1 The Chowder Chatter Newsletter of the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society A Premiere Sailing Club of Southwest Florida Next Full Moon: August 28 August 2007 COMMODORE Bev Duff commodore@cmcs-sail.org I have a quote in my office ~ If someone asks: "When is my ship going to come in? Remind them that steam has replaced wind. So it is that we are steaming towards our grandest regatta of the year ~ Summerset Regatta! This is truly a labor of love for many in CMCS. Summerset is a tradition, it s a habit for Labor Day weekend, and it s an opportunity to get everyone out on the water. My family has participated in this event for 30+ years. Yes, there is life AFTER Summerset but for now we ALL need to focus on our part for this year s event. There is something for everyone, be you racer or cruiser, boater or land lover. Summerset offers an opportunity to participate. We need assistance with reservations and greeting on site, sponsors of all kinds with incentives available at all levels, and of course the sailors to get their boats registered for racing and/or cruising. Call Forest Banks or Elise Missell and let them know how you want to help. Change is inevitable and we are morphing once more. Visiting the CMCS WEB site as a member and visitor, you will see changes. The Chowder Chatter and other information will now be available to the casual visitor who is just Checking us out. We welcome visitors which is why the Board voted to make more of our site available to non-members. However, be assured that personal information is still member only and secure. The WEB has become a recruiting tool of the future and we welcome the chance to get the word out of the largest and best sailing Club of SW Florida. It may be the Dog Days of Summer but we are still out and about. Looking ahead (while we are preparing our boats for Summerset) there is the T ween Waters Cruise and then the Ice Cream Social at the membership meeting on the 21 st of August. It has been grand sailing under the new Sanibel Bridge unencumbered by the bascule bridge. The Celebration for the new Sanibel Bridge is planned for September 8 th and we are planning a salute to the bridge in full regalia, and a race for the Bridge on that date. More information to come in the September Chowder Chatter and on the WEB site. Fair Winds and Calm Seas, Bev Welcome website visitors. This is the first edition of the Chowder Chatter to be made available online to nonmembers. We hope you enjoy it. Feel free to visit us any time at one of our monthly membership meetings or socials. I recently received some correspondence from our club s 1st (and 2nd) Commodore, Gene Whatley. He sent the following two bits of history. In case anyone wondered about the name of the club, a sailor is reported in the 1971 records to have burst out with it at an early organizational meeting in the middle of a heated discussion as to what name to use. Everyone thought it was a great idea, probably because they were tired of arguing. The Summerset regatta predates the club as it was first sailed in 1966 making the 1971 race the 6th annual. - the Editor

3 RACE REPORT: CMCS Firecracker Night/Evening race on 21 July was an interesting event for those brave souls who challenged the elements. Actually, it was a nice evening with a near miss by a large dark squall. Seven boats turned out for what was planned to be a thirteen mile triangle course. It was shortened to seven and half miles for safety concerns. The fleet started towards the Sea Buoy in five knots of north wind. Immediately it increased to and backed northwest. The fleet scooted around the Sea Buoy and thence a fast reach east to the south end of Ft. Myers Beach. It must have made for a breath taking vista for those on shore. Or not. It was a three mile beat back to the finish. The finish was narrowly missed by afore mentioned weather but a light rained cooled off overheated racers. It was cool and pleasant with an odd light casting from the sunset. Sand Dollar had the usual top finish in Non-Spinnaker. Dave and Cindy are always fast regardless of conditions. Well Done. Tom Horner and Bentley had a good sail and rounded the course for a close second in this class. In True Cruising, Ms. D. Fowler had Windy City just slicing to windward and captured the top spot with Chase the Clouds second. High Heels, I like that name, finished third with Roger Horton steering. First time racer Old Glory, a Lagoon 35 Cat, gamely hung on and finished. It's a good start. In Spinnaker class Macushla dominated the class. Flawless sail handling and tactics proved too much for the rest of the Spinnaker boats. This won them the Stanley Cup sized Trophy. The Signals boat was most ably manned and womaned by Greg Davis and Betsy Bouchant. A big thanks to them on this soggy night. The next event will be Summerset. This gives everyone time to fix, repair, prepare, and practice for this premier CMCS race. Postscript, John Kremski, Sunfish Guru will be holding races in which racers may tune their skills and have some fun. 4 REAR COMMODORE CRUISING Jerry Canning July got off to a great start with the Franklin Locks cruise headed by Russell Vance. Five CMCS boats participated: Shadowfax, Ix, Island Time the trawler, Kestrell II and Pathfinder. Six CMCS boat crews showed up in their RV s: Rum Daze, Fidelis, Miller Time, Sea Gull, Sunday Silence & Bridget O Toole. Finally, six other CMCS boat crews made day trip appearances: Air Supply, Wings, Drambuoy, Ave Del Mar, Zydeco and Charmant. In addition, there were a number of relatives of CMCS members participating. Russell describes the events in his separate column. Our next cruise is the T ween Waters Cruise scheduled for August I will be leading that cruise. 