All of the Canberra boats performed exceedingly well and the YRS entrants represented the club excellently. The series consisted of nine heats over four days and fortunately throughout those races the weather was kind. On the first day of racing we faced a consistent light breeze, and an invitation race and heat one and a very large course. Day two was also very light and racing was delayed until the wind finally emerged. The third day was also light in the morning and because of a different course layout this left many of the Canberra sailors disorientated until a moderate breeze came in after lunch. On the final day there were still two heats to go and many places still to be gained and lost. On this day we experienced 18 knot breezes and this meant that we could finally show off what Canberra had to offer. The spiral fleet gave many of the Canberra boats an exposure to a higher level of competition. There were many battles fought throughout the series and many standout performances. Tessa Gavin had an exhilarating first race. When a strong westerly came up unexpectedly she was easily able to overtake six boats in one downwind leg and hold this place to the finish. Hugh Gallagher also had a brilliant race. After covering basically all of the fleet in the first work of race five he landed himself a place in the top ten boats. Josh Owen had a tough first day of sailing as after the invitation race he came ashore only to find that his boat was leaking! He did race heat one but still the problem continued as it isn t fun sailing with a sinking boat. With overnight repairs Josh s boat was able to race for the rest of the regatta with a taped up venturi and a sponge as a bailor. During the regatta there were many battles between the Canberra boats, Spencer McMahon, Lachlan Dally and Rory Gleeson seemed like they were almost stuck together as they spent almost the entire regatta in close proximity. Coach Craig was almost out of sight of the fleet from the word go, this performance inspiring many of the junior sailors. continued on page 4

Commodore s Column The start of the second half of the summer season has not seen any reduction in the high level of activity at the Club, on the water or ashore! We have seen the completion of a great holiday season for the Sailing School, successful conduct of the Chief Minister s Regatta and Canberra Southern Cross Club Cup, and still increasing numbers participating in Club events. At the same time, we have grasped the opportunity to open the CYC Boat Shop following the closure of Bartondale Marine. Our Club Manager Matt Owen put in a really outstanding effort to plan this venture and to make it a reality. Duty members will have noticed that new doors have been installed on the Tower ground floor, allowing the storage of buoys and tackle on the previously completed trailers, greatly reducing effort and risk involved in moving and handling these. Our thanks are due to Howard Faulks, Mike Walker, Steve Cartwright and Craig Davidson for the very significant effort they put into this project. With regard to other facilities developments, the CSCC continues to review options for redevelopment of the yacht club site, and finalisation of arrangements for our foreshore boat hardstand, finger wharf and hoist are continuing, involving the CYC, NCA and ACT Government. Over January many of our members travelled to participate in major events, representing firstly themselves but also our Club, and brought credit on both. In addition to some excellent results, including National and State Championship winners, there were sound performances by others, and no doubt much enjoyment and experience gained through participation. However, I want to make special mention of our young and very young sailors who participated in the Spiral National Championships in January, not just on their excellent performances, but particularly on their conduct. This group, highly identifiable all over the foreshore and on the water in their bright red CYC Sailing Academy rashees, received perhaps the highest award of all. A race official sought out an adult accompanying them to comment to the effect that the group displayed the highest standard of sportsmanship that he had seen. This is a great compliment to the young people involved, their parents and mentors, and particularly to their coach and team leader Craig Davidson. Congratulations to you all. I am sure that we would like to think that similar standards apply to all our sailing at the CYC. Pleasingly I think that is generally the case, and it is important that we all strive for this. Our fleet is very diverse in boat types and in the ages and experience of our sailors, and the potential for difficulties is high. We all need to recognise this, and while maintaining high levels of competitiveness, ensure that we do our best to display sportsmanship and reasonableness in our actions, particularly toward those who are most vulnerable. People will make mistakes, be unsure of the rules, be distracted and not aware of others at times, or misjudge the performance of their and other