WELCOME! Welcome to the 38th Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival. The Center for Wooden Boats' annual July 4th event is more than a parking lot of beautiful wood boats.

3 WELCOME! Welcome to the 38th Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival. The Center for Wooden Boats' annual July 4th event is more than a parking lot of beautiful wood boats. It is a celebration of CWB s mission and vision. We are a hands-on maritime heritage museum dedicated to preserving and passing on our small craft heritage the boats, the skills, the memories. At the Festival, kids can make their own toy boats. Kids and adults can play with pond model boats. Everyone can take rides in CWB s historically significant boats or step aboard one of the more than 100 boats on display. Visitors can watch a demonstration of traditional maritime skills, swap sea stories with one of the many skippers who will be welcoming visitors to their wood boats or sing along to traditional sea chanties. Everyone, no matter their age or abilities, will experience new skills on the water or in the shop. Our boats and tools are the textbooks of maritime history at CWB during the Festival and throughout the year. So enjoy the Festival and come back again sometime! 8 YOUTH ACTIVITIES $2 SUGGESTED DONATION TOY BOAT BUILDING Pick up the tools to build your own tiny wooden ship. Shape a sail and decorate your hull. It s never too late to add to your fleet! Fun for kids of all ages. AGES 3-9 POND $5 SUGGESTED DONATION MODEL BOAT SAILING Head to the Model Boat Pond for some sailing fun. Lake Union Park is home to a 100 diameter model boat pond. Model boats, designed after the R-boat Pirate in CWB s collection, will be available to sail and enjoy. A great way to learn the principles of sailing! When you re finished sailing, see the real Pirate on CWB s docks! $2 SUGGESTED DONATION 1PM - 2PM PIRATE STORYTIME Shiver me timbers! All pirates and pirate wannabes should head for the 114-year-old tugboat Arthur Foss on the Historic Ships Wharf for pirate tales and legends. After story time, tour the boat and meet the crew! They aren t real pirates, but they, too, are full of tall tales. AGES 1-8 AGES 8-14 POND JULY 5 12PM - 2PM EL TORO TRAIN RIDES Designed in 1936, the inexpensive and easy to build El Toro pram doubles as a yacht tender and a youth training craft. Take an El Toro Train boat ride around South Lake Union. While under tow, youth can steer and get first-hand experience at the helm. Space is limited. Sign-ups start at 10am on Dock C. MODEL BOAT RACING DEMO WITH T37 FLEET Made by local model boat designer Tippecanoe Boats,T37s are one of only a few remote control sailboats built out of wood. 12 ON THE WATER FREE BOAT RIDES Tour Lake Union by sail, row, paddle, steam, electric or power boat. Boats vary but they all fill up fast! Free Ride sign-ups begin at 10am at Dock C, located at the north end of the Festival. PRICE VARIES BOAT RENTALS Rent a boat and explore Lake Union on your own! We offer row boats, pedal boats and canoes. Rental prices vary by boat. Visit the Livery Booth on Dock C for more information. HISTORIC SHIPS OPEN EXPLORE ARTHUR FOSS & HISTORIC SHIPS Explore the historic tugboat Arthur Foss & Lightship No. 83 "Swiftsure" through daily tours and ongoing festival events. Tugboat Storytime aboard Arthur Foss at 1pm daily for kids ages 1-8. TEA ABOARD THE M/V LOTUS Enjoy a cup of tea aboard the M/V Lotus. Lotus has been a familiar sight in Puget Sound and north to Glacier Bay in Southeast Alaska for nearly 100 years. She was the largest power yacht on the West Coast when she was launched in VISIT VIRGINIA V ONE-HOUR CRUISES ON SATURDAY & SUNDAY 1PM & 3PM Open daily for free tours. On Saturday and Sunday, 1pm & 3pm, join local historian Jules James for a one-hour narrated cruise on Lake Union and Portage Bay. Tickets may be purchased on-line at or aboard the ship. 13 BOATBUILDING SKILLS DEMONSTRATIONS & ACTIVITIES CAULKING Come to the cork board to learn how to seal carvel seams. 11AM - 12PM Caulking, or corking, ADULTS is one of the oldest techniques still used to keep our boats dry. We ll show you how to use cotton and oakum and an assortment of traditional tools. ASK A BOATWRIGHT Ask CWB s Lead Boatwright questions 1PM - 2PM about wooden boat ADULTS maintentance, repair, construction and ownership! This is your chance for some technical advice from a professional. STEAM BENDING Learn the skills and the tools necessary to steam bend perfect planks every time. KNOT-TYING Experienced mariners will show you the ropes (pun intended!) of intermediate to advanced knots for all uses. 3PM - 4PM ADULTS BEER GARDEN JULY 5, 6 12PM - 4PM 21+ QUICK & DARING Observe teams as they frantically build boats in just 24 hours. They will discover the seaworthiness of their vessels at 4pm Sunday. Wach them launch from the Historic Ships Wharf WALK-UP BOATBUILDING Join in on the construction of a 10AM - PM six-hour canoe, whenever you please! Construction includes cutting plywood, joining sides and bottom together. Tools used include drills, saws, hammers, and sandpaper. Youth welcome with adults. Upon completion, the boat will be raffled and you could be the winner. Raffle takes place at 5pm on Sunday July 6. Presence not required to win. SKIN-ON- FRAME KAYAK BUILDING Watch as students build their own Aleut Baidarka, made primarily of yellow and red cedar with all joinery pegged and lashed no metal fastenings or glues. 14 SPECIAL EVENTS GALLERY JULY 5 2PM - 2:30PM ADULTS PRESERVING CULTURAL OBJECTS WITH DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS CWB Fleet Manager Kyle Hunter explains how to create 3D models of objects (such as boats) using inexpensive technology. With this method, an infinite amount of data can be gathered for the purpose of creating a lines plan or monitoring the change of shape over time. MOHAI 10AM - 5PM CHESHIAHUD CHALLENGE MOHAI and Seafair Summer Fourth present an around-the-lake scavenger hunt that s perfect for all ages. Walk or bike around Lake Union s Cheshiahud Loop Trail, gathering clues about local history to win prizes. Pick up a map at MOHAI! MOHAI 10AM - 3PM MOHAI LOCAL AUTHORS DAY Meet local authors and discover new summer reading! Talks will take place throughout the day and the MOHAI store will feature a 20% discount on all books. Authors include Jack Hamann, Michael Schein, Lorraine McConghay, Carol Cassella, and Nancy Bartley. GALLERY JULY 4 3PM - 4PM HIGHLINERS: BOATS OF THE CENTURY Exhibit curator Abby Inpanbutr presents the story of Seattle s longline fleet. Although fewer than 20 remain from a fleet that numbered over 150 in its heyday, the vessels and fishermen are still a vital part of Seattle s maritime economy. IT'S A HARD KNOCKABOUT LIFE... FOR A BOAT! For thousands of people every year, Blanchard Junior Knockabouts provide a platform for learning, confidence building, and access to the water. Visit the Boatshop to learn about the campaign to restore the final BJK of our fleet and support hands-on learning!
