A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 5 Sam Nelson & Walter Finne Junior Regatta July 26 th started off with very light, well no wind, and the first race was postponed until we were able to get on the water and sail to the race course. We started off in drifter conditions, but it filled in nicely after that. Five races were held with the racing very tight and many changes among the leaders throughout the day. Ethan Stanley, Chris Lovisa and Teo Whalberg all placed first in at least one race. Ethan Stanley won the day and took home the Sam Nelson award. Merritt Skeen won the Midget award. The race committee was outstanding especially given the difficult conditions -- thank you to Robert and Nick Reyes, Alexander Khutoretsky, and Ted Janulis. Place Skipper 1 Ethan Stanley 2 Chris Lovisa 3 Teo Whalberg 4 Cali Janulis 5 Ray Fisher 6 Jonah Skeen 7 Merritt Skeen

A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 6 SANJL Youth Regatta On August 2 nd SANJL and HSC hosted the annual Youth Open Regatta. Skippers from Mountain Lakes, Smoke Rise and Green Pond joined the juniors from HSC for very tight racing in moderate wind conditions. Five races were held with one throw out allowed. Nick Reyes figured out the wind early and won the regatta finishing 1 st with a score of 4 points. Drew Schell (Green Pond) took 2 nd place, Ethan Stanley (HSC) took 3 rd place, David Graf (Mountain Lakes) took 4 th and Teo Whalberg (Smoke Rise/HSC) was 5 th. Coaches of all the sailing programs represented assisted in running the regatta. These were Alec Manson, head coach at Mountain Lakes, Simon Bertocci head coach at Green Pond and Doug Brown head coach for HSC. In addition, Steve Manson and Derek Jackson both provided coaching in rigging and technique at the regatta. Other assistance was provided by Robert Reyes, Rob Schell and Susan Mallows-Brown. A big thank you to all the parents who made it possible for the Juniors to travel and attend. Junior Race Team The HSC Junior Race Team is underway, with lots of junior sailors on the water Wednesday nights! The Junior Race Team is open to all junior sailors (age 19 and under) that want to get better at racing sailboats. Practices are held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM; remaining practices for August are: August 6 th, August 13 th and August 20 th. After practice we encourage the Juniors to stay and sail (and beat the grown-ups!) in the regular Wednesday night races from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. And of course, the Junior Race Team is encouraged to join in the Wednesday night Pizza tradition after racing. The Junior Race Team is coached by Doug Brown, who has coached college sailing for the last 7 years. Whether you want to get ready to sail in college or just get faster to beat the old guys on Wednesday night, come out and sail with us! Register for Junior Race Team online at

A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 7 Force 5 Fleet Report The Summer Series has been very active for the Force 5 Fleet in July with a number of new participants. Rich Baumann maintains his lead in the series with an awesome display of sailing acumen, strategy and windsense. And, Bob Mattison has been very involved in this series with a new sail and consistently good performance currently ranked #2 in the series. We welcome Bill Seiple to the Force 5 Class Association. Bill sailed very competitively in the Spring Series using the club Force 5. He liked it so much he bought a used Force 5 from a previous club member and has been busy upgrading the rig with new hardware, lines and a new sail. Linda Howard has completed the repairs and upgrades on her Force 5 and has been able to participate consistently in the series, leaving the Club boat available for other participants. On that note: Dave Petersen, an accomplished member of the Flying Scot fleet, was a surprise participant on July 20 th. After a little coaching from Rich Baumann, Dave sailed quite well, securing two second places out of 3 races. We hope to see more of Dave later in the season! Ted Janulis, Hitoshi Tanaka and I continue to work on our skills, occasionally giving Rich a challenge to be first across the finish line. On that note, we would like to congratulate Hitoshi for his first 1 st place win last weekend July 27 th. High Five Hitoshi!!! Reminder to the Fleet: The 2014 Force 5 Fleet Association North American Championship is scheduled for August 21 23, sponsored Fleet 106 at the Port Huron Yacht Club in Michigan. --Jay Halsted, Force 5 Fleet Captain

