THE LONG RUN The Official Publication of The Freehold Area Running Club Website: VOL. 21 NO. 1 02/03 FARC Hotline: (732) President s Corner It was January, 1995, when I took over the helm as the 5 th President of this club. My reign lasted three years before I turned over the gavel. In the years since, we have had three different women Presidents, and at one point had an all-woman executive board. To be sure, they have left this club in outstanding shape. First of all, all of our events are experiencing at or near record attendance. This is witnessed by our first Winter Series 5K last month, where we had over 160 finishers (for just a little winter series run here in Jersey!). Second, club membership is at record levels and still rising, with over 400 memberships and about 800 individual members. Third, the clubs finances are sound - in fact, they are actually outstanding for a non-profit running club. And fourth, our volunteer support is un-paralleled in the state. So, thank you ladies (and all the guys who helped too), in allowing me to re-take the helm of a vibrant, active organization. I look forward to working with the new executive board, a solid group of great guys who can make things happen and have some fun too. They are: Mike, Barry, Avram and Art. Don t let me forget the other stalwarts who help drive this engine, an outstanding group of quality, caring people. And lastly, thank you Dominique for your direction as President over the last year. Your ideas and inspiration drove us all. Truly, I am blessed to be able to know and work with so many wonderful people. I am humbled. See you on the roads. Get Your Newsletter by ! Weekly Group Runs With the Winter Series over, FARC s group runs continue every Sunday (not March 16), 8:30 AM at the Manasquan reservoir in Howell. I sure hope we have resolved the start time for now. All paces and distances welcome. The club provides the post run bagels. So, on your next free Sunday, come on out and share a run. Welcome to FARC The club would like to welcome the following new members: Peihan Su, Alice Grande, Ellen Blashkovsky and Przemek Nowicki, all from Marlboro; racewalker Eric Litt from Philadelphia; Bill O Brien from Avenel; Frank Harczuk, Rob Mauro and Craig Stratton, all from Tinton Falls; the Gallagher family (Cappy, Patrick & Jessica) from Manalapan; Christine Sanguinetti, Susan Kratz and Judith Sweetman, all from Robbinsville; Kimberley Daley from Brielle; Gavin Bannat from Lincoln Park; Jeff Allen, the Cordiner family (Erin & Ashley), Christine Pascoal, Peter Lowe, Laura Tiefenthaler, Mel Lerman and Don Pope, all from Freehold; Jim Pate from Browns Mills, Michael Keklak from Toms River, John Donoghue from Howell; and moving back to the US (after moving over and back to England previously), the Shimmings family (Mark, Louise, Mark & Sebastian). Welcome one and all. The accompanying Marlboro 1 Mile Fun Run open to everyone - goes off at 7 PM. The event again benefits the Sandra M. Glazier Foundation, which supports families of cancer victims. We are also staging a new women s event, at Monmouth Battlefield State Park. This is the RYKA Take Fitness to Heart women s only 10K and 5K. The date and time is Sunday, July 27, at 9 AM. Other Club Affiliated Events The club is also forming teams for three relay events. First is the Jersey Shore Relay, from Seaside to Asbury, on April 12. FARC had 5 teams there last year. Then there is the Lehigh River Relay, in PA from Allentown to Easton, on July 20 (see Walt s article below). Both events have relay legs of varying distances. Some of our teams are more competitive and others are lets run this and have some fun. Yes, we have race walkers too. And don t forget the overnight Relay For Life, at Freehold Raceway, on June 7-8 (see Mike s article below). FARC had 40 runners and walkers there last year, supporting this good cause. We are actively looking for participants for all events, so call our hotline if interested. Another new event is the New Grange School Steps for Success 5K, being held at 10 AM in Mercer County Park on Sunday, May 3, benefiting this non-profit school in Hamilton. FARC is also involved in the Spring Lake 5, the Metuchen Y run in June and the Wall Fire Cracker 5. And we have the 10 mile water stop at the NJ Marathon on April 27. We are all volunteers, so help is always appreciated. Yes, this club does support running. 2

