THE LONG RUN The Official Publication of The Freehold Area Running Club Website: VOL. 20 NO. 2 01/02 FARC Hotline: (732) Hello From the President It s February already the New Year is well underway, and hopefully your running is going splendidly. That s what it s all about, right? We re a club of runners. We love to talk about PRs and favorite courses. How we did this week versus last week. How many miles we put in or didn t. What the next training challenge is -- whether it s recovering from an injury or building up the miles. Encouraging our family and friends to share the running bug with us, savoring the friendships we ve made while running, and looking forward to making new friends on the roads and trails. What are your running goals for 2002? Could this be the year you run a marathon? The year you combine your running with biking and/or swimming to do a biathlon or triathlon? The year you break 27 minutes in the 5K? The year you run more than twice a week? The year you take up running with your spouse? I like setting goals for the New Year. Not resolutions. Those are made to be broken. But goals are good because when you reach them, you feel like you ve accomplished something. My running goals for this year are to do the St. Paddy s 10-Mile, a half-marathon later in the spring, at least 2 of the Hartshorne Woods Trail runs (I love them!), and to log at least 50 miles at the Manasquan Reservoir with fellow FARCers. Maybe, just maybe, I ll train for a fall marathon. As the new President of the Freehold Area Running Club, I have goals for our club, too. They are: 1. To keep running fun. Hey, need I say more? This is an easy goal for FARC, I think, because as a club we tend to have fun. We try to have fun prizes that we award to lots of folks, fun food like chicken soup and donuts in the winter and ice pops in the summer, great camaraderie at the reservoir runs, and some of the best-attended big races in the county, like the St. Paddy s 10-Mile and the Friday 5K For Women (could it be the free beer after both these races?). This year we want to try more fun things, like an April Fool s backwards mile, a full moon run and a new moon run. 2. To increase membership participation. Can you believe there are over 750 of us in FARC?? Chances aren t bad that the guy or gal in line next to you at Shop Rite is a FARC member or related to a FARC member. Go ahead, ask! Yeah, go for it! Well, there s power in numbers. There s encouragement, there s support, there s good ideas, there s networking, there s social activities, there s new running places to learn about, there s history in the making there s as little or as much as you want, but you ve got to help make it happen. When was the last time (or the first time) you came to a FARC members meeting? Come on, bring the whole family. There s a fun run before the meeting, a guest speaker to enlighten you about some aspect of health, and there s free food. 3. To eat, drink and be merry. Speaking of food Honestly, what better way to make a friend than to sweat out a race or training run with someone and then dig into a bagel and a juice, or a sub and a beer? Those reservoir runners have it all on us they do this every week. And what do members of other clubs say about our annual awards dinner? That we know how to have fun. Congo lines, the electric slide, the time warp brigade, we do them all. Once we ve put in our miles, of course. 4. To follow in the footsteps of the FARC greats. The club is celebrating the 20 th anniversary of its summer series this year!!!! As a relatively new member of the club (6 years in May), I am constantly amazed at what the founders and members have done and do all the time to keep this club running as it were. We ve got a(nother) great executive board. If you don t already, get to know us and tell

us if you think we re doing a good job or not. That s what ll keep the club going in the long run. May 2002 be your best year ever, whatever your goals. Happy trails. -Dominique De Vito FARC Executive Board President Dominique De Vito Executive Vice President Linda Hyer Executive Vice President Dick Heuser Treasurer Mike O Connell Secretary Avram Shapiro CLUB MEETING TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19 No More Pain, All Gain Wonder why you re feeling so tired lately? By Bud Fitch Cape Cod continued to be the personal best capital of the world as Bud Fitch set a PB for 1.8(?) miles in this New Year's Eve "race" which was really a stroll for revelers in various types of costumes, some of which were actually quite good. The time of this personal best could not be reported because nobody kept time. Actually, the finish line wasn't marked either and the course was probably measured by automobile