1 The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida Next Full Moon: Sept. 27 Oct. 27 P.O. Box , Cape Coral, Fl October 2015 Commodore s Message Commodore Allen Fiske Greetings. Welcome back all of you who are fortunate enough to be able to travel to cooler parts of the world during the Southwest Florida summer months. You are just in time for the muchanticipated 50 th Summerset Regatta. It is staring us right in the face. October 9-11 will bring upwards of 70 boats from up and down the coast for three days of racing and shenanigans, all benefiting Youth Sailing. It will be the culmination of the work of a dedicated committee, headed up by Steve Romaine, our Vice Commodore of Summerset. Over the last seven years or so, Steve has built a tremendous network of sponsors. He has been able to get the whole community involved as a result of an awesome effort. It is easy to see how this got started fifty years ago. Up North, where most of us come from, by the time October hits, the boats are hauled for the winter, the bathing suits are put away, and the jackets come out. Here in Southwest Florida it means that we finally get a break from the Summer heat, rain and thunderstorms. The temperatures go from the lower 90's to the lower 80's and the humidity level diminishes. We get to brace ourselves for about six months of gorgeous Sailing Weather. It is a rough life, but someone has to live it. When you head out into the Gulf, whether it be from under the Sanibel Causeway from Cape Coral or around Bowditch Point in Ft Myers Beach, the most obvious way to head is Southeast toward Naples. That's what they did fifty years ago and whenever you have more than one boat going in the same direction, you end up with a race. Over the years, it has evolved from longer distance races to Naples and Marco Island to the present set of buoy races with a longer Cruisers Race thrown in for good measure. We truly hope that all participants, whether they come form Naples, Marco Island, Punta Gorda, Englewood, Tampa or wherever, enjoy our hospitality and return home with a feeling that their trip to Ft Myers Beach was a truly great investment of their time. See you there! Allen Fiske, 2015 Commodore S/V Minimum Balance P.S. Just wanted to advise everyone that at our last Board Meeting It was proposed and voted on that we would not have a Commodore's Dinner. We decided to combine it with the Christmas Party. We have not finalized all the details yet. More to follow next month! 2 CMCS Chowder Chatter October, 2015 Page 2 Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report Rear Commodore-Cruising Kim Brown. TGIO Thank god it is October. Besides summerset, we will also get relief from a hot wet summer. Our friends who spent the summer up north should be filtering back and we can start anchoring out under the stars. This is not to say we haven t been having a good timejust that the Marina bills have been adding up. Over Labor Day the fleet went up scale to Naples. Fancy digs, great rate, nice pool, margaritas with locally grown organic limes. A full report elsewhere. That was quickly followed by the Kayusa Cup to South Seas. The weather was hot, the drinks cold, and the triathletes made us all look bad (except John Churchill who actually competed). Not sure if the presence of all the athletically inclined created resolve or resignation among the aging cruisers. I know which way I am leaning.. Thanks to George and Pixie for keeping track of it all. Upcoming: Summerset- Oct Cruisers count! Sign up and participate. Even if you can t/won t race we do know how to celebrate. We can party at the skippers meeting (Steve hands out goodies to the Cruisers that night). Our vast experience will play well at the cocktail party Saturday. It is 5 o clock somewhere. AND we can do sit down inside food if we have to. Not one cruiser got kicked out of the restaurants in Naples. Chicken or Fish- how hard can it be. Trust Me!!! will be looking for a ball in the mooring field or just do it by land if they are full. Remember it is also Pirate weekend on the Beach so get you aaaargh! on. Halloween- Oct 31-Nov 1. It was lightly attended last year and I got no one to raise their hand this year to lead it. There seems to be a general lack of interest. Therefore we are just going to scratch this. As a consolation I would note that Trust Me!!! intends to head up river to the Franklin Locks- Senior Pass in hand to check out the revamped docks. No official cruise, no games, no schedule but if you happen to be there (by boat or land yacht), we ll share the grill.. Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report Rum and Reading- November York Island off St James is the destination for this relaxed weekend cruise. Remember if the wind is wrong for anchoring off York Island then it will be right for Sanibel bight. Just look for the sailboats. Steve Roake has put together a description of these anchorages elsewhere for newbies. Trust Me!!! may be running late but we will get there Friday for the sipping rum contest. I have a bottle of last year s winner and it will to take on all contenders. This is about quality not quantity. Smoooooth matters. After educating ourselves Friday evening, we will head in Saturday to Bob Macomber s book bash at Woody s up the Monroe Canal. Just follow the stream of dinghies. There is a new book this year. Please support literacy. Fair winds, Rear Commodore Cruising Kim Brown s/v TrustMe!!! South Seas Cruise Recap The South Seas cruise was lots of fun. The first night we had a little history about the USS Constitution and snacks and some rum, along with lots of laughs. Followed by a light show with sound effects from Mother Nature as we all slept. We even found a leak in the boat with the downpour. The next day brought nice weather and everyone seemed to love the pool. Kids from the Triathlon entertained everyone with their energy and games for quite a while. The racers came along as cruisers watched from the pool. I believe there were 6 boats. Another afternoon get together with the added racers made for more fun & laughter. The resort was just fabulous with the pools, beaches and CMCS members. We left Sunday morning to head home but Ambiance, Air Supply, Vixen, Air Boss and Lionheart were having such a good time they stayed another night! George & Pixie Noyes