A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 8 Force 5 How To: Storing and Repairing Your Boat Safely How to work on your Force 5 without asking your neighbor for a hand lifting, shifting and flipping? Problem Solved! This is a good solution to working on the boat AND on the trailer. All it takes are 4 hooks in the ceiling of the garage (appropriately anchored) and some soft lines or lifting straps. If you get your turns right on the lifting straps, it's a one man job to lift the boat off the trailer and turn it anywhich-way in order to get the job done. If more stability is required, slip a couple sawhorses under the boat and transfer the weight of the boat onto the horses. This is the easiest way I've found to work the top, bottom and to get to those odd angles that are required to repair the centerboard trunk. One key learning point in this arrangement is to attach a preventer line between the two lifting straps. If you do not have the preventer in place, the curvature of the Force 5 hull will separate your lifting straps to the end of the hull - and beyond, providing an opportunity to practice your gel coat skills. Note to self: The preventer line is key! Happy Sailing! --Jay Halsted

A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 9 Summer Series Racing So far, eight Scots have participated in the summer series, with an average of four boats on the line each week. The fleet s newest racers, Tom & Kathy Sweeney and Angelo & Chris Lovisa, have already qualified for the series and are getting better every week --- watch out! The summer series concludes this month, and the standings are tight. Mark & Ronit Kaplan are currently leading the fleet, with an impressive 91% score to date! But Dave & Kristin Petersen, Gordon Sell and Mike Ambrose are all close behind, just one good Sunday away from the top! Flying Scot Fleet Report Flying Scot fleet veterans Bill Foster and David Stockwell have also made appearances this summer, and we hope to see them back on the water again soon! Saratoga Lake Regatta The 28 th Annual Flying Scot Regatta held by Fleet 161 on the beautiful Saratoga Lake will be held on August 8 th -10 th! Last year the regatta drew 19 boats and received rave reviews. NOR, general information, and registration forms are at Visiting sailors may pitch tents on the grounds and use the newly remodeled showers in the club house. All meals will be provided at the regatta, starting from Friday night through regatta closing on Sunday. Wife-Husband Championship The Flying Scot Wife-Husband Championship will be held close to HSC this year! The Championship is scheduled for August 23 rd and 24 th at Sayville Yacht Club in Blue Point, NY. Dave & Kristin Petersen attended last year s Championship and report that it was great event both on and off the water! Greater NY District Championship Mark your calendars for our District s Championship regatta this fall! The Greater NY District Championship will be held at nearby Monmouth Boat Club in Red Bank, NJ on October 11 th & 12 th.

A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 10 Blast from the Past (This is the 4 th article in a year-long series featuring historic photos to commemorate HSC s 50 th Anniversary) From Charlie Engler: This month s pictures were taken by Charlie s son, Chad, during Hunterdon Sailing Club s summer season in 1975!

A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 11 The Little Brown Jug July 4 th, 2014 We usually have many pictures of boats from several fleets, taken from locations all over the lake to include in this annual article about the LBJ pursuit handicap race. As Race Committee Chair, I did bring two good cameras out in the hopes of taking this year s great photos. Here is the bad news. It was raining horizontally for most of the race, so, I left my cameras in their waterproof bags. It was an interesting race with much discussion beforehand. The usual plan is to have our fleets starting in a sort of staggered sequence, with the slower boats starting first and the faster boats starting later. In theory, if everyone sails equally well, they should all finish at the same time after 100 minutes. The theory has never been proven, to my knowledge. The combination of high winds and rain caused the participants to start considering their own safety and they wisely chose the easiest boat to right after any capsizes: The Sunfish. One start was all we needed and our Race Committee of Mike Schott, Ellen Greenhorn, and Dominick and Cathy Charowsky kept close eyes on the eleven sailors who ventured out. It was exciting to watch! If only I had a waterproof camera. The top finishers were: 1. Doug Brown 2. Jay Halsted 3. Bill Seiple 4. Jeff Titman 5. Dave Petersen The photo above was taken after the weather cleared. Doug is on the left, taking the Little Brown Jug home, again! The weather cleared just after we finished the race and we had a great picnic in the sun. Melissa Halsted provided a fine dessert to commemorate her husband Jay s birthday. --Rich Baumann

