LAPD Newsletter Welcome to season 2015/2015 at LAPD Tri Club, a big thanks to all returning members who have joined up already (for those who haven t yet it s time to get a move on) and it is also good to see a few new names on the list and we hope to see you down at some of the clubs activities in the coming months. Last season we had a total of 10 Women and 23 men racing in 23 different races with a total number of race starts of 83 (down on 100 last year), most of them close to home some interstate in Victoria, the ACT, Queensland and WA, and 2 international locations being China (Annie Simmons and Peter O Sullivan) and USA (Paul Eisenhuth) and as well as special mention to Kirsten Gorman and Annie Simmons for qualifying for the big dance in Hawaii. The yellow and purple was seen most at with 15 racing and there was some solid action at Port Mac Ironman with 6 LAPD finishers. We had a smaller team at Club Champs with 9 racers and 2 volunteers, everyone put in a great effort but we fell well short of top spot, in 2015 we will be targeting a good result and defending the Mark Samuels Trophy with a some new faces at the club and some old hands moving into new age groups. Presentation night was the highlight of the club social activities as usual, a big thanks to everyone who attended and congratulations to the award winners Club Champion Male Walter Brzica Duathlon Champion Male Tim Molesworth Club Champion Female Annie Simmons Duathlon Champion Female Terrie Hayter Ian Green Ironman Award Joe Dimech Dave Morris Club Spirit Award Ben Hill KOM Ben Hill QOM Annie Simmons Most Improved Walter Brzica For the full table of club champion points see page 8 The committee has made a few changes to the points score system for the coming season to accommodate the changing face of triathlon in NSW and Australia Western Sydney joins our targeted races at the same level as Huskisson and Ironman Australia. A list of points allocations can be found on page 7

Triathlon s Run Some late season results from 2013/2014 but believe it or not racing has already started for some (Eugene) Ironman Australia Kim Fraser Peter O Sullivan Alvaro Martinez Walter Brzica Paul Martin Tony Farrell 13:10:21 11:31:56 13:51:43 11:49:03 13:11:44 14:10: Cairns Annie Simmons 7:09:08 Elite Energy Womens Triathlon Debbie Henniker 1:22:58 Hardman Wales Triathlon Eugene Irvin 15:46:03 Duathlon LAPD Duathlon series has been run over the winter months but we were lucky enough to have sunny days for each race. The first 4 races saw some dominant performances in both the women s and men s divisions. In the women s racing new club member Gina Jessop took the win in races 1 and 4 as well as scoring a close second behind Naomi Dimech in race 3. 2 was blown away by Lilian Molesworth in her only race for the season, beating all but one of the men. Terrie Hayter, Annie Simmons and Annette Alexander also featured in the top 3 of the races they completed. The men s races kicked off with Kevin Dixon winning race 1 but then saw the same face at the front of races 2, 3 and 4 (me), the minor placings were shared between David Alland, Daniel Milutinovic, Blake Johnstone, Josesh Zacched, Walter Brzica, Alan Whitmore. The season finale was run in a handicap format with each competitor sent off based on their season s performance or on an improvised time as assessed by the race director (2 out of 3 were on the money). This set up some great battles between competitors as the faster athletes tried to chase down those in front. In the end it was a wire to wire win for Terrie Hayter, closely followed by Kevin Dixon, in the end 8 out of the 9 individuals racing finished with 7 minutes of each other. (Season race results and champion table are on pages 13-16)

Multisport This year there were 3 competitors in LAPD colours taking on the Gloucester Mountain Man, first timers Adam Henley and Dan Eisenhulth (who used to be LAPD members when they were younger) joined 3 time veteran Ben Hill (me) to take on the rolling hills and crystal clear waters between Gloucester and the Barrington Top National Park. The mountain bike leg started off without any dramas (there was one close call that saw my back wheel of the ground in the middle of the bunch) and all 3 boys were safely in the front bunch for the road section. Then came the hills, I had pushed the pace toward the end of the bitumen and started the dirt secion a little fatigued (also had a chest infection that didn t help none) and drop back, hendo had the good legs early and continued riding with the front runners but after loosing traction on one of the uphills he let me past and waited for Dan. The bike course wound its way through farmland and although not technical has some steep sections that saw me walking a couple of times. After slowly making my way back toward the top ten, I bombed down the last section of road into the river and was finally off the bike in 12 th.