Member Profile... Art Rosen by Bud Fitch This is certainly one guy who doesn t believe in easing into things. Less than eighteen months after starting to run (to stay in shape), Art ran his first marathon! Admittedly, it did help that Art has always been active athletically swimming, and playing basketball and baseball. So, in May 2001, Art started running and dieting. By October, he had dropped 30 pounds and by then he felt that he could eat as much as he wanted, as long as he kept running. Pretty cool deal, huh? Art upped the ante by joining FARC in January He was invited by Avram Shapiro to join the Sunday morning group at the Manasquan Reservoir. Art was told that most runners covered 10 miles each Sunday morning. Obviously, he had never heard of Five Mile Buddy. Now this was an imposing thought to Art, who got tired driving 10 miles. Nevertheless, Art started right off with a ten miler. Being an inquisitive guy, Art asked the other runners various questions concerning speed, form, shoes and races. Everyone was will to answer all Art s questions and share their insights based on their own experiences. What a great source of information! The only misleading bit of info was provided by Mike O Connell, who offered his own personal definition of fartlek, which Art learned later had nothing to do with what he had eaten the previous night. Being inspired by the marathon tales of the running group, Art decided on an ambitious schedule of Spring events, including the E. Murray Todd Half-Marathon, St. Paddy s 10 Miler, the Jersey Shore Relay and later the Jersey Shore Half Marathon. Complementing his racing, Art increased his training mileage to 30 miles per week, mostly because of the encouragement he received from his fellow FARCers. Now, Art was ready for his next quantum leap, as he decided to run the Philadelphia Marathon. Again, he resorted to advice from his mentors, especially those experienced distance runners, the Lindas -Hyer and O Brien- who provided him with invaluable advice for both physical and mental preparation. Art added to his knowledge base by devouring countless books, in addition to picking the brains of all the marathon veterans he encountered. He played it by the books, including proper running, diet, weight control, hill workouts, etc. Running six days a week did present a challenge, but Art didn t want to stray from his plan. He increased his mileage, pushing the envelope between peak performance and injury/burnout. Ignorance also contributed to his workout regimen, as Art did not schedule easy days after races or long runs. Instead, he maintained his 10K race pace on all workouts, including 18 to 20 milers. Art s body (and Fred Touatti s advice) helped Art realize that it was time to taper about three weeks before the marathon. Nothing like a little Achilles tendon soreness to smarten a runner up. Actually, Art feels that the extra long taper helped him successfully complete the marathon. Both Art and his many coaches were proud of his accomplishment at Philly. Currently, Art continues to run various courses and distances around his neighborhood in Manalapan and, of course, around the Reservoir, where he enjoys the camaraderie of his fellow runners. Art attributes his continuing enjoyment of running to the enthusiasm and support of the FARC members. He cherishes the friendships he has made within the running community. Mostly, Art appreciates the noncompetitive support that FARC members offer to encourage people to run their best and enjoy running. Art has channeled his enthusiasm for running and has chosen to give back to the club by contributing as a Board Member and Club Treasurer. Letters to the Editor To Whom it May Concern, as you can see, I will be coming from Morris County. I do not mind because you people always do such a great job. I have run your races before. As a matter of fact, I cannot wait until your winter series in January/February. Again Great Work! Bill Hagman Thank you for inviting us to your annual dinner. We had a blast!! The food was good and the DJ played great songs but the best part was having a chance to see our FARC friends again. See you all at the St. Paddy's 10 miler! June & Jack Anderson ORC Treasurer & President I really enjoyed my second winter series FARC 5K today! I ran your Toys For Tots 5K in December and was impressed with your family of runners and the well run (pardon the pun!) event. So I joined FARC after that.. My wife Nansie walks a lot and hopefully soon we ll see her enter the club s 5Ks as a walker (besides coming down to cheer me on). My sons Richard Jr. and Michael have toyed with running and are avid soccer players, so I hope they ll enter races as well. We re happy to be part of such a vibrant club.. Best Regards, Rich Salls 3

