The Chowder Chatter Newsletter of the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society A Premiere Sailing Club of Southwest Florida Next Full Moon October 18 October 2013 C o m m o d o r e ' s M e s s a g e AHOY TO MEMBERS OF CMCS and welcome to the SUMMERSET REGATTA edition of Chowder Chatter. We had a great commencement meeting to preview the events of Summerset 2014 at the September general membership meeting. We were treated to snacks from the Edison Sailing Center and some of the youngsters spoke to the group about their experiences with the program that we helped sponsor. We had nuts to cake to kick off the racing season for CMCS. Speaking of kicking off, it is also that time of year to look for our new Officers and Directors. The Nominations Committee (I like to call this Board Development Committee ) have many positions to fill for We have been very fortunate to have many members who have devoted many years and their talents to CMCS, and they are ready to move on... Within this edition of Chowder Chatter are forms for each of you to express your wishes to serve. Rodger Commodore Bev Duff Pfeiffenberger, a Director and newer member of CMCS, has agreed to helm this endeavor. He has been more than willing to step up and use his talents to benefit CMCS. It is my hope that there are many others who wish to serve also! CMCS is the premier sailing organization in SW Florida and it s exciting to be a part of that. Please volunteer your time and talents to continue the Tradition as this ship doesn t run on autopilot ~ lots of hands are needed to steer it! On that note, thank your Board members for holding the Annual Dues to $ for 2014! CMCS is a great value! The dues notices are in this issue as well as available online through our WEB Site. The Deadline for dues renewals is November 31 st as the 2014 Calendar goes to press on the 1 st of December. The Calendar Committee has a great deal of work to do and again, a newer member, Wendy Cook has volunteered to steer that committee. There are many items that must be completed before press time and the most important is having as many members as possible included in the 2014 Annual Calendar. Don t be left out! Each membership is asked to complete the Renewal form and send with your payment. That way we can make sure our records are current at least as of press date. Thank you to so many who brought food for the Cape Coral Caring Center. The grocery cart is an ongoing project for CMCS to help our community. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Calendar changes were noted in last month s Commodore Message so hope everyone updated their 2013 calendars accordingly. Don t want anyone to miss out on an event! On that note, folks who want to help with the Fort Myers Boat Show will have sign -up list at the October meeting. So at the October membership meeting each member needs to bring their check book for dues and a date and time for help out at the Boat Show (FREE Admission to helpers!) That s enough to fill my allotted space. Just love the last quarter of each year as there is so much to do! everyone on the water! Bev Duff, Commodore Hope to see

Cruising Report Twelve boats participated in the Where the Wind Blows Cruise to Naples. Mel and Glenda once again did a great job. More on this Cruise in this Chatter. 16 Boats went to South Seas. Dan and Debbie Merriman once again lead The Cruise. Their report is also in this month's Chatter. Good job guys! And let's not forget our Summerset Regatta is also a cruise with Tim and Deedee Cheek as cruise leaders. There are plenty of activities for cruisers. Sail down and anchor out in the Fort Myers Beach Mooring Field and come ashore at the Matanzas Inn's dinghy dock under the bridge. Shore-side facilities are available at the Inn. You don't need to bring a boat! Become a "Land Cruiser" and come out to join the fun. Vice Commodore of Cruising Ron Maddix Fort Myers Beach has plenty of fun activities. Summerset is also Pirates Weekend. Visit for more information on the Pirate Festival. Entering the Regatta as a cruiser has many advantages. Each entry receives one complimentary tee shirt, access to the Skippers Meeting with pizza and complimentary beer and where Cruisers door prizes will be awarded to those lucky Cruiser Entrants, Complimentary Saturday evening Cocktail Party tickets for your entire "crew" are also included. This year's new Sundays Cruisers Coastal Race will be fun filled too. In any event you must send in an entry to be included in Summerset Events. The following Marinas offer special Summerset Regatta rates. Make your reservations early as these marinas fill up fast! Moss Marine at Pink Shell Resort Slips at Salty Sam's Marina at For complete information on Fort Myers Beach Mooring Field go to: NID=109 or call Matanzas Inn as Matanzas Inn asks that you call when you reach the bridge and they will assign you a mooring ball that will accommodate the size of your bot. You will need a dinghy; there is no transportation to and from any of the events from the mooring field or any of the marinas. A registration form has to be completed if you plan on staying on one of the mooring balls. Please call or Deedee Cheek