The first of 4 annual potlucks was recently hosted by the Campos. It was, as usual, a fun gathering with familiar faces, a new member making an appearance, and yummy food. A club meeting was held afterwards. The Get Up and Go Challenge has been chosen by the club membership as the official name of the LVDC Challenge. Remember to send your race results to Larry Huyck. Along with the status of the upcoming club races, the main topic of discussion was the half marathon and its progress. And Save the Date for June 10 the next club potluck. This will be a very fun gathering as the format has been slightly changed. It will still be a potluck, but with a twist. I hope I have sparked your curiosity. Details will be forthcoming in a future newsletter. Keep Calm and Move On! GET UP! GET DRESSED! GET GOING! for the first annual LVDC challenge open to all LVDC members. To join is easy. Participate in a running event from Jan 1, 2018 thru Dec 31, 2018 and send your results to either Julie Campos or Larry Huyck. Include the name of the event, the distance, date, and your results with time and placing, if known. The more events you enter or volunteer for, the more points you will earn. It doesn't matter where you competitively run or walk: Lompoc, Los Angeles, Anchorage, or internationally. It s game-on. This event is comprised of a 5K (8 AM), a one miler (8:45 AM) and a 1/2 mile (9 AM). Hares N Hounds 5K and Fun Runs is a fundraiser for the Atascadero Greyhound Foundation. The 5K course is a certified loop run that starts and finishes at the same spot at the Atascadero Lake. The first and last miles of the 5K are around the lake and therefore pretty flat. The second mile of the 5K is somewhat hilly. The 1-Mile and 1/2-Mile runs are out and back from the same start as the 5K. The 5K course is well marked. There are no road closures so good traffic awareness is important. The 5K awards are hand made ceramic medals to the top three in each male and female age group (5 year increments). Special awards for top male and top female for Atascadero High School alumni. 5K course records are: Men 14:38, and Women 17:05. For the one mile and 1/2 mile participants medals for all finishers. There will be a great raffle for all participants. Fees: 5K $30, one mi and 1/2 mi $15. Add $10 for a T-shirt. Fees increase in about 40 days. SUNDAY MARCH 11, 2018 KENDRA S RACE TRIATHLON UCSB, CAMPUS POINT.In 2006, after the death of their teammate and friend, Kendra Payne, the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Triathlon Team changed the name of their annual triathlon to Kendra s Race. The race has been held every year since then and each year the UCSB triathlon team generously donates a portion of the entrance fees to the Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial Fund. The 11th annual Kendra's Race Sprint Triathlon and 5k run features a scenic course through Santa Barbara, Goleta and the University of California, Santa Barbara campus. With an 800 meter ocean swim, flat and fast 13 mile bike around the Santa Barbara airport, and a 5K run along the bluffs near the beach, this is sure to be a race you never forget! You can also just enter the 5K run which is $25. Your registration includes a FREE training plan up to race day to prepare you! Proceeds go to benefit the UCSB Triathlon Team and the Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial Fund. ALEX MADONNA EXPO CENTER. SLO. Project Teen Health (PTH) is a childhood obesity prevention program developed and operated by Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County, Inc. (CAPSLO). The mission of Project Teen Health is to reduce and prevent adolescent obesity by providing research-supported, innovative, culturally sensitive, and youth-driven programs. PTH serves youth at Arroyo Grande High School, Nipomo High School, Paso Robles High School and Santa Maria High School providing a variety of no-cost programs. Proceeds from the CHC Superhero 5k Run will provide scholarships for students in need who wish to participate in the program. Funds will cover the cost of gym memberships, athletic shoes, and field trips. The high school-based program offers after-school fitness classes, individual nutrition counseling, an on-campus nutrition club, and an annual health fair. Dress up as your favorite superhero and help fight teen obesiety at the CHC Superhero 5k Run! The SLO Health and Fitness Expo 5K takes you along the Highway 101 Bike Path up to Madonna Mountain & back up to the Alex Madonna Expo Center. This run affords you beautiful views of the hills and pastures of San Luis Obispo