The Falcons will send 12 members to the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on May in Des Moines, Iowa. The two-day meet, one of four such regional competitions, will determine which athletes will travel to next month's national championships. Senior Olivia Korte and freshman Sara Neubauer will both compete in the shot put and discus throw, while sophomore Kirk Devine will compete in the discus and hammer throws. In addition, senior Casey Bayne and freshman Katie Weber will compete in the javelin, while freshman Dan Paladino will join Devine in the hammer throw rotation. (Senior Matt Schwandt qualified for the regional meet in the javelin, but will not compete due to injury). FROM THE POLE: Freshman Nick Frawley and Melissa Beerse will compete in the pole vault at the regional meet. Frawley, who qualified with a MWC championship performance, is currently ranked 11th in the NCAA with the fourth-best vault in the Midwest region. Beerse, who set an Academy record with her top qualifying performance, is ranked 12th in the region. ON YOU MARK, GET SET, GO!: Four Falcons will have to wait for a starting gun at the regional meet, as juniors Travis Picou (200-meter dash) and Kevin Hawkins (800-meter run) join sophomores Kellen Curry (110-meter hurdles) and Sean Houseworth (5000-meter run) as Air Force's representatives on the track. A MULTITUDE OF MULTIS: Senior Brian Walsh claimed his second conference multi-event championship in as many years, as he won the decathlon with 7,321 points. Walsh's point total, just 13 points shy of his career best, is the third-best outing ever at the MWC Championships. Walsh becomes the Falcons' first decathlon champion of the MWC era and the first overall since 1997, when former Air Force great Marcus Nichols claimed his title at the WAC meet. WELCOME BACK: Senior Matt Schwandt, who only recently returned from an injury, posted a season-best distance of 207'2" to win the javelin by nearly five feet. With that throw, Schwandt claimed his third all-conference honor in as many years and became the Falcons' first men's javelin champion since 2003 (Tim Fritz). Ironically, after finishing as the runnerup as a sophomore (210'11") and junior (212'9"), it was his shortest conference throw (207'2") that proved to be the biggest. ONE-THREE-FIVE: With a time of 30:50.98, sophomore Sean Houseworth became the second Falcon in as many years to win the 10,000-meter run at the conference meet. Classmate Joe Curran joined Houseworth with all-conference accolades, as he finished third with a time of 31: Fellow sophomore Parker Cowles clocked a time of to place fifth. GOING OUT ON TOP: With a career-best 177'3", senior Olivia Korte set a new Academy record as she won her first conference title in the discus. Topping her old program standard by nearly two feet, Korte also set a new MWC Championship meet record, edging out (CSU) Loree Smith's 2001 record of 177'1". Korte led the Falcons to a one-two finish, as freshman Sara Neubauer finished second with a career-best mark of 160'11", which is the second-best throw in Air Force history. HE'S AT IT AGAIN: Junior Kevin Hawkins crossed the finish line of the 800-meter run in 1:50.66 to earn his second career conference title. Hawkins, who also won the 800-meter title at the indoor meet in February, became the Falcons' first outdoor champion in this event since 1994 (Jeff Kuzma) and only the second in Academy history. Classmate Calvin Glass bolstered the Falcons' point total with a sixth-place time of 1: OUTDOOR HIGHLIGHTS AND HONORS --Air Force men win Military Classic: women second --Olivia Korte (March 21) and Sara Neubauer (May 4) named Mountain West Conference Athletes of the Week --Brian Walsh (decathlon), Matt Schwandt (javelin), Kevin Hawkins (800), Sean Houseworth (10k), Nick Frawley (pole vault) and Olivia Korte (discus) earn MWC titles RAISING THE BAR: Clearing 17'5½", freshman Nick Frawley claimed his first conference title. As the only non-byu vaulter to finish within the top five, Frawley out-distanced himself from the field by four inches. That mark, which is a career-best by over a foot, is the fourth-best height in Academy history and the best height of the season by anyone in the Mountain West Conference. Frawley is the Falcons' first pole vault champion since Paul Gensic won it as a freshman in ON DECK: Any athlete that finishes within the top five of this weekend's regional meet will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif. Senior Brian Walsh is already slated to make an appearance at the national meet, as he is ranked eighth in the country in the decathlon (which is not contested at the regional level).

