over the barns at WestWorld after the event. Brody Galyean rode Cool Poco Dot in the All Age Limited Non Pro Western Pleasure to score the top marks in a field of twelve. His giant smile reflected brilliantly in the large Rider s Cup trophy as he rode out of the arena knowing he earned $1, Keeping it in the family, Kristin Galyean won the Non Pro Western Pleasure and a check for $1, riding VS Lady in Red. The pair also took the top spots in Non Pro Western Riding and Junior Western Riding, earning an additional $3,257. Tina Volmer was delighted to find herself in the award presentations twice riding Beter Late Than Never. Tina won the All Ages Limited Non Pro Hunter Under Saddle and received $1, She followed up that win by claiming a $2,271 prize in the Non Pro Hun Seat Equitation. Thirteen showed in a tightly matched Senior Trail. When the scores were all tallied, it was Jason Martin s ride on Heza Radical Zip, owned by Bonnie Sheren who topped the cards for $1,557. The pair switched gears and also won the trophy for Senior Western Riding, earning $1,794. Select Trail had 13 entries. Joanne Garnett received high marks for the day and added $1,217 to her earnings. At the conclusion of the Rider s Cup, an Exhibitor Party sponsored by Suzy Johns served up great food and libations to a large crowd. The evening s entertainment switched gears dramatically as the NSBA brought Donkey Races to Sun Circuit. 10 teams rode in 5 heats. Hilarity ensued when some of the finest equestrians on the planet discovered their skills were no match for a bunch of recalcitrant donkeys who seemed to truly enjoy dumping their riders in the dirt. The Smart Boons Fence Challenge is always a crowd-pleasing spectacle of equine athleticism. Smart Boons owners, Eric and Wendy Dunn added $20,000 to the pot and 100% of the entry fees were added back. Twenty of the top cow horses in the nation and their riders put on a fantastic show for the enthusiastic crowd. The energy of the event was contagious as spectators whooped and hollered with each turn of the cow. Scores were held to the end, so the excitement continued to build. Corey Cushing was Emcee for the evening, interviewing each breathless rider after their performance. After several heart thumping runs, Phil Ralls loped in on the flashy roan stallion, Call Me Mitch, owned by Estelle Roitblatt. The pair dominated their cow, diving into the stops, and turning with ease. It was clear they were going to be tough to beat. The crowd also cheered wildly for BJ Avila who was fast and fearless on Dera Cat owned by Rainlynn LLC. Cushing turned over his microphone and hopped aboard Sonita Lena Rey owned by Sheri Jamieson. They too turned in an exciting performance. All 20 exhibitors returned to the arena for scores and awards. Cushing s run scored a 151, settling them into 3rd place. That earned a check for $3,825. Avila marked a 153 winning a check for $5,100. But it was Ralls and Mitch who edged out the pack with a 154, winning them a check for $6,375 and a beautiful custom Preston Williams Hardware trophy buckle. The pair combined that score with points earned in cutting, steer stopping and cow horse to claim the Golden Cowboy Award and an additional $2,250. Stewards Drake Johnson and Bob Kail Nancy Gillett and her daughter Ellen Dickson were the winners of the day! The Cinch Timed Event Challenge Roping has become a favorite event at Sun Circuit. Andrew Sharp rode Two Jack Benito Bar to take the Open heading with a payout of $1,470. Zane Bruce and Bar B picked up the second hole for $1,102. Then Zane came back in the heeling to win it for an additional $1,623. Dakota Kirchenschlager had two Armenia Quarter Horses mounts in the heeling and placed 2nd and 3rd for $2,244, On the Non Pro side, Garrett Hershberger rode Mom s Hail Cat to have the fastest heading score to win $1,687. Ropers also had a shot at cash in the Sun Circuit Roping Futurity. Clay Logan rode Bets Gin to take the Championship in the Heading, winning $3,600 and a Bob s Custom Saddle. On the Heeling side, it was JD Yates aboard DT Shine Blue Brandy who put together the best 3 goes to earn $3,654 and a Bob s Custom Saddle. Rogers Heaven Sent Ranch sponsored the Junior and Senior Bridle Spectaculars again this year which combine scores from cutting and cow horse. $2,500 was added to both divisions, with $1,250 going to the champion. The Junior Spectacular went to Dotted Lights with Tucker Clark aboard, while Smoking Red Pepper and Shadd Parkinson had the highest total score in the Senior. The Amateurs had their own Spectaculars. Lindsey Marie James received the highest combined score in cutting and cow horse to win $500, and Becky Stockett racked up the points in cutting and boxing to win $500. Sun circuit offered a full slate of Versatility Ranch Horse classes during the first weekend for both AQHA and All Breed. The classes enjoyed very enthusiastic participation with large numbers, especially among amateurs. A Scottsdale Performance Saddle was awarded to the All Breed Amateur Champion Dana Avila, while Bob Grant won the saddle for VRH All Breed Open. Pam Stubbs high jumping. Exhibitors didn t always have to place first in a class to be a winner at Sun Circuit. Over $55,000 in give aways kept the fun and excitement going from start to finish. AzQHA president Michelle Pearson and Dale Litton of the Prize Patrol relentlessly crisscrossed the WestWorld grounds ensuring everyone, at every level and discipline, had a shot at winning something. Give aways came in many forms. The Word of the Day netted savvy exhibitors gift certificates from vendors, buckets of supplements and even jewelry. Being in the right place at the right time with the right trivia answer rewarded numerous people with gift certificates for hats, boots and more. The most talked about give aways involved the fun challenges that tested exhibitor skills not often seen at a horse show: bareback mounting for youth halter, back, turn and two-point for equitation, a long trot race in ranch riding, a boot scramble while leading your horse, relay races and more entertained everyone. The infamous bouncy horses returned, Clark Weaver and Lillys Vaquero 30 ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