over a distance of 3.1 miles. The run begins and ends at the Alex Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo, CA; the race starts at 8:30am. You do not have to be a serious runner to participate; we encourage all walkers and runners who are comfortable on trails to come out to celebrate health and fitness while enjoying the healthy lifestyle fostered on the Central Coast. Registration will close March 16, but participants will be able to register day-of at the race beginning at 7:00 8:00 AM. Fees are $30 Feb 16-Mar pm. $35 on the day of the event. Parking will be at the YMCA as well. Parking is free! We will be holding 5K ($19), 10K ( $24)and a Kids Dash ($3). These prices are through February 28. Please arrive by 8:00am. The opening ceremony will be from 8:15 to 8:45am. The Kids Dash will be held at 8:45am. The 5K will start at 9am (sharp). The 10K will start at 9:30am (sharp). Forty percent of the net proceeds will be donated to the Santa Maria ValleyYMCA. There will be a free after-race party that will be held from 10am to 12 noon (everyone is welcome). Box 694, Lompoc, CA PREPARING TO RUN The Standard Warm-up is a dynamic flexibility and stretching routine that is done before you run. This series of light strength exercises and mobility drills help prepare your body to work harder.you don t need any equipment to perform this routine and it can be modified for use in a cramped hotel room, parking lot, or wherever you are before you go running. The link below will take you to the video which Jason Fitzgerald has made to demonstrate each of the warm up routines. SATURDAY, APRIL 21, :00 AM. MIRACLE MILES FOR KIDS 10K. MORRO ROCK, MORRO BAY. This beautiful 10K (6.2 miles) race course runs along the water s edge from Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier.Due to the unpredictable nature of weather, you may be rerouted off the beach and onto residential neighborhoods for a portion of the race course. We will notify you in advance if a detour is necessary. $50 from February 15th March 31, $60 from April 1 April 19, $65 on Race Day, Kids under 5 are Free 17 and under (Youth Discount) $15, College Student Discount $35 Your participation in Miracle Miles for Kids helps to meet critical needs of the over 1,800 children, youth and families served by FCNI annually. The courses are closed to vehicles and consist of blacktop, dirt and "some hills." They may be altered from previous years a little to insure they are accurate 5K and 10K distances. Both events will start at 9:00 AM. Registration will start at 8:00 to 9:00 AM in the Tule Village which is located northwest of the Visitor s Center approximately ¼ of a mile next to the large oak tree parallel to a service road. Entry Fees: Adults: 5K - $10 and 10K - $15. Children 17 & under: 5K - $5 and 10K - $10. (LVDC members receive a $2 discount) Awards will be given to male and female 1 st and 2 nd place winners for both distance events, There will be 8 age groups: 17 & under, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+. Held in early May on Mother s Day weekend, it s the perfect time to visit this haven for outdoor recreation. The area has plenty to offer including beach and ocean activities, hiking, biking and running trails, historic towns and missions, plenty of shopping and restaurant options, and an abundance of wineries and tasting rooms. And you ll LOVE this scenic course that runs from downtown Santa Ynez through Los Olivos into the Danish-settled town of Solvang. Bring your family and friends to enjoy a weekend full of activities in this bucolic setting and celebrate in style at the expanded post-race Wine & Music Festival in Solvang Park. Our local race is the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon on May 12th, but the code is good for their races all year. Everyone can save $10 using the code: DRAMB- NEMETH. SUNDAY May 29, :00 AM STRAWBERRY STAMPEDE 5K & 10K RUN AND 5K WALK. ARROYO GRANDE. The Strawberry Stampede is a non-profit fundraising event to benefit youth activities in the South County. It is held on Sunday of the Memorial Holiday Weekend, at the same time as the Arroyo Grande Strawberry Festival. These courses are scenic routes through Arroyo Grande with registration (6:45 AM on Race Day), the start, and the finish all at the end of Short Street by the swinging bridge. Proceeds go towards Kiwanis community service projects. Awards are three deep in five-year age groups in each of the races along with refreshments and prize drawings. The races are part of the Strawberry Festival that features food, music, and craft booths.
