FLYING FIFTEENS UPDATE Difficult to remember the last time we saw the classic sea breeze pattern, easterly dying by 1200hrs and then a line of breeze traversing the river giving 10 knots of westerly by 1300hrs then a slight tick to the south during the afternoon and building to about 15 knots. Great conditions for sailing any class particularly with a couple of reaching legs thrown in. Jen and Andrew (Yes, No, Maybe) made the most of it by winning the first 2 races on consistency and Team Jerwood (yes, Tim is an honorary Jerwood) fastest for all races in Ineffable. If you do not currently sail a Flying Fifteen and would like to see what all the hype is about Try a Fifteen Day is on this Sunday 22 February at 0900hrs near the cranes on the western hardstand. your Coffee Pointers submissions to; marketing@sopyc.com.au HOME

4 WEDNESDAY TWILIGHT SHARK CAT SUPPORT CREW NEEDED CheckPoint is used by the Club as the primary support boat for all its series long sailing events, skippered by a permanent employee and supported by member volunteers. Wednesday afternoon (being a work day for most) is difficult to roster members the same way we do for Saturdays and Sundays and therefore requires a call out for volunteers. We currently have a vacancy for a volunteer/s member to act as support crew for Wednesday Evening Twilight. If you have the time available and can offer one or two Wednesday afternoons a month, please contact the Fiona Henderson owgadmin@sopyc.com.au BILLY RUN - SATURDAY 14 MARCH Preparations are now underway to make this another successful event. Originally scheduled to coincide with Royal Perth Yacht Club s hosting of the Algal Bloom the Billy Run has resumed its place as a stand alone event and start at the earlier time of hrs for the first fleet allowing plenty of time to enjoy the island in the afternoon. Presentation of results will take place at the Rottnest Hotel where fun and good times are sure to be had by all. If not done so already, members intending to take part are strongly encouraged to book their moorings without delay. As always, accommodation on the island, land and water, are at a premium. 5 JETTY 4-5 REPLACEMENT PROJECT AND HARDSTAND UPGRADE SWAN RIVER TRUST APPLICATION The final drawings lodged with the Swan River Trust as part of our application to replace jetty 4 and jetty 5 and upgrade the hardstand (slipway) are on display on the noticeboard in the east foyer of the Club. SRT have submitted a draft report to the Minister approving the project with conditions. Stakeholders and the general public were given the opportunity to comment on the report. Comments closed on 30 January. SoPYC lodged a submission commenting on a number of conditions amongst which were the requirement to enter into a new lease. We have lodged our objection to this condition on the basis that we have a valid, existing lease until The Finance Committee are preparing the final costings of the proposed project with a recommendation to the Management Committee. A meeting of members will be called in the next few weeks to consider the proposal and a recommendation from the Management Committee. SWAN RIVER SAILING TRAINING PROGRAM & STATE WOMEN S KEELBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP will be hosting the State Women s Keelboat Championship on behalf of Swan River Sailing on Saturday 16 May. As a lead up to this, Swan River Sailing are running a Women s Keelboat Training Program with the first theory session scheduled for Tuesday 24 February. The program consists of four theory sessions covering Sail Trim, Weather and Wind Shifts, On Course Tactics, and Starting Strategy and Techniques and then offers two on-water training sessions in the Foundation 36 s which is ideal for teams wishing to compete in the Women s State Keelboat Championship. The training program flyer and registration form can all be accessed at asp. Women s Saturday, 16 May Registrations for the training program are required by Thursday 19 February in order for Swan River Sailing to determine numbers and confirm the course. 6 OFFSHORE RACING UPDATE IBERIA, CARNAC AND ATS This weekend saw 3 big days of racing offshore in the Bluewater and Offshore Trophy Series. It all started with the Iberia race on Friday night with 16 yachts taking on the 110 mile race to Busselton as the delivery race for this years Geograph Bay Race Week. The race was in good conditions with Bunbury sailed in one leg, however for those returning on Saturday the race home was a case of white knuckles all the way. SoPYC had two entries in Peter Vlaar s Farrago and Andrew Dawson s Knott Dreaming. Farrago took out second place in both IRC and YAH in a solid 10 boat fleet, pipped by Tony Carter s Just Cruising in both results. Andrew Dawson had a forestay failure late on Saturday afternoon and had to retire. Saturday saw the Carnac Island race conducted in lively southerlies with Chris Higham s Numbers Game being the sole SoPYC entrant in a fleet of 10. Numbers Game picked up a third in IRC and a second on YAH. Farrago arrived back in Fremantle after midnight on Saturday night and in what must be acknowledged by all as a determined effort, fronted up with their weary crew for the OHS Around The Sound Race on Sunday morning. They joined the fleet of 14 to enjoy far more pleasant winds than that faced in their return