2 MYA Survey 2015 Aims: Better understanding of the MYA Members age demographic. Better understanding of what the MYA members do in the sport. Better understanding of the comparative strengths and weaknesses of the MYA Council workings.

5 Gender 97% male - Why? Gender Questions it raises. Are our clubs female friendly? Are our clubs family friendly? Are our competition venues family friendly? Do the facilities available for the female skipper affect their participation? Would happier families and wives allow skippers to travel more? Does the massive gender gap contribute to other survey answers?

9 MYA Membership Length Large numbers are new members to the MYA (Less than 5 years). Questions it raises. Attracting new members, but overall membership static, why? Is it new members who are the keenest to engage with the MYA? Is the length of membership linked to the members age range? Why are we losing members? Is it the sport that loses their interest or membership of the MYA? How do we build on the initial interest in the sport?

11 Classes Sailed IOMs dominate our sport, DF65 and Marblehead have recently increased numbers, other classes struggle for numbers Questions it raises. Is this split in class numbers healthy for the sport? Can the MYA influence this? Should the MYA concentrate on the popular classes? Should the MYA concentrate on the less popular classes? Should the Classes be independent from the MYA? Do the Members age range and gender affect the classes sailed?

13 Level Sailed Club level sailing dominates, with District and National level being closely balanced. Questions it raises. Is the split to be expected? Are the Club, District and National skippers different people or the same? Should the MYA involve itself at club level? Can the MYA help the club sailor; do they want help? Should the MYA concentrate its assistance to the international skippers?

15 MYA Features Overall the view is that the MYA is doing a good job in the areas surveyed. Large percentage have no view! Questions it raises.. Why do some members not have a view on features that are part of their membership entitlements? Why do some consider areas to be poor? How do the MYA improve the areas that are poor? Can the MYA do more given the available resources?

16 Conclusions: Many of the findings put numbers to previous assumptions, No real surprises! The current age range and gender have not happened overnight and previous efforts have not altered this dramatically. The sport needs to grab the lowest hanging fruit first for initial gains, subsequently agreed as dinghy sailors and members of other RC activities. The MYA needs to find a way to encourage the aged skippers to engage with the sport.

22 Acquaint Distribution & Frequency This issue can be split into three sections: Distribution if the Acquaint is to continue as hard copy, it is clear that the membership would prefer it to be distributed to individuals rather than through Club Secretaries. Frequency again, if the Acquaint is to continue as hard copy, there is no apparent requirement for either more or fewer copies Online there would appear to be some agreement to an Online version, to enable a saving to be made on distribution costs, thereby allowing the Association to use those funds to help promote the sport and clubs in the future.

24 Training & Accreditation Based on the input from the survey response, there would seem to be support for the introduction of race official training, in conjunction with the RYA This was also supported in the comments/desires section at the end of the survey

25 Comments & Desires There were some 1,000 plus comments/desires Similar comments/desires are being consolidated under appropriate headings Respective Councillors will then be asked to review these and submit proposals to address the issues raised by the membership