A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 12 Spruce Run-Around First off, many thanks to Mike, Ellen, Ted and Gordon for helping make this event happen. Ted for his guidance; Gordon for his passion; Mike & Ellen for making the logistics happen during race day. It was a perfect sailing day for a fun-race! There were a couple learning points from the race both in & out of water: 1. Mike can not only throw a man-overboard but grill a mean hotdog after, 2. Ellen is perfectly capable of collecting all the buoys by herself post-race, 3. Never kayak with a hole in your kayak (lesson courtsey of a non-hsc park goer), 4. Don t bring a Brit along, they will just nap on the committee boat, 5. And never, EVER, fall off either Jay s boat or the Sweeney s boat they won the Razzie award for most likely to kill your man overboard. The race itself consisted of a slightly disorganized but passionate Le Mans start with a goal to earn as many points as possible during the race in order to collect cards at the end. The highest poker hand won. Points were awarded on the following: 6 buoys - one point per buoy name and one point for guessing each riddle o 3 Buoy names: Cheese, Made & Backwards, Riddle: Edam o 3 place names: Shanghai, Singapore & Rotterdam, Riddle: 3 largest ports Man overboard: Perform a man overboard with a the committee boat Potential Extra Point Challenges: o Words written on the pump house o Rounding of goose island o Extra points for sunfish or force 5 with 2 people- Pia Lord & Rex!! o Additional sailors on Flying Scots/ open fleets Gordon Sell loaded up! o Sailing backwards 100ft pass the SWW judges a job well done by everyone! o Points for passing the noodle: boats must write their name on a noodle and pass it to another boat an active point maker in the challenge except for the one boat that lost their noodle! No names And now the item we have all been waiting for: The winners of the Spruce Run-Around were In first place Kathy Sweeney, in second place Kristin Petersen, and in third place Noreen Drucker! Although given the Sweeney s tendency towards leaving their man-overboard floating forlornly in the water, I would call it a tie! --Christine Ake, Open Fleet Co-captain

A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 13 Park Liaison Report We have had some complaints about misuse of the area in and around the public launch ramp in front of our shed. The area from the shed to the row of wood posts near out bulletin board is intended for launching. It should not be used for rigging, repairing or dolly storage except for maybe the ten feet closest to the posts and the grassy area in front of the shed. The water adjacent to that land should not be used for moorings. Thanks, in advance for making our launching less congested. I am well aware that HSC members are not the only boaters who crowd the space. --Rich Baumann Jet-14 Gravy Bowl Regatta Saturday, August 9th! Skippers First NOON 3-5 races are scheduled, with awards to the top 3 skippers and crews. Expert Race Committee! Registration: $10 per boat. 15 A u g u s t 2014 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 15 For Sail Sunfish and Trailer for Sale This 1969 Alcort Sunfish (Hull # 78403) has scuffs and scratches befitting its age, but it is basically sound and seaworthy, and comparable to many of the metal-rail club boats. In 2000, it was refitted with a "new style" rudder and has a plastic racing centerboard. The included racing sail has a window and is in fair condition. The trailer has a winch, working lights, and the lightly used tires were replaced about 5 years ago, and there is a spare. The boat has a NJ title. I'm initially offering the boat and trailer to HSC members for $650 or best offer. Find us on the Web! Have you seen the re-designed HSC website? Sunfish Worlds Boats for Sale For the first time in 3 years, special-edition Sunfish Worlds boats are being built by Laser Performance. These boats will be used by the 72 competitors at the Sunfish Worlds in October. Triton Yachts has made these boats and will offer them for sale, along with a Seitech dolly, for $4,295.