Paladino improved his Freshman Class Record of 189'9" to place seventh, while Devine increased his Sophomore Class Record of 186'9" to take eighth. Paladino is now tied for the fourth-best distance in Academy history, while Devine remains in eighth but is now just two inches shy of the seventh spot. UP AND RUNNING: Sophomore Kellen Curry was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles at the MWC Championships, while junior Travis Picou was the runner-up in the 200-meter. (In that race, he and senior Nick Luina were the only two sprinters in the top seven that were not a member of the TCU squad.) In addition to his finish in the 200-meter dash, Picou also earned a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash, while Curry added fifth-place points. In addition, Luina, Curry and Picou teamed up with junior John Payne for a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Sophomore Kirk Devine added points to the Falcons' cause at the MWC Championships, while moving up the program's all-time standings at the same time. Tossing a discus distance of 176'6", Devine finished fourth in the event. That mark, which is a career-best throw by over six feet and the fifth-best time in Academy history, displaced the former Sophomore Class Record that had stood since ONE IN ONE OUT: With a sixth-place decathlon total of 6,334 points, sophomore Skylar Morgan moved into 10th on the Academy's all-time list effectively bumping teammate Matt Gensic from that perch by seven points. STEPPING UP: Freshman Dan Paladino recorded a NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark of 188'4" in the hammer throw to win that event at the Air Force Twilight Invitational. Improving his personal-best standard by nearly five feet, Paladino rewrote the Freshman Class record and moved from eighth to fifth on the Academy's all-time list. SPEED-RACERS: At the Twilight Meet, the 4x100-meter relay team of Nick Luina, Travis Picou, John Payne and Kellen Curry clocked to win the race and account for the fourth-best time in Academy history. The quartet teamed up to cross the finish line two seconds ahead of the competition. It is the Academy's best 4x100-meter relay time since SO LONG, FAREWELL: One of the longest-standing records in Academy history fell to the wayside on April 28, as the sprint medley relay team set a new program standard at the Drake Relays. Sophomore Kellen Curry, junior Travis Picou, senior Nick Luina and junior Kevin Hawkins finished the 1600-meter race in 3:19.52 to shatter the previous mark of 3:21.40 that James Thompson, Douglas Withers, Charles Clements and Dale Stovall originally set back in "RELAY"-ING SOME INFO: At the Drake Relays, junior Ian McFarland and senior Jason Beck joined sophomores Sean Houseworth and Matt Williams to record the fifth-fastest 4x1600-meter relay time in Academy history. With a combined time of 16:55.90, the quartet becomes just the fifth Air Force team to complete the race in less than 17 minutes. A BUSY DAY: Senior Nick Luina, who was a part of the record-setting sprint medley relay team at the Drake Relays, also ran a leg of the distance medley relay that finished ninth. Luina, along with classmate Richard Elmore and juniors Calvin Glass and Ian McFarland, crossed the finish line in 10: IN THE HOUSE: Sophomore Sean Houseworth clocked a NCAA Regional Qualifying Time of 14:11.23 to place seventh in the 5000-meter run at the Oregon Invitational. With the seventh-best time in Academy history, Houseworth set a new Sophomore Class record, displacing former Air Force great Eric Mack's 1994 time. In addition, it is the third-best time in the conference this season and the top time by a non-senior. MOVING IN: Sophomore Parker Cowles moved into the all-time standings with a 30:41.70 in the 10,000-meter run at the Oregon Invitational. That time is ninth on the Academy's all-time list. MAKE IT WORK: At the Jack Christiansen Invitational, senior Nick Luina earned first- and second-place finishes. Luina won the 400-meter dash, while placing second to junior Travis Picou in the 200-meter dash. Luina and Payne also teamed up with junior John Payne and sophomore Kellen Curry to win the 4x100-meter relay. The quartet clocked a time of to take first, a time just shy of the season-best mark they set last week. ISN'T THAT DEVINE?: Sophomore Kirk Devine improved his hammer throw distance by over eight feet at the Jack Christiansen Invitational. Throwing a fourth-place toss of 185'6", Devine not only upped his personal high (previously 177'4") but he also set a Sophomore Class record with the throw. 4x400-METER RELAY 3: Payne-Meakins-Picou-Luina April 14

