The F 'C'S'LE Hunterdon Sailing Club, Inc. April 2015 Spring is Here! Welcome to the 2015 sailing season at HSC! With chilling temperatures and snow storm after snow storm it is hard to imagine that the sailing season would ever get here. The executive team has worked hard to create an exciting calendar for the upcoming season. We have a variety of events planned for all levels of sailing abilities from beginner to advanced sailor. Here are a few of the activities and initiatives for 2015: Sail Training: As in the past we will offer beginner Learn-to Sail (LTS) programs for Adults and Youth. Two Adult LTS sessions will be offered, one in late June, and one in mid-july. The Youth LTS classes will be offered at the end of June and the first few days of July. In addition, we will have coached practice sessions to offer our LTS graduates and beginner sailors added practice time. The sessions will be held on Wednesday nights July through August, coinciding with the Wednesday night Sunfish Twilight series. Again in 2015, we will offer a single session of a one-day Learn to Race class for those that want to race, but would like to understand the basics of racing prior to actually trying it. The session is scheduled for late May. Details and dates of all the programs can be found on the HSC website. The success of these programs in the past has been largely due to the members that volunteer their time to help with these programs. In 2015 we will once again be looking to our members for their support. See Which Won II: A key update to our equipment taking place this year will be the upgrading of our committee boat, the See Which Won. Angelo, Jay Number 482 and Gordon have led this effort, and details of the refit can be seen on page 6! General facilities updates: Additional Sunfish racks will be added to the back of the shed similar to the set that were built and installed on the side. A method to store the launching dollies is being worked on to better organize the equipment in the shed. Work Day: On Saturday April 18th we will have a work day to prepare the club s boats and equipment for the season. Please come out to help in whatever capacity you can to get the Club ready for the season. Race Committee Orientation: Following our workday activities we will be holding an orientation session to review Race committee duties and responsibilities. This is open to anyone wishing to attend. The session will review the Race Committee Guidelines that are published in our annual Handbook. The main topic areas are: preparation ashore, how to set the course, running the races, safety on the water, and returning to shore. There are many other activities planned for the season from racing to casual and fun sailing. Whether you are a serious racer or just want to enjoy some time on the water, we welcome and encourage your participation. Look to our newsletter for upcoming event announcements, and additionally you will be receiving notices throughout the season via . We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming work day and out on the water soon! --Ted Janulis, Commodore

A p r i l T h e F o c s l e P age 2 Spring Work Day Help to Get HSC's Fleet Ready for the 2015 Sailing Season! Friendly reminder, Saturday 4/18 is the HSC Spring Workday at the lake. We plan to start at 10 am and hopefully finish by 3 pm. Among the tasks are to launch the See Which Won II; prepare the remains of the old SWW for disposal; sort and check the Sunfish equipment; brace the sunfish racks; and clean and straighten the shed. During the day we ll make a dump run or two to get rid of any junk. Things to bring: Work gloves lunch and drink Things to bring if you have them on hand (you don't need to bring anything): Hand tools general wood-working; wrenches, pliers, etc and boat repair Small power tools (saw; drill; etc) Brooms, cleaning supplies, Bucket or container of tap water for cleaning. We have one generator lined up, but if someone else wants to bring one, let me know. There will be a few teams set up to: 1) float the SWWT and store the SWW; 2) brace the sheds; 3) checkout and repair the sunfish; 4) clean and straighten the shed; and 5) prepare and launch the safety boats. A few days out, the forecast is calling for scattered showers in the morning. We can work around a few showers, but if it looks like heavy rain, we may have to postpone it until the following Saturday. Watch your for HSC Notice updates. --Angelo Lovisa, Rear Commodore

