1 Propeller and Sail Ketchikan Yacht Club Newsletter May 2002 Current Soundings THIS YEARS NORTHWEST KROGEN RENDEZVOUS WILL BE HELD AT COUVERDEN ISLAND IN ICY STRAIT. THE DATES ARE JULY 16, 17, 18, WE ARE EXPECTING ABOUT A DOZEN CRUISING KADEY-KROGEN BOATS TO ATTEND THIS YEARS EVENT. WE HOPE TO HAVE PARTICIPATION FROM THE KETCHIKAN CONTINGENT OF KROGEN OWNERS AND FELLOW YACHT CLUB MEMBERS.WE HOPE FRANCES STOUGHTON, COROLINA, FOGGY BAY AND MA CHERE CAN BREAK FREE OF THEIR MOORINGS AND JOIN US. THIS IS THE SIXTH ANNUAL EVENT TO BE HELD IN ALASKA WATERS AND IT S A GOOD TIME FOR SUMMER KROGEN TRAVELERS TO MEET AND TRADE STORIES OF THEIR TRAVELS. IFYOU SEE A KROGEN IN YOUR TRAVELS, PLEASE GIVE THEM A SHOUT; THEY ARE A FRIENDLY BUNCH AND COME OVER FOR A DRINK WITH ICE IN IT.. SAM AND MARVOL BARNARD Sunset over the Atlantic Ocean by Larry Meehan April Meeting Notes It was a terrific presentation by Greg Thomas of Southeast Sea Kayaking about kayaking and items to take along with you. Trustee Meeting Notes Commodore Maynard presented the Trustees with a brief for the BIG-P project. With some minor changes made for clarity, the Trustees voted unanimously in favor. The decision brief will be made available to all members before and at a special meeting to be held on May 14, 2002 at the Clubhouse to get a member-vote on the project. We are in the process of buying merchandise for sale at the club (and at a few locations in town). We will have new t- shirts, mugs, and burgee pins (in about 6 weeks or sooner, we hope). Also, we need folks to sign up for Club Steward (all months open July) and Sunday brunch (which will start in May). We will have a work party to do spring cleanup, so watch for the date and come out for sprucing up the clubhouse. Carole Galloway has already started the flower planting and they are looking pretty nice. At the Commodore's Ball a good time had by all. Great dinner as usual from Trish and her crew out at the Lodge and great DJ music for dancing by Chuck. The raffle for Youth Sailing netted almost $ Many thanks to John Clifton for that idea and for supplying the raffle items. Jack and Bev Davies won the Bed and Breakfast getaway weekend and Judith Anglin won "the box" of varied items.

2 Page 2 Commodores Column By Roger Maynard Commodore's Comments: Boating season is almost here and we can hardly wait. We've seen herring, lots of birds, and a few whales in Tongass Narrows. With rumors of the Pacific Ocean El Nino warming trend, we're hoping for another spectacular summer in southeast Alaska. THE BIGP GRANT: The trustees have unanimously endorsed the Boating Infrastructure Grant Program funding and are preparing a packet for members, to be finalized early next week (week of April 29 th.) Analysis of costs show clearly that if we use about half of our savings now, about $30,000, as matching funds to upgrade our facility with this grant, we will save over $50,000 in maintenance costs over the next 25 years. The new concrete float under the clubhouse will eliminate needed restoration the side deck and front porch (estimated $12,000,) eliminate maintenance on the log float which is costing between $5000 and $9,000 every 10 years, and extend the life of the current facility. It also will eliminate possible liability for inadequate septic system and will put us substantially in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In accordance with the KYC Articles of Incorporation, Article VI, we will have a special meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at the KYC Clubhouse to review the BIGP project and vote on whether to accept the BIGP funds and complete a new float as planned. If the membership decision is to accept the funds and build the new float as planned, the next step will be to approach the City of Ketchikan with the package. The grant agreement is actually a partnership between the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the City of Ketchikan, and Ketchikan Yacht Club. We already have the support of ADF&G, but need the approval of the harbor owner (City of Ketchikan) before we can complete the project. Any members who want a copy of the BIGP packet ahead of the meeting date can call me at and leave a message, or rogermaynard@att.net and I'll mail a packet right away. We'll also have the packet available on the KYC website a week before the meeting--i'll put out an notice when it's posted (it will be password protected so it's available to members only.) YOUTH SAILING The Youth Sailing Project is not dead. However, it's on a slower track and our target date is now next spring (2003). The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Parks and Recreation Department needed a decision last week whether to include the dinghy program on their summer calendar and I was unable to commit. We still have six dinghies that need maintenance, sailors to train, and other details to work out, so next spring is a more realistic date to plan for. We may have dinghies available at the KYC Clubhouse for member use and familiarization sometime this summer, but we will not be able to give lessons until we're properly insured certified by U.S. Sailing. Have a nice summer, and we'll see you on the water! Roger