boats these will always be factors in sailing. Our challenge is to respond in appropriate ways, particularly toward the inexperienced and the young, to keep any heated emotions on our own boats, and to use the protest process if warranted. In 2009 the Club will have its 50th birthday. Leading up to this our Club Historian, Peter Forster, is working to produce a book documenting and illustrating the Club s life to that time. The first chapter of that history, covering the first ten years, is planned to be released before midyear. From my knowledge of what has gone into this project and preview of the basic material I feel sure that everyone will find it absorbing, somewhat amazing, and of real interest. Major events over the coming months include the End of Twilight Racing Dinner, the Access Dinghy National Championships, the America s Mug Champions of Champions Regatta, our Presentation Night Dinner and the start of the Winter Series. then it will be on to the next year in the Club s calendar, and planning is already underway. Now is the time to make any additional suggestions to Committee members for improvement in our program or how we conduct it. Commodore Graham Giles Diversity One Aspect Jan-Mar 3

34th Twofold Bay Regatta Spiral National Titles Mel Davidson had a brilliant performance also, completing all of the goals she d set for herself. Spencer Scutt had a brilliant second race battling against the leaders to come eleventh. James Slattery a more experienced sailor also had a good regatta having many consistent places. Chris Eddes also had a consistent score card with many top ten places earning him his title of Junior National Champion. All of the Youth Racing Squad would like to thank Matt Owen and the Club for generously helping financially towards our accommodation and registration fees for the regatta. This money then enabled many more of the Spiral sailors from the club to go and participate. We would also like to thank Craig Davidson for not only helping many of the sailors to train beforehand but also for just giving us so much encouragement throughout the competition. And lastly we would like to thank John Gallagher and all of the attending parents for finding us accommodation, taking us to the regatta and generally looking after us over the long weekend. After the regatta was over many of the Canberra sailors collected an unbelievable amount of places. Craig Davidson, the Youth Racing Squad s coach was awarded First place in the Senior Division and went home as the National Champion of spiral sailing as he won the regatta overall. Chris Eddes won the Junior Division for the second year in a row and also won third in Handicap. Andrea Garvey won second in the Junior Division and third in the Ladies Division. Spencer McMahon came third in the Junior Division, fourth went to Lachlan Dally, fifth to Rory Gleeson and sixth to Hugh Gallagher who also won the Handicap Award. Congratulations to all of the Canberra fleet for competing so successfully and having a great time. The 34th annual Twofold Bay Yacht Club regatta was run over the 16/17 February The event was well represented by the Canberra Yacht Club with the club representing in almost every division. The Saturday saw 2 races held with the first race being shortened due to the lack of wind. It reminded everybody of the joyous times sitting in the middle of LBG waiting for the next puff of wind to get moving again. As everybody passed the finish line the wind started to blow again which helped everybody make it back to shore for lunch. Unfortunately for all boats in Division 3, a B14 had made it so far around the course that the shortened course that the rest of the fleet sailed was incorrect and everybody ended up with a DNF. The afternoon race saw much better conditions with about knots of wind and a 1.5 metre swell. The evening festivities were run exceptionally well by the TFBYC with a sensational 2 course meal and a great social gathering of all of the classes. Sunday saw similar conditions as Saturday afternoon with great racing to be had by all in moderate winds. TFBYC should be commended for their efforts in running such a great event from a small club. 5 Lake Illawarra Youth Regatta On the weekend of February, 5 of our YRS members travelled to Lake Illawarra and competed in the Lake Illawarra Youth Regatta. Our team consisted of Chris Eddes, Josh Owen, Spencer Scutt, Sam Iversen and Andrea Garvey. The weather conditions were perfect for a challenging and enjoyable weekend of sailing made interesting by the ever present and abundant supply of jelly fish. The final results were an overwhelming display of how well our YRS team is going with the YRS group taking out the first 4 places in their division. 