A p r i l T h e F o c s l e P age 3 Member Spotlight Editor s Note: This marks the return of an old-favorite to the Fo c s le! The Member Spotlight column is a monthly feature highlighting one (or sometimes several) members. Expect to learn how your fellow sailors got involved in sailing, a few tales of sailing journeys away from HSC, and perhaps even a few sailing secrets to go faster! Interested in being in the spotlight? the editor at focsle@sailhsc.org HSC sailing is a family affair for many of our members, so for the inaugural Member Spotlight we spoke with the Stockwell family: How long have you been sailing? David started sailing in his teens, and Sharon has been sailing since 5 th grade. Andrew and Caroline also got an early start, Andrew since 7 th grade and Caroline since 3 rd. Captain Laddie has been sailing for five years! What was your first boat? David: I started sailing with my father on Cape Cod, on his Cape Dory Typhoon class The Moby Dick. Sharon: I sailed with my father also, on an O day Daysailer. He was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii and on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, which were really interesting places to learn to sail! Andrew and Caroline: Flying Scot 5097! What is your favorite thing about sailing at HSC? The lake and how peaceful it is on the water. It s so picturesque that you don t feel you are in New Jersey. We see the Stockwell s out on Sunfish, too, but the family boat is still your Flying Scot. What do you like best about the Scot? It s a great day sailer and we can fit the whole family and other friends on board easily. We once sailed with 8 people just fine. What was your proudest sailing moment? When we trailered it for the very first time and went to the 50 th Anniversary of the Flying Scot at Deep Creek Yacht Club in Maryland. Sharon s family from Virginia met us there for the week and we all had an absolute blast! It was so much fun to meet so many other Flying Scot sailors and watch many of them sail in kilts! Where is the most interesting place you have sailed? We have sailed our Flying Scot in several places but our favorite place is Provincetown Harbor on Cape Cod. We also had fun sailing a Hobie Cat in Barbados on vacation a few years ago. What advice do you have for a new sailor or club member? Keep coming up to the lake, participate in the programs offered and learn from others by crewing and practicing. What is your next sailing goal? Our next sailing goal is to not come in last place.

A p r i l T h e F o c s l e P age 4 Sunfish Fleet Report The 2015 sailing season is here, and it starts with Twilight racing (and pizza!)! Opening Night of the HSC sailing season is Wednesday, April 29 th. Races start at 6 pm. Club members interested in using Club-owned Sunfish are strongly encouraged to arrive early to reserve a boat and allow extra time for set-up before the races begin! The full Twilight RC schedule was distributed via ; if you plan to sail in the Twilight series, and have not signed up for a RC date, please contact Susan Mallows. Upcoming RC assignments are listed below: Date Day Event Week RC Chair RC Crew 29-Apr-15 Wednesday Twilight 1 1 Gordon Sell Angelo Lovisa 6-May-15 Wednesday Twilight 1 2 Ellen Greenhorn Dave Strome 9-May-15 Saturday SANJL Regatta # Ted Janulis Jim Sun 13-May-15 Wednesday Twilight 1 3 Nicky Einthoven Rich Henning 20-May-15 Wednesday Twilight 1 4 Jeff Titman Katie Kiernan 27-May-15 Wednesday Twilight 1 5 Mark Kaplan Linda Zarnett The Twilight series provides HSC members with two fleets to choose from: Championship Fleet and Challenger fleet. Please communicate your fleet preference to Susan Mallows before opening night, if you have not already done so. Recent Twilight series award winners will be automatically placed in the Championship fleet. We hope you will also join the Sunfish fleet on Opening Day, Sunday May 3 rd. Sunday racing begins at 1:30 pm. SANJL Regatta The Sailing Association of North Jersey Lakes (SANJL) hosts multiple Sunfish regattas each season. The first SANJL regatta of the year will be hosted by HSC on Saturday, May 9 th! This is a great opportunity to sail close to home with a large fleet of Sunfish sailors, as well as meet Sunfish sailors from nearby Clubs. The skippers meeting will be held at 10:00 am, with the first race at 10:30 am. Additional regattas are planned for Highland Lakes, Swartswood Lake, and Green Pond later this season. There are also two junior SANJL regattas planned for August. The full SANJL regatta schedule can be found at: See you on the water!

Dates for the practice sessions are July 8 - August Mike Wheeler, Membership Coordinator Force 5 Fleet #36 This is a big year for the Force 5 fleet, as Fleet #36 will be hosting the Force 5 Nationals at Spruce Run Reservoir on July 9 th 11 th! We expect 40 Force 5's to arrive on July 8th and the competition will be held at Spruce Run Reservoir on July 9 th, 10 th and 11 th. We will need a lot of help from HSC members to make this national regatta go smoothly! Please reach out to Jay Halsted, Force 5 Fleet Captain, if you would like to help with this event and watch for further announcements in the Fo c's'le newsletters as we approach July. With a national event coming to Spruce Run, we also expect to see a great turnout on Sundays for the Force 5 fleet! Last season brought several new and returning faces to the fleet, and we hope to see the same response this season. The Club has two Force 5 s that are available for use by HSC members during HSC events. If you are interested in trying the Force 5, please contact Jay Halsted, or any of the fleet members, and we can assist you in learning to rig and launch the Force 5. Please join us Work Day to help ready the Club for the season, and we hope to see many of you on the water for Opening Day, Sunday May 3 rd!

