2 Education: After a precision apprenticeship at the Philipps University in Marburg in 1980, Bernd Gombert studied mechanical and precision engineering at the Technical University of Giessen. 3 Since 1986 he was scientific staff member and since 1990 head of the mechanics lab at the Institute for Robotics and System Dynamics of the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich. Until 2001 he was responsible for development, design and production of mechanics and mechatronics for robot sensors and actuators, light-weight arms, grippers, articulated hands and man-machine interfaces. 6 Bernd Gombert founded the company SPACECONTROL GmbH, based in Gilching, Germany. This company s main objective was to make 3D input technology (SpaceMouse) the worldwide standard in the field of 3D computer design. In 1998 Logitech, the world s largest manufacturer of computer input devices, purchases an equity stake of 49% in this company. SPACECONTROL was renamed to LogiCad3D and in the meantime sister companies had been founded in the U.S.A. and Japan. Bernd Gombert was member and Chairman of the Supervisory Board Logitech acquired 100% of LogiCad3D and renamed the company in 3Dconnexion, a Swiss holding company.
