1 The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida Next Full Moon: February 14 P.O. Box , Cape Coral, Fl February 2014 Commodore s Message Commodore Diane Fowler WE are off to a BANG UP start! The folks in our leadership roles have SO many good ideas! This should be the BEST year ever! Many thanks to Bev Duff, 2013 Commodore, for lining up so many quality folks! In January, we had a spectacular Change of Watch (COW) dinner at La Venezia Banquet Hall in Cape Coral. Heard mostly positive feedback, with the exception of the bar tender only stocking 1 measley bottle of white wine! Everyone danced, laughed, and enjoyed each other s company. By the time this is printed, we will have had a skipper s/ crew meeting, the chili race, and the chili cookoff contest! Also, sad to report a long time member, Jim Wiley, passed away in January. He will be missed! Looking ahead into February, we have a Winterset Cruise Jan. 31 Feb. 2; Edison Festival Cruise/ Oysterfest on Feb ; Membership appreciation night on the 18 th (be ready for some surprises!); and the Edison Gulf Regatta race on the 22 nd. Board member Mike Smith has some health issues that will prevent him from completing his term. Lucky for us, Deedee Cheek volunteered to take over this post. She brings a wealth of experience and ideas! For those of you who attended the Christmas party, we had Al Eastman, past Commodore 2008, leading us in The 12 Days of Christmas. I twisted his arm to rejoin CMCS and take over the position of Liberty Ashore! He is a fabulous cook, fun guy, and we are pleased to have Al back. Welcome aboard! Did you ever receive an invitation to a special PARTY that you looked forward to?? Our YEARBOOK is full of SPECIAL INVITATIONS! If you have not picked up your YEARBOOK (formerly called the calendar ), they will be available at the next few events. So, come on out & pick up your copy. Mark events in your Daytimer, electronic calendar, or however you keep track of your life. There are so many GREAT events, you will want to schedule your other fun around these events! Our motto this year is: Share the adventure, share the work load, and share our boats with others! Do you realize HOW FORTUNATE you are to OWN a sailboat? Only a very small % of Americans qualify for this blessing! I just counted 83 sailboats in our club! 6 Catalina 30 s, 3 Catalina 32 s! Many sailboats are able to fit a single/ or couple for a daysail or weekend CRUISE. Hey folks, this is a SAILING club cast off those lines and SAIL with us! Whether racing or cruising is your thing ; there are plenty of opportunities to meet new people and make a new memory. If you are considering RACING your boat, please visit: and apply for your PHRF certificate. We are working hard to have everyone visit our CMCS website frequently and will maintain LISTS of folks who want to crew, daysail, or weekend overnight. Positions for both boat owners and non owners will be noted. Hope to see you on the water SOON, 2014 CMCS Officers Commodore: Diane Fowler Vice Commodore: Allen Fiske Vice Commodore Summerset: Steve Romaine Rear Commodore Cruising: John Reekie Rear Commodore Racing: Stan Dale Fleet Yeoman Diane Pfaff Fleet Purser Bill Cook Past Commodore Bev Duff Chowder Chatter Editor Steve Roake

2 CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2014 Page 2 Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report Rear Commodore-Cruising John Reekie When we joined CMCS in 2004 we wanted to learn all the great cruising areas in Southwest Florida. By participating in the cruises we did just that. But, more important we have made so many friends with the same interests: sailing, cruising, 5 o'clock cocktails, partying on the beach or at the pool or just relaxing on our boat. We look forward to cruising again this year and making many new CMCS friends. activities, which most everyone when over to enjoy. I didn t see anyone with glitter in their hair or painted faces, so I gather it was an observational recon rather than total participation. The first cruise of the year was actually the New Year s cruise at Fisherman's Village. Cruise leaders Carolyn Wilson & Dan Green have a report in this issue. Winterset cruise will have come & gone by press time. Hopefully cruise leaders Bev & Bob Duff will give us the details at the February meeting. FEBRUARY: EDISON PARADE OF LIGHTS (EPOL) NOTE CHANGE FROM THE CALENDAR - This cruise starts on Friday February 14. Rose Ann Hoffman & Paul Steinman will be our cruise leaders and have information in this issue including a cut-out/mail-in coupon to order oysters. No payments will be accepted at the Oyster Fest. For those coming by boat, Legacy Harbor Marina is located downtown Ft Myers. Heading East on the river past marker #49 turn at the white marina flag on a piling, leave the flag to starboard and proceed 130 degrees to the breakwater. Call the marina on channel 16. The harbormaster will have you switch to another channel to get your slip assignment. John & Susan Reekie s/v Lazy Susan New Year s Cruise New Year s Eve at Fisherman s Village was a grand success. We had 13 boats in the marina and I counted 43 people (including the drive ins) in attendance at the snack and pot luck dinner eating events. The marina provided a band, so everyone drifted in and out of that area throughout the night. The Mall also had free entertainment and On the way to Fisherman s Village the assorted boats, plus Tanglefoot (who did not attend New Year s Eve), visited Pelican Harbor and some to Burt s Bar. Everyone assembled by New Year s Eve at the marina and began leaving on Jan 1. Barefeet left about 1 a.m. because he would rather leave then than get up at 5 to get out on the tide. The rest of us staggered departures the next morning depending on drafts and reassembled at Pelican for the night. Some departed on Jan 2 and the rest stayed to brave the big wind and cold of the front that whipped in. Attending boats were Bridget O Toole, Kestrel II, Zydeco, Samphire, Gopher Baroque, Barefeet, Slo Dance, Ariel, Lazy Susan, Tyrolia, Sea Puppy, Chase the Clouds, and Grateful. Carolyn Wilson M/S Bridget O Toole