A p r i l T h e F o c s l e P age 6 See Which Won (Two) Refit Several HSC members have been working quite hard in the off-season to update our Race Committee boat. This project was made possible in part by the generous donation of a pontoon boat to the Club by member Linda Zarnett. Here s the latest update from Rear Commodore Angelo Lovisa: She s almost ready! It was a good day even if a little nippy. A crew ventured down to my house in the Ringoes farm country to work on the new boat. I wish to extend a special thank you to Jay Halsted, Ted Janulis, Jeff Titman, Gordon Sell, Mike Wheeler, Bill Seiple, and Chris Lovisa for spending their day removing the existing seats, rails, console, and engine from the boat and installing the existing SWW rails onto the See Which Won II. Most of the work has been completed. The few remaining items include installing the super structure to hold the race shapes, replacing a few missing bolts, attaching the ladder bracket, and transferring the anchor pulley from the old boat. There were a few interesting finds during the strip down. The old furniture included a pop-up changing room (pictured left), built in ice chest and a pair of earrings. There were no takers to test them out! The new See Which Won II configuration has space for sunbathing in the foredecks need to check the park s rules on speedos as well as room in the stern for the addition of a tiki bar also unlikely to be approved by the park. Future items to be planned during the year are the console drive and replacing the carpet. On Work Day the re-fitted boat will be floated and the old SWW put onto the trailer. The Park has graciously allowed us to use a boat spot in the back row for a couple months while we test out the See Which Won II.

A p r i l T h e F o c s l e P age 7 Jet 14 Fleet Report The Jet 14 Wren Regatta is June 7 th. There will be two races in the morning and the three club races in the afternoon. Currently, Jet 1129 and 1148 are for sale in the Spruce Run area and may be available for use in the regatta. Or, you could buy one and begin sailing in May. Both are very nice boats. Owner contact information can be found at Jet14.com in the classified section. Last Oct. 4 th the Packanack Lake Regatta was held and attended by HSC member David Veno (Jet 1150) and crew Justin Veno. In the morning there was a lot of rain, with no races. But, we hopefully waited. As predicted by the weather forecast, the rain stopped about noon and the skies gradually cleared until the sun broke out about 3:00. The RC was able to get three races in light fluky winds. For the regatta, David took a first, fourth and second for a second place overall. --David Veno, Fleet Captain Flying Scot Fleet #184 The Flying Scot fleet appears off to a good start with 14 boats! At least 3 of those boats are known to be starting the year with brand new sails, so it looks like it could be a competitive season. The Flying Scot Sailing Association is raffling off a brand new Scot for a $100 entry fee, so if you were thinking of a new Scot, now is the time! Details at The Challenge of the Lakes series with nearby Nockamixon Sail Club may make a comeback this year, dates are under discussion. Some other upcoming events to mark on your calendars: Full Moon Regatta at Monmouth Boat Club in Red Bank, NJ is 06/07/2015 Flying Scot NACs will be held in St Louis, MS starting 06/20/ Mark Kaplan, Fleet Captain

A p r i l T h e F o c s l e P age 11 Notes from the Vice Commodore The Vice Commodore has a great job in the summer. He really has nothing to do but sail and enjoy the many activities of the club. However, in the period leading up to Opening Day, he is quite busy! This note is a request to all to make the job easier now. 1. The VC creates and publishes the annual club handbook. He works with the officers and fleet captains, along with other staff members to review and edit all of the content. If you have seen something in the book that looks wrong, or you would like to see changed, let me know. 2. The handbook is scheduled to be mailed out on about April 20. It is mailed to members who have paid their dues by that date, so please go to: rmgmt/hsc/membership_registration_star t.php and join/renew now so that you get your copy before the season starts! 3. I know this sounds like nit picking, but please complete the family information on the last page. And please capitalize the first letters of name, etc. to make for easy reading on the roster. 4. Bill Seiple is busy completing the Race Committee assignments. Date preferences go to the first people to sign up. Most of you have already submitted your preferences. If you haven t, check with Bill at: Sgtseiple@gmail.com to get a date that is good for you. --Rich Baumann, Vice Commodore Officers Hunterdon Sailing Club Commodore Vice Commodore Rear Commodore Asst.
