Thank you to all the sponsors of the BSi Duke of York BSi Steel Ltd - Leaders in steel distribution in AFRICA 46 Eden Park Drive, Murrayfield Park, Pietermaritzburg. Telephone Hi-Q Tyre n Tube Greyling Street : Telephone Valverite cc Victoria Road : Telephone Neil MacKenzie - Cell Duzi Convenience Centre 381 Boshoff Street : Telephone Time Freight 241 Victoria Road Telephone President s Report Les Burnard I attended the Team Comrades dinner on 24 November and was very proud to witness members of Collegians Harriers receiving Green Names awards for assisting at Comrades over many years. The recipients were: Mike Arbuthnot for 40 years service (incredible), Mike Rivers-Moore, 30 years service and Adrian Stowell 20 years service. Congratulations to you all! I encourage all our members (and their partners) to join the Comrades Marathon Association which is open to anyone and not only registered runners. The association hosts fun evenings during the year for members and the cost is only R20 per annum. Should you join the CMA you are not obliged to assist at Comrades as this is purely optional. We assume that KZN Athletics will have received the ASA licences before our licensing evening which we have scheduled to take place on 14 January As in the past we also must assume that KZN Athletics will allow runners/walkers to participate in events for the month of January in their 2016 ASA numbers. As soon as KZNA clarifies the situation we notify members. The club has a Rhodes entry for the 2017 event which will take place on 8 July 2017 so, if you are on the waiting list, and wish to participate, please contact me before 17 February There are many uncollected Collegians Club membership cards at the club and it would be appreciated if you could collect your card on any Tuesday at Herman s Haunt after 5 pm. Lastly, I would like to wish all our Christian members a very Happy Christmas and to all members the very best for I hope you will achieve your running goals in the new year. Keep well. Les 25 2

Road Captain s Report Clive Willows For those who read the President s report in the previous Roundup it will be apparent to them that the 2017 management and functioning within Collegians Harriers cannot be a repeat of this year. I would urge members to participate in the AGM on 3 December. The end of a year is typically a time of both reflection and planning. How has this year worked out for you? And have your goals, both running related and in other areas, been achieved? And what plans ahead for 2017? For Comrades entrants, it is necessary to give thought to your build-up over the next 6 months. Below is a table of (some of) the races (provisional) in the weeks prior to 4 th June. This year Two Oceans is only 7 weeks before and those planning to run both would need to be realistic regarding their prospective times. The table indicates a full calendar with a number of different options available through which to develop and prepare. Looking at this calendar, there does not seem to be an ideal Sunday to host such an event there are a variety of options for runners plus 2 long weekends. I have therefore not included a RT in the table and there is a possibility that we would not organise the event next year. We will make a decision in January but your views and opinions would be welcomed. I take this opportunity to thank those who have supported and assisted in the various activities of the club during the past year, and for the assistance in enabling me to fulfil my role as Road Captain. This position will be relinquished with relief at the AGM and is available for any volunteer. May you and your families enjoy a pleasant, peaceful and safe time during the Christmas and New Year period. We look forward to you signing up for another year of membership which will begin on Saturday 14 January following the running of the annual Bill Butler 10km Challenge which will end at 6pm and begin whenever you feel ready. Further details will appear on the club notice board. 9 Pre-Race Hype Make your friends aware that you are going to blast your existing PB for the distance, out of the window, so that when you fail, you will, unquestionably, look like a right, real Charlie in everybody s eyes. Race Pace On the start line, push and elbow your way to the front. When the gun is fired, go out faster than the early leaders. Do not hold back. Set the pace, thereby forcing them to take notice of your intentions and go with you. You can bomb out, exhausted, after the first kilometer and start walking. When you hobble home near the back of the field, you can tell everyone that things didn t go quite as planned and that it was just a bad day at the office. It is as simple as that. No more excuses for a below-par effort; go out and make it happen.. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP The club champion will be runner with the most points accumulated in 8 races and the Herman's Delight 7,3 km course. Points will be awarded to men and women in a separate log as follows: 1st runner 20 points, 2nd runner 19 points with the 19 th runner earning 2 points. Thereafter each finisher will receive 1 point. Members who compete in less than 5 runs will not be considered for a category prize. The best points scored in 8 races out of the following 17 races will count towards points. The races are: Kms Ronnie Davel Jan Kearsney Jan PDAC Jan :08:16 Annie Padayachee F Should your name not appear in the race results or if there is an error in the results please contact Alain Marechal on Herman s Delight Time Trial Established on 26 July 1960 Our Weekly Time Trial, Herman s Delight, takes place every Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 pm from our Club House, Herman's Haunt, at 381 Boshoff Street, Pietermaritzburg. Never ingest anything liquid or solid in the twelve hours preceding the start. If possible, refrain from eating and drinking in the final forty-eight hours before race time to avoid