and she can forward you the form (so you can have it completed before you register at Matanzas Inn) and a schematic of the two mooring fields. The Going North Cruise is really going to go. Saturday, October 19th we will anchor at Useppa or Pelican Bay depending on the tides and or number of boats participating. Sunday morning we will sail to The Crow's Nest Marina in Venice. The Crow's Nest is one of our favorite restaurants. Monday, it's off to Longboat Key and 2 days at anchor next to Moores Crab Shack. Beer Can Beach or free trolley rides the length of Anna Marie Island are great activities available. Wednesday we make a short trip South to Marina Jacks in Sarasota. The Marina has always been great to CMCS. There are a limited number of mooring balls available with full shower and laundry facilities at no additional charge for those wanting to anchor out. Thursday, we sail back to Pelican Bay/Useppa Island and join up with The Halloween Cruise on Friday October 25th. All members planning to make this cruise need to contact me because reservations need to be made at The Crow's Nest and Marina Jacks. The Halloween Cruise is October 25th thru 28th at Picnic Island, AKA Danger island.. Charles and Judy Tomlins are our Cruise leaders. They request that everyone bring a little firewood. (a prize for who brings the most!) Friday evening is happy hour on the beach. Saturday, at 10:00 games start. Break for lunch and more games at 2:00pm. Grill your own with a dish to share Sat. evening. Later on there will be a bonfire and costume contest. Fabulous prizes will be awarded during the Cruise. After an 8:00am Island clean up we will pull anchor and move to St. James City about 10:00am. A dinghy ride to the Raggety Ass Saloon followed by a dinghy trip in the area will conclude the Cruise activities. This Cruise destination is a short distance and easy for everyone to attend. See you on the water. Ron Maddix, Rear Commodore of Cruising 2

Meet Us In Margaritaville Cruise Report 6 Boats, AirBoss, Barefeet, Gopher Baroque, Lazy Susan, Trust Me!!!, and Wings, motored to South Seas Island Resort on Friday the 13 th in flat seas. Everyone arrived by 1330 and most enjoyed the pool that afternoon. The cockpit of AirBoss was full for cocktails and then most went to RC Otters for dinner and to listen to a dock neighbor, Frank, play guitar. Saturday, race day, brought more light winds and the race was shortened from 18 to 10 miles. The cruisers watched from the beach and pool as the racers arrived. Vixen arrived first followed by, in no particular order, AirSupply, After You, Passion III, Nurdle, Miss Cathleen, Minimum Balance, Windstar, Loki, and Essence. Painkillers were served on the docks as the racers arrived after a long, slow, and hot race. Most were begging for more as the pain was intense! Cocktail hour was moved from Passion III to the dock in search of shade and relief from the heat. More than 50 racers and cruisers enjoyed a bounty of snacks. Some still had room for more and enjoyed the many fine restaurants nearby. Sunday found all but AirBoss and AirSupply leaving for home. The only docking incident from the weekend came that morning as Passion III had engine problems. Nurdle was kind enough to give Ned a tow out of the confines of the marina where maneuvering was a challenge on one engine. A few boats that left later got caught in a sudden thunderstorm near Marker 101. Back at the Marina we made a run from the pool back to our boats to rescue flags from the strong winds. Our small group watched the America s Cup on AirBoss during cocktail hour. The two remaining boats departed on Monday and we had a very enjoyable sail home arriving at the dock shortly before the afternoon storms began. Thanks for the great turnout this year. South Seas is always a terrific destination during the hot summer weather. Dan and Debbie Merriman S/V AirBoss Volunteers Needed For Boat Show Where The Wind Blows Cruise Photos Ahoy members - it is almost time to think about signing up for the booth at the boat show. As most of you know we get a comp. booth for CMCS at the November 14th. - 17th. show. Each year the event takes place at the Harborside Event Center and City Yacht Basin in downtown Ft. Myers. CMCS member volunteers do two hour shifts at our booth and get free admission for their efforts. You will have an opportunity to sign up at the October 15th. membership meeting. Mel and Glenda prep the margarita machine while Bill and Mary, Suzanne and Dennis, Kathleen and Russell, Waite and Ron enjoy the frozen concoction. See Page 4-5 for full report. Be advised that our calendar shows a conflict with the Bob Macomber Bookfest; not to worry the Bookfest has been changed to the next weekend November 23rd. So be thinking about the boat show Nov th. -- Bill Misenheimer - Program Director 3

