1 The Chowder Chatter Newsletter of the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society A Premiere Sailing Club of Southwest Florida Next Full Moon June 23 JUNE 2013 C o m m o d o r e ' s M e s s a g e Spectacular achievement is always preceded by spectacular preparation (Robert H. Schuller) Memorial Day festivities are upon us and I look forward to seeing everyone out on the water this weekend! And to that note, as we head into our Hurricane Season it is important to note how vital Preparation and Planning are to the welfare of us, and our boats. NOW is the time to look at your strategies to void the havoc of last minute chaos when a storm may be approaching! As our CMCS racing season is taking a bit of a hiatus except for the Ladies Day race June Commodore Bev Duff 8 th, our cruising fleets are out and about areas near, and far. RC of Cruising Ron & Shirley are leading a cruise to Tortugas the first week of June, Bob and Bev Duff are heading to Fisherman s Village mid June, and then we have a group of skippers who are exploring the Bahamas through June. Take journeys on our boats while we can. Safe travels to everyone. Also at the beginning of summer, we are bidding Aloha to several members who head back north (or overseas) to enjoy the cooler winds elsewhere. Wishes for everyone to have safe and enjoyable summer with their family and friends and know you will be missed. We will look forward to welcoming you home to SW FL next fall! s and notes about your adventures are always welcomed. On a more serious note, CMCS publishes a Calendar and Directory for our members ONLY each year. On the bottom of each page is the notation; Please respect and protect the privacy of our members, Commercial use of the information contained in this listing is prohibited without prior written consent of the CMCS Board of Directors. The Board of Directors takes the use of our rosters for anything other than the private use of our members as a serious subject. I, as Commodore, have been contacted by several members as a member of our group feels they have the right to solicit business using our directory. By bringing this rule to the attention of all I hope it will not be necessary to point at any one member for misuse of our directory. We greatly enjoy the privilege we have that CMCS members allow their names and contact information to be published in a directory. I beg of the offending party(s) to stop their solicitation of our members for their own gain. OUR NEW BURGEES are here and they beautiful! The cost will be increasing slightly to $30.00 ea. however, when everyone sees them they will understand why. The newest members of CMCS will be receiving theirs first, then the Burgees will be available through the Ships Store. Many thanks to the task force team for tackling this. We are changing with the times and the tide rolls on... Again, look forward to seeing everyone out on the water Fair Winds & Calm Seas, Commodore Bev

2 Cruising Report We had perfect weather for Danger Island this year. 16 boats participated. They were, in no particular order, Avanti, Chase The Clouds, Kestrel l, Tanglefoot, 4 Seasons, Jolly Mon, Judy Judy, Alborada, Win, Perfect Dispersion, Lazy Susan, Bare Feet, Rex ll, Mental Floss, Gopher Baroque, and American Dream. Friday night we grilled on the beach with a dish to share. Saturday morning was the Black Tie Vice Commodore of Cruising Croquet Tournament. 24 club members participated. Ron Maddix 1st place went to Ron Maddix, Mel Rudd took 2nd place, and Charles Tomlins, took 3rd place. Fabulous prizes were awarded. The Chowder Cook Off was held Saturday evening. Best tasting chowder went to Linda Eggers, 2nd place to Terry Alexander and 3rd place to Carolyn Preston. Best Presentation was won by Jean Blessing, 2nd place to Terry Alexander, and 3rd place to Carolyn Preston. Once again, great prizes were awarded. Many Chowders were made and all were great. Thanks to all who participated. A Memorial moment was held to remember Club Members who had recently departed as well as family members that had passed. All agreed that the weekend was a success and we are looking forward to next year's Cruise. Our next Cruise is to the Dry Tortugas on June 1st led by Ron and Shirley Maddix. Bob and Bev duff will lead the Fisherman's Village Cruise on June 12th. Reservations are Required. See you on the water. Ron Maddix, Rear Commodore of Cruising 2

