AIR FORCE TRACK AND FIELD NCAA DIVISION I OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS Wednesday-Saturday, June Fayetteville, Ark. (John McDonnell Field) Five members of the Air Force track and Field team head to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend for the 2009 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The four-day meet runs June at the John McDonnell Field on the University of Arkansas campus and will feature 544 athletes from across the country. THE FALCONS CAST The Academy will be represented by a program-best five athletes (six events) at the national championships. Junior Sara Neubauer will represent the women s team in the shot put and discus throw, while junior Nick Frawley (pole vault) and seniors Daniel Castle (1500-meter run), Kellen Curry (110-meter hurdles) and Sean Houseworth (10,000-meter run) will represent the men s team. Below is a complete list of the Air Force competitors and updated bios are on pages 3-5 of this release. MEN S TEAM Daniel Castle (1500-Meter Run) Kellen Curry (110-Meter Hurdles) Nick Frawley (Pole Vault) Sean Houseworth (10,000-Meter Run) WOMEN S TEAM Sara Neubauer (Shot Put, Discus Throw) SCHEDULING 101 Action for the Air Force contingent begins on Wednesday, June 10, with the qualifying flights of the shot put and pole vault. Thursday is the busiest day for the Falcons, with the qualifying round of the discus throw and final round of the shot put, as well as the first round of the 110-meter hurdles, the semifinals of the 1500-meter run and the finals of the 10,000-meter run. The pole vault final and the semifinal round of the 110-meter hurdles will take place on Friday, while the finals of the discus throw, 110-meter hurdles and 1500-meter run will conclude the championships on Saturday. THE VETERAN VAULTER It will be the first national championship appearance for all but one member of the Air Force contingent. Nick Frawley will be making his third appearance at the outdoor meet in as many years. It is also the fifth straight national championship appearance for the junior (2007 outdoor, 2008 indoor and outdoor, 2009 indoor and outdoor). total of the past three years combined (six all-region selections from ). HISTORY 101 Air Force had accounted 33 outdoor All-America certificates. Jim Murphy was the Falcons first All-American, taking first in the 5000-meter run at the 1964 championships. The men have tallied eight All-American, most recently Nick Frawley in The women have accounted for 25 All-Americans, including 21 that came during the Falcons time at the NCAA Division II level. LAST YEAR AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Then-sophomore Nick Frawley was the national runner-up in the pole vault at the 2008 championship meet. With a clearance of 17 2¾ in the event finals, Frawley became the Falcons 21st outdoor NCAA All-American. The second-place mark is the best finish for the men s program since Jim Murphy won the 5000-meter title in FALCONS SET PROGRAM RECORD WITH NINE ALL-REGION HONOREES Nine Falcons earned all-region honors in 10 events at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, accounting for the most topeight athletes ever at the regional meet. Air Force earned all-region distinction from seven men and two women, including junior Sara Neubauer, who collected awards in the shot put and discus throw. Neubauer, who first upped the standard to 53 2¾ one throw earlier, has rewritten her Academy standard by nearly four feet during three of her last four throws, dating back to the conference championships. TAKE TWO With a runner-up finish in the shot put and a third-place finish in the discus throw, Sara Neubauer became the second Air Force athlete to earn multiple spots in the national championship meet. Senior Sean Houseworth, who earned an automatic berth during an Academy-record setting 10,000-meter performance in March, placed fifth in the meter run at the regional meet to gain entrance to the finals in that event as well. (Due to the schedule of events at the national meet, Houseworth will focus his attention on the 10K and not compete in the 5000). FLYIN FRAWLEY Junior Nick Frawley cleared a career-best 17 7 to place third in the pole vault at the regional championships. That mark, cleared on his first attempt at that height, is the fourth-best clearance in Academy history during the outdoor season. Frawley is already the indoor record holder at FALCONS SHINE IN STEEPLECHASE Air Force accounted for three of the top 10 times in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the regional meet. Senior Matt Williams improved his personal-best time of 8:54.36 (the third-best time in Academy history) to finish sixth, while sophomore Justin Tyner and junior Zachary Nordahl placed eighth (9:05.06) and 10th (9:08.05), respectively. HONORING THEIR OWN Senior Sean Houseworth and junior Sara Neubauer