7 Top 10 of Dún Laoghaire 1 Welcome Event Come to the LexIcon Gardens and participate at a 2 hour free live music event from 1pm-3pm. Enjoy traditional Irish music by the trad group Celtic Hearts and Riverdance style dance. 2 National Maritime Museum The museum s greatest artefact is the building itself as it is one of a few custom built places of worship for sailors remaining intact in the world today. There are interesting mechanical exhibitions, including first class artefacts, on many aspects of the Irish maritime, wildlife around the Irish coastline including fish and birds, a maritime art gallery, a recreated ship s radio room and a Titanic exhibition. The museum houses an extensive collection on all aspects of maritime heritage, from the massive anchor in the museum courtyard to tiny models put together by the lighthouse keepers. 3 The Shackleton Endurance Exhibition This exhibition is the story of the men s 22-month ordeal: the eerie beauty of Antarctica, the sinking of their doomed ship after it became locked in pack ice and was slowly crushed, the extreme hardships the men endured as they set up camp after camp on the drifting ice, their transfer to the relative safety of Elephant Island, and the expedition s miraculous conclusion. That all 28 men survived their terrible adventure was a triumph of hope in the bleakest circumstances, and of faith in their leader The Boss an Irish-born doctor s son whose achievements in polar exploration earned him a knighthood. At the heart of the exhibition, accompanied by explanatory wall texts and diary excerpts from the journey, are Hurley s dramatic black-and-white images of the expedition. 4 Sculpture Trail The Sculpture Trail contains an interactive map of the significant collection of public sculpture and monuments in the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown area. The Map details 39 pieces in total from historic pieces such as The Usher Monument to more contemporary pieces such as Richard Enda King s Vigil at Dún Laoghaire fire station and Rowan Gillespie s Blackrock Dolmen at the Blackrock bypass. 5 Walking Tour Dún Laoghaire You will be guided through Dún Laoghaire s memorials to Kings, Queens, Writers, Heroes and Villains and see Dún Laoghaire s iconic 19th century buildings. When the sun graces us with its presence we will read the time on a mathematically accurate sundial, we will see monuments to tragic heroes and victims of war and we will laugh at the girth of Georgie Pordgie! Walking Tours depart from the Tourist Information Centre on Marine Road, located in the foyer of the County Hall. All tours are less than 5miles/8Km over level terrain. The duration of each tour is 1.5 to 2 hours. 6 James Joyce Tower The James Joyce Tower was one of a series of Martello towers built to withstand an invasion by Napoleon and now holds a museum devoted to the life and works of James Joyce, who made the tower the setting for the first chapter of his masterpiece, Ulysses. The gun platform with its panoramic view, and the living room inside the tower are much as he described them in his book. The museum s collection includes letters, photographs, first and rare editions and personal possessions of Joyce, as well as items associated with the Dublin of Ulysses. 9 The Metals Heritage Tour The Metals is a historic route that once brought stone from Dalkey Quarry to the great harbour works in Dún Laoghaire. Over 600,000 tonnes of stone was dragged by horse along a railway to make what was then and still is one of the largest harbours in the world. The Metals is a walk down the industrial history of this part of Dublin and take you from the beauty of Dún Laoghaire harbour to the amazing views from Dalkey and Killiney Hill. This is a 6 km return walk from Dún Laoghaire. 7 Shopping in Dún Laoghaire Dún Laoghaire has an eclectic range of shops, from international brands such as Penney s, Fired Earth, Meadows and Byrne, to the smaller family run shops with unique personal service, such as Frewen and Alyward, Hicks, McManus s, Murphy s, Shaws and Tierney s. A convivial street atmosphere still exists and this runs from the sea front, up Marine Road and the length of Georges Street. If you arrive on a rainy day, go to Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre, which includes 83 Shops and Coffee Bars just 120 metres from the Ferry Terminal. Or you go to Bloomfield s Shopping Centre, which is in the heart of Dún Laoghaire just opposite St Michaels Hospital on George s Street Lower. For food there is a café and a large Tesco supermarket. 8 Dún Laoghaire Pier Dún Laoghaire Pier is the perfect place to take a stroll, breathe in the sea air, and enjoy stunning views of Dublin Bay. Whether you fancy a brisk walk or just want to sit and watch the world go by, Dún Laoghaire Pier is the spot to do it. The East Pier is a popular 2.6 kilometre return journey walking path that offers great views from the Dublin marina out across the bay. Watch as sail boats, powerboats and yachts navigate the harbour. Or head out to where local fishermen cast their lines to see what s biting. 10 The Forty Foot The most well-known and loved swimming spot in Dún Laoghaire is the famous Forty-Foot an open-sea bathing area by the Martello Tower and enjoyed by Dubliners for more than 250 years. This was used to be a men-only swimming spot, but today the Forty-Foot is open to anyone brave enough for a bracing plunge in its chilly waters. Though cold, the water is clean, and there are steps to guide swimmers safely in and out of the water. The area is nicely maintained and there are changing rooms nearby.