SAC Decathlon on April 12. With 7334 points, Walsh not only finished third overall, but tallied the second-best decathlon total in Academy history. Those 7334 points is a Senior Class record, as well as a career improvement by over 400 points. Currently ranked fourth in the nation, Walsh is second on the Academy's all-time record books behind Marcus Nichols' 7723 points. GET OUT THE BROOMS: Freshman Dan Paladino threw a career-best 183'5" to win the hammer throw at the Mesa Classic. The NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark is the seventh-best distance in Academy history. Paladino led an Air Force sweep of the top three spots as sophomore Kirk Devine placed second (177'4") and senior Matt Pinson took third (156'8") MAKING HIS MARK: Freshman Nick Frawley posted the team's best finish at the Sun Angel Classic, clearing 16'2¾" in the pole vault. That mark was the second-best height by a collegiate athlete and tied for ninth on the Academy's all-time list. MAKING A STATEMENT: Backed by 18 event victories and a stellar overall day of competition, the Air Force track and field team had a remarkable showing at the first-ever Military Classic on March 31. The men won the inaugural meet against its fellow service academies, while the women took second. The men won eight of the 11 track events, including all five sprint races and relays, while the women accounted for wins in three of the four distance races and five of the eight field events. SHAVING OFF THE SECONDS: With a winning 100-meter dash time of at the Military Classic, junior Travis Picou set a new Junior Class record in that race. Already holding the Freshman and Sophomore Class marks in that event, Picou broke Russ Clemons' time of that was set in eight years before Picou was born. SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION: At the Military Classic, junior Travis Picou won two individual events, while running the second leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay with senior Nick Luina, junior John Payne and sophomore Kellen Curry. Curry won the 110-meter hurdles and finished second to Picou in the 100-meter dash. Luina, who accounted for a runnerup finish to Picou in the 200-meter dash, won the 400-meter dash and was also member of the 4x400-meter relay team with Payne, junior Kevin Hawkins and senior Brian Walsh. ONE AND TWO: Air Force took the top-two spots in four running events at VMI. The Falcons walked away with the most points allowed in the 100-meter dash (Travis Picou and Kellen Curry), 200-meter dash (Picou and Nick Luina), 800-meter run (Kevin Hawkins and Calvin Glass) and 300-meter steeplechase (Matt Williams and Jason Beck). In addition, Sebastian Ortiz finished third in the 800-meter run, giving the Falcons a complete sweep of the top spots. DOUBLE DIPPING: Sophomore Kirk Devine picked up a pair of event wins from the field at the VMI Military Classic, taking first in the hammer throw and discus throw. Devine led a one-two Air Force punch in the hammer, as freshman Dan Paladino finished second. TOPPING OUT: On the men's side at the Rob Upton Invitational, freshman Nick Frawley was the top Air Force scorer, as he placed second in the pole vault with a height of 15'11". That was the best mark by any collegiate competitor. MAKING HISTORY: Freshman Dan Paladino rounded out the Falcons' scorers at Colorado State with an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw. Recording a distance of 175'9", Paladino set a new Freshman Class record, in addition to tallying the 10th-best mark in Academy history. TAKING TWO: Junior Matt Gensic and sophomore Skylar Morgan were the top collegiate finishers at the Glenn Morris Multi-Events. Gensic's combined total of 6327 points was the best of any collegiate athlete and the 10th-best score in Academy history. Morgan accounted for 6117 points to finish the 10-event competition in third. TWO OUTTA THREE AIN'T BAD: Air Force took two of the top three spots in a pair of events at the Potts Invitational. Junior Travis Picou crossed the finish line in a regional qualifying time of to win the 200-meter dash, while senior Nick Luina finished third behind a time of Sophomore Harmon Gage won the javelin throw with a career-best 191'6", while senior Brandon Murphy took third with a distance of 175'11". HOW "DEVINE": Sophomore Kirk Devine claimed first-place honors in the discus throw at the Potts Invitational with a Regional Qualifying Mark. With a toss of 169'7", Devine's distance is a regional qualifying mark and the eighth-best time in Academy history. In addition, Devine finished fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 176'2". That mark is ninth on the Academy's all-time list.