odometer. Oh yeah, Bud finished fourth overall, but only about 6 of the participants were really running. It was fun anyway! WARREN BANNERMAN Regular Meeting & Full Moon Run Thursday, August 22, Michael J. 4 The Freehold Area Running Club mourns the loss of Warren Bannerman, 62, one of our earliest and most loyal members, from injuries sustained in an auto accident at the corner of Route 9 and Elton-Adelphia Road, a few blocks from his home. A computer consultant and avid sports enthusiast, Warren started running in 1977, served on the organizing committee for the Race Against Hunger in 1981, and, with the rest of the committee, joined FARC in Known for running shirtless in all but the coldest weather, he was a regular in area races until a detached retina and complications ended his competitive running. He continued to jog regularly to stay in shape, and became one of FARC's most reliable volunteers, cheerfully willing to help wherever needed. In recognition, the club elected him to its Foyer of Distinction in 1992, and he remained an active member to the end. Our sympathy goes out to his family. Jog in peace, Warren We'll miss you. On a personal note: I first met Warren on the bus to NYC when we were neighbors in Juniper Farms. We both started running in 1977, raced in friendly, but serious competition for several years, served together under director Bruce Berritt on the Race Against Hunger committee, along with Ralph Garfield (all of us joined FARC at the beginning, and all made it into the Foyer). I often jogged with him, engaging in humorous conversation and occasional semi-competitive spurts. His eye problems and my switch to racewalking took us in separate directions, but we stayed friends, and Warren was always #1 on Marcia's list to call for volunteers. Friendly, social competition and willingness to help: Warren epitomized FARC. - Avram Shapiro The club must sadly report the death of Warren Bannerman, the victim of a vehicular accident during the snowstorm on Sunday, January 20. He was in his car on Route 9 when it was hit by another car that ran a red light. Warren s strong heart helped him battle his injuries for ten days. He leaves behind a beautiful family, wife Arleen, three adult children and two grandchildren. Warren began running when his eldest son Brett took up cross-country in high school. He soon realized the physical benefits of the sport and he was hooked. As his son Brett remarked at the funeral service, his dad had made a statement at his 60 th birthday party that I don t feel 60ish, I feel young and strong. But there was more to it for Warren. He was one of the original supporters of the Race Against Hunger in Not long after he was one of the original founders of our club. He helped out at races, many times over the years. He always gave back to the sport and to supporting worthy causes. Indeed, Warren represented the epitomy of what running is all about. In recognition of his contributions, Warren was the seventh person inducted into the club s hall of fame, the Foyer of Distinction, in Many of us will remember Warren s dedication to the sport, exemplified by the way he ran all those bitterly cold winter series races without a shirt on. Thank you so much for all you have given back. We will miss you, Warren, but we know you will never stop running. - Bob Hyer Note: Warren resided at 68 Bar Harbor South Freehold, NJ CLUB KUDOS: To all of FARC and its officers, I would first like to say what a nice event, Saturday night's dinner, turned out to be - first class, from start to finish. My table stared at me, as I consumed two huge plates of food. I was glad I never had a chance to eat, all day, as the food was terrific. I think I even outdid John M., at the buffet line. Secondly, I want to thank FARC for selecting me as the club's "Runner Of The Year". I appreciate not only this great honor, but the great races FARC has allowed me to enjoy, over the years. Clubs like FARC have helped me to enjoy running, and all the great people associated with running, over all of these years. Thank You, Dave DeMonico Thanks for the nice write-up and the pix of me on your race results section from Sunday's race. And having Dominique interview me afterwards was also very nice. Your club members really made me feel like a celebrity of sorts. And I do hope that I can keep running every day for the next 5,000...and the 5,000 after that... and on and on. Good job on the race. I've done your 10-miler three times in the past (most recently in 95) and look forward to doing some of your races again. I've also told many of my friends and fellow Clifton Roadrunners what a nice job you do (Doris Hafemann has also run some of your winter 5K's, and also enjoys them).