1 st Chris Eddes, 2 nd Andie Garvey, 3 rd Josh Owen 4 th Spencer Scutt Sam Iversen unfortunately withdrew from racing after being hit by a big gust and damaged his boat. The kids can be very proud not only of their fabulous sailing results but also the way in which they conducted themselves. The kids were a cohesive unit, helping each other rig, launch and pack up their boats. They were supportive of each others achievements and grateful for the opportunity to sail in a competitive event drawing youth from the local area and Sydney. Thanks to Craig and Mel who dropped by to check out on the kids progress. The kids really appreciated your visit and words of encouragement. A fabulous weekend enjoyed by all. Carolin Dasey CYC YOUTH SAILING During the last few months we have had a very successful time with our Youth Racing Squad (YRS) program. 9 members of the YRS competed in the Spiral nationals with Chris Eddes placing 9th overall and winning the junior division and Andrea Garvey placing 3rd in the ladies division. Hugh Gallagher took out the handicap trophy. Everyone of our team sailed exceptionally well in what was most peoples first national championships. The great results of the team are an indication of how they are improving every time they hit the water. The team trained very hard every 2nd day for 3 weeks leading up the title. 5 YRS members competed in the Illawarra Youth champs and Chris E, Andrea G and Josh O took 1st 2nd and 3rd respectively in the open single handed division against a strong Laser and Laser Radial fleet from Sydney. YRS training is on in full swing with 15 Spirals and a Flying 11 training on Friday nights. YRS has many events in the near future so watch this space for some great results to come. We have also started a Optimist team with 8 kids training on Fridays. With an average age of 11 these guys are on the way to becoming rockstars. Have a look at some of the skills these guys are developing when you are on the water. It is great to watch our young club members doing training drills and practice races to improve their sailing skills. Youth Sailing Academy is very popular again with about 50 kids learning sailing skills on Saturdays divided into 3 classes during the day. Craig Davidson Jan-Mar 5

B14 Nationals, Team Webster, Andre and Jake and Team Davidson, Craig and Mel headed to McCrae on the Mornington Peninsula for the B14 Nationals. With little exposure to other B14s both boats were unsure of what to expect. The race program was for 1 invitational race and then 2 back to back races each day for 5 days with a lay day in the middle. The invitational race was an absolute mess with less than half the fleet starting due to a southerly change hitting just before the start. Team Webster got around the track Team Davo DNS Tasar Nationals Heading off to our first major regatta the 2007 Adelaide Tasar Nationals team Fearless could hardly wait to get there and get started. The measure in was our first test and after a couple of rushed holes drilled in the mast to add a missing part we were ready to race. The fleet consisted of 55 boats which for us was an education come starting time. Transits were necessary as was picking a spot early and protecting it, things we don t have to do in Canberra. The usual method just didn t cut it and being a slow learner Fearless got 7 shithouse starts from 9, our best start was of course on a general recall! Oh well, chalk it up to experience, I won t make that long list of mistakes again At the high end of town the Championship went down to the wire after a full series of nine races and was won by local favourites Craig McPhee and Gillian Berry in More Small Things, chased all the way by previous world champion boat Chukkel, followed by Rigididge and Rumline. This win was achieved in the full range of sailing conditions from strong breeze of 20-25kts and big steep waves for 6 races to flat calm in light airs around 5kts, as seen in the photo. Heat 1 and 2 were held in a light SW Team Davo 4th & 5th, Team Webster 14th and 3rd. Heat 3 and 4 was run in a light E with a track up and down the beach with all boats tacking away from the shore when you almost hit the swimmers and back in again about 150 m of the shore. Many boats were running aground on the sand bar which ran up the center of the course. Team Davo 12th & 10th, Team Webster 18th & 12th. Both Teams headed to Queenscliff via the ferry for the layday to explore and have a nice relaxing day. Heats 5 and 6 were held in strong SW sea breeze.when the top guys (including # 2 in the B worlds) are capsizing you know its going to be a tough day. Some top rides were had downwind. Team Davo 12th & 6th Team Webster 11th and 13th. Heats 7 to10 were all held on the last day due to strong breezes the previous day. Team Davo 12th,14th,10th, 10th. Team Webster 14th, 15th, 15th, 14th. The Overall results were Team Davo 10th and Team Webster 13th. Both boats are very happy with the result as we both knocked of some very seasoned B14 teams. We are all looking forward to next years titles in Hobart which will be the pre regatta for the 2009 B14 worlds Craig Davidson For us one design racing is were it is at, if you want to improve your skill as a sailor and travelling to the Nationals was a huge learning experience not to mention an enormous amount of fun, bring on the NSW States at Easter Andy Cumming Did you know? 7 Australian Elliott 7 National Titles 2008 The Australian Elliott 7 