journey from Busselton. The ATS race had three SoPYC entrants with Numbers Game joining Farrago and Tim Harrison s Vision taking on a new challenge in double handed racing. For Tim it was a day to experience the challenges of a two up race format and he was all grins still as they came into the pens at around 5 pm. Farrago took out first on IRC and the second on YAH and Numbers Game took out a third in IRC and first on YAH. Due to the clash with the Iberia race affecting race numbers the RO combined all the fleets into one course and started them together enabling an overall result to be awarded for the 14 boat fleet. Farrago took out second on IRC and Numbers Game took out first place on YAH ensuring SoPYC got amongst its own flags for the day. COMMENTS SOUGHT ON CHANGES TO BOAT MOORING IN WA WATERS Western Australian boat owners are being given the chance to participate in a review of the use and management of boat moorings in WA. The Department of Transport (DoT) launched a two stage consultation process, with the release of the Mooring Management Discussion Paper, which explores possible improvements to the systems and laws relating to boat moorings in State waters. DoT Marine Safety General Manager Ray Buchholz said the aim of reviewing and streamlining mooring regulations was to develop a fairer, more equitable system that better meets the needs of the growing boating community in WA. As the number of registered vessels increases in WA the demand for moorings also grows so there is a need to look at the current system with a view to maximising resources and improving efficiency, Mr Buchholz said. There are approximately 1800 approved moorings in WA and 97,000 registered recreational vessels. Mr Buchholz said the discussion paper canvases a range of ideas for consideration including the short-term, casual use of recreational moorings to maximise their use. A system is working well on Rottnest Island and it would address the current situation on the Swan Canning Riverpark Mooring Control Areas where moorings are left vacant and not utilised for long periods of time, Mr Buchholz said. These moorings could be better optimised by boat owners on a casual basis, while maintaining priority use for licence holders. DoT is seeking to create a more workable single set of mooring regulations. Currently moorings are subject to two acts of Parliament - the Shipping and Pilotage Act 1967 and the Western Australian Marine Act Comments on the discussion paper need to be made before May 8, 2015 and a second round of consultation will be held in June 2015 to gain feedback on the proposed changes. To register for an information session, view the discussion paper or provide feedback visit or contact DoT on your Coffee Pointers submissions to; marketing@sopyc.com.au HOME

8 Updated disposal options for unwanted beacons The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is urging owners of emergency beacons to dispose of their unwanted beacons correctly. AMSA spokesperson Lisa Martin said emergency beacons can inadvertently activate if they are not correctly disposed, which often occurs when beacons are thrown in the rubbish and end up in tips. When a beacon is activated, AMSA is alerted and a search and rescue response may be initiated, Ms Martin said. Search assets and personnel tasked to look for beacons which are inadvertently activated may then be unavailable for a real emergency, she said. Beacon owners should be aware that there has been a change in beacon disposal arrangements with Battery World. Free disposal is no longer available at Battery World stores and a small fee will now apply. Battery World marine spokesperson Vince Petruzzella said the company started collecting the unwanted beacons in 2007 as part of the transition to the 406MHz digital beacon. Our relationship with AMSA and the importance of correct beacon disposal is still very important to us but due to the increasing number of beacons being disposed and associated labour involved, stores will now charge a small fee, he said. Australia has the highest usage of beacons per capita in the world with over 350,000 beacons registered in AMSA s database. Beacon owners can still dispose of unwanted beacons responsibly in the following ways: Contact your local battery store. A small fee may apply. Contact your local maritime safety agency. They may be able to provide disposal advice. Disconnect the beacon battery according to the manufacturer s instructions. Then contact your local waste management facility to ask about environmentally friendly disposal options. A small fee may apply. Anyone who disposes of their unwanted beacon should update their details with AMSA to de-register their beacon. Details can be updated online at or by phoning AMSA on SAIL THE LEEUWIN Are you up for the challenge of applying your sailing skills on a tall ship? Sailing a dinghy like a 420, 29-er or a Laser is quite different than sailing a three-masted barquentine tall ship. Well there are some similarities like the natural elements that you as a sailor have to deal with regardless of which boat you are sailing - the weather or current conditions will always be the same. But the question is are you up for the experience of handling a ship that is 55 metres long, 33 metres tall, with a total of 16 sails and 40 other shipmates?