received the team s MVP accolade at the program s end-of-year banquet on May 24, while senior Kellen Curry and junior Ally Romanko were awarded the Most Outstanding Competitor honors. In all, the program handed out 20 awards, while recapping the 2009 season. MORGAN WINS MWC DECATHLON TITLE With a career-best total of 6,750 points, senior Skylar Morgan won the MWC decathlon title on May 14. After entering the day in fourth, Morgan tallied several career-best marks to vault into first at win his first conference title. Improving his career total by 193 points, Morgan accounted for the fifth-best decathlon score in Academy history. WOMEN TALLY PROGRAM-BEST 62 POINTS AT CONFERENCE MEET The women s team finished seventh at the Mountain West Conference Championships with a program-record 62 points. The seventh-place finish in the team standings ties for the second-highest finish in program history. The men finished fourth in the team standings. AIR FORCE CLAIMS 13 ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS The Falcons accounted for 13 all-conference accolades at the conference meet, including an unprecedented five topthree selections from the women s team. In addition, four of the medals came from members of the freshmen class. A ONE-TWO PUNCH Senior Skylar Morgan and sophomore Noah Palicia finished first and second, respectively, in the decathlon at the conference championships on May 14. Like Morgan, Palicia vaulted up four places during the final day of competition. Palicia secured the silver medal by winning the final three events, despite suffering a broken nose during the pole vault competition. In just her first year of throwing the implement, she finished fourth with a distance of One day later, she adjusted her own program-leading record in the shot put to 50 10¾, while scoring in the javelin throw with the eighth-best distance in Academy history. EUREKA HS 10,000-METER RUN Making third straight appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships...earned All- America status at last year s outdoor meet...tied for ninth on the National Descening Order list heading into the championships. With a career-best throw of in the javelin throw at the conference championships on May 16, Paige Blackburn moved into third on the program s all-time list. Her distance also set a new Freshman Class record, breaking the previous mark of that Dana Pounds set in IT WAS BLUE AT THE TOP In the final team competition of his collegiate career, Kellen Curry was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles, pushed the 4x100-meter relay team to an impressive third-place finish and scored for the Falcons in the 200-meter dash. Curry was not the only Air Force representative on the hurdles medal podium as freshman Bryce Bergman, a teammate on the 4x100-meter relay, placed third. MEN REPEAT AS CHAMPS OF THE FRONT RANGE Highlighted by six titles, the men successfully defended its title at the Front Range Classic on May 2. The Falcons defeated the five other local opponents, besting the field by at least 44 points. In addition, the women finished second. HAMMERING IT OUT Although it is just her first year of throwing the hammer, junior Sara Neubauer blasted the Academy standard at the Front Range Classic. Neubauer won the event with a toss of a personal improvement by nearly 20 feet! That distance easily broke the Falcons nine-year-old record of that was originally set by Tara Copas. DOUBLING UP Sara Neubauer and Kellen Curry each won a pair of events at the Front Range Classic. Neubauer won the hammer (182 8 ) and discus (164 7 ), while Curry finished first in the 200-meter dash (21.52) and 110-meter hurdles (14.30). Williams won the meet with an altitude adjusted time of 8:58.90, while Nordahl placed second in 9:05.61a. Williams time is the third-fastest steeplechase time in Academy history. GIVING IT AN AIR FORCE SEAL OF APPROVAL Air Force put its stamp on the results of the javelin throw at the FRC, as Connor Van Fossen won the event with a meet record Harmon Gage (193 7 ), Jon Santiago (180 6 ) and Noah Palicia (178 4 ) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. On the women s side, Katie Weber (143 5 ) and Paige Blackburn (128 5 ) finished first and second. OTHER WINNERS FROM THE FRC Nick Frawley won the men s pole vault (16 0¾ ) at the Front Range Classic, while Rachel Simmons and Kimber Shealy tied for the top spot (11 1 ¾ ) in the women s event. Maxwell Lutton won the 400-meter dash in TAKE TWO Kellen Curry picked up a pair of first-place finishes at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational over the April weekend. On Friday, Curry clocked a regional qualifying time of to place first in the 200-meter dash. Clocking in the 110-meter hurdles, he followed that up with another regional qualifying victory on Saturday. CALIFORNIA LIVIN Dan Paladino was the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw (second overall) at the Brutus Hamilton Invite (April 24-25), while the men recorded top-10 finishes in the javelin throw from Connor Van Fossen, Harmon Gage and Jon Santiago. Katie Weber was second among collegiates (third overall) in the javelin, while Sara Neubauer was second in the discus and third in the shot put. In addition, Paige Blackburn picked up a pair of top-five finishes (javelin, shot put). MEN TAKE SECOND AT COLORADO STATE Highlighted by top-five finishes from Sebastian Ortiz, Benjamin Cox and Bryce Bergman, the men tied for second at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins on April 25. Ortiz won the 1500-meter run, while finishing fourth in the 800. Bergman, who finished third in the 110-meter hurdles, and Cox, who placed fifth in the 400-meter dash, ran a leg of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished third. PHAELEN FRENCH MOVES INTO HEPTATHLON TOP-10 In her collegiate heptathlon debut, Phaelen French accounted for 3,814 points to move into ninth on the program s alltime list. Competing at the Glenn Morris Heptathlon in Fort Collins on April 23-24, French finished fifth overall. 12 MORE NEWS & NOTES MOVING ON UP Nercressaine White, Tawny Lambuth, Gabrielle Quirao and Jessica Mapes combined for a winning time of in the 4x100-meter relay to move up the Academy record books, as that is the fourth-fastest time in Academy history. Lambuth wasn t done impacting the record book, as she moved into ninth all-time with a pole vault clearance of 10 11¾. DUO WRAPS UP ACTION AT CALIFORNIA MULTI-MEET Skylar Morgan placed ninth in the decathlon at the California Multi-Meet (April 15-16), while junior Danielle McCarty finished 19th in the heptathlon. Highlighted by a secondplace finish in the 110-meter hurdles, Morgan tallied 6,245 points to place ninth in the 29-member competition. McCarty tallied 4,302 points to finish within the top-half of the heptathlon field. Her best event finish came in the 800-meter race, as she placed eighth. MOVING ON UP Clocking a career-best time of 9:08.59 in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 16, Zach Nordahl moved into ninth on the Academy s all-time list. Scott Balcao and Parker Cowles made a mark on the program s 10K record book that night. Balcao (30:28.13) and Cowles (30:31.19) moved into eighth and 10th, respectively. JUSTIN TYNER PACES FALCONS ON DAY TWO OF MT SAC Justin Tyner won the 5000-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 17. Clocking a time of 14:11.37 the ninth-fastest time in program history he took first in a field of 47. Kellen Curry was the top collegiate finisher in the 200-meter dash (third overall) at 21.28, while Sara Neubauer took second in the shot put (48 10 ) and discus throw ( ). HE S NOT DONE YET On April 18, Kellen Curry added a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles to his weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays. Curry clocked a time of to take second. KIMBER SHEALY WINS POLE VAULT WITH PERSONAL-BEST CLEARANCE Freshman Kimber Shealy cleared the second-highest mark in Academy history (12 7½ ) to win the pole vault at the Beach Invitational on April 18. The regional qualifying clearance is tied with sophomore Rachel Simmons for second on the all-time list. WHITE IT OUT Sophomore Nercressaine White improved her standing on the program s all-time list in a pair of events. She moved into fifth in the 200-meter dash (25.45), while clocking a time of in the 100-meter dash to move into eighth all-time. IT S NOTHING NEW FOR NEUBAUER Sara Neubauer continued to finish amongst the top of the field in her events at the Beach Invite, picking up three top-10 finishes. Her outing was highlighted by fifth-place finishes in the shot put and discus, while she also recorded a ninth-place toss in the hammer. FRESH FACES PACE THE MEN S TEAM Freshman Bryce Bergman, sophomore Matthew Jones and classmate Matt Davis paced the men s team at the Beach Invitational. The each accounted for individual top-10 finishes, while running a leg of the third-place 4x400-meter relay with sophomore Tyler Stanley. Jones captured the team s best finish, as he took third in the 400-meter hurdles, while Bergman earned high finishes in the 110-meter (eighth) and 400-meter (ninth) hurdles. FALCONS SHARE THIRD AT TOM BOTTS INVITATIONAL The men s team accounted for points to place third at Missouri s Tom Botts Invitational, while the women earned a third-place total of 130 points. In all, Air Force claimed six first-place finishes and one Meet record. She impacted the Academy s record book in all three events, as she improved her all-time standings in the shot put (fifth, 44 4 ), javelin throw (eighth, ) and discus throw (10th, ). PICKING UP SOME WINS In addition to Kellen Curry s wins in the dash and hurdles, Air Force earned a first-place finish in the javelin, as Connor