National Titles were, for the third time in succession, held on Corio Bay as part of Skandia Geelong Week Ten boats contested the 2008 E7 Title with 6 of those from Canberra. Royal Geelong Yacht Club hosted the event and put on a great show that attracted around 450 boats. Two races were sailed on Friday in light variable conditions. Saturday was a marathon event testing the patience of the start committee and crews alike. With three races to be sailed for the day there where delays at each start waiting for the land or sea breeze to dominate. Crews left the dock around 11am and with start delays, returned to RGYC at around 7:45pm. Sunday saw the best sailing condition of the series with knot southerly breeze for race 6 that built during the racing. Some white knuckle rides were had by all for the final race and had us all smiling. Canberra Boat WalterTurnbull skippered by Matthew Owen won 6 of the 7 races over the three days, being beaten by Stewart Minchin on Need for Speed in Race 3. Stuart realized that the starter had displayed the wrong course initially and corrected the error within the 5 minute starting time. Stuart as he was entitled to do sailed the windward/leeward course and beat all other boats in the fleet that all sailed to the wing mark. Walter Turnbull was challenged in the 7 races by Mitchell Sails from Toronto. Justin Mitchell was consistently 2nd apart from race 3 being affected by Need for Speed s upset win. Third in the series was 12ft. Skiff legend Jim Walsh in Woof followed by Taking back Sunday steered by Cherub sailor Andrew Stewart who is marking his mark on the E7 fleet. 8 SAILING SOUTH Hobart 3-5 January 2008 Sitting in the CYC carpark, in a boat you won t be sailing, with the spinnaker up and filled may seem, at first blush, an unusual preparation for our first use of one of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania s Elliott 5.9s in this year s Sailing South regatta. Having barely seen, and never sailed in an Elliott 5.9, however, we were very grateful for every piece of preparation we could get, and Matt s knowledge of these boats, and practical run-through he gave us onboard an Elliott 7 in the carpark turned out to be invaluable. Our last foray for Sailing South, a few years back had involved taking our own boat, Billie, down to Hobart and the whole experience had been exciting, great fun and great value. This time our stay in Tasmania wouldn t have been long enough to justify the cost of embarking Billie as well as the car in the Bass Strait ferry. We found, on the RYCT s Sailing South website, that we could, for a very reasonable cost, charter one of the Club s fleet of Elliott 5.9s for the regatta - and then we had a plan. The crew consisted of me, Di Stafford, Guy Hodgman and Elizabeth Hodgman. Lou Hodgman provided brilliant shore support whenever and wherever needed. We had pretty much a free choice from the RYCT s fleet of six Elliotts. During the week or so before Sailing South some hours were spent combing over each boat and its rig to choose the one we thought would suit us best. The overall impression of the boats was that they re an excellent club training and racing platform. They re quite beamy. Aft of the mast seemed nearly as large an area as in the Elliott 7 and the arrangements for sheets and other lines is pretty similar as well. There s a spacious cockpit that widens out behind the traveller. The layout is naturally organised with space for the helmsman aft, separated by the traveller from the mainsheet hand. The work of the forward hand is done from the forward end of the cockpit, with activity like deploying the spinnaker done from inside the cabin hatchway. Fortunately, there s not normally any need to go onto the foredeck which is tiny. It seems like quite a large boat as far forward as the mast and then the forward end seems truncated. Overall, the boat and its rig were pretty straight forward and user friendly, particularly after the familiarisation Matt had given us. We arranged for a practice sail on the afternoon before the regatta, and just as well, too. As we were exiting the quite narrow channel out of the marina, and before we could get a sail up, the outboard motor just stopped and wouldn t start. There was a fairly fresh onshore breeze and, despite dropping the anchor, we found the keel was on the mud. A quick phone call and the embarrassment of being towed back into the marina were followed by grabbing another outboard, and back out onto the water. The boat proved to be a forgiving, agile and friendly and we quite quickly felt ourselves at home and comfortable - if not yet expert - working the boat in about 12 knots. It was a useful shakedown and we enjoyed getting used to it. 8 Jan-Mar Sailing South began the next day with an afternoon race for our division, of about 14 miles, over two windward return laps down the Derwent from Castray Esplanade (the Sydney Hobart finish line), and all our races for the rest of the regatta started and finished there also. There was a steady 12 knot NNE and we got a pretty good start, completing our first lap in