1 York Road Runners Club I n s i d e t h i s i s s u e : Squaw Peak 50-miler Office Profile HARRC in the Park YRRC Board Minutes I s s u e President s Message Doug Barnett The York Road Runners Club has several great things going in its favor. We have a very dedicated staff of volunteers on our board that put in many hours of their free time a month, and ask for nothing in return. We have runners in our club who do many tasks. Most of our members have no idea the time and effort members have put into the workings of the York Road Runners Club. We have a few board members who have allow us to store club equipment in the barns and homes without a single complaint, and at no cost the club. These are just a small group of club members who give their time and effort to keep this club running smooth. So when the questions come up in conversations, be it at club board meetings or when a group of runners are together that the club needs to do more for its members, I feel the need to reach out to YRRC members. It is your club. Hal Darr who has been a club member for many years and is also a past YRRC president has been on a mission to provided events for this club. Hal has made phone calls and done the leg work to try and bring events that club members would enjoy. Hal presented the idea of a cross country run and club picnic free to club members and a small fee for guests and we had only eleven members sign up. We have over three hundred members in our club. I appreciate all of Hal s efforts and many attempts in this area! We are looking for ways to reach out and connect with our members, so I am asking for feedback from all YRRC members. I want to hear your ideas and what you would like to see from your club. I want to hear the negative comments and the positive as well. We have many young members in our club who I have to believe can come up with some great ideas for this club. This club has been growing for the past few years and we have had success in several areas S u m m e r within the club. Let s all put forth some effort to take us to the next level. My cell phone number and address are listed below. Please feel free to contact me to discuss any ideas that you may have. I look forward to hearing from many of you! See you on the roads and trails, Doug Barnett Co-President YRRC (717) dbarnett1961@comcast.net
2 P a g e 2 SQUAW PEAK 50 MILER June 1, 2013 Provo, Utah by Clay Shaw The race director, John Bozung, and I are good friends. We met at the Nanisivik Marathon in the Canadian Arctic in We were also roommates on the Antarctica Marathon trip in 1997 and have enjoyed many other marathon trips together. We are both originally California guys, and we share a common bond with running. I have helped John (JB) at seven of his Squaw Peak 50 Milers. I ve seen and been involved with the set-up and tireless work that he puts into hosting this high altitude run in the mountains in the Provo-Orem. This year a mild winter made for good course conditions. Combined with ideal weather for race day, it was close to perfect for the Squaw Peak 50. A record number of 238 finishers completed the 2013 running. Eric Storheim, 40, of Salt Lake City was first across the finish line in 8:43:38. He was followed by Dominick Layfield in 8:45:46 and Brian Beckstead in 8:53:38. Rounding out the top five were Ford Smith of Austin, TX in 8:58:10 and Cameron Kasteler in 9:01:51. Meghan Woolley of Salt Lake City, the defending champion, had a successful repeat, clocking in at 9:36:42. Darcy Africa of Boulder, CO, a previous winner at Squaw Peak, was second in 10:05:47. Also on the podium was Amie Blackham in 10:07:42 in third. Alexis Crelin was fourth in 10:37:47 and Deb McInally of South Bend, WA was fifth in 10:51:21. My wife Karen Mitchell had de- cided to give it a go and made the trip from Pennsylvania with me. Karen has run 100 marathons but no ultras other than one 50k in Texas in She loves trail running but hates to fall, and enjoys mountains but doesn t do well with altitude. OK, not the ideal debut course, but she hung in there and seemed to be holding her own through the halfway aid station. In order to see Karen, I drove around the mountain and saw more of the course than I had in my previous six trips out. Karen made it through mile 33, the Little Valley aid station, with 10 minutes to spare before the 2:30PM cutoff time. At that point, she was headed into the high country and Windy Pass at over 9000 feet elevation. While photographing the top runners and most of the middle of the packers during the afternoon at a beautiful meadow just above aid station 10, I got a phone call from Karen. At a rare moment, she had phone service and let me know that she was having a bad patch and wasn t happy! I decided to go up on the mountain to meet her. It took two hours to (Continued on page 4 )
3 OFFICER PROFILE Meet the men and women who volunteer their time and efforts to make YRRC the success it is! Bob Weikert Race Equipment Manager Hometown : Huntingdon, PA Age: 57 Occupation: Customer Service Representative Bob has been involved in various capacities, including Equipment Manger, President, Winter Series Director, Race Director for several different races over the years and race day volunteer for many races over his 23 year history with YRRC. He has also served as the Race Director for The Middle School Panther Invitational Twenty plus years and counting is a long time to serve as a volunteer in an orgnaization, why does he do it? I believe in the Club and what it does for the running community! Bob s service to YRRC pales in comparison to his running reusume of 40+years. Although 10 miles is his favorite distance, running for good health and to manage stress is what keeps Bob motivated to hit the roads and trails. Best advise from a seasoned veteran Get involved in the club and give back with your expertise and experience in running. HARRC in the Park to be held at Gifford Pinchot State Park on Sunday, 6 October 2013 The Harrisburg Area Road Runners Club (HARRC) will host their third annual HARRC in the Park 15K Trail Race at Gifford Pinchot State Park on Sunday, 6 October 2013, beginning at 10 A.M. The course will loop Pinchot Lake beginning from the Quaker Race Day Use Area, Lake View Pavilion, and circle counterclockwise back to the start. Most of the course will be single track trail with varying terrain [changes in elevation, technical (rocks and roots) and non-technical (relatively clear ) surfaces], with some road crossings and rated at a medium level of difficulty. P a g e 3 Awards will be presented to overall and age group winners and technical T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 100 registrants. Food and refreshments will be available at the Lake View Pavilion following the race. Registration is $30 ($20 for HARRC members) if received by 30 September 2013 and $35 ($25 for HARRC members) afterward. For an additional $3 nonmembers can join HARRC and enjoy savings at future races and discounts at local running stores such as the Inside Track. Online registration and mail-in forms may be found at below the HARRC in the Park banner. For further information contact Frank Crupi at fvcrupi@verizon.net or call
4 P a g e 4 powerwalk/run to where we met, and we finished the final miles together. We made it off the mountain and trails by dark, but still had the last 3 miles on tarmac to complete. Karen made it in 17:40:09, and at 62, was the oldest of the female finishers. Afterwards, we talked about the fantastic job JB and his volunteers do in making this event such a memorable one. The radio communications people are amazing and keep tabs on the in and out times at all the aid stations. Safety is so important in a mountain backcountry event and is deeply appreciated. The people who manage the aid stations are dedicated and friendly to the runners. At one aid station, not accessible by motor at all, the volunteers actually backpack the supplies five miles to the station and five miles back out again! 80 year old Grant Holdaway was hoping for his 12 th Squaw Peak finish. Sadly he finished 46 miles before having to drop out after suffering a bad cut earlier in the day. Every year he is accompanied by his daughter Wendy Holdaway and son-in-law Alejandro Flores from Mexico City. After Mr. Holdaway was given aid, Wendy and Alejandro finished the race. Everyone has the utmost respect for Mr. Holdaway. The Squaw Peak 50 miler is held the first Saturday in June every year. Online registration usually sells out fairly quickly. The event has a great following of repeat runners and JB has special awards for 5-year and 10-year finishers.