Election Procedures for CMCS Officers and Directors According to our CMCS Bylaws the way we elect officers and directors is in compliance with state law and more importantly provides more opportunities for the membership to become involved with the governance of their organization. Under the current bylaws, the 1st Vice Commodore has the responsibility to submit this article in August for the September Chowder Chatter each year explaining how the process works. There are two ways a candidate can be nominated for a Flag Officer or Director position. The first way is that the Nominating Committee can nominate them and the second way is that any member in good standing can nominate them. Historically, the Nominating Committee was composed of Board Members and Flag Officers. However, since 2010 current Flag Officers are no longer members of the nominating committee. The Nominating Committee consists of a past commodore, two current directors and two members from the general membership. If you are interested in serving on the nominating committee, you can fill in a Nomination form and to the Commodore or bring to the September General Membership meeting. The Commodore will also solicit interest from the floor at the September general membership meeting for members interested in serving on the nominating committee. The Board, at the September Board meeting will appoint the nominating committee who will then select the two general members. At the September and October General meeting(s) of CMCS, the Commodore will review the process of selecting the Officers and Directors for the coming year. The Commodore will also encourage that written nominations for Flag Officer and Director positions are submitted to the Nominating Committee no later than November 1. Nomination forms are available on the CMCS Web site, and published in the September and October Chowder Chatter. You can nominate yourself, in fact you will notice that you have to sign the form and another member in good standing has to sign the form. We do not want someone nominated who does not want to serve. The Nominating Committee will meet prior to the November Board Meeting to prepare a slate of Officers and Directors, and will report that slate as a recommendation of the Nominating Committee at the November Board Meeting. No action may be taken by the Board other than to accept or reject the recommendation of the Nominating Committee before the December General Meeting of the Society. In the event that the Nominating Committee does not select a nominated candidate provided from the general membership for its own slate of Officers and Directors, that nominated candidate shall still be included and placed on the ballot. In other words, all properly nominated candidates will appear on the ballot. All nominations shall then be submitted in November to be published before the December Meeting of the Society. Another element to our voting process is the Credential s Committee that will actually run the election. Two members selected from the general membership, not any Flag Officer or Director, will constitute this committee. The Commodore will request volunteers at the November membership meeting. Requests for absentee ballots would be made to the Credentials Committee. The Fleet Purser and Fleet Yeoman will act as staff to the Credentials Committee. Voting is by membership, not by member. In most cases that means that each family has one vote. We anticipate that you will pick up your ballot with your nametag at the December meeting of the society. There will be provision for write in nominations. If you request an Absentee Ballot and then decide to attend the December meeting of the society, you will not get a second ballot. This process and procedure is a work in progress and may need some modifications. Our goal is to help you get more involved in the workings of your club. (last update 9-13) 6

Racing News It s already the end of September and things are really heating up in the racing department! It seems like we just finished the Kayusa Cup and The Summerset Regatta is upon us! The Kayusa Cup was held on Saturday, September 14. As is often the case this time of year, there is either little wind or lots of wind! This year again saw little wind. The Race Committee of Mike Kayusa and Bob Duff did a good job of getting the fleet started in really light conditions. Mike and Bob, working with the finish RC, Bill Misenheimer, came up with a shortened course that still took about four hours to cover. There were 17 starters in four divisions and only four non-finishers pretty good for a drifter! In the Spinnaker Division Joel Andrews Macushla was first, beating Forrest Banks Midnite Rider by five seconds corrected time! (So how important are those starts and tacks?). In the Non-Spinnaker Division, Brock Johnson s Vixen was first, followed by Steve Romaine s Air Supply and Paul Rear Commodore of Racing Steve Roake McDill s Essence. In the True Cruising Division, John Finnegan s Miss Cathleen was first, followed by Arnie Pfalz Laura Li and Morgan O Shaughnessy s Pearl. In the Multi-Hull Division, Art Monahan s Kraken was first, followed by Erik Soronen s TRIUMPH and Ned Christensen s Passion III. Of the 17 participants, there were seven guest boats from other clubs. Thanks for helping to support the CMCS racing program! West Florida PHRF certificates all expired on June 30. If you haven t already done so, please renew yours now. It s easy to do on their website and you can pay via PayPal or credit card. If you need help renewing or completing a new