The Nancy Perry Scholarship submissions were reviewed by the club officers and applicants from Cabrillo and Lompoc High Schools were chosen. Scholarship recipients will be named in a future issue. The next LVDC run is the Ray Gil and Alan Hunt Mission Memorial 5K/10K Run/Walk on May 12. The next LVDC potluck will be on June 10. See the newsletter or visit the website for details regarding these events. The Valley of the Flowers Half Marathon has been cancelled this year due to dwindling numbers and sponsorships. In its place will be the Mission Trails 5K Run/Walk. This will be a challenging trail run with a brand-new course. Details will be forthcoming. Keep Calm and Move On! Julie Campos The June Issue of the Lompoc Valley Distance Club Newsletter will have a short bio for each of the winners of the Nancy Perry Memorial Scholarship. The awards night for Lompoc High is May 6 PM and for Cabrillo High is May 6 PM. Even though the Half Marathon has been canceled for this year the 5K trail run that will be held will still support the Nancy Perry Memorial Scholarship.

On site registration begins at 5:30pm. Swim starts at 6:20pm, run at 6:30pm About This Activity Nite Moves will be back for another fun and exciting season in 2018! Every Wednesday from May 2 through August 29 (except July 4) run, swim or do both (aquathon). Register for the full season or single Nite.. The regular full season price is ($450) Also, single Nite entries will be available for $25. RAY GIL AND ALAN HUNT MISSION ME- MORIAL 5K / 10K RUN- WALK, LA PURISIMA MIS- SION, LOMPOC. These events take place entirely within the La Purisima Mission. The courses are closed to vehicles and consist of blacktop, dirt and "some hills." They may be altered from previous years a little to insure they are accurate 5K and 10K distances. Both events will start at 9:00 AM. Registration will start at 8:00 to 9:00 AM in the Tule Village which is located northwest of the Visitor s Center approximately ¼ of a mile next to the large oak tree parallel to a service road. Entry Fees: Adults: 5K - $10 and 10K - $15. Children 17 & under: 5K - $5 and 10K - $10. (LVDC members receive a $2 discount) Awards will be given to male and female 1 st and 2 nd place winners for both distance events, There will be 8 age groups: 17 & under, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+. The after race refreshments will be the traditional Mothers Cookies started by the late Alan Hunt, plus fruit and water. 3 SATURDAY, MAY 12, SANTA BARBARA WINE COUNTRY HALF MARA- THON. SANTA YNEZ. Santa Barbara and the adjoining Santa Ynez Valley offer the ideal destination running experience. Held in early May on Mother s Day weekend, it s the perfect time to visit this haven for outdoor recreation. The area has plenty to offer including beach and ocean activities, hiking, biking and running trails, historic towns and missions, plenty of shopping and restaurant options, and an abundance of wineries and tasting rooms. And you ll LOVE this scenic course that runs from downtown Santa Ynez through Los Olivos into the Danish-settled town of Solvang. Bring your family and friends to enjoy a weekend full of activities in this bucolic setting and celebrate in style at the expanded post-race Wine & Music Festival in Solvang Park. Run the half marathon or the two-person relay. Form a team of six or more. Run with, or for, your mother. But be warned this race is habit forming and sells out early! See all the details and register at the following link WINE COUNTRY LVDC member Sarah Nemeth shares the following with the Distance Club about the Wine Country Half: I've been selected to be a race ambassador for Destination Races again this year and wanted to share the discount code with the club. Our local race is the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon on May 12th, but the code is good for their races all year. Everyone can save $10 using the code: DRAMBNEMETH. SATURDAY, MAY 19, :30 AM. BULL CANYON RUN, SANTA MARIA. The Bull Canyon Run began in This 5K & 10K Run/Walk is organized by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, whose goal is to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. This is one of the largest running events on the Central Coast, designed for individuals and families. We have t-shirts for everyone. Top Awards: top finisher in each age group receives a plaque. Age groups are in 5-year age groups starting at age 5. Overall champion in each race M/F receives a plaque. Top boy and girl in kids races get a plaque. Medals: Each 5 year age group has a gold, silver and bronze medal. The rest get a participation medal. First 3 finishers in the kid s race (boy and girl) get the gold, silver and bronze medal. The rest get participation medals. We encourage registration via active.com, but will accept paper applications up to May 16th. Special Olympians do not pay to participate in the Bull Canyon Run. They will need to contact the Special Olympic office in Santa Maria to register. 