The Chowder Chatter Newsletter of the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society A Premiere Sailing Club of Southwest Florida Next Full Moon January 16 January 2014 C o m m o d o r e ' s M e s s a g e WELCOME TO 2014 and I hope it is a very happy and prosperous year for everyone! It is a good feeling to know that during this past year we have grown CMCS by over 10%, welcoming many new members to our ranks. You will see even more CMCS Burgees on the water ways of SW Florida this coming year! The 2013 Officers and Directors have steered a true course for our great organization. When asked, Diane Fowler, stepped forward as 1 st Vice Commodore the last few months. Our Vice Commodore of Summerset, Steve Romaine, has set new targets for our charitable giving to Youth Sailing Programs in SW Florida, and extended our Summerset Regatta. The Rear Commodores of Cruising and Racing, Ron Maddix & Steve Roake respectively, have managed ongoing programs to get Commodore Bev Duff our members, and others, on the water whether it is relaxing sipping a beverage in the cockpit or challenging each other on the race course. Yeoman, Mary Misenheimer, has kept this Commodore and the O&D right on task with her talents of note keeping and timely agendas. Our financial status has been well in the black thanks to the many years of service by Purser, Tim Stier. No one person can run a tight ship without the efforts of the Officers and Directors and our directors have been dedicated. I salute Russ Green, Art Gross, Paul Steinman, Stephanie Webb, Stephen Carpenter, Roger Pfeiffenberger, Mike Smith and Erick Soronen. Thank all of you so much!!! It has been an honor to serve with all of you this term. The ship of CMCS enjoys the talents of so many members. Our Committees of the Fleet have volunteered hours and talents. Many hands make easier work for all! Thanks to Jennifer Barch, Liberty Ashore; Bill Misenheimer, Programs; Rose Ann Hoffman and Sue Stier, Ladies Bridge Club; Fleet Recruiter, Jean Andrews; Diane Fowler, Sailmate; Storekeepers, Steve & Kitty Carpenter; Don Lawson, Editor of the Chowder Chatter; Sunshine over the Yardarm, Sigrid Diedricksen; Website Guru, Glen Vetter; Public Relations, Steve Romaine; Legislative Liaison, Stephanie Webb; Youth Scholarship Program, Charles Milbrandt; and Wendy Cook, Yearbook Editor. There are so many members who volunteered during the year and my thanks to each for stepping forward to lend your time and talents. Last and not least the members of CMCS are really the best!!! It has been a pleasure to serve you once again in To borrow from many of my predecessors ~ without the membership, CMCS would not exist! With CMCS being an up and growing organization it is time for this Commodore to say adieu, adios, aloha, arrivederci, auf Wiedersehen, au revoir, bon voyage, ciao, sayonara, shalom.. and turn the helm over to a very competent successor. My goals have been met and then some. Hoping to see all of you at the Change of Watch event January 10 th! Always a fun evening and deadline is drawing née so make your reservation before years end. Fair Winds & Calm Seas ~ and I ll be seeing you on the water, Bev Duff, 2013 Commodore

Thanksgiving Cruise Report Thanksgiving Cruise (a.k.a. They Come and They Go) Linda Raymond/ Michael Cain on s.v. "Zydeco" A few hearty boats braved the strong cold front to anchor at Pelican Bay for the Thanksgiving cruise. Zydeco, Freestyle and Merry Morgan arrived a day early to take advantage of the knot south winds. It was a great sail up Pine Island Sound - we had it to ourselves! Air boss and Bridgette O toole arrived on Wednesday in the knot NW winds. Everyone hunkered down for the blow reading novels, doing boat chores, fishing, knitting and who knows what else! There was a small happy hour on Zydeco. Grateful, new members Jeff Sashnick and San Priest, showed up for their first cruise and joined us for Thanksgiving dinner at Cabbage Key. Cabbage Key dinner was delightful as always - great food and great service. Many thanks to Freestyle for being the ferry boat for those of us with small dinghies. There were 12 at our table for dinner. Trust Me showed up with relatives and had a nearby table, then joined us in Pelican Bay. Hot butter rums on Zydeco after dinner - can't do that often in SW Florida! Walks on the beach on Friday. More boats came in - some boats left. New arrivals were Gopher Baroque with Jason and family as crew, Tanglefoot, a Mainship trawler with old members who plan to rejoin- Roger and Patty Safford with guests Harold and Val Fahz that were members in the 90s. Happy hour on dog beach. Winds settled down. Wade's son Mike on Island Time joined us and Ariel with Boy Scouts sneaked in just in time for happy hour. More boats left. Samphire, Tyrolia and Blue Skies came in. After another long beach walk on Sat we had a dinghy raft up in Manatee Hole. Bridgette O toole, Air boss, Aeriel, Zydeco, and Samphire braved the cloudy weather, got wet from a fresh water