5 page a report! The Sloop Tavern Yacht Club s 26 th annual Blakely Rock Benefit Regatta was held on April 1 st, The beneficiary was the Ballard High School Steve Molnes Fund. This fund helps special needs students with many of the basic necessities that are cut out of today s public school budgets. The final tally raised for the Steve Molnes fund was $7,800. The Ballard community and the sailing community really came through and supported this cause. On the race course, there was a nice Southerly all day and for the Northwest the weather was great: sunny, windy and warm no joke!. The racing was tight and from the committee boat it seemed like the majority of the fleet all finished at once. It made for some exciting times keeping everything straight. The big winners for the day were: In Non Flying Sails, Division 1, leading the course for at least an hour, was Scotch and Soda, Nick of Time and Bobby Foster, skippered by one of the Sloop s own past commodores. Division 2 was Penetration, Grayling and Going Gray (hmmmm ). Division 3 saw Snake Oil running away with the overall non flying sails division, followed by Prismatic Thunder and Jeorgia. In Flying Sails, The clever Magician lead Division 4, taking home the Roland Littlefield Church Performance Trophy in the flying sails division for winning their class by the largest margin, followed by the least crewed boat in Puget Sound, Shogun, and Runner, keeping up. Division 5 saw the introduction of the newest act in town, 3 Ring Circus, with the little guy Squirt and Moonshine right behind. There were five Moore 24 s sailing in a one design start. Moore Uff Da won this one handily, followed by Claire de Lune, and Electric Mayhem. Ben Braden is working hard to establish a Moore 24 fleet in the Northwest. If you are looking for a fun reasonably priced one design look at the Moore 24 s. These boats are fun to sail and they have great racing up and down the West Coast. Norn and Airloom duked it out in Division 7 and Ladybug stayed out of the way. It was the Sofa Kings on Mystique, hooty hooting all the way around the course in division 8, closely followed by Rubicon and Freehand. In Division 9, Kokopele had a great comeback and won first overall in the flying sails division and the West Marine 1 st Overall trophy, followed by Xcentric and Wood n Wind. In Division 10, Last Tango led Shoot the Moon and Corvo by less than 1 minute. The mighty Tallywacker, fresh off the hard, dominated in Division 11, beating Kilo and Blue Fin. Finally, in the why don t they go in a straight line class, Division 12, multi-hulls, it was Danger Zone (nice name), Sibling Rivalry and Cuttle Fish Thanks to the Carol Kay for serving as committee boat; the race committee, many of whom were teachers from Ballard High School (they also served breakfast and bussed tables); the incredibly generous raffle sponsors, the hard working STYC volunteers, and everyone who participated in this race to raise money for the Steve Molnes Fund. The money raised will have a huge impact helping special needs students at Ballard High School. See you all next year. Kirk Utter, Commodore and Neil Bennett, Vice Commodore
