1 Hampshire Athletics leading athletics in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands HAMPSHIRE & IOW ATHLETICS DEVELOPMENT ANNUAL REPORT HAMPSHIRE ATHLETICS GENERAL Latest England Athletics data (March 2015) indicates that Hampshire Athletics comprises 52 Affiliated Clubs with 7,042 Club members (14 Track & Field, 4 Channel Island, and 34 Running Clubs). The Hampshire Clubs and Hampshire Schools structures remain the healthy lifeblood of our sport, and many Clubs are operating at record membership levels. All branches of the sport operated profitably in 2014, resulting in Hampshire Athletics reporting a surplus of approximately 1,400, with Funds held increasing to over 25,000. We benefitted from record entries in Hampshire Championship events, and an increase in Annual Club affiliation fees to 100 in Hampshire Athletics Development Funding beyond 1. Current Financial Position January 1 st 2015 c. 35,000 in Hampshire Athletics Development funds Hampshire Athletics Development Income/ Expenditure:- Calendar Year Income Expenditure , , , , , , , , , , Future Hampshire Athletics Development Funding Hampshire County Council Culture & Recreation Investment Fund - 8, awarded to Hampshire Athletics for 2015/16 There will be a reduction of 14% in the HCC grants budget by April 2017, with an anticipated further reduction of similar magnitude by 2020 due to continuing County Council cuts. England Athletics EA future priorities are likely to include Satellite Clubs, Run in England, Coaching (National and Local Coach Development Programmes), and Talent. Hopefully some project funds available? Saucony The Hampshire Athletics/ Saucony Partnership Agreement has been in place since 1 February (Saucony is the UK s fastest growing running brand). We had a positive meeting with Emma Roach, UK Marketing Manager, 15 January Hampshire Athletics submitted a formal Business Partnership proposal for 2015/19. Saucony main priority is the Saucony Hampshire Track & Field Grand Prix events. Dates for the 2015 Saucony Hampshire Grand Prix are:- 22 July, Basingstoke; and 23 August, Southampton. Wheel Chair races will be included at both events in conjunction with the Weir- Archer Academy. Saucony will appoint Hampshire based sports retailers. Thule MGC, Ian Byett & Barry Kitcher met Mike Torbitt, UK Finance Director, Thule and John Skevington, Leicestershire Network on 4 February Thule plan to stage a National Primary Schools Cross Country Championships in They are willing to invest in infrastructure in Hampshire to facilitate a Hampshire Primary Schools Championships (School Years 3,4,5,6) prior to a National event. Potential funding for Hampshire Schools AA to purchase equipment for use in all future events - stakes/ tape/
3 start/ finish/ chip timing? Hampshire Athletics to look at potential commercial funding (car parking charges, burger vans, photography etc.). Club Funding Proposed option Hampshire Track & Field Clubs to raise funds for Hampshire Athletics Development work through introduction of Club members paying subscriptions by monthly Direct Debit (Basingstoke & Mid Hants have introduced this). If the Clubs implement this, we would seek a levy of 50p per member a month not an unreasonable a week ( 6 annually) per member to run the County Development work. This would replace current 100 Club annual affiliation fee to Hampshire Athletics? Plan to implement 1 January Hampshire Athletics Development & Business Plan A Plan was submitted as part of our Hampshire County Council submission. Participation/ Income from Hampshire Athletics events There have been significant increases in participation in all Hampshire Athletics organised events in recent years, largely attributable to development work in the County/ Clubs: Saucony Hampshire Cross Country Championships 603* Saucony Hampshire Quad Kids Championships Saucony Hampshire Multi Events Championships Saucony Hampshire Track & Field Championships *Cancelled snow! +Under 11s included 1 st time as Championship event Hampshire Cross Country League participation:- 2011/ / / /15 Number of Race finishers:- 2,922 3,122 3,328 3, COMPETITION 2.1 Saucony Hampshire Championships 24/25 May 2014, Portsmouth 724 athletes competed in an excellent competition with 11 Championship Best Performances. There was a record entry of 92 for the Multi Events Championships, with 89 U11s in the Quad Kids competition. The newly introduced Track Mile and 3000m events both attracted good fields we aim to further develop in Schools Games 20 June 2014, Aldershot The Hampshire Schools Track Knock Out Finals are now established into the afternoon programme of the Hampshire Games Multi-Sport Festival, alongside the inclusive (Parallel) competition. In 2014 a Schools Quad Kids competition was introduced. The Year 7&8 Championships, Basingstoke - 15 July 2014 attracted c.900 athletes. 