33 proving once again that Reiners and cow horse riders just aren t that good at bouncing across the arena. The Mimosa Jump Off Challenge was eagerly anticipated by the hunters. Some of them certainly practiced after last year. Riders cantered over a fence holding a flute of champagne and OJ. The one with most left in their glass took home a 50 TV. Two new challenges debuted this year. The Sun Circuit s Got Talent turned the mike over to intrepid singers during the Seven Bar Lunch Party. Marcella Rierson wowed the crowd and won herself a $1,200 custom silver headstall. Playing up Scottsdale s perfect weather, the I Left This To Come To Sun Circuit Challenge encouraged exhibitors and their families to post their worst weather from back home on Facebook. Many truly nasty winter weather stories were shared. A team of Arizona judges rated them for the biggest yuck factor. Tracy Ingraham left 29 below zero with wind and snow to enjoy the show. If that wasn t winning enough, she also was treated to a $1,500 Cavalia Odysseo Prize Pack including 4 VIP tickets and limo ride. A show this size is not only about fun and prizes. A great deal of effort and planning goes into the logistics to make it run smoothly. AzQHA is determined to keep Sun Circuit and the AZ Fall Championship on the leading edge of show technology. To that end, a new software system was in use for scribing, tabulating and transmitting data. Scribes carried tablets which communicated with the announcer and show office. Gate people could verify entries, add or scratch easily. The system enabled quick tabulation and results announcements which moved the schedule along well. Huls Garrell Williams and Carlee was frank about the roll out, Overall, it was a good first step. I think it worked well in many ways. He conceded, We had a few glitches at the end and there were some things that we had to reconfigure. We are working hard to refine the system so that we can deliver a great experience to exhibitors. Huls anticipates that the improvements will be ready for the Fall Show. A proven formula for success combined with a determination to constantly improve ensures Sun Circuit will remain one of those shows around which everyone plans their annual show calendar. For 2019, the show will run March You can be certain there will be even more events than ever. ARTICLE BY KRISTEN SPINNING PHOTOS BY KRIS SPINNING ot the winning team, but they didn t care. Shadd feels like the future of the shows in Arizona lies in offering classes and fun stuff for everyone. The No Bling shows have seen huge growth in the All-Breed classes. The new Show Dough incentive has also been highly successful in getting new participants and members. Shadd and his wife McKenzie have two daughters, Gracie and Hadley; eight and three years old. CATHERINE MILLER HI! I M A NEW AZQHYA BOARD MEMBER, AND I M A REPORTER FOR THE AZQHA QUARTERLY MAGAZINE! I go to a charter high school that has four horses. Along with my amazing horsemanship instructor and my fellow Equine Club members, we watch and volunteer at dozens of shows to expand our knowledge. Our love of the Quarter Horse has allowed us to fundraise enough money to go to NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity in Ft. Worth and watch our favorite event! I have always loved horses, but I have become much more involved in the past two years. I hope to continue expanding my experiences until I graduate high school in two years. I love learning about anything to do with horses, and I happily welcome any new knowledge! 34 ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)

38 THIS N THAT GARRELL WILLIAMS AND SPARKS ON THE FENCE Garrell and Carlee wowed the NRCHA Derby when they were named NRCHA Non-Pro Limited Spectacular. Sparks On The Fence is a daughter of Smart Boons, was in the lead when they went in for the cow portion of the Limited Derby. She could feel the nerves as she rode Sparks On The Fence into the arena with the lead for the Non-Pro Limited cow work in the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Derby. After holding a tough cow their score of was announced. With the 213/herd, and 212.5/rein their total was 644, earning a check of $2,453 for first place. With the $288 they won during the go-rounds, Sparks On The Fence now has total earnings of more than $31,000. Garrell now has over $27,000 in NRCHA earnings. She showed me what it s like to trust a horse and to give 100 percent back to that horse. She is so honest, Williams said. She is always there for me, in competition and at home. She s just my best friend. She wants to be with me as much as I want to be with her, and it s a relationship with an animal unlike any I ve ever had. As far as Garrell is concerned, Carlee will be with their family forever. 36 ARIZONA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION (623)