Thanks again, and keep up the good work! Tom Allen Celebrating 5,000 Days of Running On January 27, 2002, the Freehold Area Running Club s Winter Series races had a special participant, Tom Allen. Tom came all the way to Michael J. Tighe Park to run that Sunday because he was looking for a special event at which to celebrate his 5,000 th continuous day of running. Wow, 5,000 days in a row! That s nearly 14 years without missing a single day!! In fact, Tom remembers the last day he didn t run. It was May 20, 1988!!! What s Tom s motivation? I enjoy running, he said. He s learned to read his body and he doesn t get sick often. It s easier to run every day than not, he explained. Then you only have to make the decision to run once. If you don t make the decision you have to fight the demons all day. Once the decision is made, it s just a matter of when and how far. He was quick to point out that others have been running continuously for longer than he has, and that someone else he knows does a minimum of 4 miles on his daily runs. Tom s minimum is 2 miles. He s run in all kinds of weather, of course, and remembered one day when he and a friend laced up their shoes and ran in water as deep as the curb after a drenching rain. Like everything in life, Tom said, the excuse not to run is always legitimate. His daily decision to run eliminates the need for an excuse. Sounds simple, doesn t it? Tom started running just before he turned 32. He was losing his job and wanted to get back into shape. His initial goal was to run a sub-6 mile. He s now 49 and has accomplished that and much more. Tom has raced distances of 500 meters to 50 miles. He s run over 400 races, several of them to commemorate one of his daily milestones. For example, he ran a 4000-meter race on his 4,000 th day. On his 35 th birthday he ran 35 miles in Brookdale Park (his favorite place to run). When he turned 38 he did meter sprints, and on his 40 th birthday he attempted a sub-40 10K. As I write this, Tom s on his 5,007 th day. Tom, we salute your dedication. Long may you run!!! WAY TO GO, WALT! Once again, Walt Rutsky put all the pieces together to stage 5 great Winter Series races on the Sundays of January 6, 13, 20, 27 and February 3. For those of us who come for the bountiful food, warmth and comfort of the indoors, and to see how we progress or regress over the 5K course from week to week, it s easy to take for granted all the hard work that goes into making these events as pleasant as they are. Walt and his team of volunteers -- including his wife, Kathy, who greets everyone with a donut and a smile; Isabelle O Donovan- Keeley, who makes the best soup in Monmouth County; Terry Dunsheath, who brings the bagels and donuts every week and is always there with a helping hand or three; Marcia and Avram Shapiro, who sign everyone in; Bob and Linda Hyer, who coordinate behind the scenes; Tom Wendel, who works the clock; Jack Lucey, who helps with results; Mike O Connell and Bob Waitt, who get the kids off and running with a big smiles every Sunday; and everyone who pitches in deserve the hardiest of thank-yous and the biggest of hugs. Your spirit is infectious. No wonder the Winter Series is such a hit. Walt, does this mean you ll do it again next year?? SATURDAY MORNING RUNS: On the Road Once a month on Saturday mornings, a group of FARC members are going "on the road" to run at different places in the area. The first run will be on February 16th. Everyone is invited! We will meet behind Barnes and Noble (corner of Highway 9 and 33) in Freehold at 7:30 am. We will then car pool to Princeton to run on the canal. After the run, we plan to stop for goodies!! PICKING UP THE CHANGE - Update At the end of January, Tom Russell ($2.95), Fran Emanuel ($0.84), and Jim Bergum ($0.20) are leading the pack in the Picking Up The Change program. Every roadrunner has come across the stray penny, nickel or dime while running. And you really hit it big when you find that elusive quarter. Well, to give you incentive to pick up the change and maybe run a little further in pursuit of some change, FARC has developed a Road Change Program. From December 1 st 2001 to December 1 st 2002 we want you to pick up that money. At the end of the month your monthly finding to our web master at webmaster@farcnj.com where the running totals are kept. You can view the current totals by going to and going to the FARC EVENTS page. At the end of the year the person who accumulates the most road change will win a prize and everyone s cash accumulated will be used to purchase gifts that will be donated at the Toys For Tots race. WEBSITE UPDATE To keep up with what s happening in our club, visit the website. Check the Hot News when you get to the website. You can also find previous newsletters, a race calendar, articles sent in by the