about 80 minutes. We were getting things together pretty well and were able to take some benefit from a slight freshening of the breeze, taking about an hour for the second lap which would have been terrific if the course hadn t been shortened to the 1st lap. The RYCT makes much more use of VHF to communicate than we re used to, and doesn t use a shorten course sock on the race mark. While we could probably have looked more closely at the signal flag on the starter s tower at the end of the first lap, we didn t mind too much as we had such a great sail down the river and back for our 2nd lap. There were six entrants in our division, of whom five started. They were a brilliantly equipped and, as it turned out over the regatta, brilliantly sailed Castle 650 Epoxy Warrior, a keel boat of about feet, a Clubman 8 and a reasonably old sports boat which was very well handled throughout the regatta by a sailability crew (although they were out of the first race for being across the line before the start and not coming back). We came third in the 1st race, and were very happy with that result which put us within a ten minute span of elapsed times from first to last. Day two saw us equipped with a hand held VHF and ready for the day s two races, each around a triangular course of the order of miles. Again there was a fresh NNE, which freshened further for the second race. In the first race of the day we d finished fourth, about 7 minutes elapsed behind the winner. Having been advised at the RYCT that it was probably worth thinking about a reef if the wind was much over 15 knots, and also noting Matt s advice that the Elliott performed better if sailed fairly flat, we d set up the reefing lines for use if needed. We d noticed we were making quite a lot of leeway in the fresher breeze, and that the boat laboured a bit, too. We also noticed that some of the other boats in our division had reefed at various points, so we decided to give a reef a try during the 2nd race somewhat to our cost. Initially we d added a lashing from the leech reefing point onto the boom to close down what had looked like an untidy gap left by just using the reefing line, which simply led back to the aft end of the boom. Later in the race, when the wind eased a little and we went to shake out the reef, we noticed a real surge as soon as we freed the additional lashing, so much so that we then left the resulting reef in place and the boat took it very well indeed. The damage had been done and we finished last, about 11 minutes elapsed behind the winner. Day three was a passage race for our division, about 20 miles or so down to near the mouth of the Derwent, with

Di and Elizabeth, heading for the finish in the 2nd race on day 2 Guy and Elizabeth - working the spinnaker Getting the best out of the spinnaker, distance race, day three photo: courtesy Jane Austin an 11am first warning. The forecast was for strong NNE to about 30 knots. From the start we had a fairly pleasant 8-10 knots and a spinnaker run that took us almost all the way to the bottom mark - where the wind died. Those just 10 minutes ahead of us in our own and other divisions somehow kept a breeze to take them home in good order, but we spent a couple of hours thinking longingly of the steady and constant breeze we re that all so used to here on our lake. Every telltale on board hung or pointed in a different direction of its own choosing and as the spinnaker went up and down in response to this catspaw or that, it found winds that the telltales couldn t. The only consolation for us was that the tide had carried one of the other boats in our division past the mark and it d taken them nearly half an hour to get back and around it. That said, two frustrating hours couldn t take much of the shine off four days of terrific sailing over long legs in wonderful steady breezes. Then, off Kingston Beach, about a third of the way home, the forecast wind arrived and it was great. We d had enough of reefing the day before and we felt we could keep the boat sufficiently flat if we got right out on the gunwale and played the main well enough. Guy did a really great job on the main, and it felt like the boat just flew up the river close onto the wind. It was very hard work but very exhilarating. The wind eased a little for the last mile or two and we finished a bit after 5pm. That put us too far behind the boats in our division that d been able to keep the breeze home, and so we scored a DNF. Throughout the regatta, we d worked on how we organised ourselves for the helm, trimming the main, tacking, spinnaker sets and jibes and so on. Guy and I had alternated a bit between the helm and the main, with him taking on the main when it really needed skilled attention. Guy and Di s work on the spinnaker had been really good in all the races, including coping brilliantly with a couple of near disasters. Elizabeth put some great work on the helm in all the races, particularly when we were using the spinnaker. In terms of placing, we sustained our tradition of being at the back of the fleet. That said, in all but the last race