3 Pelican Bay Cruise Tom and Linda Koenig, Cruise Leaders s/v Wind Swept Friday, May 3, turned out to be a beautiful day after many rainy days ahead of it and a forecast of more to come. We weren't sure what we were going into for this Pelican Bay cruise weekend. Wind Swept arrived at Pelican Bay about 2:30 pm, preceded by Alborada, and greeted by Tanglefoot and Kestrel II, already anchored. The rest of the day and Saturday saw the arrival of Trust Me, Gopher Baroque, Chase the Clouds, Sea Isle, Zydeco, Four Seasons, Barefeet and Avanti, for a total of 12 boats. Friday, at 5:00 everyone met on "dog beach" for cocktails and snacks and to enjoy good conversation and a luscious evening. At 2ish on Saturday, the Kite Flying Contest and Bean Bag Showdown got off to a very windy start. With gusts of 31+ mph, Bev "Rainbow" Duff, Linda "Lady Bug" Hissam, Kathy "Polly Want a Cracker" Light, Kim "Spiderman" Brown, Waite "Cars Piston Cup" Alexander, and Ben "Transformer" Preston had a challenge keeping their kites in the air. The winner of "highest flying and longest in flight kite" was Kathy "PWAC" Light. The winner of the Bean Bag Showdown was Waite "foot over the line most of the time" Alexander. What a hot shot! Good Job, Everyone!!! Saturday's activities were concluded with a "dinghy daisy chain" cocktail and appetizer party in Manatee Hole (the most protected spot of the day). The "daisy chain" looked more like a ring of bologne, with 11 dinghies participating. After approximately 1-1/2 hours of totally unhealthy snacks and libations, the group split to do whatever it is they do in the evening. On Sunday, most boats hauled anchor and headed home or to other ports with the exception of Tanglefoot, Avanti and Wind Swept, who stayed to enjoy another windy day at anchor. We think a good time was had by all. Thanks for joining us, Tom and Linda Koenig AHOY MATES ~ Plotting our course for June 2013 Cruise Fishermen s Village in Punta Gorda on beautiful Charlotte Harbor Is our destination. 6 Racing News It s May and things are starting to slow down as the humidity and temperatures rise. Although CMCS had only one racing event, there was the Tampa-Ft. Myers Race, the The Messmer Cup, the Bone Island Regatta and the Key West to Naples Race to keep racers occupied. There were no CMCS racers in the Tampa-Ft. Myers race this year. There were four CMCS racers in the Messmer Cup, five CMCS racers in the Bone Island Regatta (Naples to Key West), and three CMCS racers in the Key West to Naples race. The first annual Jerry Pim Memorial Estebel Night Race was held on Saturday, May 11 (newly re-named in honor of Jerry Pim, one of the original CMCS race organizers and handicappers-although not a new event). Eric Milbrandt was the Race Officer and Gary Rear Commodore of Racing Blessing was the mark boat. Prior to the race, a memorial for Jerry was held offshore, Steve Roake where his ashes were spread. The following morning, the Pim s hosted a brunch at the home of Brock and Barbara Johnson. Ten boats participated in the 15-mile race out to Knapp s Point and back. The race began in 15 kt. Winds and lumpy seas from the southwest. As the evening progressed, the winds diminished to about eight kts. All boats finished within four hours of the start. In the Spinnaker Division, (2 boats) Joel Andrews Macushla was first, followed by Forrest Banks Midnite Rider. In the Non-Spinnaker Division, (2 boats) Steve Romaine s Air Supply was first, followed by Steve Roake s Meritorious. In the True Cruising Division, (3 boats) Diane Fowler s Windy City was first, followed by John Finnegan s Miss Cathleen and Stan Dale s Mark 1:17. In the Multi-Hull Division, (3 boats) Ned Christensen s Passion III was first, followed by Art Monahan s Kraken and Erik Soronen s TRIUMPH. The new Jerry Pim Memorial Estebel Night Race trophy was unveiled at the May general membership meeting. Joel Andrews Macushla was the winner of this award (first overall-corrected time) for Four CMCS members competed in the Messmer Cup sponsored by the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. In the Non-Spinnaker Division, Steve Romaine s Air Supply was first; In the Multi-Hull Division, Erik Soronen s TRI- UMPH was second and Ned Christensen s Passion III was third; and in the True Cruising Division, Diane Fowler s Windy City was third. Congratulations to all! Carol Pim presents Joel Andrews Macushla the first place trophy forwinning the Jerry Pim Memorial Estebel Night race on May 11. 6

In the Spinnaker Division (four boats) Forrest Banks Midnite Rider was second, in the Non-Spinnaker Division, (two boats) Steve Romaine s Air Supply was second, in the True Cruising Division, (four boats) John Finnegan s Miss Cathleen was second and Diane Fowler s Windy City was third. Three CMCS members competed in the Key West to Naples Race (13 boats), sponsored by the Naples Yacht Club, on Sunday, May 19. In the Non-Spinnaker Division (3 boats), Steve Romaine s Air Supply was third. In the True Cruising Division (5 boats), Diane Fowler s Windy City was second and John Finnegan s Miss Cathleen was third. Congratulations to all! help. Diane Fowler is still looking for some help with the Ladies Race on Saturday, June 8. Please contact Diane if you can After the Ladies Race in June, there will be no more racing until the Kayusa Cup in September. Bev and Bob Duff s Chase The Clouds will be the Race Committee for the start of the Kayusa Cup in September. The Kayusa Cup finishes at South Seas Plantation on Captiva Island, coincidentally the site of this year s CMCS South Seas Cruise! We still need a volunteer to take finish times for this race. This is the perfect job for someone to sit under the beach umbrella at South Seas and take finish times! Thanks to all who volunteered so far. Of course, we always need lots of volunteers for the Summerset Regatta in October. Start thinking now about which events you ll be volunteering for! The future of our racing program hinges on volunteer participation. Ladies Day Regatta SAVE THE DATE: June 8, 2013 at 11 am Saturday Ladies Day drag Queen race! 8 Blast From The Past These pictures were sent to Glen Vetter by A. Kaestner showing some CMCS activities a few years back. The BIG Question: How good is your memory?: 8 Who are the people? Where were the pictures taken? What was the occasion? When?

9 Web Guru s Message Paula, Annie and I are off on an extended cruise up the US East Coast. Currently we are at Isle of Hope, just outside Savannah, GA. There are a number of other Society members out cruising as well. And, if any of you would like to share a BLOG (electronic log) you may be writing with other CMCS members, please pass on a link to me at gwvetter@gmail.com. I will then add your BLOG's address to our website, under "About Us" where other members may see what's happening. Freestyle has been keeping a BLOG of our Summer Cruise which you are welcome to peruse. It would be great to see the journeys of other members here too ( cmcs-sail.org/about -us ). -- CMCS Web Guru Glen Is it time to renew your Boat US Membership?