Spotlight on Scholastic Running by Bob Waitt In an effort to highlight and promote some of our younger and upcoming talent, FARC has decided to devote a column of our newsletter to scholastic running. This newsletter will be the first of many to focus on our high school harriers and we look forward to introducing our talented young runners to the rest of the FARC membership. This month the spotlight shines on Victor Vientos of Saint John Vianney High School. Victor used to attend soccer games that his dad was involved with when he was a child and often found himself running around the fields. As he grew, so did his love for running and by the eighth grade Victor found himself involved with track at Carl Sandburg Middle school. Victor then entered Saint John Vianney as a freshman and continued his running to the present day. Victor is an outstanding mile and two-mile runner posting times in the mile at 4:36 indoor this year and an outdoor time of 4:35 last year. He was voted 3 rd team All Conference by the Asbury Park Press and was 17 th overall at the 2002 Shore Conference X-country Championships with a time of 16:46 at the Holmdel course. For those of you who have never run The Bowl at Holmdel this is one of the most challenging X- country courses in the state and also a favorite training ground of Vic s. He enjoys running 800 interval sessions on the track to help improve his speed and endurance and likes participating in the relay events with the members of his track team on the weekends. His favorite events to run in are the 4x800 and the Distance Medley of which he and his teammates have excelled in. Victor likes to run and train in the winter and told us his favorite pre race food was pasta. No running column is ever complete without a good running story and this writer searched for one with Victor. While he stated he has never been chased by a dog while running he did admit to getting lost about a mile from his house on one of his runs. He quickly found his way again and was back on track. One of Victors competitors Ryan Bennett of Old Bridge High school said, Victor is a great runner and a great guy. He and I ran together in Middle school he s a great runner with a bright future. We at FARC agree, Victor s running future seems very bright and we look forward to seeing more of him at our FARC races throughout the year. Although from the results of my interview I think most of us will only be seeing the back of him. (Look for future profiles of scholastic runners) From the Vientos family: Victor, running for St. Johns Vianney, has been selected: - AP Press Boys Cross Country All-Shore 3rd Team - Star Ledger Boys Cross Country All-State Parochial 3rd Team - Star Ledger Boys Cross Country All- Monmouth County 3rd Team And finally the best news, Victor has been accepted into the class 2007 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. Victor will be running for the Mountain Hawk and will major in Computer Engineering. Congratulations Victor! Relay For Life - June 7 & 8 by Mike O'Connell The American Cancer Society will have its annual Relay For Life on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8. The event will again take place on the Freehold Raceway Track (I think... the first meeting isn't until ). Please consider giving your time and raising some money for this worthy cause. I probably don't need to remind you that each of us knows someone who had died from cancer, presently battles cancer, or is a survivor. I'm asking you to come out and help them. The event starts Saturday around noon and continues through the next morning. Dozens of teams participate including schools (look for Bobby Waitt), corporations, hospitals, families, clubs, and FARC. While most teams have someone walking the track at all times, FARC has runners. Over the last two years, we have been able to keep two runners on the track at all times and sometimes even more. We schedule people for half hour intervals and generally ask for a commitment of three intervals. You tell me if you want to do it three in a row or throughout the day. I promise I'll work with you. FARC has been well represented in the past, but we can do more. Come out and join us. It's worthwhile. I promise. Plus it's an excuse to get out of the house and have some fun with club members. If I haven't convinced you yet... listen just say it's your run for the day, but on the Horse Track. When's the last time you did that? Plus I see it as my way to thank God for the ability I have just to run. Whether I'm injured, tired, or cold, I can shuffle around a track for thirty minutes. I bet those afflicted with cancer would love to run if they could. If you are interested or want more information, call me at (732) I look forward to seeing you there. 4

