If changes do occur then information will be posted to members via / snail mail and on the website. If members have questions or concerns please feel free to contact club officers. I wish you all a fulfilling, fun, and fantastic boating season from that last blob of bottom paint you need get out of your hair to the RYC Lobster Picnic in September. Sincerely, Bruce Stedman Dinghy Float Space: As of this date the RYC dinghy float is filled. If a piling is put in at the ACF so the float can be turned then possibly a few more spaces will open up. If you are still looking for a dinghy option (or mooring rental) contact the Atlantic Challenge Foundation at Join the 2003 / 2004 officer team: (Note: the drawing above does not represent the club officers as they have one tie and must share.) There will be vacancies for Rear Commodore and Chair of the Activities Committee. Duties for both are set forth in the bylaws. In addition, the Rear Commodore will be Deputy Chair of the Activities Committee which means The Rear will be the Chair if the position is unfilled. Nominations for Rear Commodore are cleared through the Nominating Committee. The Activities Chair's traditional responsibilities have included December Holiday Party (at the Samoset), Spring Get Together (at Rockland Boat Club) and Fall Lobster Picnic (at Beaver Lodge). Other duties are purchase and storage of supplies like coffee, soft drinks, paper plates and sundries required by the club for various functions. A simple expense account is maintained for submission to the Treasurer who will reimburse the Chair. It looks like a lot but requires only a few hour each month. Bruce will be contacting members who checked YES on their membership forms in the "willing to volunteer" area. Or, if you would like the job contact Bruce now. 1

2 MINUTES of RYC Member s Meeting at ACF, March 16, 2003 Attendance: 30 members The Commodore commenced with a Sailing physics lesson and announcements, then called the meeting to order at 3.10 pm. 1.Bruce asked that the Minutes of the previous (general) meeting be taken as read. Proposed by Marshall Cary and seconded by Jim Grimes. The ayes have it. 2. The Treasurer s report was called for. Gary Cran distributed a printed statement for the period ending February 28. He commented on Operating and Reserve Fund balances and pointed out that Membership Dues are at 60% of Much of the reserve fund will go to completion of the dinghy dock piling, and again, not all dinghy slots have been paid for. The Secretary mentioned that dinghy fees are due by April 1 from those who have filed reservation forms unaccompanied by payment. The Commodore commented that we now have a waiting list for dinghy slots. He called for a motion to accept the Treasurer s Report: Proposed by Mike Sodano, seconded by Cheri Hutchinson. The ayes have it. 3. Bruce now introduced new members: David Stebbins; Jim and Nancee Grimes; Nick Nicholson; Taylor Vaughan. Taylor, being experienced in such matters, has volunteered to be RYC Webmaster. Bruce concluded this item by announcing that April 15 is now the absolutely last deadline for membership renewal: If you want you and your boat to be listed in the 2003 Club Roster. Bruce then reported on Old Business arising from previous meetings in connection with discussions held at ACF with Warren Kaericher and KC Heyniger, on February 26. (a) ACF was informed that RYC is working on getting the piling completed for the dinghy dock. Gerrit Vander Veer will contact Art Tibbets, the contractor, to resolve this matter prior to the season. (b) Concerning dinghies foundering due to being caught under the pier, rainwater, easterly gales, et cetera. The conclusion is that members must monitor their own craft. Neither ACF nor RYC is responsible for protecting dinghies on or tied to the RYC float. (c) ACF suggested that the marine police are contacted if a dinghy without a RYC sticker is at the float perpetually. Management is a RYC responsibility, not ACF. (d) Any member, not just slot holders, may use the dinghy dock for short periods but should note remarks under c. (e) Members may tie up at the T-dock for short periods. ACF will try to designate the right side, viewed from seaward, of the cross T for drop-off and pickup. Water will be available at that point, thanks to Charles Falkingham (who gets high marks from ACF for his efforts). KC, the Dock Master, ventured that there must be priority for daytime ACF community programs. However, the 420 s will have a separate float away from the main T, which will free up space. (e) ACF agrees that Pope Sails carts will be left empty at the dock. Should members find otherwise please report such to the Commodore. (f) Given reasonable notice, ACF will endeavor to accommodate RYC use of the facilities. The club has reserved the meeting room for pm for all Tuesday night races, July 27 and 28 th am for the Annisquam YC Down East Race. Members having other dates in mind should notify the Commodore. (g) RYC is reminded that ACF is a school so consumption of alcohol on ACF premises must be discrete. Problems have not occurred but ACF wish to emphasis the point. (h) The bathroom can only be open when ACF is open, or for a RYC function. (i) Put garbage from any club function in the dumpster. Members holding dinghy slots may also use the dumpster for small amounts. (j) The ACF ramp is available for launching small boats but is locked most of the time. (k) A parking area for RYC dinghy slot members will be designated and marked. Overflow parking is at Pope Sails. (l) ACF will offer paid boat storage. Members should contact KC. (m) ACF needs more volunteers. Even summer-only volunteers. Call ACF at Planned: 1-2 days for a clean-up at ACF. The Commodore will let RYC members know when. Let s have a good turn out. 4. Toni Vander Veer announced that hours for the Spring Picnic on May 10 would be 4:30 8:30 pm. She reported few submissions for the RYC Cookbook so the project is now open-ended until further notice. Toni reminded members about items still available from the Club Slop Chest. 5. Al Hodsdon put forward an idea for a Community fun event on the water. Members were asked for ideas and suggestions included Greasy bowsprit climbing and dinghy joisting. There was general agreement that we might try an event within the club this year and, if deemed feasible, plan for an open event in There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was proposed by Mike Sodano, seconded by Gerrit Vander Veer. 2