4 SUNDAY, MAY 27, :00 AM STRAW- BERRY STAMPEDE 5K & 10K RUN AND 5K WALK. ARROYO GRANDE. The Strawberry Stampede is a non-profit fundraising event to benefit youth activities in the South County. It is held on Sunday of the Memorial Holiday Weekend, at the same time as the Arroyo Grande Strawberry Festival. These courses are scenic routes through Arroyo Grande with registration (6:45 AM on Race Day), the start, and the finish all at the end of Short Street by the swinging bridge. Proceeds go towards Kiwanis community service projects. Awards are three deep in five-year age groups in each of the races along with refreshments and prize drawings. Contact is Erich Salas, K Run and Walk This is an out and back course which is relatively flat with a couple of slight hills at about 1.2 miles and just past the turn around point. The water station is at mile 2. 10K Run The 6.2 mile course starts and finishes in the Village of Arroyo Grande on Short Street behind the Swinging Bridge. The runners will leave the start/finish line and make their way out to Lopez Drive. A few small rolling hills getting out of the village and then a fast flat section across Huasna Road and back along Branch Mill Road through the village and back to the start/ finish area. Water stations at mile 3 and at mile 5. All participants and volunteers receive refreshments including our legendary loads of delicious, fresh, locally grown strawberries! Entry Fees: $25 w/out shirt and before May 18., $30 after that date. Under 14 years old are free. If you want a t-shirt it is $5 more. Use the link below to read all the details and to register on line. SATURDAY, JUN 2, 2018, 8:00 AM. LIGHTHOUSE ATASCADERO - 5K BENEFIT FUN RUN/WALK AND FAMILY DAY POMAR JUNCTION VINE- YARD & WINERY. TEMPLETON, CA Family Fun Day! The LIGHTHOUSE 5k Benefit Fun Run and Family Fun Day will feature an amazing race course for runners and walkers. Participants may choose to run or walk this challenging 5k course through the vineyard. There will be a kids 1/2 mile race following the finish of the 5k run as well as a 100 yard dash for those age 6 and under. Entry fees are Kids ½ mile - $5 and the 5K Run is $25.Entry fees are not refundable but are transferable. Enjoy the Family Activity Area: Bounce House, Face Painting, and Crafts. Stay for the raffle prizes, breakfast burritos and rock out to music from our DJ. The Pomar Junction Tasting Room will also be open to the public. 5 SUNDAY, JUNE 3 (8:00 A.M.) 25 TH MARIANNE TALLEY MEMORIAL 5K, 10K, 1- MILE WALK, & KID S MILE All races are run on a cross country course of scenic dirt roads and trails at Talley Vineyards, 3031 Lopez Drive in Arroyo Grande. Timing chips will be used for all 5K, 10K and, youth runners. Strawberries and other refreshments will be provided at the finish and there is a post-race raffle for all participants along with awards for age group place winners 3 deep in 14 divisions. Proceeds go towards a scholarship fund in memory of Marianne Talley for student athletes at Arroyo Grande High School. FEES; $35 5K run, 10K Run and 1-Mile Walk $25 1 mile youth run (ages 13 and under) After May 25 fees increase by $5. Pre Registration packet pickup on Saturday June 2 from 12 3 pm at Talley Vineyards. Race Day registration begins at 7:00 AM No Guarantees for shirts after May 28th, for late registration or registration on race day. Additional Information: AWARDS: Immediately following the Youth Mile RAFFLE: Bib Numbers will be drawn while you are out on the course. Check the Raffle Board when you complete your run to see if you won! Please, NO BABY JOGGERS, STROLLERS or DOGS on the course! 