Running Column For The Home News Tribune - for Thursday, January 23, 2003 By Madeline Bost, Ironia, NJ FREEHOLD SERIES KEEPS RUNNERS MOTIVATED Curl up on the sofa wrapped in a warm afghan reading a good book, or go out and run when it s ten degrees outside? For many runners the warm afghan will win out and who can blame them. It s been one heck of a winter so far and staying motivated to get out and run is not always easy. Some area runners have been using the Freehold Area Running Club s Winter Series to help them stay focused to keep up with their training. The club is celebrating its twentieth anniversary of holding a 5K for five consecutive Sundays in January and February at Michael Tighe (formerly Liberty Oak) Park on Georgia Road in Freehold. The races are run entirely in the park, using the park road and a bike trail when weather and snow pack permits. This past Sunday the trail could not be used and the course was altered to keep the runners safe from slipping on the icy trail. Although the course is basically flat, a brisk wind on part of the course can make it seem like an uphill battle. At the first race of the season on January 5 th, a record crowd of 157 runners and seven race walkers came for the race. Colder weather for the second race dropped the numbers down to 129 total finishers and last Sunday s frigid weather scared off a few more with only 117 finishing the race. But there is a carrot to keep them coming back. A special series award is given to all who have competed in all five races. That carrot has lured several Home News Tribune area runners. Tony Bleach of Cranbury has been to the first three with a best time of 21:39. Dan Carvill of Carlstadt has been right behind Bleach with a best of 21:48. Marty Slutzky of Edison is another series runner with all three as is Bob Kucharski of Bound Brook, Jim Jensen of Englishtown and Gene Yanchurak of North Brunswick. Bringing up the rear at each race, quite literally, is Bill O Brien, 76, of Avenel, who combines running with walking to spare his aching knees. No goodie bags or race shirts are given out making low fees of $4.00 for non-farc members and $2.00 for members possible. Registration is held in a heated building with indoor toilets. Warm soup and cocoa are served along with comfort foods like donuts and bagels after the race. A winter race can t get any better than that. Other Relay Team(s) Wanted The relay is coming, the relay is coming! No, not the Jersey Shore Relay. Well it is and the club is forming teams for it. But this is another relay and is just as much fun and teams are wanted. This one is the Red Cross Lehigh River Relay Run. It is run from Allentown, Pa. To Easton, Pa. and made up of 5 legs with the total distance of approximately 23 miles. Now is the time to start thinking about it because it takes place Sunday July 20, You can run the whole distance yourself if you want in what is referred to as the Iron division. We had teams the last 2 years. One year we went up the night before and partied hardy and still were able to finish. The other year we drove up the morning of the race and were able to finish again. Either way is doable. More info can be found on: Contact Walt Rutsky at or runwk@att.net for more details or to sign on the dotted line. Reminder, the Next Club Meeting - Podiatrist Susan Belanger talk to us about knee and ankle trauma at the next club meeting on Wednesday, March 12, 8PM at Michael Tighe Park in Freehold Township. There is the usual 3 mile fun run at 7:30 and FARC refreshments. We may also have some light packet stuffing for St. Paddys Runners Forum Death Valley Trail Marathon By David Gross The Death Valley Trail Marathon is run through Titus Canyon in Nevada and California. This "off the road and beaten track" marathon includes an elevation gain of 1800 feet - from 3400 to 5200 ft. - in the first 12 miles. The last part of the uphill consists of a series of switchbacks that are extremely steep and impossible to run. The scenery is unlike any you have ever run through. The aid stations are 5 miles apart so you must carry water plus a camera to prove to yourself that you actually did it. Don't expect any fast times - slow down to enjoy what mother nature has takes eons of time to create and relax afterwards in the pool at the Furnace Creek Ranch. My time was 4:59:08, which includes picture taking and chatting at aid stations. 5

Born to Run 5 Mile Results The 18 th annual BTR was held under chilly conditions, as 602 brave souls toured Freehold. Former Freehold Borough HS harrier Cynthia Savino, now from Hamilton, was the top female. She outlasted Lauren Rhatigan, 32:03 to 32:37. FARC s Maggie Freeman, Jennifer Wakeman and Lianne Price finished 3 rd, 6 th and 7 th. On the men s side multi-time winner and course record holder Dave DeMonico (26:47) was relegated to 3 rd place. Finishing 1-2 were Matt Kootman (25:56) and Bob DeFilippis (26:25). Congrats to race director Hank Bailey and the many club volunteers, on another fine event. Who was that gorilla anyway?
