1 Hello Fall... Bring On Chicago By Zach Lewis LRRC President The pumpkin spice season (also known as fall) is finally here! After months and months of high heat and humidity, we finally get a reprieve. For me, this has been one of the toughest summers, as I (and others) have been training for the Chicago Marathon. I ve been running around 15 years and completed several marathons, but this has been the first time I ve actually had any semblance of training, let alone training for a race in the early fall. I ve never really known what to do, and in the past just loaded up on mileage. I would regularly run miles a week, made up of mostly multiple 12 mile days per week, with my longest run being only one16-mile trek, typically two weeks before the marathon. This time, I ve been a little more educated on what to do mileage-wise and made sure to include several long runs. Those mornings of getting to the River Trail at 7 a.m. for a 20-mile run were brutal. It felt like running while being wrapped in a wet, wool, electric blanket, surrounded by multiple floating space heaters. While I carried water, it felt like I couldn t get New Members Rob Holifield Chris Yarberry Rose Ann Foster Todd Greer Sarah Testa enough to drink and saw mirages of large bottles of Gatorade everywhere... OK, that last part is exaggerated. Those long runs give you plenty of time to think, and I was doing my best to distract myself from the heat and distance I had left. It got me to thinking about running and how it relates to daily life. There are days and moments like that where you really have to dig deep and push through. The quotes Pain is temporary. Pride lasts forever., and Tough times never last, but tough people do. all seem so cliché, but they do ring true. At times, things just aren t easy and can be difficult to get through, but we can t quit. We have to keep pushing, get past those obstacles in front of us and strive for that goal whatever it may be. Maybe we fail trying to reach that goal and have to go back to the drawing board, but we keep at it. Perhaps that training run or race didn t go as well as planned but let that just be another log placed on the fire to stoke the flame. Several local runners will be making the trek to Chicago for the marathon in just a few short days. For me, this will be my first trip to Chicago and my first time to participate in this race, so I m looking forward to taking in the environment and atmosphere. I ve heard so many good things, from the course to the crowd, not to mention the city itself. While several of us have different goal in mind, we re doing it all 26.2 of it. Good luck to everyone running it with me. May your feet be light and swift. *** Besides the regular monthly Club meeting on Monday, October 15 there are two more fun Club activities in October. Nick and Lisa Rule are hosting a potluck dinner at their home at 1923 Kavanaugh from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, October 14. On Saturday October 27 from 6-9 p.m. there will be Halloween party/ potluck at 1017 N. Filmore, the home of Neil Masangkay and Rachel Slotcavage. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in costume but it isn t required. 2 2 The Runaround Member Spotlight - Amanda Land Name: Amanda Land Age: 32 Nicknames: ADL and AL Where are you originally from: I am originally from Fayetteville, AR. Where are you living now? I have been living in Little Rock since 2009 and central Arkansas since Occupation: Attorney Where did you attend school? I graduated from Fayetteville High School, then went to the University of Central Arkansas for my undergraduate degree. I attended UALR Bowen School of Law for law school. How long have you been a Little Rock Roadrunner? I joined the Roadrunners last November, but really started attending runs in May of this year. What got you into running? I started running when I was in seventh grade. During PE one day we had to run/walk Attn: Bikers & Runners By Ken Gould Twenty-five years ago five courageous but now unsung citizens of Central Arkansas brought successful lawsuits and a vote of the electorate that prevented the extension of Rebsamen Park Road to Highway 10. The result of their actions saved the Arkansas River Trail and made possible the Two Rivers, Big Dam and Clinton bridges and other bicycling and running amenities that significantly improved the quality of life and environment for all of us today. On October 10 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Ron Robinson Theater in the River Market those five community heroes will be honored and the exciting even to date not generally known, but surprising events of will be told by those who were actually involved. Please help spread the word of the October 10 event and encourage bicyclists, runners (including members of their organizations) and others who value the River Trail, the bridges and related amenities to attend by forwarding this message to all who might possibly be interested. On behalf of the Stop the Road - Save the River Parks tribute program, thank you very much! (Editor s Note: Ken Gould is a board member and former chair of Bicycle Advocacy of Central Arkansas, Little Rock Bicycle Friendly Community Committee, and Big Dam Bridge Foundation.) one mile. For whatever reason, I felt like running the whole mile with not much history of running at all. The PE teacher also happened to be the cross country coach for our junior high and high school, and he invited me to start running with the team. I have been running ever since then. What is your favorite distance? Right now, I like racing 5Ks. When I have a little more endurance, I really like the half marathon. Do you have a favorite race? I have only just started to get back into racing on a consistent basis, but I really enjoyed the CASA half marathon when I ran it a couple of years ago. Is there a favorite race story? I ran the Outback in the Ozarks relay last year with a team of good friends. My third run was scheduled to start around 4 a.m. at Lake Fort Smith. By that point, I had only about two hours of sleep and had already run two previous legs. I was honestly wondering how I was going to make it through that final run. Not to mention, the temperature was hovering around 25 degrees. My route was to run about a two-mile incline out of the park (I think the elevation was a climb of 650 feet over the first two miles.) and then six miles downhill to the next town. I got myself up and just focused on putting one foot in front of the other and ran out of the park and made it up the two-mile incline and somehow managed to make it the entire eight miles. I have never been so tired in my life, but finishing the race was very rewarding. Anytime I need some motivation, I think back to that race to help me power through. Favorite quote? Failure is not the opposite of success. It s part of success. Favorite music to run to? If I listen to anything I listen to podcasts. I usually listen to true crime podcasts. The Runaround is published electronically each month by the Little Rock Roadrunners Club, POBox , Little Rock, AR The deadline for copy is the 25th of the month for publication in the next month s issue. 