Were you any good in any other sports before you decided to specialize in running. Before running, I competed in Basketball and was passionate about skateboarding/cycling. Running began for me when I was 15 years old. My father invigorated my passion for our sport with stories about his running days with prolific US Distance Runners like Don Norman and Joe Thomas who were both native to Western Pennsylvania, USA. In college, I was educated at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania where I competed in cross country and track/field. During college, I became passionate about training on hilly concrete and dirt roads in Western Pennsylvania at a workload of K per week. The sport became the essence of who I was at that time. My best friends were my college teammates. The bonds I've formed with those individuals are very dear memories. After college, I took 3 years away from the sport to pursue playing percussion and strings instruments in ragtime/jugband/jazz groups. The sport drew me back in 2013 when I began to train seriously again for my first half marathon. I raced my first half in 2013 in Orlando Florida, finishing in 1:06.13 My first marathon was in 2015, where I raced 2:20.06 in Georgia, USA. 3. Then I also want to know what made you decide to do ultra-races? Is it a case of more is better? The ultrarunning culture is beautiful to me. I enjoy the atmosphere at both road and trail races. Ultarunners are in the struggle of event completion and achieving personal goals together, even when racing one another...much like The Comrades Marathon where 20,000 of us will battle one another, yet form a personal bond with one another at the same time. In the spring of 2015, I became interested in ultrarunning. My good friend Andrew Snope and I were employed at a pedicab/tricycle taxi company together in At the time we were both getting back into running after taking a break from the sport. He began racing 100 Mile, 100K, 50 Mile, 50K races in He originally introduced me to these competitions. In the spring/summer of 2015, I began racing 1/2 Marathon and 50K trail races. I did some long 6-7 hour training sessions in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. My Sunday long runs became miles on weekends. In early 2016, I concentrated on the USA Olympic Trials Marathon after qualifying with 1:04.29 in the half marathon, My focus then quickly shifted concentration to the USA 100K National Championships. In the Summer of 2016, I was fortunate to experience the UltraVasan 90K Trail Race in Mora, Sweden. My breakout performance was last year at the IAU 100K World Championships in Spain where I represented Since the world championship, I have been concentrating on Comrades. 4. What do enjoy about running? Some people said that through running they get a new perspective on life. Running is a very personal activity for me. I enjoy stepping out the door every day to experience the challenges of training while exploring beautiful places on foot. I enjoy listening to my breathing, the sound of my feet on the pavement/trail, and the sounds of nature around me. Running has helped me to develop my persona, confidence, and character. The act of running brings me peace. I enjoy exploring the Appalachian Mountains and more recently the Beautiful Northern Californian trails with friends. The act of running makes the world our playground and our outlet for mental/physical well-being. 5. What made you decide that you want to race the Comrades? What do you know about the race? And what goal did you set for yourself running the Comrades. I believe this years modo, "It Takes All Of You," is an accurate assessment of my attraction to Comrades. Comrades has been described to me by friends as an unforgettable experience. The thought of lining up to race with 20,000 ultrarunners gives me chills. The up year will be extremely challenging for all, but I will embrace the challenge with pride and excitement to share in the experience with fellow ultrarunners.

19 1) Having only taken up running in my mid 30 s I was quite late to the sport but realised quite early on that I had some hidden talent as within 3 years of training seriously I had managed to get my marathon time under 2:20 and been selected to represent England in a low key international marathon team competition in Toronto, Canada. Highlights since then have included - Winning the World 50K championships in Italy Winning the Stockholm 100K on my debut over the distance in UK 100K champion in 2014 breaking the British Road record in the process - Breaking the British Veteran Marathon record at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to secure 10th place. - Breaking the World Veteran 40 mile track record in Barry, Wales (2016) - Winning the Wings for Life World Run UK edition in th place at Ultravasan 90K 2016 (Not that impressive but I am terrible at trail running so I was pleased!) My PB s include. Marathon - 2:15:16 (Still current British Vet Record) 50KM - 2:53:41 40Miles - 3:54:52 (Still current World V40 Age Best) 100KM - 6:19:20 (Still current British Road Record) 2) I was never very sporty at school or early adult life. In fact I was very unhealthy and unfit with bad eating habits, drinking and smoking. When I was 33 I decided I needed to turn my life around, lose weight and stop smoking and looked to running to help me achieve all of those goals. Lucky for me, not only did it succeed in doing those things but I also realised I had a massive passion and talent for running which would evolve into the competitive sport it has for me now. 3) After an unsuccessful London Marathon campaign in 2013 where I had to pull out very early in the race due to an injury, I felt I needed a new challenge to keep me motivated in the sport and thought I would give the 100KM event a go. Having already done a couple of 50K races I knew that I was reasonably comfortable running beyond 42KM but this would be the real test. After winning the Stockholm 100KM that summer in 6:40:14 with my first attempt at the distance I haven t looked back, realising that I m at my competitive best when I m running further than marathon distances. 4) Running allows me to be a competitive sportsman. An obvious statement but something that I never thought would be in the case when I was an unfit 30yr old overweight smoker. I love the adrenaline and excitement of race day and all my running is done to allow me to be as good as I can be on those special race days. 5) It s quite simple really, I m a road Ultra runner so I need to be a part of the most competitive road ultra race in the world. My main goal is to get into the best shape I can and do myself proud on race day. I would obviously love to end up in the Top 10 as that is such a prestigious achievement but as long as I come away from my first Comrades run with a strong run I will be happy.