3 Respectfully submitted, Ivan Hills, secretary Calendar Events: RYC Spring Fling Picnic at the Rockport Boat Club, Saturday May 10 starting at 4:30pm. Bring everything you would need for a picnic and hors d oeuvres to share. Cost is $5.00 per adult with children 12 and under free. The club will supply enough charcoal and grills, soda and mixers for all. This is a BYOB. Directions Rockport take the driveway by the photographic workshop; go to Rockport Marine; take a right and follow to the boat club. Entertainment will be the Rockland Community Steel Band. Question on the directions call Bruce RYC Cruise Schedule: Cruises are a great opportunity for new members to meet other RYC members and have fun learning new areas. Participants will meet at the start of each cruise, and daily, to confirm times and final locations. For more information contact Maryjane Shiverick. This cruise has found many to only a few boats attending but reports are that a good time has been had by all. June 21: Progressive Dinner: Broad Cove, Owl s Head. This event follows the Solstice Race. Members attending raft boats and bring a main course, desert, or salad. Hors d oeuvres are a shared item. Last year the Vander Veer s anchor held all the boats. Will this happen again this year? Arrival is usually around 4:30 to 5:00 pm finishing at sunset. No reservations are needed. July 3-6: Weekend Cruise: Warren Island, Holbrook Island, and Winter Harbor on Vinalhaven. This longer cruise is great way to take a look a Penobscot Bay and wonderful anchorages. Cruisers will have the opportunity to explore about the islands. August 9-16: Week Cruise: Blue Hill, Frenchboro, Great Wass Island and return. This journey will take the crews a bit further down east. Beautiful area to boat in. Great Wass area (by Jonesport) is interesting area of the Maine coast to explore. A week gives cruisers time to enjoy the trip at a relaxed pace. August 29 - September 1: Labor Day Weekend Cruise: Hurricane Island, Criehaven, Carver's Harbor. This popular (and sadly last of the year) is popular with club members. This is another romp through the local area near Rockland. June 7-8: Icebreaker Cruise: Pulpit Harbor. This first cruise of the season is one week later than usual. Cruisers generally arrive early to late afternoon. The RYC and the Rockland Rotary are hosting the Down East Challenge Race for the Annisquam / Eastern Yacht Clubs on July 27th. These Clubs have offered to make a donation to the Maine Maritime Trades Scholarship Fund in return for our help in providing Timers at the finish line and hosting the awards ceremony at The Atlantic Challenge from 5-7pm. Rotary is planning on providing Hot Dogs/Hamburgers & Soft Drinks. The Club is looking to assist by providing timers & a Boat at the finish line. 3