members, and great links to other running clubs. We are planning to set up a distribution list for the website to keep members up to date when there are changes to the site or we want to get a message out quickly to the members. If you would like to be on this list, please send your address to webmaster@farcnj.com. GIRLS ON THE RUN NEED VOLUNTEERS Our girls are still talking about the great experience they had at the Toys for Tots 5K in December. We are looking forward to having a few of our members join your St Paddy's Day race. Our spring program starts April 8 and we desperately need volunteers to assist our coaches with the girls. Our tentative times are in Holmdel from 3:15 to 4:15, Mondays/Wednesdays, Marlboro Monday through Thursday, 4-6, and Colts Neck, Tuesday/Thursday 4-5. We need commitments for only one day a week, two would be best but we can assign volunteers to one day as long as they can reliably be there every Monday from 4/8 to 6/12. If you are interested, contact Fran at Girlsontherun07751@yahoo.com We're not looking for athletes - runners are good, but we need women passionate about working with young girls. We appreciate your help as we get our girls up and running for the spring. Nutrition Quiz Answer: (c) The baked beans contain 1 gram of fat. Although the plain mashed potatoes contain only a trace amount of fat, the gravy adds fat, for a total of 1.6 grams. The coleslaw contains 6 grams of fat and the biscuit contains 13 grams of fat. As a general rule of thumb, a gram of fat equates to about 9 calories of fat. RACE RESULTS WINTER SERIES Race 1 The Freehold Area Running Club s Winter Race Series got into action on January 6 th. It was the start of 20 th season of this annual event. Although advertised as the

19 th year, incoming president Dominique DeVito checked the extensive club archives only to find out that this is the 20t h annual series. Does anyone really care? Let s run! The venue of the series was the same as always, Liberty Oak Park, Freehold Township. No not Liberty Oak Park, the park was recently renamed to Michael J. Tighe Memorial Park. The name change did not cause any of the 149 participants to not find the race place. The veteran runners coming to this series just showed up by rote. For the new comers, it was like any other run, follow the person in front of you and you won t get lost. By the way, the 149 athletes in the 5K were a record number for the winter s series. The club thanks you for your participation. A 1-mile kid s run was added to this year s program. The 1-mile and ½ mile kid s runs took place prior to the featured 5K. The weather was decent for the runners. At least the snow that was predicted for this evening did not make an early appearance. For once, let s give credit to the weather prognosticators. Our first grand winner for the 20 th Annual Freehold Area Running Club Winter Series was Dave DeMonico of South River in a time of 15:54. No one challenged Dave today. Second place finisher Glenn McIssaac, Princeton, with a 16:54 was 1-minute behind. Third place went to Ken Vercammen, So.Brunswick 17:36. On the women s side, it was a young lady who has been running here over the past several years and improving each year. Her time has come, top honors went to 11- year old, Amanda Cavallo, Bayville, with a time of 19:56. No real challengers to Amanda either as second and third places went to Theresa Marciani, Brick 20:52 and Erin Coyne, Freehold 21:04, respectively. Fran Bell ran undefeated as a Clydesdale in the series last year. His streak ended this year as this time it was Clydesdale Robert McGill, South Plainfield finding his way to the winner s circle. Bob s winning time was 22:54. Pacing second was Jim Bergum, Howell 24:10. Our winning race walkers today were Jack Lach, Wall 27:58 for the men and Fran Emanuel, Brick 34:42 for the women. Kids are runners too! They