6 SATURDAY, JUNE 23, AM. FLOWER FESTIVAL PARADE ROUTE 1K KIDS RUN AND 3K RUN/WALK, LOMPOC, CA. 1K Kid s Run starts at 8:30 AM and 3K Run/ Walk at 9:00 AM. Start and finish in the Times Square Plaza parking lot at 511 North H Street next to PLUS Property Management. NOTE: Start/ Finish staging area and the shorter course distance of this event due to changes in start area of Parade floats/participants and hazards with the course around the shopping center. Registration starts at 7:30 AM. Preregistration not required but recommended for speedy check-in morning of event. Parking available approximately ½ block away in the Lompoc Plaza next to Vons s Gas Station located at North H & College Street. Entry fee: $5 for 1 K Kids Run and $10 for Adult Run/Walk ($2 discount for LVDC members). Age category awards for the 1K Kids Run are 5 and under, 6-8, and Age categories in the 3K Run are 12 and Under, 13-16, 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-79, and 80 Plus. Awards for 3K Walkers are 1 st & 2 nd Male & Female. Purpose of event is to raise research funds and awareness of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) - a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective gene. 100 Percent of entry fees will be donated in honor of 11-year-old Mallory Holloway. She was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis after her 2nd birthday. Her parents ran track: Matt for Lompoc High School, Allan Hancock, & Humboldt State University & Katrina for schools in Delaware & South Carolina University For more information or to volunteer, contact A.Lee & Wayne Davis at , alhwed@msn.com SATURDAY, JULY 14, :30 AM BRIAN WATERBURY ROCK TO PIER RUN 10K & ROCK AROUND THE PIER HALF MARATHON. MORRO BAY, CA Named in memory of Brian Waterbury who originated the race in 1970, this 10K (now in its 49th running)goes along the beach from the start at the rock in Morro Bay to the finish at the pier in Cayucos. Fees for the 10K is $35 plus $3 sign up fee. The price increases to $40 after June 15, and to $45 after June 30th. Participants will be bussed back to the rock for breakfast and awards ceremonies. Registration will open on April 30. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in 15 age divisions from 10 & under to 80 & over. Also the Rock'n Around the Pier Half Marathon will be in its 7th year. This 13.1 mile event is held on the hard packed sand with a challenging trip through soft sand to a 1 mile loop on a paved path (at 10.5 miles) return to the beach through the soft sand to the finish line at Morro Rock. Due to the tide, this course will close at 3 hours.. The half marathon is open to the first 300 participants. The fee for the Half is $75 plus $4.50 sign up fee. The fees increase to $85 on June 16 and to $95 on June 30th. Registration for both races includes a race t-shirt, finisher s medal, and breakfast at the pier. 7 SATURDAY, JULY 28, :00 AM. STRIDE WITH THE TIDE 5k. PISMO BEACH PIER The Location of this event is the Pismo Beach Pier. The Address is 101 Pomeroy Avenue Pismo Beach, CA. Contact # is This 5K race begins at 8:30 AM, with onsite registration only, from 7:15 AM-8:15 AM. Entry fees will be $15 without a race shirt and $25 with one. Shirts will be available for the first 120 racers, upon request. The course will be marked on the hard packed sand, starting and ending at the Pismo Beach Pier. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded to the top three men and women ages 12 & under, 13-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, & 80+. This event is conducted by the San Luis Distance Club. For more information, please contact the Pismo Beach Parks & Recreation Department. SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, :00 AM DUNE RUN RUN. RAMONA GARDEN PARK, GROVER BEACH. 30th Annual Dune Run Run Saturday, August 25, K/10K run/walk open to all ages. Held in conjunction with the AGGB Chamber of Commerce sponsored Stone Soup Music Faire. The race begins at 9:00 a.m. at Ramona Garden Park Center 993 Ramona Avenue and traverses city streets, beach boardwalk and hard and soft packed sand. Cost of the event is $25 prior to August 17, 2018 and $30 after that date. An awards ceremony will immediately follow the end of the race. 1 st and 2 nd place medals will be awarded for all age and gender categories. You can register on line or register on the day of the event starting at 7:00 AM. The online registration link will be available on June 1, 2018 and I will include it in this item in the June newsletter.