we d put in very competitive times over long races, and received a number of compliments for the performance we d put in, particularly in a boat we d not sailed before. The Castle 650 won the series by two points from the keelboat, which was one point ahead of the Clubman. At the end of each day, the racing was followed by a sausage sizzle and the odd glass of something cold at the RYCT. There was also a very enjoyable presentation dinner on the last night, attended by the Governor of Tasmanian, Mr William Cox, who presented the trophies. The competition in the other divisions, the IRC and PHS Divisions and, most of all in the Farr 40 Division, as well as in our Division had been pretty intense. Overall, we were very happy with our performance and very happy with a few days of sailing in such fabulous conditions. There were also some interesting sidelights, including the sight of Roger Hickman s sister water skiing behind his yacht, Limit, and discovering of the world s most spectacular Magic 25 in the RYCT marina it was silver, with teak decks and a canting keel. We d enjoyed the racing, and we d been very impressed by the organisation and the extremely helpful approach of people at the RYCT. Leigh Behrens, the RYCT Sailing Manager had been incredibly helpful and friendly throughout, he typified the very friendly approach we encountered there. The final bonus was when the time came to pay for the charter. The Sailing South website had advertised that the cost to charter the Elliott 5.9 for the regatta would be $400 for RYCT members and $500 for non-members. Compared with the cost of bringing Billie to Hobart, this seemed pretty attractive and it was, in any case very good value for what had become a 4 day charter. When I went to pay, there was a pause, and then I was advised that the charge would actually be less than a third of what I d expected. The whole regatta had been tremendous fun, great value and we will be repeating this exercise as soon and as often as we can. I hope other CYC members might give some thought to taking a crew to Hobart for future Sailing South regattas. Apart from taking a crew, it would appear that there s a very ready market for individual crew members, particularly for boats in Paddy and Guy the bigger and faster concentrating, on the wind divisions. Give it a go, you ll enjoy it. Paddy Hodgman Jan-Mar 9

From the Manager As you are all aware the CYC is adding another part to its ever expanding operations with the new CYC Boat Shop opening on the 11 of March. A chandlery has been in the long term plans of the CYC for a number of years and has come to fruition after an extensive look at the viability of running this type of business at the club. The CYC committee were concerned for members and the ACT sailing community of not having a chandlery in Canberra to support its growing popularity, so it was a logical progression to open a store at the CYC with Bartondale closing down. The CYC has purchased most of Bartondale s stock and shop fitting and we are confident that the venture will be success and be able to fund future projects to benefit the members of the club. A huge thanks must go to club member Michael Walker s (sails on Peter Barter s E7) Signature Building who has done a fantastic job building a very high standard the shop in the back of the Sailing School shed. We must also thank other members who strapped on the tools belts to help Michael construct the walls in one night, Paul Neil and Steve Cartwright with a big thanks to Craig Davidson and Mike Vorbeck who has put a huge amount of work in the construction in between running his highly successful sailing school. With all the great news of our Youth Racing Team results in another regatta, I had an interesting visit to Sydney to see the results of another well run youth program. I was lucky enough to sail last weekend at the Audi regatta on the Sydney 38 Ichi Ban as strategy/mainsheet with most of the crew made up from the Sydney s CYCA s Youth Team. Having sailed quite a bit at the club 10 years ago with the only junior on most of the boats were the reluctant owners son who would have much preferred to be at home, I was amazed at the amount of young faces on most boats. Being one of the two dinosaurs onboard ( Quote ) these young guns ran the boat from tactics to quick tuning of the mast between races, these guys who are current Australian Youth Match racing champions, showed that a club based youth program is essential to the long term development of a club. It is most gratifying to see that the CYC has taken these programs starting from the 8 year old Optimists team members to build these types of sailors in the ACT. CYC Boat Shop The CYC Boat Shop is now open. For all your boat repair bits and pieces, or simply because you can t help yourself, come and check out the new shop. NOW OPEN Weekdays: 9.30am to 4.30pm Weekends: 9.30am to 12.30pm PH: By the way the last comment as we got off the boat was We would have won if we didn t have to carry you old fossils around the course!!! Times are changing. Happy sailing Cheers Matt 10 Jan-Mar