4 NOTE: New formula to determine PHRF A regular club meeting is being tentatively scheduled for August. Place and time will be determined later this month. Members who are here only during the summer months miss the general meetings during the off season. This will give these members a chance visit club officers and meet other members. Race Committee Update: The racing group met at Pope s Sail Loft on April 8. Seventeen members and non members attended. Dave Jones did an excellent job chairing the meeting. Items discussed: 1. Some Tuesdays still need members on the committee boat (non-racing club members who would like to volunteer can contact Dave Jones this is a fun job). Committee boat members meet at Gemini Canvas at 4pm 2. Race starts are planned for 5pm 3. Some races may be held outside the breakwater due to weather conditions at the option of the committee boat 4. Racing participants need to pay John LeMole $30 per boat for the season for his expenses operating JUKI 5. Most races will be windward / leeward configured 6. The ACF will be the designated spot for hamburgers / hotdogs (telling lies) after the race Members wishing to use this special math formula need to corroborate with their insurance company prior to the first race to confirm rate reductions. RYC Race Schedule June 10 September 16: Tuesday Races as described in the Race Committee Update June 21: Solstice Race (Thanks goes to Ian Kopp) Pre-Race Meeting: 10:00am, Atlantic Challenge Foundation building Start: 11:30am, between Rockland Breakwater Light and Can 1 Finish: between Rockland Breakwater Light and Can 1 Overview: The race will occur in the West Penobscot Bay area, with a planned elapsed time of 3-4 hours. The finish between Rockland Breakwater Light and Can 1 is intended to allow those racers who would like to join the Progressive Dinner (Broad Cove) to do so and 4

5 for those racers returning to Rockland to do so as well. Course Details: At the pre-race meeting, a course will be announced based on forecasted wind directions and speed. Course marks will be limited to the list below and the course will be announced based on the letters associated with each mark. If weather conditions warrant, the race course may be modified: ALL RACERS MUST MONITOR VHF CHANNEL 68(or alternate channel identified at pre-race meeting) TO LISTEN FOR POTENTIAL COURSE CHANGES. Any course changes will be transmitted by Extra Beat. Race Results: Every effort will be made to announce race results after the finish of racing; however, if for whatever reason that cannot happen, Race results will be announced after the June 24 th Tuesday Night Series race with details ed to all those racers who submit their addresses July 12 13: Rockland / Bayside Race (Thanks goes to Ken Priest) Pre-Race Meeting: 9:00am on Saturday, July 12 at the ACF. Start: 11:00am between the Rockland Breakwater and a committee boat. Weather conditions may change the start location. Course Details: The race will continue toward Northport keeping Seven Hundred Acre Island on the port side finishing between the spire on the NYC dock and a marker in the water. After the race: A BBQ is planned at the NYC later in the afternoon. Racers need to be prepared to raft or anchor on Saturday night. Solstice Race Continued: (Each boat is responsible for confirming latitude/longitude coordinates. Additionally, reports indicate that the U.S. Coast Guard has changed some of the marks in the southern portion of West Penobscot Bay; please note that the above descriptions are based on the year 2000 Chart #13302.) Timing Details: All boats must have either a watch with a second hand, GPS, or a stop watch if possible. At the pre-race meeting all captains will synchronize their watches to GPS time so that accurate finish times can be recorded. Extra Beat will start the race on VHF Channel 68 (or alternate channel identified at pre-race meeting) and at that time all captains will start their stop watches while Extra Beat records the exact start time. As boats finish the race, they will be responsible for recording their own finish 5 Rockland / Bayside Race Continued Sunday s race: The course back to Rockland will be the reverse route keeping Seven Hundred Acre Island on the starboard side. Entry Fee: $35 which goes toward trophies and dinner at Northport. PHRF: The race is open to RYC members who have a valid 2003 PHRF certificate. A special club trophy is in the works for a combined score of this race and the Around Islesboro Race held in September. Around Isleboro Race: This very popular race will be held in the early September. Information will be sent later this summer. Some of the RYC members consider this race the Al Hodsdon special.

6 RYC Lobster Picnic is scheduled for Saturday, September 27 at Beaver Lodge. RYC Members: Again, have a wonderful season on the water. If you do happen to hear of a great adventure or misadventure or a really juicy story (even fence sitting) send it along to Bruce Stedman. He needs some special tales for the holiday party in December. Ask members and they ll tell you how kind he is. 6