application, please feel free to contact Steve Roake, your local WFPHRF handicapper. We re already working on the 2014 calendar. The 2014 race schedule should be available soon! We ve finalized the Caloosahatchee Boat of the Year Notice of Series. This was sent to all racers and friends on the current list. If you haven t received a copy, please contact Steve Roake. The next event is the Summerset Regatta on October 12 and 13. I m certain everyone has been deluged with Summerset materials by now. There s more elsewhere in the newsletter and on our website: The Summerset Regatta will be the last distance race of the season. There will be two more buoy series regattas Festival of the Islands on Saturday, November 2 and the Commodore s Cup on Saturday. December 7. Both regattas are Caloosahatchee Boat of the Year events. The Edison Sailing Center s annual River Romp is October Contact Stephanie Webb if you d like to help out. The Ft. Myers Boat Show is November CMCS will again have a booth. Let s get some volunteers to promote our racing program this year! Thanks to all who volunteered so far. Of course, we always need lots of volunteers for future events. Start thinking now about which events you ll be volunteering for! The future of our racing program hinges on volunteer participation. This is Steve Roake s last year as the CMCS Rear Commodore-Racing. (Really - it is!) The nominating committee is looking for someone to do this job next year beginning in January. If you have an interest and would like to tag along for some of the races on the committee boat for experience, contact Steve Roake. 8

W F PH RF ~ CALOOS AHATCH EE REGI O N NOTICE OF BOAT OF THE YEAR SERIES Schedule of Events: Sept. 14 Kayusa Cup CMCS (South Seas Plantation) Oct Summerset Regatta CMCS Nov 2 Festival of the Islands Regatta CMCS Dec 7 Commodore s Cup Regatta CMCS Feb 22 Edison Gulf Regatta CMCS March 8-9 Conquistador s Cup PGSC March Gulf Coast Sailing Club Charity Regatta GCSC March 29 Shrimp Festival Regatta CMCS Organizing Authority: West Florida PHRF, Inc. Sponsoring Organizations: CMCS : Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society; PGSC: Punta Gorda Sailing Club; pgscweb.com GCSC: Gulf Coast Sailing Club; Requirements: A boat must have a valid WFPHRF certificate to be scored. Boats must compete in three regattas to qualify. There are no other fees or requirements to qualify. Scoring: The total scores used for one boat will be the highest scores in a number of races equal to 50% of the races held during the season. For example if there are a total of 24 races held, the number picked for scoring will be the contender s top 12. Odd number of races will be narrowed down to the next even number. Points are awarded 5 points plus each boat beaten. Summerset Coastal and the Kayusa Cup will receive a 30% bonus. If a Regatta has more races than allotted in the schedule above, no more than 3 races per race day (per day in a multi-day regatta) will be counted. In the event of more than 3 races, the best three finishes will be counted. If an organizer races the fleets in any division on different courses or at more than 15 minutes apart on the same course, it may be necessary to score boats only against the boats in their starting class. If so done, the classes will be adjusted so that the winner of the smaller class receives the same number of points as the winner of the larger class. The last place boat in each class receives 5 points. Points in the smaller class will be interpolated accordingly. Every effort will be made to score all of the boats in a BOTY division against all other boats in that division. If however, in the opinion of the BOTY Committee, the course sailed or the time of the starts is sufficiently different, the scores will be based on each competitor s position within its own class. The decisions of the BOTY Committee are final and are not grounds for requesting redress. The number of trophies for each division will be based on the number of boats qualifying for the series. A minimum of three boats must qualify in a division for trophies to be awarded in that division. Number of Qualifiers Trophies CLASSIFICATION: The ISAF Sailor Classification Code (ISAF Regulation 22) will apply. Full details of this code can be found at For information please visit us at: Rules, Conditions & Awards: Sailing in any BOTY event is the responsibility of the participating skipper or owner. He will abide by the rules and conditions of and be scored by the race organizer. Awards will be as per the event. There will be four fleets scored for BOTY, Multi-Hull, Spinnaker, Non- Spinnaker, and True Cruising. Sport Boats will be scored as Spinnaker. Caloosahatchee BOTY Committee: The committee consists of the area PHRF board member (currently Mike Kayusa), the CMCS Rear Commodore for Racing (currently Steve Roake), the CMCS Vice Commodore of Summerset (currently Steve Romaine), and an at large member from CMCS (currently Brock Johnson). The purpose of the committee is only to establish the schedule, maintain the scoring, and encourage compliance with PHRF guidelines. All BOTY scoring decisions will be made by the Caloosahatchee BOTY Committee and will be final. 9
