I m a familiar face at all the local running events since moving to Lompoc 13 years ago. Many times, I am the only walker. I m Lompoc s most famous street walker having walked every street in the area. Before moving to Lompoc, I was the VP of the Inside Track Running club of Ventura. I was a runner for about 15 years until my knees gave out and have been fitness walking ever since. My husband Juan and I have run a marathon on all 7 continents. I have big running shoes to fill in succeeding Wayne Davis. Thanks, Wayne! And thanks for your service as prior President of the LVDC. The monthly newsletter is all about you our membership; it is not just a list of upcoming races and results. Share photos and/or articles if you have participated in an activity or adventure that we may want to read about. If you come across any fun facts related to sport, or healthy tips, pass them on. Our newsletter editor, Larry Huyck, is waiting to receive these items. The inaugural LVDC membership challenge is a new program that the club officers hope will be fun, exciting, and motivating (see more details inside the newsletter). The Resolution Run on January 1 at River Bend Park was one local event to jump start your new year of healthy activity. (continued on page 4)

3 SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13, :00 AM.SANTA MARIA FIT- NESS SERIES. SANTA MARIA YMCA, 3400 SKYWAY DR. SANTA MARIA This event has a 5K $23, a 10K $29, and a Kids Dash $3. The fees will increase on Jan. 12th and on Jan 8th for the Kids Dash. Forty percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Santa Maria YMCA. This event will start and end at the Santa Maria YMCA. Parking will be at the YMCA as well. Parking is free! Please arrive by 8:00am. The opening ceremony will be from 8:15 to 8:45am. The Kids Dash will be held at 8:45am. The 5K will start at 9am (sharp). The 10K will start at 9:30am (sharp). There will be a free after-race party that will be held from 10am to 12 noon (everyone is welcome). We will see the 18th anniversary of this great meditative run through the hills and meadows of historic Camp Roberts Army National Guard Reservation in north San Luis Obispo County along the fertile Salinas River Valley. Marathon and half marathon to begin at 8:00 AM, 6:30 for walkers; 8:30 for 10k and 5k; 8:45 for Children under age 12 Mile Course closes at 3:00 pm. Chapel Service available at 7:00 near start line presented by long time Buzz runner Ben Walker. Child care available if we know ahead to secure volunteers. Museum and Annex open for browsing as well as some vehicle displays for climbing & photo ops. Chip timing by SYNERGY RACE TIMING Vehicle support available along course route and at most aide stations supported by the Camp Roberts Fire Department with back up by the San Miguel Volunteer Fire Department. Starting at 620 above sea level the course goes out and back rising to 977. It is quiet and serene with wildlife spectators, spectacular views, training and research sites; aid stations and porta potties every 2 miles. {mile 2 (use the gym), 4.2, 6, 8.2 (half marathon turn around), 10, 12, 14, and 14.9 (full marathon turn around) manned by parents, students, and alumni} Funds raised support Lillian Larsen School Athletics. This get together is always filled with laughter, fun, camaraderie, and of course, yummy food. Newcomers don t be shy and join us. GET UP! GET DRESSED! GET GOING! 5 MY TOUGHEST RACE The following item was submitted for this fairly new feature. Julie and Juan Campos, who have done marathons, half marathons, whatever they find interesting all over the world. Recently they ran in Alaska and Iceland. Following is their list of tough races. What was our hardest races? Juan and Julie Campos. Their hardest marathon was the Antarctica Marathon. Half Marathon was the Valley of Flowers Half. The Laguna Peak Challenge 5K, Pt Mugu, CA (ascending 1300 ft.) They couldn t think of any 10K s that were challenging. MY TOUGHEST RACE What is the toughest race you have ever run or walked and WHY? Write it up and submit it to the Lompoc Valley Distance Club Newsletter. Use lompocvalleydistancclub@gmail.com to submit it. The stories we receive will be published in a future publication. If you don t have access to the internet just write it out and mail it to LVDC, P.O. Box 694, Lompoc, CA CONTEST ALERT!!! the LVDC Challenge needs a title. 6 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, :00 AM. CARPINTE- RIA WINTER WARM UP 5K RUN/WALK. CARPIN- TERIA BLUFFS. Carpinteria Winter Warm Up 5K Run/Walk - Sunday, February 18th, 2018 is a trail run on the Carpinteria Bluffs, this event is the perfect run for both the elite and beginning runner. The run takes place on well marked trails through the Pacific Ocean Eucalyptus Trees and Southern California coastal shrub with the blue of the Pacific Ocean providing a breathtaking view for this event. With slight elevations changes, this run could provide a PR for any runner. Join us in supporting the Carpinteria High School Track & Field Team. This race is part of the Santa Barbara Athletic Association Grand Prix Series. This event starts at 8 AM. Day of race registration is available.. The fees for the Winter Warm Up are as follows: 5K (adult) $25; youth K $22; Youth 10 and Under 5k $15; and Junior Grand Prix (ages 18 and under) $10. The link below will take you to the registration site: SATURDAY, MARCH 3, :00 AM. HARES N HOUNDS 5K AND FUN RUNS. ATASCADERO LAKE PARK. This event is comprised of a 5K (8 AM), a one miler (8:45 AM) and a 1/2 mile (9 AM). Hares N Hounds 5K and Fun Runs is a fundraiser for the Atascadero Greyhound Foundation. The 5K course is a certified loop run that starts and finishes at the same spot at the Atascadero Lake. The first and last miles of the 5K are around the lake and therefore pretty flat. The second mile of the 5K is somewhat hilly. The 1-Mile and 1/2-Mile runs are out and back from the same start as the 5K. The 5K course is well marked. There are no road closures so good traffic awareness is important. The 5K awards are hand made ceramic medals to the top three in each male and female age group (5 year increments). Special awards for top male and top female for Atascadero High School alumni. 5K course records are: Men 14:38, and Women 17:05. For the one mile and 1/2 mile participants medals for all finishers. There will be a great raffle for all participants. Fees: 5K $30, one mi and 1/2 mi $15. Add $10 for a T-shirt. Fees increase in about 40 days. For more info contact: runninrobyn@gmail.com Register at ACTIVE.COM. SATURDAY MARCH 24, :00 AM. 18TH AN- NUAL DR. JOHN C. TRET- TIN MEMORIAL 5K RUN AND NATURE WALK. CABRILLO HIGH SCHOOL, LOMPOC. This race was established to honor the memory of John Trettin, a local doctor, coach, father, husband, and friend, who was tragically killed while bicycling in the summer of Funds raised go to scholarships for local graduating seniors. This race starts and finishes at the Cabrillo High School Track, 4350 Constellation Road. Participants of the Run and Nature Walk are encouraged to use provided bags and gloves to keep the course clean as they enjoy their surroundings. Registration begins at 8 AM and is day of only. Entry fees: $10 ($8 for LVDC members) and $5 for 18 and under ($4 for LVDC members 18 and under). Awards are three deep for male and female in eleven divisions and overall male and female plaques. Free raffle prizes will also be awarded to race participants. Limited edition shirts will be available for purchase on race day. It was lead by Parker Grand a Park Aide Interpreter and a LVDC member. The weather was perfect for a hike up to the upper loop. The awards go to those who placed in the Resolution Run on January 1, 2018 at River Bend Park.