Adam and Dan followed about 4 minutes back, which worked out well because they could help each other carry the kayaks down to the river. Unfortunately for me it wasn t long before I saw them again, a rudder malfunction meant I had no steering, or worse, a kayak that only goes in circles. I hadn t even reached the first rapids when they went by and still had no idea how I was going to be able to finish the race. After several attempts to bully my kayak into doing what I want by force I managed to work out that I could make a modification that would keep the rudder straight (more or less) and I was able to carry on, albeit a bit awkwardly. With about 1 km of river to go I passed Dan and Adam again, then as soon as I was out of sight, hit a tree and fell in (not for the first time). Finally the end of the kayak leg was reached and it was just a 9 km run to get to the finish line. Having fallen back to 36 th while dealing with my kayaking issues the job ahead was to pick up as many runners as I could. The 8 th fastest run split saw me up in 22 nd (if you don t count the 4 women in front of me) and not completely disappointed with my day out. Adam (29 th ) and Dan (33 rd ) also posted respectable finishes for their first attempt considering that bikes and kayaks had been acquired in the weeks before the race and had seen little use. The weather was great for us this year, the river full and the scenery out on course is pretty awesome, I hope to see a few more LAPDers having a go at one of the most fun races there is anywhere around in 2015.

On the Horizon It s that time of the year where either the winter training is about to pay off or that time spent inside out of the cold is going to come back and bite you, here is some of the early season action we can expect to see for LAPD Triathlon Date r Hawaii Ironman 11/010/2014 Annie Simmons Kirsten Gorman 70.3 Port Macquarie 19/10/2014 Michelle Wakka 25/10/2014 Eugene Irvin Michelle Wakka Robert Ellison Brian Worrell Peter Richards Challenge Forster 9/11/2014 Kevin Dixon Walter Brzica Terrie Hayter Tony Farrell Phil Tambasco Ann Eckert John Arakellian Debbie Henniker 70.3 Western Sydney 30/11/2014 Terrie Hayter Brian Worrell Kevin Dixon Busselton Ironman 07/12/2014 Michelle Wakka Debbie Henniker Kurnell 1 14/12/2014 Robyn Low-Hart Terrie Hayter When looking at you racing for the 2014/2015 season please keep in mind the following races the club is getting behind to support Goulburn Country Triathlon December 14 th 2014 (option to ride down on the Saturday) Hills Tri Club 5 1 st of February 2015 (twilight race, enduro format) Macarthur Tri Club 7 22 nd March 2015 Hawkesbury Tri Club TBC Tri NSW Club Champs 16 th May 2015 (entries open in January)

Swimming Time to get the LOST crew together and make the most of the beautiful beaches that Sydney has in abundance, the Island Challenge swim on the 23 rd of November offers a range of distances that will help you sharpen up your open water swimming skills and confidence, there is also a teams category where 4 swimmers times are combined to get the team time. Multisport After getting good reports about the Mud Run last December it might be worth giving this one some thought for 2014 (December 6 th ), less of a race and more of an event, could be a great way to get some non-triathletes involved in a club activity. Same weekend (Sunday December 7 th ) North Curl Curl S.L.S.C hold and aquathon with a difference, the 3 points challenge is an ocean swim and cross country run intertwined, with 3 x swims (300, 300 and 200) and 3 x runs (1500, 1000, 2500) in and around the Northern Beaches it has the making of a short, hard, heart and lung busting race in a very scenic part of Sydney Expect to be harassed and harangued on facebook about the above mentioned races.

LAPD Club Champion race points allocation To be eligible for that applicable place points (20% of available points for the race) in Huskisson Long, 70.3 Western Sydney, Ironman Australia, Nepean and Club Champs you need to wear club colours for either the run or bike leg, preferably both P-6000 maximum points only from the previous year s Kona Ironman race results With club champs a respectable time of year for everyone to compete it has been given the highest points allocation, it will be almost impossible to win without racing club champs, hopefully we can put in a much better showing this season and challenge for the Division 3 title.