3 CMCS Chowder Chatter October, 2015 Page 3 Rear Commodore of Racing s Report Rear Commodore Racing John Churchill Upcoming Racing Events September saw the resumption of our racing activities with an exciting Kayusa Cup Race from Ft Myers Beach to Redfish Pass. A big thanks to Eric Milbrandt and crew for getting us all off to a great start and to Bill and Mary Misenheimer aboard Barefeet greeting us at the finish line. The weather was a little unsettled with a reefed mains and a gusty thunderstorm looming before the start, but then the rainbow came out, winds moderated and it was a full sail day. After a short upwind jog to "SC", the fleet turned the corner for an all day reach. The spinnaker class was able to set chutes once Knapp's Point was cleared. All the boats that started were able to complete the race. Our scorer, Tony Solgard, was able to get results out on race day evening. The Multihulls had two boats with Eric Soronen's TRIUMPH coming in ahead of Art Monahan's Kraken. Spinnaker class had 2 boats, with Brock Johnson's Vixen coming out of semi-retirement to beat up poor NURDLE, who took her usual last in class. Non spinnaker had only one competitor, Miss Cathleen with John Finnegan at the helm who sailed a great race, at one point nearly catching up to one of the laggards in spin class. True Cruising also had a single racer, Bentley with Tom Horner aboard who was last to finish but corrected to best time overall. Our next race event is a big one, the 50th Annual Summerset Regatta. Registration/entry forms have already been sent out and are also available online. Just another reminder for everyone to get their PHRF certificates up to date as they expired in July. 5 CMCS Chowder Chatter October, 2015 Page 5 Where The Wind Blows Recap The boats filtered south to Naples on Friday. The first judgement call get to the pool early or start later and get a little sea breeze. The ambitious set gennys to help the iron gennys. Most took the breeze at face value and didn t bother. Docking held less drama than usual as most arrived while the current was fairly slack. Eight boats made it for happy hour plus poolside: TrustMe!!!, Lionheart, Lazy Susan, Chase the Clouds, I Sheet You Knot II, Ambiance, Miller Time and Wind Dancer. AC issues then moved to the top of the worry list. Wind Dancer was actually forced to sleep au natural until a control board issue was sorted out on Saturday. As usual, the assembled offered sage advice that, while heartfelt, was totally wrong. The deep philosophical question was- if you find a fish in your AC filter, do you want it to be dead or alive? After gorging on appetizers, the crowd dispersed to dine as they wished. On Saturday, we started with a pilgrimage to the Cove Inn Coffee Shoppe for breakfast. Others followed over the course of the weekend. Many marveled that a place could actually be Cash Only in this day in age and some were caught short. It all worked out and no one had to do dishes. Those that couldn t get away on Friday finally caught up Barefeet, Jazzy and ProReNata. The crowd was testing the bathing capacity of the pool by 2P and Mr. Machine Roake was summoned. Where The Wind Blows Recap We took over the chickee bar and began producing frozen concoctions according to Mel Rudd s secret recipe. The problem was the drinks made your skin wrinkle up so after at least several you had to get out of the pool. The grill was fired up and a tasty potluck took place in the AC clubhouse. It was civilized. All were able to retire to air conditioned comfort. Sunday was a repeat wander Naples; hit the pool; breakout the machine ; eat the snackies you didn t eat Friday and Saturday and retire to your boat. Note that until Monday there was not a single drop of serious rain that befell this charmed group. The trip home was different. It taught one of those valuable life lessons- sometimes the rain comes after the rainbow. TrustMe!!! got off early with Barefeet. A beautiful rainbow greeted us as we exited Gordon Pass. The rain then moved onshore and we got soaked. Nothing ugly just very real. Having done this run on Labor day many times from Summersets past, I actually thought the rain worked better than 95, cloudless, windless. The real benefit came when going up river. Here it was a holiday weekend and there was nary a Hurricane deck boat to be seen. Thanks to the Naples Boat Club, Steve the Machine Roake and all our spouses (just because). Fair winds, Rear Commodore Cruising Kim Brown s/v TrustMe!!! Thanksgiving Cruise November 25 - November 29 Cruise Leaders: Glen & Paula Vetter This is a traditional cruise event for CMCS. For the last few years it has headed North to Pelican Bay with boats starting to arrive Wednesday evening in time for happy hour on the host boat. Arrangements will be made for a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at Cabbage Key (can t cook it as good or at the price $ offered). More information to come, like prices and how to make a reservation. There s plenty to do here with exploring in your dingy, access to Cayo Costa beach, and of course our tradition of happy hours on a boat, beach, and/or manatee hole. We also plan to push a little more technology stuff on you by sending out an blast with a very simple electronic RSVP. Details will be coming in a future blast and in the November Chowder Chatter. For right now, just mark this cruise on your calendar, and watch for more details. Glen & Paula Vetter s/v Freestyle
