It is a great pleasure for me to welcome all of you coming to cheer on the contestants for the WOC titles. At the same time, I encourage you to take part at one or more of the races in the WOC terrain. Here in the south-eastern parts of Norway, not far from the Swedish border, you will find great forest areas, a beautiful archipelago and pleasant town centres that also will stage some of the spectator races during WOC. Out in the nature in Østfold the surroundings are beautiful and diverse. It can offer pristine wilderness, hundreds of ponds, pine forest and marshes where you even might catch a glimpse of a moose. The spectator races are the most characteristic events that differ the sport of orienteering from other sports, where the spectators wish to participate and experience the championship in the same way as the elite athletes. My wish is that many people will get to experience Østfold s outdoor nature during the spectator races, and promise that I will have a go at it myself as well! Starting hours are estimated as of today and will be confirmed as soon as they are adjusted to the WOC competitions and screening times are finally determined. N-åpen (see class description below) is given the opportunity to start from one hour before the official first start. Open Direct classes are open in the same time span as the ordinary classes shown in the table below. Classes might be merged or split in order to keep the events time limits. The course lengths for the sprint (12 th Aug) are set with a winning time of approx. 15 minutes in mind. Side 4

5 N-courses (beginners) has an obvious route choice along coherent track lines like roads, paths, creeks/ditches and fences. All controls are visible from the track lines. Suitable for anyone who is completely new to the sport or have little previous experience with orienteering. C-courses mostly follow track lines; but runners are expected to leave the track lines occasionally. Some of the legs might have route choices. B-courses have the runners doing the final part of the leg orienteering without track lines towards the control. An understanding of contours is needed in B-courses. A-courses are the most challenging, and all orienteering techniques are involved. All classes use emit cards for time measuring and punching. Emit cards can be rented for runners from outside of Norway, and for everyone in the Open Direct classes. For classes years of age the top 1/3 is rewarded. I the elite and A classes 17-18, and years of age, a minimum of the top 1/8 of all starters is rewarded. For all other classes aged 17 and older the winner is rewarded. No prizes in Open Direct classes. Side 6

Find us at the race office at the arena and we ll help you. The spectator races are organised as six separate competitions, and you will need to make separate entries for each race. Open Direct classes and N-åpen can either register through Eventor or register at the arena up until one hour before the first start. There will be shuttle buses from the parking area at Rudskogen to the arena at Knatterudfjellet on Tuesday 13 th of August. (1,5 km). Shuttle buses to the arena at Mørk might be arranged from several parking areas, but the final logistics concerning this matter will be decided closer to the event. Keep updated at woc2019.no PS: On our website there will appear more information regarding transportation, hotels etc. What can the arena offer? FOOD: At Mørk we are proud to offer a rich variety of local food from Østfold, in cooperation with Guldkorn. Same concept at Knatterudfjellet in a slightly smaller scale. In Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad there will be an even simpler food sale. Shops and restaurants are open. Showers: Shower close to the arena at Mørk. Access to locker rooms at the sprint in Sarpsborg and the middle-distance in Fredrikstad. No shower facilities at Knatterudfjellet. Sports equipment: You can buy sports equipment on the arena at Mørk. Child care: We offer child care at the arenas for children age 4 and older. Activities: Stolpejakt (pole hunt), maze-o and småtroll (small children s courses). Thursday (15/8) the race is in proximity to Kongsten open air bath, with opportunities for sunbathing and a dip in the pool to cool down after the race... Side 7