2.3 English Schools Championships 11/12 July 2014, Birmingham Hampshire Schools athletes achieved 14 medals (3 Gold, 8 Silver, 3 Bronze) at the 2014 English Schools Championships. Gold medallists were:- Holly Mills JG LJ, Oliver Bromby IB 100m, Owen Richardson IB 400m; Silver medals to:- Kai Mumford JB Hammer, Josie Czura JG 1500m, Ellie Hodgson JG Shot, Andrew Douglas IB PV, Devon Brimecombe IG 300mH, IG 4x 400m, Sam Adams SB LJ, Fiona Brown SG Shot; Bronze medals:- Richard Allen SB 3000m, Emma Cowell SG HJ, Amber Try SG PV. Hampshire Schools had an unprecedented 94 athletes achieving qualifying standards for these Championships. With the maximum team size of 60 athletes, there was a need to manage the disappointment of 34 Hampshire Schools athletes, coaches, parents. Other Counties had experienced similar high numbers of qualifiers. There are proposed adjustments to qualifying standards in 2015, particularly in the light of weight reductions to throwing implements for U15/ U17 Girls. 2.4 UK School Games 4-7 September 2014, Manchester A number of Hampshire athletes successfully represented the South West Regional teams in the 2014 Sainsburys UK School Games. Oliver Bromby, Southampton & Owen Richardson, Basingstoke achieved Gold medals in the 100m, 400m & 4x 400m. Sophie Merritt, Southampton attained a bronze in the Discus. 2.5 SLD Athletics Festival, 4 June 2014, Portsmouth
4 The Athletics Festival for children with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) was successfully switched indoors due to poor weather conditions. 124 athletes from 9 Special Schools took part. 2.6 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 27 July- 3 August 2014 Hampshire athletes performed with distinction at the Commonwealth Games - Isobel Pooley, Aldershot achieved a silver medal with 1.92m in the High Jump. Isobel then broke the UK record with 1.96m at the Hochsprung meeting in Eberstadt, Germany. 2.7 European Championships - Zurich, Switzerland August Andy Vernon, Aldershot performed exceptionally at the European Championships, gaining a silver medal in the 10,000m, and bronze in the 5000m behind Mo Farah. 2.8 Saucony Hampshire Grand Prix Basingstoke 16 July; Southampton 31 August 2014 Two highly successful 2014 Saucony Hampshire Grand Prix events were held, at Basingstoke (360 athletes 106 Personal Bests); and Southampton (116 PBs from 350 competitors). A Quad Kids competition was held in conjunction with the Doreen Old Southampton meeting and attracted 51 athletes. All event winners in different age- groups received T Shirts, and 5 performances from each Grand Prix were deemed Outstanding and eligible for Saucony footwear prizes. Saucony appointed Absolute Running, Gosport and Up and Running, Eastleigh as sports retailers at the events. 2.9 Sports Hall The Hampshire Sports Hall League continues to thrive with c. 200 athletes at each of the matches, and a full complement of Officials. The Under 11 Regional competition took place at the Olympos Centre, Burgess Hill on 11 January 2015 in a very tough competition the U11 Girls finished 5 th and U11 Boys 8 th. The U13/U15 competition was at the same venue on 22 February, with Hampshire finishing 2 nd from 7 Counties in all 4 age- groups a superb result considering the South East Region is the strongest in the UK. Ellie Hodgson, Southampton A.C. won the U15G All- Rounder competition, and will compete at the National Sports Hall Finals at Sports City, Manchester on 26 April to defend her National title Cross Country The Hampshire Cross Country League continued to attract magnificent support in , with a significant increase in finishers in the 5 matches (763, 745, 696, 621, 584) at Farley Mount, Goodwood, Popham, Prospect Park & Kings Park. 3,409 overall finishers in represented a 2% increase in participation over numbers. Runners have increased by 17% since 2011/12! The Saucony Hampshire County Championships, Fleming Park, 3 January 2015 The Hampshire County Cross Country Championships at Fleming Park, Eastleigh attracted a record entry of 918 in some very high quality races entries have steadily increased from 559 in 2011, reflecting the development work being undertaken in Hampshire Clubs, and inclusion of U11 events. Hampshire Clubs and County resident athletes put in some outstanding performances at the Saucony English National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill, London 21 February Mahamed Mahamed (U17 Men) and Lily Partridge (Senior Women) won their respective races. Additionally, Luke van Oudshoorn (U13B), Louise Small (SW), Zakariya Mahamed (U15B) achieved silver medals; with Amelia Willis (U13G) attaining a bronze medal. Aldershot, Farnham & District gained a tremendous 7 team medals:- Gold in SW, U20W, U17W, U15G & U13B; Silver in U17M; and Bronze in U20M. There were some excellent individual and Hampshire team performances at the UK CAU Inter- Counties Championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham on 7 March Zak Mahamed (U15B) and Mahamed Mahamed (U17M) achieved gold medals; Louise Damen (SW) and Josie Czura (U15G) gained silver medals; Hampshire SW and U15G also finished 2 nd County; with Hampshire U15B and U20W teams winning bronze medals London Mini Marathon 13 April 2014 The South East Regional team were overall winners of the London Mini Marathon with 11 Hampshire Club representatives Track & Field League Competition