16 Boats have signed up for dock space so this is looking like it will be another great cruise. Following the T ween Waters comes our most important club event of the year the 42 nd Summerset Regatta. This event is our key focus on giving back to the sailing community as well as a great and fun event. We are still working on plans for the cruise. Tentatively, those of us who can leave early are looking at leaving Friday and spending the night in Champney Bay. We will move to our docks in Naples on Saturday. Cruisers have historically been a big part of enjoying the Summerset experience. Those wishing to cruise along are warmly welcomed and are encouraged to join in by sending in the entry form with appropriate cruising box checked. Summerset offers a great opportunity for cruising and racing sailors to get together for a great weekend on the water. Cruisers have a several other options. You can just leave on Saturday morning and sail down to your dock, or you can leave early and join other cruisers in Champney Bay. The scheduled formal events include: Saturday, September 1: Post race cocktail party starts at 6:30 PM at the Bay Front Inn on 5th, Naples. There will be a cash bar with free beer and hors d oeuvres on the pool deck. Name badges will be distributed at the Cocktail Party. Sunday, September 2: Dinner and awards ceremony starts at 6:30 PM at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. Cocktails will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 PM and dinner will be served at 7:30 PM. The awards ceremony will start around 8:30 PM. Sandy and I will be there and we hope to see many of our other cruisers having fun and supporting this worthwhile event. We don t often get a chance to join the racing and cruising sides of the club into one great event. See you on the water! Gerald Canning CMCS Rear Commodore of Cruising 4

5 INDEPENDENCE DAY CRUISE TO FRANKLIN LOCKS June 30 th July 4 th, 2007 The cruise to the Franklin Locks was, without a doubt, the third most exciting cruise of the year. How about manatees traveling with us inside the lock? How about the small alligators in Hickey Creek looking for their parents? How about a giant lightning strike directly overhead? How about the picture of four of our members at the locks on the front page of the News-Press (Local Section) on July 3 rd? Add those to the fun, fishing, dinghy rides, super BBQ s, and you have an unforgettable cruise. This year was no exception to the norm, as CMCS again ruled the Locks. There were eight slips with power and water, at a cost of $24.00 per night. We had five cruisers along with three vacant first-come-first-served slips. In the past we ve always occupied all eight. Saturday was a great day, socializing and partying as our gang arrived. The cocktail party was followed by the 5:55 PM lighting of the great giant BBQ. The assortment was outstanding, with tons of leftovers. Following the usual after-dinner drink, most headed towards their respective lodgings, and others toward the showers (thank you!). Sunday morning around 9:00 AM the first five dinghies headed for Hickey Creek. This group was headed by the campers, who normally have trouble sleeping in the morning. Their trip was not exciting. At 10:21 AM sharp, the second group of five dinghies, led by the cruisers, was a screaming success. There were many bison in the water, a camel, several breeds of horses, weird looking dogs, sunning turtles and most interesting and photographical were the baby alligators looking for their parents (we were not going to help them). This trip lasted two hours, and three hours for some of us who headed up to the Rialto Harbor Marina. Sunday afternoon presented a thunderstorm with major lightening strikes, one of which had everyone seeking out their hiding place. The storm cancelled the CMCS Trivial Pursuit Championship. The second BBQ was a great success with lots of salads and desserts. We had 40 members and guests. The day ended with a spectacular sunset and wonderful music from Carolyn Wilson s bagpipes. Monday we headed for the 12:00 Noon opening of the Lock, along with our manatee friends who were heading down the River. It was at this time that the News-Press took a picture of our CMCS dinghies with the fishermen in the foreground. Cool! Thanks to everyone for helping out with this cruise. Let me know if you are interested in participating next year, as this trip is a tough ticket. A special thanks to Air Supply and Irish Miss for hosting the Fourth of July festivities at Legacy Harbor Marina. The best, Russell Vance, Cruise Leader 5