carrying excess weight. Remember, water is very heavy. Every hour that you can abstain from taking in food and drink, exponentially improves your chances of failure. Vitamin Supplements The only essential vitamin supplement you need to introduce into your diet is iron; preferably in tablet form. Again, the dosage must grossly exceed the recommended daily requirement, and must commence three months prior to the race. It must be pursued to the point of saturation, because you need to enhance the chances for all magnetic debris on the roadside to attach to your skin so that the additional weight you pick up, will slow you down to the extent that you are forced to retire before halfway. If a reputable source of iron tablets cannot be located (or if the cost is unjustifiable) a suitable alternative, during all waking hours, is to suck on a rusty nail. Tapering By race-day, you will have completed your training and should be in peak condition to storm home in a new PB. All that is now required is to destroy that base work. While other idiots are finalising their pre-race taper, you need to go out the afternoon before race-day for a speed session, over half the race distance, at two minutes per kay faster than race-pace. This will ensure that you line up absolutely bushed and, with luck, be forced to bail before the 8-kay marker. 9 18

The major benefit for a male runner, however, is that if the recommended dosage is strictly adhered to, he is likely to end up running like a girl. Alcohol Arrange a barbecue, with a few friends, at your home the night before a race. Gorge yourself to the limit on spicy wors and peri-peri Texan steaks. Indulge yourself with copious quantities of the cheapest Yugoslavian plonk you can find, to way beyond your absolute capacity; preferably to the stage where you fail to recognise your wife and, better still, to the point where you make a pass at your neighbour s husband or their Great Dane. A five-litre box is preferable as it negates the limiting quantity of a bottle. Drink half a cup of sour cream before turning in for the night or more likely the early morning. If your timing has been accurate, you should be left with little more than two hours sleep. The benefit of this procedure is that if, by some miracle, you make it to the start of the race, the chances are you will collapse, and drift into a coma, as you climb out of your car. Emetics Before leaving home on race morning, a double dose of any recommended commercially branded emetic will ensure that you hurl your heart out long before the 5-kay mark and, if you are fortunate, it may well occur on the start line. If you are fortunate enough for this to occur, the benefit is that you are sure to have a lot of space to move in and will not be sardined in, as is the norm at all starts. If your pre-race planning was not carried out carefully, causing you to omit procuring this essential item, a 250 ml mug comprising half black coffee and half Worcestershire, sauce is an adequate substitute. If this technique fails to induce puking, it is guaranteed to result in an uncontrollable liquid emission from the rear end.either way you win. 17 The Collegians Harriers Walking Group The Walkers meet at the Harriers Clubhouse on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 4:45 pm and set off for their walk at 5 pm. There are two groups: one that walks approximately 7 kilometres and the other group approximately 5 kilometres. On the last Wednesday of every month the walkers meet at Collegians Club for their Pub n Grub supper and occasionally have a braai evening at the Harriers Clubhouse. All events are placed on the Walkers notice board at the club and any changes are communicated through Whatsapp. New members are always welcome. Please contact the persons below for more information. Nowhere, amongst the myriad of articles contained in the running literary world, will you find advice for Puking on the Start Line or How to Induce Gyppo Guts. It is, in my opinion, a totally unacceptable situation. In plain language the whole system stinks. However, to rectify the gross imbalance that permeates the running press, here are some tried and tested methods on how to go about producing a sub-standard performance at any time one chooses. These practices are cataloged in my personal unpublished training diaries and have been scientifically designed, and tested, to guarantee a highly satisfactory failure rate. I have categorised them for easy reference. Apply them it is not difficult and you will be rewarded with a wonderfully, disastrous performance. Any of these practices is efficacious on its own, but a combination of two or more, yields a far greater assurance of disaster. All that is required are the four Ps; practice, perseverance, patience and puking and your perspective of running will be transformed. A whole new vista of failure will open up for you. Estrofem Supplements (This paragraph can be disregarded by female runners) This essentially female hormone is highly recommended for male runners, provided the daily dosage imbibed is thrice that prescribed for women. The benefits are so encouraging that a world-renowned running publication conducted a study on both male and female runners and discovered, amazingly, that the sole difference between the genders was that the female subjects, on the programme, developed bigger boobs than the males. However, a close examination of female participants in long-distance events (and Diamond League Meetings on TV), fails to substantiate those findings of the study