were all winners today. Eight ran in the 1-mile run and nine ran in the ½-mile. They all had a good time! Race 2 One hundred forty seven people signed up for the second 5k race. The earlier morning rains had stopped and the second week of the series was run in chilly and very windy conditions. Dave DeMonico of South River was the winner for the second week in a row. Dave s winning time of 16:23 was off last week s time of 15:54. The wind was a factor and Dave ran in the SAC winter series the previous day (reasonable reasons for the slower time). Just as the week before, his nearest competitor was over a minute behind. Second place was hotly contested as Forest Shea, Mantoloking 17:29 edged out Forest Kayser, Wall 17:30 by one second. Jennifer Dolan, Lakewood 20:20 beat Maggie Freeman, Spring Lake 20:26 by six seconds for the women s win. Michelle Laroche, Highland Park 22:42 took third. The thundering herd (Clydesdale division) was led by Jaymee Carey, Manasquan 22:27. Robert McGill, South Plainfield 23:30 was good for second. And Jim Bergum, Howell 23:55 landed third. Race walker Jack Lach, Wall 27:58 nailed his second win of the series. He was followed by Ben Ottmer, Lakewood in a time of 30:46. For the women, it was Ashleigh Pisciotta, Marlton 30:48 for first. Joan Venslavsky, Mercerville 32:41 took second. Race 3 Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, in the lane snow is glistening. A beautiful sight, we're happy tonight, RUNNING in a winter wonderland. RUNNING in a winter wonderland, RUNNING in a winter wonderland. That sums up the action for the third week of the winter series. We had our first significant snowfall of the year. Only 42 showed up today. Nevertheless the action went on. The park s maintenance people did a great job in clearing the way for safe running conditions. Thank you very much! Of course, the race was all on the park road as the bike path was rendered unusable. Eric Bonnette upended Dave DeMonico, South River, the winner for the past two weeks today. Eric came all the way from Haddenfield to take part in our series. Both of these guys heated up the course today melting any leftover snow with times of 15:36 and 15:49. However, Dave, did take first in his age group (30-39). Dave shared some additional information regarding Eric. Eric was a Division 1 collegiate runner with William & Mary, and is headed to California for a three-month stay with the Fila Discovery Elite runner training camp. He

was selected as an up-and-coming talent, looking towards a marathoning future. Eric ran 50 minutes for the Broad Street Run 10 Mile, this past May, in Philadelphia. I took the chance to do a run with a talent like that, and BS a bit. I also figured I'd let you guys know what a talent came through FARC, today. That was fun to see. Yes indeed, it was fun to see and good luck to Eric in the future from FARC. Jon Gloth, Freehold with a time of 17:34 was in third place and first in his age group (20-29). Our top three women were Chris Murphy, Pt. Pleasant 20:56, Theresa Marciani, Brick 21:16 (1 st 40-49) and Christine Sanguinetti, Robbinsville 22:17 (1 st 30-39). In addition to the great mugs, our top male and female winners received an on-site one-hour free massage or fitness session. This prize was provided by courtesy of Tom Jakositz. Thanks Tom! Jim Bergum, Howell, has been in the money for the third week in row in Clydesdale division. In this outing he took first, his first win of the season with a time of 23:24. Jack Lach, Wall 27:09 won for the third time in a row this year. While Ann St.Germaine, Eatontown 37:28 won for the first time. Last week it was not mentioned but it should be noted. Rick Bessette assisted visionary impaired Billy Holes over the 5K course. It s good to know that running is for everyone. Race 4 The pitter-patter of running feet continued for the fourth Sunday (1/27/02) in a row at Michael J. Tighe Memorial Park. The runners were back, fully recovered from last week s winter storm. Mild temperatures for the week melted all of the snow making the bike path usable for the 140-plus running faithful (???). The weather today wasn t too wintry. The sky was bright and sunny with the temperatures in the 40 s and rising quickly. We had a special runner today. Know as TA (a.k.a. Tom Allen of Bellville), he completed his 5,000 th day of running in