3 Page 3 Schooner Race Report from SV RAVEN. Susan & Emil are cruising members (in 2001 & have applied for similar status this year.) and keep in touch Larry Meehan regularly. From: "Susan & Emil Dopyera - Aboard The Schooner Raven" <edsd@maxen.net> Date: Friday, March 29, :48 PM The America's Schooner Cup Regatta 2002 Sponsored by the Kona Kai International Yacht Club San Diego, California ' N., ' W. Raven spread her wings and soared amongst the finest of schooners to ever gather in the America's Schooner Cup Regatta. She raced amongst her piers, including the giants of "A Class" - Dauntless, Curlew and Kelpie; amongst those of her own size in "B Class" - Albatross Allure, Shine On, Merrymaid, Mischief, Tina Christine, Megan D, Scrimshaw, Lifee P. Baker, Bright Star, Elan and Maid Of Kent; and the "Little Darlings" of the schooners in "C Class" - Puff, Ruby Slipper, Damsel and Therapy. At the start line, Raven crossed in the best position of any, heading high on the wind, with clean air keeping her wings full and sliding over the water like an eagle. The winds were perfect for her and she knew it. As she flew around mark after mark, ahead of all her class, crossing over, around and dodging the giants of "A Class," she held her rail down, her bough high, and must have had a smile on her face. As she crossed the finish line she heard the cannon, and even dipped a bit as if taking a bow. She had truly raced like the thoroughbred she is. However, her Captain, Captain Bligh, realized he had taken a mark on the wrong side (starboard) during the course of the race. It was an insignificant mark, but enough that he had to call to the Committee Boat and report he was disqualifying Raven. Raven protested but it was beyond her control. The race was over and she knew she was out of the awards. However, at the Awards Presentation, Captain Bligh, received a standing ovation for his integrity and honesty, and received the "Resolution -- Good Sportsmanship -- Award," along with a bottle of champagne. Raven couldn't have been any prouder of her Captain and crew, as they were of her. She knew she had done her very best, had soared with the majestic schooners, and stood tall amongst per piers. May 7 KYC Meeting Next KYC meeting will be May 7. The Potluck will start at 6:30 pm, bring an interesting dish to share and the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.

4 Page 4 SPRING CRUISING DESTINATIONS or Do it before the down south cruisers get here. By John Clifton, M/V Baby Grand While the weather is to cold to work on bright work, and the new paint shed isn t complete, what better way to welcome the ice-free harbors of spring then to go for a cruise. The following are some of my favorites, and as far as I know, still not known publicly. Times are based on travelling at 8 knots with calm waters and a good drink bearer. The first two buoys were established by KYC s partnership with the USFS. We should be proud of our contribution to the cruising world. Osten Island Buoy Located about 2-2 ½ hours up Carroll Inlet. I was there last week, and the buoy is in fine shape. If entering at night, remember that the buoy isn t visible until you are within ¼ mile, if entering from the south, on the channel that starts opposite of Coon Cove. I didn t encounter crab or shrimp pots buoys, but have in the past Smugglers Cove Buoy Located about 3 hours across the west channel of Behm Canal. Nice fair weather anchorage, I don t think I d want to be there in a storm, but can t say for sure. Naha float Located three hours away, by turning right out of any Ketchikan Harbor, and keeping the shore on your right until you get there. If you want a more scenic trip, turn left, and keep the shore on your left until you get there. This route takes much more time. The trail is now snow free to the Orten Ranch. Patchy snow on the trail beyond the ranch. Shoal Cove float Located 4 hours away, up Carroll Inlet. Nice spot, frequent boat traffic can cause wakes at dock. Margarita Bay Float Located about an hour past Naha, at the entrance to Traitors Cove. Nice float with plenty of room. However, my experience is that the forest service employees take up 2 small spots and during the summer, some commercially operated float planes may tell you they have priority. It is my understanding that in the Ketchikan Ranger District that first come, first served is the norm. However, as in so much of our activities right may lead to hard feelings. The prudent mariner works to provide safe and fun outings for all concerned. Just don t forget, file a float plan, take a friend and have fun. Get there early, stay late, and be safe. I hope to see you on the water. PS: For those that know my favorite spot, I didn t mention Ice House Cove, because by now it s getting to crowded. For the next 6 months, if you go there, be prepared to anchor.