5 Hampshire Clubs had mixed 2014 Track & Field seasons in National and Regional League competition. Both Basingstoke and Southampton were promoted from Division 2 to Division 1 for the 2015 BAL League. Southampton were relegated from the UKWL Premier League, Portsmouth were relegated to Division 3 in the UKWL, and Aldershot are no longer in the UKWL. Southampton were selected to attend the UK Youth Development League Finals at Birmingham, 6 September 2014 finishing 6 th from 8 teams in the U13/ U15 age- group. Portsmouth finished as Champions in their UKYDL Division. 3. COACHING 3.1 National and Local Coach Development Programmes (NCDP/ LCDP). 14 Hampshire & IOW coaches now attend the England Athletics NCDP. The Local Coach Development Programme managed by Christine Benning for Hampshire, South Surrey and Berkshire continues its success with regular, well- attended coaching workshops. 3.2 County Coaching Days Two Hampshire Athletics Coaching Days have been held. The first day took place at Portsmouth on 20 September, and was attended by c.50 athletes and 15 coaches. Some new athletes (from Hampshire Schools competitions) attended and were linked to Clubs. Similar numbers of athletes & coaches attended the second day at Andover on 29 November, which focussed on Physical Preparation and Strength Conditioning. The third Coaching Day is scheduled for 21 March 2015 at Winchester Stadium, with an emphasis on 2015 Track & Field season preparation. 3.3 Coach Education Hampshire & IOW have successfully hosted a whole range of England Athletics Coach Education programmes in 2014/15, including Athletics Leader, Assistant, Coach, and Leadership in Running Fitness courses, with Clubs needing to increase capacity to meet the influx of new athletes. Bursaries have been offered to support many of the coaches. 4 EDUCATION Hampshire Athletics continues to support Hampshire Schools AA and the 10 Schools Districts organisation to stage a number of events. We work with 14 School Games Organisers (SGOs) and 11 College Sport Makers to continue the good work in Hampshire Schools athletics. There are current discussions with SGOs to stage a County Primary Schools Cross Country Championships. NB each of the 430 Primary School Head Teachers in Hampshire are currently in receipt of 9,000 annual Primary Premium funds ring-fenced for sport provision. 5 OFFICIALS 5.1 Officials Evenings The 9 th Annual Hampshire Officials Evening was held at the Maidenwell Pavilion, Basingstoke on Friday 28 March The guest speaker was Malcolm Rogers (Chair of UKA Technical Advisory Group), with 65 Officials in attendance. The 2015 event is scheduled for 20 th March with Cherry Alexander MBE from UKA as guest speaker. 6 DISABILITY ATHLETICS 6.1 Wheel Chair Racing The Portsmouth Wheel Chair Race Group was launched in September 2014, and now meets weekly on Tuesday evenings. 3 adult athletes attended the first taster session, with Eden Rainbow from Portchester School. Job King, UKA led a launch workshop on 20 September, with Jenny Archer (David Weir s coach) leading 3 inspirational Flying Coach sessions 27 th September, 30 th November & 8 March to assist the development of the group in the early stages. 7 GENERAL 7.1 Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme (HTAS) Over 50 Hampshire athletes made successful applications to the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme (HTAS). The scheme is funded by Hampshire County Council and attracted over 250 applicants across all sports. All successful athletics applicants demonstrated the requisite top 15 Power of 10 ranking, in
6 conjunction with the necessary performances in National or International Championships. This Hampshire County Scheme provides support services to help Hampshire s most talented athletes reach World Class podiums:-olympics, Paralympics, World Championships. Support services include:- free access to leisure centres, discounted physiotherapy, free bus travel cards, sport science support and financial grants. 7.2 Hampshire & IOW Sports Awards 25 March 2015 St Mary s Stadium A number of nominations were submitted against the various Award categories for athletes, coaches, officials, and several have been shortlisted for Awards. 7.3 Social/ Recreational Running Nearly 900 new runners had registered on the Run England portal by September 2014 (over 350 are now Club members). Katharine Jones is continuing her work with Hampshire Council with new beginner groups not linked to Hampshire Clubs. 7.4 parkrun There are now 12 weekly parkruns in Hampshire & IOW (3 in Country Parks) with 36,000 registered runners in the County. A trial run was held on 7 February 2015 on a proposed Lee-on-Solent promenade course for a new parkrun in Gosport. Likely launch in late Spring Jersey Island Games Jersey are hosting the 2015 Island Games at FB Fields, St Helier (27 June- 3 July). Preparations are at an advanced stage, with track refurbishment complete. Hampshire Athletics will be providing the majority of Officials.