rinse, and finished the party on Bridgette O toole. There were approximately a dozen frolicking manatees- with one very curious youngster checking out our dinghies. Talk to those who attended if you want to know more about manatee poop. Zydeco sailed home on the outside flying her spinnaker. All in all, we had a great time, but it was a cruise for the hearty! CMCS Helps Caring Center with Food and Toys for the Holiday Season At the CMCS December Holiday Party our members donated 82lbs of food, more than 60 toys and $ in cash and checks. When I delivered the donations Wednesday morning at 9:30am (the center opens at 9:00am) there was already a line out the door. The Caring Center was very grateful for all that we do for the less fortunate of our community. Thank you so much to all our generous members, John & Susan 3

Racing News This is my last monthly column as your racing chairman. I ve really enjoyed serving in this position over the past three years and I d like to thank all of you who have put up with me, encouraged and supported me, and participated in our racing program. Again, thanks! Stan Dale, the new Rear Commodore-Racing, has some very good ideas for the program in I hope you will support and encourage him as you ve done me. Stan is planning to have a skippers meeting before the first race in January to introduce the new program and distribute materials. Watch for an announcement later in the month with the time, date and place. ALL racers are encouraged to attend this meeting. The Commodore s Cup Regatta wrapped up the 2013 racing program. Thirteen boats participated in what turned out to be a one-race regatta. Our Commodore came out to preside over the pre-start, wearing her fulldress uniform! Thanks, Commodore Bev! 2013 racing went out with a whimper as the wind quit around noon, never to be seen again that day. In the Multi-Hull Division, Erik Soronen s TRIUMPH was first followed by Art Rear Commodore of Racing Monahan s Kraken. In the Spinnaker Division, Forrest Banks Midnite Rider was first, followed by Eric Milbrandt s Full Tilt. In the Non-Spinnaker Division, Roger Horton s Wicked Wicked Ways was first, followed by Steve Roake Steve Romaine s Air Supply and Gary Blessing s After You. In the True Cruising Division, Ian Davis Wind Star was first, followed by Arnie Pfalz Laura Li and Diane Fowler s Windy City. After the Commodore s Cup racing, the Commodore hosted a great party at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. Those who attended had a great time. A great meal was provided by our Commodore Bev. The Summerset Regatta was the last distance race of the season in October. This was a four-race series and a boat must have competed in three of the four events to qualify for a series award. Trophies(*) are awarded based on tthe average number of starters. In the Multihull Division, Art Monahan s Kraken was first*, Ned Christensen s Passion III was second*, and Erik Soronen s TRIUMPH was third. In the Spinnaker Division, Joel Andrews Macushla was first* and Forrest Banks Midnite Rider was second. In the Non-Spinnaker Division, Brock Johnson s Vixen was first*, Steve Romaine s Air Supply was second* and Tom Horner s Bentley was third. In the True Cruising Division, John Finnegan s Miss Cathleen was first*. These awards will be presented at the Change of Watch Dinner in January. The Commodore s Cup Regatta concluded the 2013 Buoy Series. The series consisted of 13 races in six regattas. To qualify for a series award, a boat had to participate in 80 percent of the scored races. In the Multi-hull Division there were no qualifiers. In the Spinnaker Division, Forrest Bank s Midnite Rider was first. In the Non-Spinnaker Division, Steve Romaine s Air Supply was first and Gary Blessing s After You was second. In the True Cruising Division, Bill Misenheimer s Barefeet was first. These awards will be presented at the Change of Watch Dinner in January. Congratulations to all who came out and raced this series on a regular basis. I d also like to thank all who volunteered this year. Stan Dale s Mark 1:17, Eric Milbrandt s Full Tilt, Bill Misenheimer s Barefeet, and Bob Duff s Chase The Clouds all served as a committee boat. Joe Periard helped out on the committee boat for many of the races along with Rusty Batchelor. Joe also provided his boat as the committee boat when mine wasn t working (which was most of the time!). Jeff Butzer was the Race Officer for Summerset and graciously provided his boat as the signals boat. A special thanks to Brock Johnson who keeps track of the Caloosahatchee Boat of the Year scoring. Brock and Barbara also graciously hosted a couple of after-race parties at their home this year. Of course, we always need lots of volunteers for future events. Stan would like to use more volunteers for race committee. Start thinking now about which events you ll be volunteering for! The future of our racing program hinges on volunteer participation. A reminder to all who race with CMCS that Division pennants are required to be flown from your backstay when racing. This goes for CMCS members and non-members alike. You can make your own or purchase them from the club. The Pennants will be available at the general membership meetings and through the Rear Commodore Racing. The pennants will also be available at the January skippers meeting. Again, thanks for all of your support and encouragement over the years. CMCS has a great bunch of racers! 6