administration of the estates would have been obviated. Additionally, costs would have been less and it is more than likely that proper planning would have diminished any feelings of acrimony between the parties. The moral of the story? Take advice when preparing your will as it should minimize the occurrence of events such as those related in this article. Members Corner WHO NEEDS A PB? By Brian Swart It is extremely annoying and highly irritating. Every training manual and running publication, found on the shelves of bookstores and newsagents around the country, is filled with schedules and plans on how to go about achieving a new PB. What about those runners who DO NOT have any intention of improving on their previous best performance over a particular or, for that matter, any distance? What about those who DO NOT wish to run a 1:15 standard marathon or go under 2:50 on Comrades? Why is there NEVER any useful advice on how to train specifically to achieve a worst-ever time? Why are there NEVER any training schedules published on how to prepare that category of competitor to bomb out of Comrades before Toll Gate on the Up Run or Polly s on the Down? Why do these publications pander, exclusively, to the needs and whims of a select few who are incapable of changing down a gear at any stage of their racing career and burn out before they turn thirty? Why has this critical issue, NEVER been addressed? 15 Notices New ASA age category & walker tags To qualify for an age category or walker prize in a race you must have a ASA approved tag on the front and the back of your vest. These are available from the club at a cost of R10 per pair. Collegians Harriers club colours Top: White with 50mm hoops of Red and Black, 50mm apart, immediately below the armholes. The words COLLEGIANS HARRIERS, printed in 20mm high black upper-case frankfurter letters, shall be placed one below the other above the red hoop on the right-hand side of the front and in the centre of the back. Shorts: Black Forthcoming events Braai Nites: 13 December and 10 January Our Braai Nite is a bring and braai occasion so bring your own meat, salads etc. The club now provides either a vegetable bake or a salad free of charge to members. The run is totally unsupported, so please bring your own liquid refreshments with you. This event is open to everyone so invite your friends to join you. There is no charge. 12

Bill Butler Memorial Run/Walk: Saturday 14 January 2017 The Bill Butler is a 10-km handicap event, which any runner or walker can win. The winner is the person who finishes the event closest to 6 pm.. The run/walk starts and finishes at Herman s Haunt Hut at Collegians. You may start at whatever time you choose but remember to base your calculations on the clock at the start. A bring and braai will be held after the event and our bar will be open as usual. Licensing Evening: Saturday 14 January 2017 The 2017 ASA licences will hopefully be available and club subs may be paid at Herman s Haunt from 3:30 pm to 7 pm. The club subscription for 2017 (excluding the ASA licence which will cost R120 next year) will be determined at our Annual General Meeting on 3 December ARTICLE FROM OUR SPONSOR, J Leslie Smith & Co Freedom of Testation THE CHOICE IS YOURS Written by Margaret McCullough In South Africa, our common law provides that a person making a will has the freedom to bequeath his or her assets as he or she wishes upon his/her death. This freedom has become limited to some extent as cases of hardship have occurred by virtue of the principle of freedom of testation. Laws have been introduced to limit the common law and to require you to make proper provision for a spouse or a dependent child in the event of your death, and a failure to do so, permits a spouse or a dependent child to make a claim for maintenance against your estate. It is therefore advisable to take proper advice when drawing a will to ensure you are not creating an environment for a claim by a party against your estate upon your death. 13 For example, recently a person died and failed to make provision for his spouse in his will. He and his spouse had not lived together for some years prior to his death, but until his death he had provided a degree of monthly financial support to his spouse. His spouse took legal advice and with the help of an actuary formulated a claim against her late husband s estate which was ultimately accepted by the executor of her late husband s estate. The need to claim against her husband s estate however brought about feelings of resentment in the family, and incurred delays in winding up the estate. Furthermore, costs were incurred by virtue of the necessity to appoint an actuary to calculate a reasonable sum to claim from the estate of the late husband. Very often in a situation of divorce, the parents of the child or children in the divorce do not wish to think of their monies being controlled by the surviving parent in the event of one of them dying prior to their child/ren becoming self -sufficient. In one such circumstance, a father chose to bequeath his assets to his parents with a wish expressed to them verbally that they would take care of his child who was in the care of the father s ex-wife. The ex-wife successfully brought a claim for maintenance on behalf of her minor dependent child against the estate of her late ex-husband. The monies paid on behalf of the dependent child had to be paid to the Guardian s Fund as the father had not created any structure in his will, such as a trust, to provide for the minor child. This required the ex-wife to lodge claims for maintenance for the dependent child against the monies held in the Guardian s Fund, which in some instances proved to be cumbersome. Unfortunately, the situation brought about acrimony between the father s parents and the ex-wife as the father s parents did not feel there was any need for the ex-wife to make such a claim as they were prepared to administer their late son s estate on what they considered to be best for their grandson. The ex-wife did not wish decisions relating to her child s needs to be at the mercy of her ex-in-laws and for that reason brought the maintenance claim against her ex-husband s estate. In both the above examples, if the wills of the deceased parties had made proper provision for the spouse/dependent child, delays in the 14