Neubauer was the event runner-up with a throw of 48'3½", while Korte set a new Senior Class Record of 48'2" - the second-best throw in Academy history - to take third. NEUBAUER NAMED ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sara Neubauer was named the Mountain West Conference athlete of the week on May 8. With a NCAA Regional Qualifying throw, Neubauer won the shot put at the Falcons' home finale. In addition, Neubauer vaulted up five places in the all-time standings for the discus throw, as she heaved a 156'10" to take second. The distance, another NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark, is the third-best throw in Academy history. It is also the second-best throw in the Mountain West Conference this season. A "NEU" MARK: Freshman Sara Neubauer moved into third on the Academy's all-time list in the discus throw with a second-place throw of 156'10" at the Twilight Meet. The mark vaulted her standing in the program record book from eighth to third. In addition to it being a NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark, the distance is the second-best in the MWC this season. Neubauer also won the shot put at the home finale with a throw of 47'11¾". MAKING A STATEMENT: Freshman Melissa Beerse smashed her own Academy record in the pole vault at the Wyoming Invitational. Clearing a career-best 12'9½" to win the event by nearly a foot-and-a-half, Beerse also improved her NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark with the new program standard. Since her arrival at the Academy, she has increased the outdoor pole vault standard by nearly nine inches. MOVING ON UP: A pair of Air Force athletes moved up the standings in the Academy's all-time record book at the Wyoming Invitational. Senior Becky Stone improved her sixth-place position in the pole vault by clearing 10'9", while freshman Ally Romanko made a sixth-place debut in the 400-meter dash rankings with a time of MORE DRAKE DEALINGS: Senior Olivia Korte picked up a sixth-place finish in the discus throw with a distance of 162'1". In a field of 30, she was one of just eight throwers to surpass the 160-foot mark. Korte also competed in the shot put, placing 18th with a throw of 45'8½". Freshman Sara Neubauer recorded a distance of 45'6½" to finish 19th. MAKING HISTORY: Senior thrower Olivia Korte won the discus throw at the Oregon Invitational while also picking up a fourth-place throw in the shot put. Her winning discus throw comes one week after Korte set the Academy's Senior Class record at 169'6" to become the only Air Force athlete (male or female) to hold Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior class records in two events (she also holds all four class records in the weight throw). HAPPY HOMECOMING: Freshman Ally Romanko had a strong showing at meet in her home state of Oregon. Crossing the finish line of the 800-meter run in 2:10.49, Romanko moved into third on the Academy's all-time list. That time is also a new Freshman Class record, displacing the mark she originally set during the indoor season. MORE MORREALE: Freshman Brittany Morreale continued to climb up the Academy's all-time list in the 5000-meter run at the Oregon Invitational. Her time of 17:19.23 is fifth in the program's record book and a new Freshman Class record. WE NEED A REWRITE: Sophomore Michelle Fryling won the pole vault after clearing a career-best 11'7¾". That mark is a personal-best by nearly a foot, a Sophomore Class record and tied for the third-best distance in Academy history. In addition to Fryling, her fellow vaulters moved up in the program's all-time standings. Senior Becky Stone finished fourth with a height of 10'8", which is sixth on the all-time list, while freshman Jessica Schafer tied for sixth at 10'2", which is seventh in the program's record books. THIS SEEMS SO FAMILIAR: Just one meet after setting the Academy record in the shot put, freshman Sara Neubauer rewrote it. With a throw of 50'2¾", she set a new program standard to take second at the Mesa Classic on April 13. By improving her throw by over seven feet this season, Neubauer becomes the Mountain West Conference leader in that event. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST: Freshman Sara Neubauer continued to impact the record book at the Military Classic, as she won the shot put with an Academy record-setting distance. Her throw of 48'4" displaced the previous mark of 47'9¾" that was set by senior teammate Olivia Korte two years ago. ONE-TWO-THREE: Senior Olivia Korte claimed the collegiate equivalent of a gold, silver and bronze at the Military Classic. In addition to winning the discus throw, she finished second in the hammer throw and third in the shot put.