Which Overboard Recovery Side Should You Choose? Here s another sailing tip from our friend Captain John at skippertips.com Not many sailing safety issues chill the blood like the thought of falling overboard. But, even more dangerous could be the recovery itself. Why is that? You may have read and practiced different overboard approaches. But there s still a lot of controversy about the final approach to bring the person alongside your sailboat. Read on to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each. Then, you decide. It s your call, Skipper. Read one book or another, or one magazine article or another, and authors tend to disagree on recovery side. Should you place your boat upwind of the victim or downwind? In the end, I believe there will be no fixed in stone answer. We all must decide on this based on the conditions at hand. Realize that this will be the most dangerous part of any overboard recovery. Do You Know Your Boat s Bare-Hull Behavior? Take your boat out on a windy day with wavelets wherever you sail. Drop all sail and allow the boat to assume her normal attitude in the current conditions. Most all vessels, from the smallest sailboat to the largest super tanker, will lie beam to the wind and waves or almost beam to the wind when bare hull (no sails or propulsion). Note her drift rate, or how fast she drifts crab-like in a sideways direction. Now, imagine that you combine that drift with seas. Even the smallest sea will create a rolling motion on a vessel. The amount of roll will depend on under-body configuration (keel, amount and location of ballast, vessel displacement and freeboard) and, in particular with some power vessels with flying bridges or tuna towers weight aloft. Some boats snap roll in a quick right-left motion whereas other heavy displacement boats with longer keels and heavy ballast will wallow from side to side. Use this exercise to get an idea of your boat s behavior after you round up alongside a person in the water. Once alongside, you will drop sails right away to stay next to the victim and prevent the boat from sailing off on her own while you conduct recovery. As soon as you do, your boat will assume a position close to that in your experiment. In a seaway, she may tend to rise and fall and roll from side to side. Each overboard circumstance will be different. I believe there are no easy answers, and that you must make the call based on the environmental conditions in your location. Approach Side Pros and Cons Use your knowledge of your vessel s behavior in a seaway to give you the edge in a real overboard situation in the future. Look over the table below; add your thoughts to it. Discuss it with your sailing partner or crew. Show your sailing partner or crew how your boat lies ahull (under bare poles) and how to heaveto on your sailboat. Remember that they might be the ones doing the recovery if you fall over the side! Windward Approach 8

Pros: y Cons: Final Thoughts Man overboard recovery will always be the most dangerous part of the MOB evolution. Just another reason to practice stay aboard techniques at all costs. There are specific body motions that will help you stay aboard.the basics are grab, look and go. Do not even think of movement until you have a firm grip on something that will not give way. Look for tripping hazards on deck before you proceed. Then and only then, move your feet. Basic? You bet.but I believe you would find in most every MOB incident, one of these was forgotten in the moment. We all have forgotten to hold on when changing out a sail. A gust hits, the boat heels, and we slide. Or we may have forgotten to brace ourselves first before we perform a simple task. One way or the other, overboard incidents will continue to happen from time to time. Each skipper must decide on the final approach to the person in the water based on the on scene conditions at his or her location. No weather forecast can predict local conditions. I believe the best preparation will be an intimate knowledge of your own specific boat. Know her bare hull and heave-to characteristics in different wind and sea states. Then you will have the confidence to make the best decision possible in an overboard emergency at sea.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~keep your sailing crew or partner aboard at all costs to avoid the difficulty of man-overboard recovery at sea. Know your boat s capabilities ahead of time to equip yourself with the confidence to handle this sea-going emergency just in case the unexpected comes your way! 9