In 2014 CMCS will host five (5) Buoy race days; three (3) Long- Distance race days; two (2) Ladies Day races and two (2) days of racing for the Summerset. That translates into twelve (12) events that require a dedicated Committee boat & Mark boat, along with crew. To be a volunteer boat or crew, please me at sdale@fdda.com. Only a few races remain to be filled. As we prepare this article we are only days away from the Chili Cook-off Regatta. I ll be reporting on the results at the February regular meeting. I m looking forward to an exciting year of CMCS racing. As a member of CMCS, racers and cruisers alike, let me encourage each of you to step out of your routine this year. And.if you haven t paid your 2014 Membership Dues uh Please welcome our newest members: Bob Oliver joined us a Crew Member. Many of you have already met Bob as I brought him to our December meeting/christmas Party, and he joined us at the COW. He had such a great time and enjoyed meeting everyone so he decided to join. Bob was in the Navy and traveled all over the world, yet he has never learned to sail (and he s looking forward to that!) He says his most scary boating adventure was on Cumberland Lake (KY) in a deep fog which made them miss a turn, ended up going into another cove and came very close to blowing into another houseboat. Interesting story ask him about it. Norman and Sally Brandon joined as Full Members. They are from Knoxville, TN and have cruised and raced for over 30 years. Norman has taught most U.S. Power Squadron classes including sailing and navigation. They have lived in North Ft. Myers for 2 years, and just sailed their 30 Catalina from Watts Bar Lake (TN) to North Ft. Myers in Norman is a retired Engineer/Technical Manager. She was Rear Commodore of Racing in 2005, Commodore in 2006, and now is repeating Commodore in Other hobbies include golfing, travel, and fitness. Steve currently owns a Jeanneau 35 - Air Supply. Vice Commodore Allen Fiske Vice Commodore Allen is from a small town in Massachusetts and spent most of his summers on Cape Cod and Rhode Island beaches and waters. His dad built him a nine-foot sailing pram when he was ten years old and he has been involved in water sports all his life, swimming, water-skiing, surfing, scuba diving and sailing. He lived in Connecticut for many years, owned three sailboats during that time and did much sailing on Long Island Sound, visiting such ports as Port Jefferson, Sag Harbor, Montauk, Mystic, New London, Old Saybrook, Block Island and Newport. He had a dream of moving to a warm climate, living on a sailboat and eventually taking a year or two to go cruising. In 1982 he was in a car wreck and became a paraplegic. He figured that was the end of his dream. Ironically, another sailor from Newport, Rhode Island, became a paraplegic at about the same time and started Shake-A-Leg, making sailing an accessible sport. Coincidentally, in 1990, Allen moved to South Florida and Shake-A-Leg opened a branch in Miami. Allen was hired as Outreach Director for Shake-A-Leg Miami in 1994 and purchased a thirty-five foot sailboat Minimum Balance, which he charters and has lived aboard ever since. He helped Shake-A-Leg become the nation s largest disabled sailing program at Miami s Community Sailing Center. Today, he is living aboard his boat in Ft Myers Beach and very involved with racing/cruising activities in the Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society, playing Wheelchair Tennis and helping to develop a Disabled Sailing Program here in SW Florida.

8 CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2014 Page 8 Meet Your New Officers (continued) Rear Commodore-Cruising John Reekie My first boat was a 1957 Lyman wooden powerboat that I bought at age 15. The first sailboat I owned was a 22' Pennant sloop that was moored in Deadhorse Bay, New York and sailed in New York Harbor. After getting married and moving to the South Shore of Long Island we had various powerboats. Our sons John & Scott thought the sailboat was so slow and took too long to get to the beaches for surfing. In 1982 I bought a 23' Glen Coe, Iona sailboat with a 2'4" draft, perfect for the South Shore and the Florida West coast. We moved to Seminole, Florida in July I returned to Long Island and sailed/motored the Iona to Florida via the Intracoastal Waterway. I crossed Lake Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee, then north to Boca Ciega Bay. The trip took 43 days. We have lived in Cape Coral since 1999 and purchased a ' Sabre in 2003, joined CMCS in 2004 and have been cruising with the club since. In December, 2012 we bought a 31' Island Packet Lazy Susan that we say is our last boat, but you never know!