Freshman Katie Weber won the javelin throw, while fellow freshman Melissa Beerse took first in the pole vault. And in her first meet of the season, senior Dawn Higginbotham won the high jump. GOING THE DISTANCE: The Air Force women also had an impressive showing on the track, winning three of the four distance races. Junior Kelly Robinson won the 1500-meter run, while freshman Ally Romanko took first in the 800-meter run and classmate Brittany Morreale took first in the 5000-meter run. MORE ON MORREALE: As the only athlete to clear the 18-minute mark in the Military Classic's 5000-meter run, freshman Brittany Morreale accounted for the eighth-best time ever at the Academy, while topping the field by 16 seconds. THE FIRST HAS FALLEN: The season s first outdoor record fell as freshman Melissa Beerse set a new Academy standard in the pole vault on March 31. Beerse won the event with a Regional Qualifying Height of 12'5¾". That mark broke Ana Maria Ortega's 2001 record of 12'0½". The mark was also a new Freshman Class record, breaking the previous mark of 12'4¼" that Beerse set while setting the Academy's indoor record back in January. BUT, WAIT! THERE'S MORE: Melissa Beerse wasn't the only women's pole vaulter to impact the Academy's record book on March 24. With a new Sophomore Class record, Michelle Fryling cleared 11'3¾" to finish second in the event. IMPACT HOLES: Freshman Sara Neubauer finished second in the shot put at the Rob Upton Invitational with a throw of 42'5½" - a mark that is fifth on the Academy's all-time list. Fellow freshman Katie Weber threw a 136'5" in the javelin to take third. Weber's first collegiate throw was the sixth-best throw in Academy history. ONE WEEK-ONE HONOR: Senior Olivia Korte was named the MWC Athlete of the Week on March 21 for her stellar performance at the Potts Invitational. Korte was the top collegiate finisher in all three of her throwing events, including the overall winner in two. Her winning discus throw was a regional qualifying mark and the third-best throw of the short outdoor season. COURTIN' KORTE: Senior Olivia Korte picked up a pair of first-place finishes at the Potts Invitational. She took the top spot in the shot put with a distance of 45'7¾" and won the discus throw behind a throw of 167'2" - a regional qualifying mark that was over 17 feet better than the runner-up. In addition, Korte picked up a third-place mark in the hammer, behind a throw of 156'2". MOVING ON UP: At the Potts Invitational, Air Force had two incursions into the women's all-time record book. In the javelin throw, senior Casey Bayne finished third with a regional qualifying throw of 154'6", which is third-all-time. Sophomore Michelle Fryling improved her position in the all-time pole vault standings, as she cleared a career-best 11'1" to finish second. ALONE AT THE TOP: With 41 years of history behind it, the sprint medley relay mark had been tied for the oldest standard in the Academy record books. MAKING A STATEMENT: Backed by 18 event victories and a stellar overall day of competition, the Air Force track and field team had a remarkable showing at the first-ever Military Classic on March 31. The men won the inaugural meet against its fellow service academies, while the women took second. FAST AND SMART: The Air Force men's and women's cross country teams earned NCAA Division I All-Academic honors, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recently announced. The men, who previously earned the recognition during the seasons, were one of 86 men's teams to acquire that distinction during the 2006 season. The team averaged a grade-point-average of The women's team picked up their fifth all-academic honor in the last six years ( ), behind a combined average of BACK FOR MORE: Olivia Korte earned All-America honors in the discus during the 2006 outdoor championships.
