The official notice board is in the clubhouse s enclosed porch Calendar Mon Wed May June July August Sept Monday-Night Series Club Championship SPSC Open Club Championship Series Regatta Series Wednesdays will be divided into 3 intervals of weeks respectively. The middle segment, comprised of every Wednesday in July, will be the SPSC Open Series Regatta. Racing Area Mark Latitude Longitude S N W N W N W N W N W N W N W N W N W The racing area shall be centred at Mark S, 1.4 miles at a heading 33 from outside the Pike Creek channel on Lake St. Clair. Marks are 0.75 nautical miles from the centre mark and arrayed in a regular octagon with mark 8 pinned to magnetic north (using magnetic variation of 7 34 W). ABACDEBF Monday-Night Series Notice of Race Rules This series will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. The Sailing Instructions and a Handicapping Synopsis will be made available by May 9 th. Dates & Times This series will run every week on Monday night from May 16 th through Sept. 12 th. The first warning signal will be at Class to Race The class rules are a model of simplicity. No symmetric spinnakers may be flown but anything else is ok to be more specific, foresails must be asymmetric (with a front and back) and tacked on the centreline. There are no restrictions on girth or size, so it is up the person-in-charge to determine whether the sail is appropriate for the conditions. That s it, there are no other rules, handicapping will be determined by your previous performance. No measurements are necessary and no certificates are required. There will be a single start for all boats unless fleet size makes it necessary to have two starts. The split will be determined by lengh overall and published at least a week before it comes into effect. Even if such a split is instituted, all boats will still be ranked as a single fleet using corrected elapsed times. Courses The standard course will be 3.6 nautical miles and is just an abreviated version of the Wednesday course, but there is also a longer Great-Circle course of 6.1 miles to be sailed on windy days. See the Sailing Instructions for the pretty pictures. A Development Class! Carrying on from last year will be the rollingaverage handicaps based on a boat s individual performance. It will be recalculated after each race based on performance in previous Monday-night racing and only apply to this series. This single-mindedness is of great benefit to the casual cruiser, as you can race your boat as-is without having to conform to an ideal for your boat. We also free competitors of the need to have their boat and sails measured to comply with class restrictions there are none! New sails introduced throughout the year have the potential to improve a boat s performance over its own rolling-average the RC has consciously decided to overlook this and no handicapping penalties will be applied for growing sail inventories. Yes, we are a development class! We will monitor this policy throughout the year to see whether it balances fairness with an incentive for selfimprovement. Handicapping Calculations The precise handicapping method used is still under development and will be published alongside the Sailing Instructions in May. Registration & Initial Handicaps Competitors are required to register a week in advance of receiving their initial handicap. Although boats can join the fleet at any time, you will not have results posted until a week after registration, in order to give the RC time to determine your initial handicap. Please fill in the accompanying registration form and make note of any special circumstances that would influence your handicap. RC Duty Any competitor may be called upon to perform RC duties, dates of which will be published well in advance. Comprehensive RC instructions will be available in the on-water kit and ashore from the SPSC web site. Selective High Point Scoring Mondays will switch to the Selective High Point System with a 50% series participation baseline. A boat s race score will be zero, plus one for finishing a race, plus the number of boats beaten. A boat s series score will be the average of all the race scores in which she competed. No special accommodation will be made for races missed owing to RC duties. Have Fun Don t forget that the Monday-night programme is about having fun. All SPSC sailor s should seriously consider competing in at least one race!

10 SPSC Open Series Regatta Notice of Race Regatta Chairman Wesley Arthur ABACDEBF Courses Rules The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. The Sailing Instructions will be made available by June 29 th. Dates & Times A race will run every Wednesday in July (the 6 th, 13 th, 20 th & 27 th ). The first warning signal will be at Classes to Race Races will be sailed according to Essex County PHRF Association class rules and ratings. There will be JOG and PHRF classes split into divisions as entries permit. Splits will be published before the first race. Registration & Facilities The entry fee is $20. Visiting boats may make use of the harbour and facilites. Contact Wesley at wgarthur@hotmail.com for details. Please fill in and deliver the attached registration form to the SPSC office as early as possible. Scoring 2 races are required to be completed to constitute a series. When fewer than 4 races have been completed, a boat s series score will be the total of her race scores. When 4 races have been completed, a boat s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score. Prizes Prizes Awarded Participants in Division 1 st 3 or more 1 st & 2 nd 5 or more 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd 7 or more SPSC Open Series Regatta flags will be awarded in each division. Dates & Times The series of 14 races will run every Wednesday from May 18 th until September 14 th with a 4 week gap in July. The first warning signal will be at Classes to Race Races will be sailed according to Essex County PHRF Association class rules; however no rating certificates are required and ratings will be assigned by the RC. JOG There will be a single JOG class. PHRF The PHRF class may be divided into PHRF A & B. The RC will post a notice of splits before the first race. Please fill in and deliver the attached registration form to the SPSC office as early as possible. All boats will be scored but only SPSC members are eligible for Club Championship prizes; also members may be called upon to perform RC duties, in which case they will be automatically granted redress (via rule A10(a)) on any missed club championship race. Comprehensive RC instructions will be available in the on-water kit and ashore from the SPSC web site. Scoring For Club Championship prizes, visiting boat s results will be omitted and then the 2 worst scores excluded.