3 Running And Community - In Lonoke The Runaround 3 By Alyssa Frisby People laugh when I tell them that I run because I m not coordinated enough to play any other sport. Running is my team sport; it is my way to meet new people and make new friends. When I moved from Little Rock to Lonoke a few years ago, I needed a way to connect with my new community. I heard that the local Women Run Arkansas run/walk clinic was looking for leadership and I thought that would be a great place to start because of my experience as a Girls on the Run coach and group fitness instructor. During my first two seasons with the Lonoke Women Run Arkansas clinic, I often heard from participants that they really wanted to continue their training through the summer and be prepared to participate in the local Great 5K Pumpkin Run that the Open Arms Shelter hosts every year. I decided that I would volunteer to lead two group runs every week for 10 weeks to get the Lonoke community excited for this year s race. The Great 5K Pumpkin Run is part of the Grand Prix Series this year and I really wanted a strong showing of Lonoke residents to come out to the event. I was hopeful that many of the women from the spring Women Run Arkansas clinic would show up to the weekly Tract Tuesday evening runs and for the early morning Thursday group runs. I was not disappointed. They are highly motivated ladies, and the number one reason I volunteer my time as a coach every year. Getting people who are new to walking or running to come out and participate had been my biggest challenge, and it has been incredibly important to me to present this training to the community as run and inclusive. It doesn t matter if you run or walk often or if this is your first time ever finishing a mile you re welcome at the track or on the road. When I started volunteering to coach a few years ago, I learned that the very best thing I could do for participants is just show up. People trust my leadership in running because I have a strong background in the sport, but it doesn t matter to them if I can run a six-minute mile or a 12-minute mile. They really just care that I ll be there when I say I will be, that I ll have a plan for them when they arrive, and that I bring plenty of water and cups. They don t care to be the first finishers of the race and every season have a new goal to work towards, and I think that is what makes our training group so much fun. I make awful jokes and take too many pictures, but we re all there to support each other during the workouts (which, sometimes no one wants to do) and outside the training. We re excited to welcome Roadrunners and Grand Prix runners to our little Lonoke race this year. I hope you found it to be flat and fast, and you took a minute to congratulate one of the locals on a great race. ARK 5K Classic Race Recap By Natosha Crisco I used to start my race mornings in a very methodical way. I got ready, ate my food, warmed up and nervously awaited the gun. My last few races have been a little different. I have had the privilege of riding hours in a crowded car with other runners, talking strategy, old racing stories, injuries (current and present), training schedules, and maybe some things that we would rather not leave the car. Honestly, I don t remember what racing was like before being part of this team. The ARK 5K Classic on September 1 st was my third race as a member of the LRRC. It was a hot, humid morning. I remember sweating before I even got out of my car! Although I have spent many training hours along part of its course, this was my first time to run this particular race. My race plan was to start around a 6:50 mile pace and try to hold it until the end. This plan had worked a few weeks before at the Watermelon 5K in Hope. I wasn t even a mile into the race when I knew this plan wasn t going to work. My first mile was a little fast (per usual) at 6:46. I really felt the heat hit me during the second mile and ended up having to slow down to marathon pace of 7:24. I was able to pick it back up to 7:17 during the third mile, but it wasn t enough to keep another female from passing me in the last stretch of the race. I usually have a final kick, but on that particular Saturday I didn t have a thing left in the tank during that stretch, finishing at 22:01. I usually would beat myself up over letting someone pass me that late in a race, but I saw so many of my teammates at the finish line and those feelings quickly faded away. Shortly after crossing the finish line I learned that our very own Carli Langley WON the race in 18:30. That little speed demon! Laura Kerns set a new personal record, breaking 21 minutes for the first time. She crossed the finish line in 20:58 for a fifth place finish and first in her age group. We had two other top five finishers with Jennifer Found snagging third female overall, and Sarah Olney taking first Masters as if she stole it! To no surprise, the guys did their thing too. It was a good day all around for the men and women Roadrunners teams. Both teams took 20 points for the race and are currently sitting at the top of the scoreboard for teams. Let us hope we can both keep up the good work and win out! A little side note: I am still getting the hang of this Roadrunners thing and I love every second of it. Thanks to Colin Hall for harassing me until I joined, and thanks to the rest of you for having me on your team! Slipping on my green singlet has brought new meaning to this runner s racing.

The warmer temperatures and humidity continued to hover around Little Rock the morning of the race, but that did not stop strong performances from all of the runners and teams involved. The race was organized by our very own Bill Torrey. It is the only cross country race in the Grand Prix Series, and it was an excellent start to the cross country season. The race contained both an open division, as well as an invitational division for high school and junior high runners. For some, it was an introduction into cross country racing. For others, it was a reminder of cross country races past. National Guard personnel were there to assist with directing traffic on the course, along with many other volunteers. The race was much different than the road races we typically run in the Grand Prix Series it was run entirely on the grass. The course was a loop and a half around the Western Hills Golf Course, with plenty of refreshments along the way. The course was fairly flat, with only some minor hills. The race started in an open field, where the runners chuted into a mowed path into the golf course. After the half mile mark, the runners started their first main loop. The runners continued to repeat the loop just before the two-mile mark, before taking a slight run up the hill into the finish chute. Overall, the course was a technical one, but saw some good competition and racing among our local running community. Our first place finishers included: Brian Sieczkowski first overall male 18:15.45 Carli Langley first overall female 19:16.87 Sarah Olney first masters 22:07.09 Kathleen Rea first grand masters 24:56.71 Bill Rahn first senior 25:19.01 Natosha Crisco first :31.00 Congratulations to everyone who finished!