Van Fossen won the event with a toss of FRAWLEY DOES IT AGAIN Nick Frawley was named the MWC Athlete of the Week for the second time this year on April 7. The junior, who finished third on the pole vault at the Texas Relays at 17 4½, is currently tied for the best height in the MWCe and the fourth-best in the nation. DID YOU KNOW? Nick Frawley s conference award marked the second straight week that a member of the Air Force men s team has earned the league s top weekly honor. Sean Houseworth won the award on March 31 for his record-setting 10K performance at Stanford. FRAWLEY QUALIFIES TO REGIONAL MEET Clearing a season-best 17 4½ on the pole vault at the Texas Relays, Nick Frawley earned a spot at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. As the Falcons lone representative, he finished in third place and just one inch shy of his career high. NEW FOR NEUBAUER Sara Neubauer collected a pair of personal-best marks during the first day of action at the Tom Benich Classic on April 3. Neubauer, who competed in the elite discus, upped her career-best distance ( ) to defeat the field and move closer to the program standard of She also participated in the hammer, tossing a personal-best of STILL IMPROVING Sara Neubauer has improved her PR in the discus by 10 feet since the season began, while adding 30 feet to her hammer distance since debuting in that event on March 20. CURRY EARNS MEET HONOR Senior Kellen Curry, who won two events and ran a leg of the second-place 4x100- meter relay team, was named the Outstanding Male Athlete of the Tom Botts Invitational in Missouri on April 11. Curry clocked the third-best time in Academy history to win the 200-meter dash (21.20), while placing first in the 110-meter hurdles in He also ran the final leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that placed second in HOUSEWORTH EARNS MWC HONOR FOR GOOD REASON Sean Houseworth picked up his first-ever MWC Athlete of the Week award on March 31, after setting an Academy record and automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter run at Stanford. Clocking 28:33.71, the senior shattered the program standard, while decreasing his PR by nearly two minutes. REGIONAL MARKS HIGHLIGHT SPRING TRAINING FINALE Seven regional qualifying marks were set at ASU on March 28. In addition, Air Force recorded two victories and made seven changes to the program s all-time record book. RUNNIN ROMANKO Ally Romanko won the 800-meter run at ASU with a career-best, regional qualifying 2: That time improved her second-place standing on the program s all-time list, as she moved closer to the program record. She was one of two Falcons to impact the alltime 800-meter list, as Becca Burditt debuted at 10th with a time of 2: TY ING UP A SPOT Justin Tyner won the steeplechase at ASU, with a career-high, record-book-changing time of 9: That moved him into fifth in the program s all-time standings. Tyner paced the Falcons to two of the top-three spots, as Justin Mason finished third in 9: ROMANKO S STRONG WEEKEND Junior Ally Romanko had a strong weekend at the Willie Williams Classic, winning the 800-meter run and placing third in the 1500-meter run. A STELLAR DEBUT Freshman Paige Blackburn made her mark in two of the program s all-time lists during her outdoor debut on March Blackburn recorded the fifth-best shot put toss (42 9¾ ) in program history, while notching the 10th-best discus distance (139 9 ) ever. OTHER RECORD BOOK ADDITIONS Several other Falcons made an impact on the record book at the Willie Williams Classic. Freshman Paige Blackburn improved her 10th-place standing in the all-time discus throw records, with a toss of POUNDS NAMED TO MWC 10TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM Former Air Force standout Dana Pounds ( ) was named to the Mountain West Conference 10th Anniversary Women s Outdoor Track and Field Team on April 1. Over her outstanding four-year career with the Falcons, Pounds won three conference titles and back-to-back national championships in the javelin throw. She is the only member of the 10th anniversary team (men s or women s) to earn multiple national titles. NEUBAUER FOR TWO Sara Neubauer had a strong start to the outdoor season at the Willie Williams Classic, winning a pair of events, setting two regional qualifying marks, adjusting her spot in two top-10 lists and posting two personal-best marks. She won the shot put (48 11½ ) and discus throw (161 2 ) with regional qualifying marks, while upping her second-place standing on the program s all-time discus list. In addition, Neubauer threw a in her hammer throw debut to move into ninth-place on the program s all-time standings. GOING REGIONAL Sara Neubauer wasn t the only Air Force field event athlete to record regional qualifying marks on March Nick Frawley and Dan Paladino tallied marks in the pole vault and hammer throw, respectively.
