This is for all those who expressed interest at the beginning of the season to be kept up to date on the sailing program at the PVYC. We have the season off to a great start this year, thanks to some great sailing wind, new committee boat/race gear, and the Sunfish Wed. evening races. I thought I would share some photos taken from the RC boat so far. The Sunday series standings to date are also attached. For the competitors: Thanks for your support and patience with the new race management methods and courses put in place this year. We've had some great races with some very tight competition between many boats. All of the race results are posted on the PVYC web page at: Congratulations Bill Collins, who won the July 4th First Place Trophy. A peek at the race results show this was close competition. Interesting, Bill didn't place first in any race, but he was consistently steady and his collective times carried the day for him. While we haven't had enough boats to have dinghy class races yet, some races with dinghies and cruisers were started together as "Fleet" class races. If you have a dinghy, including sunfish, come on out and compete against the big boats! There will be a "Fleet Class" champion 2011 trophy at the end of the season that - can be won by a boat from either class. Just a reminder, the races start at 1:00 p.m. every Sunday. The course and any instructions for the day are posted on the PVYC porch bulletin board by noon. No skippers meetings. We are aiming to manage each individual race so that all boats complete the course between 30 to 60 mins. We are striving to end the last race by 4:00 p.m. and complete the awards by 5:00 p.m. If you haven't come out yet this year, finish fixing up that boat and come on out! We welcomed a new competitor from the Springfield Yacht Club (Tom - O'Day 222 ) to join us on the course on Sunday. Likewise, a competitor from Shennecossett Yacht Club (former PVYC member Pat Kevane) will be joining us on Wednesday for the Sunfish races. Pat is a sail maker and makes sunfish sails. Check out his web page The Wednesday Sunfish races are on. We start at 6:30 p.m. and try to finish up the last race by 7:45 p.m. It has been a pleasure to watch the program start. And, I am glad to see some youth participants out there too. Note, if you have a small dinghy that is not a sunfish and the handicap is 99.6 or higher, come on out with the sunfish fleet on Wed. Evenings. There be no handicapping, but you are welcome to compete. For everybody. The PVYC has two sunfish sailboats for use by the members. The hulls and parts are marked with white paint PVYC 1 and PVYC 2. The sails, masts, dollies, rudders and dagger boards are kept on the wooden racks near the boat ramp. We will be setting them up and leaving them set up on the shore line each Friday afternoon and breaking them down on Sunday Evening. (We have two more Sunfish hulls and are scrounging for parts to get them up and running too.) Use is first come, first serve. If you are new to sailing and would like to learn how to sail a sunfish, let me know and I will try to arrange a time when you can meet me or another sailor to go out with you and show you the ropes. There is a link on the PVYC sailing page to a free sailing on-line orientation course. If you have never sailed and would like to get some first hand experience going out on a larger boat and seeing what it is all about, let me know. I hope to have a volunteer from the sailing program with a bigger boat meet you at the main dock on a Wed. evening where you can see the rigging preparations and take a sail.