a row in today s race. His minimum run is 2 miles a day with an average of a hair over 7 during this streak. The last day he missed was 5/20/88. FARC tips its hat to Tom and wishes the streak to continue for another 5,000 plus days. It was great to have Tom run his 5000th consecutive running day here at our Winter Series. Running embraces all and FARC is a part of it. Last week we had Eric Bonnette. He was selected as an up-and-coming talent and will be attending the Fila Discovery Elite runner training camp. The week before that it was our club s own Rick Bessette leading vision impaired Billy Holmes over the 5K course. The FARC winter Series has evolved into the running mecca of central New Jersey. Dave DeMonico of South River was the winner today rebounding from last week s defeat. Dave took it a little easy today with a winning time of only (ONLY!) 16:22. He had to keep a little in reserve; he was quickly on his way to run the Ocean Running Club s race. In a real battle for second, Dave Huse, Princeton, edged out Bubba Shea, Mantoloking, with both scoring a 16:54. Briana Jackucewicz, Farmingdale, made her first winter series start today. She finished tenth overall and easily won in the women's pack in a time of 18:35. Previous weekly winners Amanda Cavallo, Bayville and Jennifer Dolan, finished second and third. Amanda's time was 19:46 and Jennifer's was 21:05. The Clydesdale results were the same as week 1. It was once again Robert McGill, South Plainfield, 23:16 beating Jim Bergum, Howell, 23:41. Jack Lach, Wall 27:11 led the way again this week as the number one race walker. Ashleigh Pisciotta of Marlton led the way for the women with a time of 29:56. Several of our walkers were on the youthful side today. So, an award for the leading youth was presented to Billy Wides, Florham Park, for turning in a 29:26 performance. Race runners close out the Winter Series on another nice day. Overall the series was run in non-wintry weather. Yes, we did have one sizable snowfall for week 3. But the park had been cleared and the race went on albeit the bike path was not used. By the way, over the past several years series there were times when the bike path could not be used and the races were run on the park road. This led to a little debating on how much longer or shorter the road was compared to the official course. Well, the answer is, the road course is 408 feet longer. The winter series final race, as in the first race of the series was won by Dave DeMonico, South River in a time of 16:26.Eric Bonnette ran the best men s time of the year 15:36, on week 3 on the longer park road course. Dave s best time of the year was his second

place finish behind Eric in a time of 15:49. It looks like that when you duke it out with someone else; it brings out the best in you. Dave s best winning time of the year was in week 1 in a time of 15:54 on the official 5K course. Our winning woman for the final race was Jennifer Clausen, Jackson Her winning time was 18:55. Our fastest women s time of the year was week 4 s winner, Briana Jackucewicz of Farmingdale. Her time was 18:35. It s been Jack Lach (Wall) all year in the men s race walker division. He had five starts and five wins. In his finale his winning time was 26:20. Also, this time was his best effort for the year. Ashleigh Pisciotta, Marlton 30:46 was the first women race walker with Joan Venslavsky, Mercerville 30:59 finishing second only 13 seconds behind. Ashleigh s 29:56 week 4, was the fastest women s walk time of this series. For the Clydesdales, it was the same two workhorses as the previous week. Robert McGill, South Plainfield, 22:43 bested Jim Bergum, Howell, 23:33. Jamee Carey s (Manasquan) week 2 time of 22:27 was the fastest of the Clydesdales this year; still not good enough for any of the local tracks. A special thanks to all of the volunteers who made this year s Winter Series happen: Avram and Marcia Shapiro, Jack Lucey, Isabel Keeley, Dick & Carolyn Heuser, Tom Wendel, Bob, Linda and Renee Hyer, Tom and Terry Dunsheath, Ralph Garfield, Hal Smith, Pat Coyne, Nate Bergum, Kathy Rutsky, Bob Stoveken, Tom Apostle, Ed Daley, Pat Coyne, Hank Bailey, Bob Waitt, Mike O Connell and Dominique DeVito. Have a happy and healthy running the rest of the year. And remember: ONLY THREE HUNDRED THIRTY FIVE (335) days left until the Winter Series 2003!
