SECRETARY'S REPORT: Bill noted that Bill Dernhart, a guest of Dave Williams at the recent convention, has joined the Club and is sending in this dues. His first meeting will be in September. 32nd NE Clubs Conference: Ron Neilson is pursuing all media outlets for publicizing the event. Dave and Tom will be going to the conference site to measure the layout, size of the tables, and space available for the vendors. Mystic Anyone: Interest was shown by some of trying to arrange a tour of inner sanctums of Mystic's ship models collection, et al, this summer. If you are interested, contact Tom Kane. Note: The paint chips/paint was from Lowe's not Home Depot as reported last issue. Tom gave us a look at the rudder mechanism. Being true to the original model required restoration of the moveable rudder system. Not only is the rudder moveable, it actually operates from the pilot house wheel. In the first picture you will see a water barrel on the roof. The covers a screw holding the lower housing in place but making future access to the rudder mechanism possible. Note that all parts, with the exception of the wheel house, the original parts of the model. Nice job, Tom! The pulley system restored. 2

4 Pete Carlin, Line seizing for the Emma C. Berry Pete's adapted String-a-Long. Pete gave us a demonstration of how he modified the String-a-Long to get the required length of seized line for the Berry. He uses alligator clips a weights to maintain tension and note the spool of thread attached at the bottom of the Cclamp to maintain a continuous feed. He also use a product-rainy's Dave's Flexament, a durable permanent seal that dries clear and remains flexible, even when dry. It is widely used in fly tying. 5 Bill Strachan, Confederacy's initial framing I'm making some modifications on this build. Stem, Keel and Stern post were re-made using pear. Pear was also used for the shadow box frames. I was prepared for this, and I fully embrace the blotchiness. As matter of fact, my blotchiness ranks right up there with Ron's Maybe even better! 5

15 Dave Dinan's Shop Tips #1 X-Acto has upgraded the #11 blade. The Z blade is the sharpest they have ever made. Bit pricy though, a 100 box runs about $ #2 Problem: Dave's Corvette funnel (see last issue) need a clinker screen. This means 10 to 12 soft solders to create a screen about the size of a dime. Solution: Using Oatley's H20(5) water soluable past and TIK solder (melts at 275 degrees), Dave set the joints to be soldered, on an appropriate surface, applied the paste and set the two pieces that will form the joint as close to one another as possible without actually touching each other. He have a minute sliver of TIK solder and placed it as closed to the joint as possible, but again, to actually touching the metal. On the other side of the joint, Dave brought the soldering iron as close to the solder joint as needed to create the flow of the solder into the joint. Wallah! The heat sucks the solder into the joint with out any contact. 15
