1 Oct Nov WAUKEELOG Waukegan Sail & Power Squadron, a Unit of the United States Power Squadrons District 20 Promoting Safe Sail and Power Boating Published Six Times per Year COMMANDERS COMMENTS CDR ROBERT SLOAT, N This month two of our members, Daniel H. Martin, S and Past Commander John H. Van Benthuysen Sr., S received a special distinction from USPS for 25 years of membership. In recognition of this distinction, a gold-wreathed 25-year pin has been given to Daniel and John. Twenty five years of membership in USPS is deserving of our sincerest appreciation to Daniel and John and thanks from all WSPS members. Daniel lives in Waukegan and John recently moved to Florida. We plan to have a special recognition ceremony at our annual meeting on 8 Nov at the Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club honoring them. Our annual meeting and election is scheduled for Saturday, 8 November at Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club. We want to especially invite all new members who have joined WSPS since our last annual meeting in November 2013, to attend. Captain Pete Thompson of Lakeland Marine Towing and Salvage, Inc and Tow BoatUS out of Kenosha Harbor was presented with an Honorary WSPS Membership. Pete gave a very interesting presentation on life as a tow boat captain on Lake Michigan at our April social meeting. He gave us many tips on preventing emergency towing and insights on marine insurance coverage. It is noteworthy that none of the many serious towing and salvage incidents Pete reviewed included any WSPS member boats. At our cruise to Racine in September, a super special Welcome Back to Boating was given to member Gary Le Vine who has spent most of this year getting in shape for and quickly recovering from major surgery. 3 Fall Boating EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lt/C ELISABETH GELTZ, JN If anyone was boating this past weekend, it is clear some of the most beautiful boating weather in Chicago, is in the fall. That being said, boating safety is as important now as in the spring. There are fewer boaters on the lake and in harbors to offer assistance, so we all need to be on our game. Below is a link to an article that highlights a few key points to fall boating including checking the weather forecast before heading out, looking for changes throughout the day as well as potential fog. Wearing an approved life jacket as air temperatures may be comfortable, but water temperatures start dropping and hypothermia becomes an issue. File a float plan with someone who will follow-up with you. Have tools on hand for minor repairs. Make sure your boat and engines are in good repair and that you have sufficient fuel, and fuel additive as needed to prevent the fuel line from freezing. Be aware of changes in water levels. The places you visited mid-summer may have a very different water level later in the season. YORKTON0501/ /-1/yorkton05/simple-precautionsmake-for-safe-boatingFile The Coast Guard just issued an updated version of the Navigation Rules Book which is required on board for all boats 36 feet and longer and makes for great reading! CG_NAV_RULES_ pdf Both of these links can be found on our WSPS face book page. Please go to: to "like" us! Wishing you Happy and Safe Fall Boating, Elisabeth Wishing our Members a Happy Birthday! 4 As autumn is upon us, the end of the boating season is fast approaching. I hope you have had a good boating season. Our Squadron has had three Cruise and Rendezvous events this past season, all well attended. Our annual Memorial Day with the Navy, at Great Lakes Naval Base, was an inspiring event. Although the weather limited the number of members who cruised to Great Lakes Harbor, approximately a dozen members arrived by car to enjoy the activities. In August we cruised to Kenosha Harbor Marina for an enjoyable weekend. Nine boats rendezvoused at the harbor and a number of members arrived by car for a dock party and dinner at the Wine Knot restaurant. The weekend of September we cruised and raced from Waukegan and Winthrop Harbor to Racine. Two groups raced sailboats and several powerboats joined the rendezvous. We had a great evening for a dock party with temperatures in the 70 s. More than twenty of us enjoyed dinner and comradery at the Brewhouse restaurant at Reefpoint. We had a strong northwesterly wind to push us home Sunday, and the seas were relatively calm. Our Annual Meeting and Election of Officers is a little more than one month away. An Old Timers / Newcomers dinner will be combined with the annual meeting to be held on November 8 at the Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club. Pizza dinner is free and all are welcome. We hope all members who joined Waukegan Sail and Power Squadron during the last year will attend. We will also arrange for rides to the yacht club for those unable to drive. See the meeting announcement on page 6 for more information, or call Dave Sallmann ( ) for further information. I hope to see all of you at the Annual Meeting. 5 Continued from Page 1 - Commander s Comments wife, Kathy, deserves lots of praise too for the time and work devoted to getting Gary back on the high seas while still keeping their boat afloat in Waukegan Harbor. We are asking members and reaching out to existing WSPS members to consider volunteering to help WSPS in its various activities, like social events, meetings, cruises, teaching, hospitality, membership, communications, photography, newsletter and PR. We also have a website (wspsboating.org) and Facebook page ( which are maintained by a few individuals and often need additional material and possible personal help. If you would like to get more involved in one of the above areas, please drop me a note at commander@wspsboating.org and I will put you in contact with the appropriate person in WSPS to help get you more involved. Our annual meeting and election is scheduled for Saturday, 8 November at Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club. For all new members who have joined WSPS since our last annual meeting in November 2013, we are giving free USPS 100th Anniversary hats to those who attend this event. We will also be recognizing new members at the meeting. Keep an eye out on our website and look for Constant Contact s to members for more details on this important WSPS event. We have five new members who joined USPS this month as part of our program to offer certain USPS classes free to new annual members. All are taking our Sail Class and some are taking the Weather Course. The latter is taught by P/D/C Charles Burger, SN from Fox Valley Sail and Power Squadron. Thanks to Chuck and Fox Valley Squadron for helping WSPS on this course. Bob WAUKEELOG EDITOR Maureen Lilleeng, AP topsailcom@comcast.net Fellow Boaters and Friends, This issue is about our members old and new. I m not talking about age, but about our tenure with WSPS. This issue celebrates the camaraderie of members around boating and education. There have been many great activities this summer, a few which have been captured in photos. Where possible, I ve added names to the photos. (Please, if you send photos for the Waukeelog, please send along names, dates, and locations so that I can add them. I don t know everyone yet!) As the season comes to a close, please consider attending the 2014 Annual Meeting (see page 6). If you are new to WSPS, you ll see what we re all about and meet some fellow boating enthusiasts. Have a wonderful fall season and give thanks, Maureen 5

13 Welcome Home Gary! It is with great joy and celebration that everyone in the Waukegan Sail & Power Squadron extends a huge Welcome Home high five to Gary Le Vine. Gary and his wife, Kathy are well know members of WSPS (Kathy has served as Educational Officer and esteemed Waukeelog Editor). Gary and Kathy are celebrating their journey of a lifetime, with Gary receiving a life-saving heart transplant earlier this year. The photo shows Gary and Kathy at the well attended Racine Rendezvous dinner party at the Brewhouse, after having travelled to Racine with Jeff and Elizabeth Geltz on their trawler Jonah. Jeff explained, Gary and Kathy seemed to enjoy the trip. Honestly with small craft warnings in effect both up and back, I doubt we would have taken the boat up had we not committed to them we would give them a ride. They were so excited there is no way I could have cancelled. After what Gary and Kathy have gone through, you can see why small craft warnings didn t faze them! Glad to see you back home! IT is a boater s safety flag. Starting in 2015, Illinois boaters towing a person must display a foot-long orange flag while the rider is in the water. 13
