Consequently the meeting was cancelled. It was Mother s Day weekend, which I am certain had a negative effect attendance. The only matter of importance that needs discussion is the budget for this year. Although we were not able to act on it either at the board level, or the general membership level, I can assure the membership that the budget is well within reasonable limits-in fact we will probably spend less than last year and revenues will be about the same. Financially we are in good shape. The board has audited the books, and they are in order. The board will submit the budget to the membership for review and approval the next time we meet. June is the month for graduations and weddings, not to mention the beginning of vacation season. June is usually a month that portends a light attendance at our monthly meeting. According to our by laws, we need only hold general membership meetings four times a year. Given those two factors, and with nothing urgent on the horizon, I am canceling the General Membership and Board meetings for June. The next General Membership meeting is scheduled for Saturday, July 11th. Until we meet again in July, enjoy the sailing season, sail well, sail happily and sail safely. The deadline for items for the Nautical News is the 20 th of each month. Send to Jim Harvey (ja_harvey@yahoo.com). The editor reserves the right to edit submissions, based on space available. Jim Forbes, Commodore
2 Power Squadron Report I hope everyone sees this report before June 7 th so they can be at the Ken Reilly Memorial Springer event. Talked to the SpringerMeister a day or so ago and he has a two part course to challenge the Springer Skippers with. Got two 50 lb. Barges ready and a 100 lb. For the Super Springers to work against. And for the Non-Springer class he has determined that the diameter of your prop or props (3 total or combined) puts you on the Big Barge. I think I will leave the Southampton in the truck as it seems to be a bit underpowered for that size barge. There was a definite lack of interest for a meeting for May so we declared it a work party day and did a few chores around the clubhouse. Finally got the Margie in her permanent display area by moving some of the other boats around. During the cleanup found several boxes of Club gear (Jackets, Tee shirts, Hats) so will be figuring out if we need to order any replacements and in what quantities in the next months. Talk to you Officers so all of us have a clue as to your wishes. During the Pleasure Boat and Classical Gas Day last month there was a point brought up that needs some clarification. In the Event Schedule the last Sunday of the month is designated as a Classic Gas Day. But it is also a Run what you Brung Day also. The CG folks are more than willing to share the lake with anyone who shows up. One comment we heard several times was to effect of there were more boats lakeside than the regular Sunday runners had seen for sometime. We managed to run 4 Runabouts, 1 PT Boat, and several tugs plus the Gas Stuff. So the Welcome Mat is out for Sunday Fun Run every month during the Classic Gas Sundays. Keep in mind the Tug Weekend is a One-Day Event this year and is on July 26 th. Tugboats doing real work, barge handling, shiphandling, navigation. So getting a bit of operation in beforehand is a good idea in my mind. Lee Duvall, PSO 2
3 April Meeting: 17th and 18th Century Ship Models from the Kriegstein Collection, by Arnold Kriegstein, Ph.D. Dr. Arnold Kreigstein and his twin brother, Henry, have spent more than 30 years building a collection of model ships built, for the most part, by the shipwrights who also built the full-size ships. Models in the Kriegstein collection are intricately built, beautifully executed, painted and carved warships. The brothers have done meticulous research that has added to surviving knowledge of 17 th and 18 th century ship models. Dr. Kriegstein showed slides of the collection, which also includes period section models of ships and boats, period paintings of model ships, and drawings depicting modeled ships at sea. 17th and 18th Century Ship Models from the Kriegstein Collection, by Arnold and Henry Kriegstein. Pier Books and Dupont Communications, Pier Books, Inc, PO Box 5, Piermont, NY ; 2007, 215 pages, hardcover, US$85. TROLLING THE WEB High-Tech Wood R/C Models and Pond Yachts Designed by Trans-Atlantic Sailor R/C sailboats and toy sailboats from Tippecanoe Boats 3
4 Instead of selling look-alike plastic boats, Tippecanoe Boats maintains the tradition of building beautiful wooden sailing boats and offering them as easily built and affordable kits. Marrying the highest-tech modern materials with very light but durable woods creates ultra-high performance, beautiful model boats. Radio Controlled Sailboats: Fast and elegant yachts from a 27-inch sloop to a 50-inch Marblehead style one design class sloop and a 50-inch trimaran. Kits include everything except paint, varnish, and AA batteries. Free-Sailing Sailboats: Traditional free-sailing pond yachts and toy sailboats. In 1981, founder Will Lesh sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in a 24 foot sailboat he had built himself from western red cedar. After departure from Chesapeake Bay, he reached the Azores after 21 days of sailing, and Gibraltar 12 days later. Watch the video of sailing action at Lake Padden in Bellingham, Washington. The running chatter by the kids adds to the fun. Mary Rose Cassa, Vice Commodore Ode to Three Odd Little White Boats The 36-R invitational on May 2 wasn t as damp as we feared, and eight sailors braved the unsettled weather. This race was important because it offered valuable practice time for our members who are going to England in May: Jeff, Colleen, Julie, and Mike. Jeff has built three new boats that are the epitome of travel-ready removable keels for easy carrying, and simple rigging for easy setup. The three boats #35, #37, and #39 are virtually identical, with white hulls. To make the afternoon go a little faster, we sailed in threes. During one board, all three little white boats (with their odd sail numbers) set off down the lake at the same time. I couldn t resist making up a song Ode to Three Odd Little White Boats #35, #37, and #39 (to the tune of Little White Duck ) We re three little white boats sailing on the water, Three little white boats doing what we ought-ter. Bumped in-to the side of the pond; Bounced right off and we said, We re gone! We re three little white boats sailing on the water, Splish, splash, splosh! (Underlined phrases run together to match the rhythm of the tune) Mary Rose Cassa, Vice Commodore Crows Nest Remember. No Board or general membership meetings in June. Jim Harvey, Editor 4
